SNOWY MOUNTAINS MUSEUM

From: Barry and Margaret

Sent: Sunday, 2 June 2013 4:09 PM

Subject: The Snowy Mountains Museum .rtf

Hi Ian

Would you please place this on the Monaro Pioneers home page for us please

Thanks Tracey & Margaret

The Snowy Mountains Museum at Adaminaby has been purpose built to show the history of the planning & subsequent building of the Snowy Mountains Scheme. The museum covers the period from 1947 to current times.

However it has been recognised that the period prior to this is in danger of being forgotten with the concentration these days being focussed on the Scheme.

With this in mind a section has been allocated to show the history prior to 1947.

At present the display is quite small, what is required are old photos of the Snowy Mountains districts, i.e. Berridale Adaminaby Jindabyne & surrounding districts.  Ideally looking for old buildings, old farming techniques, family records or diary’s anything that that would give an insight into what life was like.

If you have anything of that nature that you think may be of interest please contact Tracey ( asst. Curator)

Phone: 02 64541601   Email: gleneden147@bigpond.com

Ps the museum is also very short on volunteers if you can spare an hour or two occasionally please contact Tracey.

WEH / HOFMEIER REUNION

A reunion to mark 130 years of the Weh / Hofmeier family settling in Woolgoolga is to be held on Saturday 31st August 2013 at Woolgoolga Bowling Club.

For all descendants of – Anna Maria Weh, her youngest daughter Anna Martha married John Adam Hofmeier.

Other siblings were John Weh, Louisa Weh. August Weh married Elizabeth Carlyon and resided in Warialda district.

For All enquiries Contact Darrell & Pat Davis 0402 022 008 or email jaycoranger@hotmail.com

Part of the Weh family settled on the north coast of NSW. But John and Louisa we know very little about other then they resided in Australia according to their mothers obituary and were still alive at time of their mothers death in 1886 according to her death certificate. We thought it was a possibility there could be somebody who might be checking your web site and have info or know of the family.

Either these 2 died and they had another William and Isabella in Australia or it is the wrong Margaret as mother.

Hi Kelly,

I believe I have found the immigration details for Alexander and Margaret, they arrived on the "David Scott" October 30, 1834 in Sydney but no mention of any children.  These two children could have been christened twice in different denominations.

Regards,  Ian

On second thoughts I think the most likely scenario is these two children died before the parents left England.   I found the records you refer to on the Familysearch website and there are later birth dates for the subsequent children with the same name.

BREEN

From: Michael / Maureen Jennings
Sent: Tuesday, 2 July 2013 9:01 PM
Subject: Michael Joseph BREEN

G'day

1.    In your Monaro Pioneers database you have the following death entry

Michael Joseph BREEN  ID I442

Died 1924 Newcastle

2.    This death date is possibly incorrect and is more likely to be 15 September 1930 Randwick (South Kensington). I base this on the following death notice extracted from the Sydney Morning Herald newspaper of 16 September 1930 in the Archives (TROVE) of the National Library of Australia.

Death notice in SMH 16 September 1930: BREEN -September 15 1930, at his residence, 42 Lorrodalo Road. South Kensington, Michael, beloved husband of Emma, and loving father of Dan, Jim. Hilda, Mick, Ted, Eileen, Bert and Leo, after a long illness At rest.

3.    In other words, in the death notice, the family name of Breen and given names (of husband, wife and the 6 children albeit with nick/pet names) all match the family data under your Michael Joseph Breen ID I442 database entry.

4.    I suspect that this Michael Joseph Breen (died 1930) is in fact the son of Daniel Breen and Mary Byrnes, born 1 August 1861 in Moruya (registered Broulee) with the possibility of a tie to my Joseph McKee - Mary Ann Breen (Kiss) ancestors/family of Nimmitabel.  I base this on the first of the following two entries in the NSW BDM historical index for 1930

12196/1930

BREEN

MICHAEL J

DANIEL

MARY

RANDWICK

17852/1930

BREEN

MICHAEL J

JAMES

NORA

NORTH SYDNEY

5.    Because of the use of same given names within families and across generations, there may be a number of Michael J/Joseph Breen/s from the Monaro district.  I will apply to the NSWBDM for the 1930 death record and also the 1890 marriage record to Emma (Jess).  I will let you know further about my speculations when I receive these records.

