Obituary

While being brought by car from Boloko yesterday for medical treatment at Cooma, Joseph William Byrne collapsed near Dalgety. He was attended by the Bush Nurse at Dalgety, but was found to be beyond Human aid. We understand that he had been suffering heart trouble for some time past, and that he had been under medical treatment for it. In the circumstances the District Coroner, Mr. H.H. Solomon dispensed with an inquest. The funeral was to take place this afternoon to Moonbah Cemetery.

The Cooma Express Friday June 29th 1929
Joseph William Byrne
As briefly recorded in last issue, the death took place on Sunday last 24th June, of Joseph William Byrne, a highly respected resident of Jindabyne district for many years past.

Deceased had been working for Mr. R. Rose of Boloco, as boundary rider, and in the course of his work scratched his knee on a barbed wire fence, poisoning following. He was being bought to Cooma for medical attention in connection with the inflammation, but collapsed and died at Dalgety. He had been suffering from heart trouble, so no doubt the pain of the poisoned wound proved too much for the heart.

Deceased was the youngest son of the lat Joseph Michael and Winifred Byrne, of Hill Crest Moonbah, and was born in West Jindabyne 41 years and 7 months ago. His wife who survives him was the fourth daughter of Mr.& Mrs. John McGregor of Jindabyne. He also leaves two sons Ossie (nine years) and Frank 3 years, one brother John of Canberra and one sister Agnes of Boloco, and numerous relatives.

The funeral took place on Monday 25th Inst., to the Moonbah Cemetery, the body being interred in the R.C. Section in the presence of a large assemblage of friends and relatives. Rev. Father O’Connor officiated, and in the course of an impressive service, referred to the sterling qualities of the deceased. Messrs Les McEvoy, Des Sheilds, Pat Pendergast and J.D. White were pall bearers, and Mr. J.F. Allen had charge of funeral arrangements.

Wreaths were noted from: Wife children and sister; His Brother; Mr. & Mrs. Angus Reid and family; Mrs. Mary Reid, Dalgety; Loving cousins Murray St. Cooma. J.Y. Pendergast and family; Mr. &. Mrs. Mat Power and family; all at Lynwood; All at Boloco; Jack and Mary; Ray and Pauline Byrne; Zilhah and Harry Hemmings; Aunt Helen: Mr. &. Mrs. C Hemmimgs; Mr. & Mrs. Herbert; G. Daly: Aunt Caroline and family. Louie and Jim McGregor:

A correspondent in referring to the circumstances of Mr. Byrne’s death says that the greatest credit is due to various Dalgety residents, for their assistance and courtesy to the bereaved family, and especially to Mr. T.H. Woodhouse, Postmaster, who left nothing undone that he could do to assist in getting messages through.
