Arthur Charles Betts Copied from "Centennial History of NSW 1888" by Barbara Adams ARTHUR CHARLES BETTS, J.P., District Surveyor, is the second son of the late Josiah Allan Betts,J.P.,of Windsor, N.S.W., and Martha Betts, the youngest daughter of the late Rev. Samuel Marsden,senior chaplain of the colony. He was born in 1843 at Riverstone and educated at Kings School, Parramatta. At the age of fifteen he joined a Government survey party, and proceeded to Bourke to assist in the laying out of that town. In 1865 he passed his examination, and took charge of a party in the Western Division until 1870, when he proceeded to Lake George, Bungendore, to superintend the measurement of a base line and assist in the triangulation of this colony. At this he remained until 1875, when he received the appointment of District Surveyor for Monaro. Mr Betts received a commission of the peace in 1887 on being raised to the position of Chairman of the Cooma Land Board, and he fills the duel positions with honour and sterling capacity.