6.    In the meantime, I would appreciate you advising me whether the BREEN family information in your database is based solely on lookups of the NSWBDM Historical Index or whether there has been some input from outside contributors to the database. In this connection, and if my speculations prove out, I would like to test my findings with those contributors.

Cheers,  Michael Jennings

Hi Michael,

I believe you are correct in your assumptions and I will amend our records accordingly.  There is no contact information for that family so I am unable comment on how the original information was obtained.  I can add a copy of the certificates you have ordered to our database if you wish to send them to me.

Do you have any further information on Daniel Breen and Mary Byrnes?

Regards,  Ian

Hope this is okay.

Kind regards, Pat

PS  I’m still trying to sort out our differences with James Charles Ingram.

Hi Patricia,

Does your Family Tree software produce any other descendant report formats?  The reason I ask is the Outline Descendant report whilst good, does not detail the parents for spouses which is particularly helpful in connecting the dots in our database.

Regards,  Ian

Okay, let me work on it.  Meanwhile, I think I’ve sorted out James Charles Ingram.  The James Charles who served in WW2 was definitely born 22 Oct 1911 to Charles Ingram and Ada Isabella Scott.  His enlistment papers have been digitised and can be seen online and it notes his father as NOK living in Bunyip, Bonang.  It also shows his NOK is changed to his wife Olive Joyce, and that they married 22 Oct 1943 in Victoria.  There is a photo in the records for anyone wanting one.

Yahoo.  My apologies, as I had him with incorrect parents.  You have him with incorrect wife. I am now very sure his wife is Olive Joyce Peisley.

In reply to you email, John EDWIN Ingram was my uncle and he was married to Joyce Magdalen Ward. His birth date is correct and his parents were John David Ingram and Lavinia Edna Elvira Targett. ( my grandparents). John was only married once and is buried in the C of E section of the Nimmitabel cemetery. His wife Joyce is buried beside her first husband in the Catholic section of the Nimmitabel cemetery. John is buried beside his parents. He died on 16 May 1986 Hope this helps with your query

Thank you Rae, that information was very helpful and joined a few more dots.  Just one question though, the burial records we have show John Edwin's death as May 23, 1987, which date is correct?

Hi Patricia,

I suggest you discuss the authenticity of the photo with the contributor Rae Blyton as I am not in a position to comment. What I can say is whilst there is a marriage of a John Andrew Ingram to Thelma Alice Joiner in Delegate in 1956, John Edwin Ingram who married Joyce Magdalen Ward in Burwood in 1959 is buried in the Nimmitabel Cemetery (CofE) along with his wife and his parents John David Alfred Ingram (Jack) and Lavinia Edna Elvira Targett.   The dod shown for John Edwin gives a birth date consistent with the birth date we show, September 15, 1927.

Description: Sorry to keep on about his date of death, but the James Ingram who died Sydney 25 May 1955 is the son of James Charles and Edith Kezia Ingram (NSW death regn.) He was born in Sydney.  There is a James Ingram born Sydney who enlisted WW2.  From 1930, this James was a postal official in Sydney, his last address being in Coogee. He married Olive Jean Mary Brummell.  In 1980 she was living in Adaminaby.

James Charles Ingram enlisted in Victoria and it was this James who married Olive Joyce Peisley.  As Peisley is also common Monaro name, and as my James Charles' brother also married a Peisley, I feel certain that VX33412 James is the son of John Charles and Annie Heathfield Elliott.

James' brother, Raymond Cyril Ingram, also enlisted.

Pat

Hi Patricia,

Thanks for the input, I have removed the death details from this James Charles Ingram.

However, I still cannot agree with your conclusion that he married Olive Joyce Peisley unfortunately.   The NSW BDM Index has the birth of "our other" James Charles Ingram born in 1911 (parents Charles Ingram and Ada Isabella Scott) and his Military record from the WW2 nominal roll shows his DOB as October 22, 1911 Bombala, and NOK Olive.

We have Raymond Cyril Ingram to whom you refer in our database (parents John Charles Ingram and Annie Heathfield Elliott) born October 31, 1911 in Bombala.

Now if James Charles (Id 87878) was the one shown on the nominal roll his birth date is 9 days before his older brother, which I believe is extremely difficult medically if not impossible and as you can see the reference numbers are not consecutive indicating they were not twins and you can also see the parents are definitely different.

Now, of course, the Nominal roll could be wrong but only the birth, marriage and/or death certificates can provide conclusive proof either way.

In my examination of the electoral rolls I can only find 2 James Charles Ingram's….

The Electoral rolls for 1937 show the 2 James Charles Ingram  ….

and the one listed in Lang District, NSW I have discounted as the one who died in 1955 as you mentioned.  The other living in Gippsland district is the one of interest.

cid:image001.png@01CE75BF.6E83AE50

The 1936 electoral roll shows "our" James Charles and his brother Roy Scott Ingram (parents Charles Ingram and Ada Isabella Scott) living in Buchan along with his brother-in-law Charles Wilbram Ingram and his brother Arthur Thomas (parents Henry Ingram and Mary Ann Harriet Marriott)  ….

cid:image002.png@01CE75C0.9BE7E680

as does 1937 roll … but now James Charles' sister Isabel May who married Charles Wilbram is also listed.

cid:image003.png@01CE75C0.DBB054A0

The 1937 Roll shows John Charles Ingram and Annie Heathfield Elliott living at "Broad View" Bombala with a number of their children but no James Charles.

cid:image004.png@01CE75C2.1AFBFC30cid:image006.jpg@01CE75C7.2B04CE40

I am beginning to wonder if John Charles and Annie Elliott did in fact have a son called James Charles at all?

Proposed Change: Ingram, William Wilfred (I84071)

Tree: Eden Monaro Pioneers

Link: http://monaropioneers.com/TNG/getperson.php?personID=I84071&tree=MP

Description: Wilfred was born in the Monaro district and went to the Towamba Valley when he was 11 years old, staying there till the age of 68, when he returned to the Monaro.  He married Dorothy South in 1986 at the age of 71 for companionship (told by Wilf to my parents).

An article in the Wyndham Observer (date unknown) stated that Wilf spent his life among stock around the Nungatta, Perico and Towamba area and for years cared for stock on Alf Alexander's property which was part of the original Pericoe Station.  His knowledge of sheep, cattle and horses was wide and was published in a booklet, "Hoof Beats and Whip Cracks from the Past" which incorporated instructions on horse handling and training.  His life in the outdoors had made him very observant and he "can talk cattle and horses till the cows come home".  He corresponded with Roy De Bere of Marsden Park for many years after replying to a letter in the Sydney Mail.

He suffered a loss in 1939 when his home was destroyed in the Ash Wednesday bushfires.  (Sydney Morning Herald, 12 Jan 1939).

Ash Wednesday.  The homes of 6 families were destroyed in the Bega district. Those whose houses were lost included Messrs. L. King, South, Wilfred Ingram & George Arnold.  At Perico and Towamba, 27 men, women & children are homeless.  The school building was also destroyed.

An article by Wilf Ingram, published in the Bombala Times in 1981 described the trip by road from the coast to Bombala as follows:

"In the period 1832-60 all the roads from the coastal ports of Eden, Pambula and Merimbula junctioned at the Roan Horse Inn at South Pambula, thence took the route to Honeysuckle, near Wyndham, thence to the Stockyard Inn at the Rocky Hall crossing Cow Bail Creek through the Coal Hole, climbing the ridge to the Chimneys...then on to the top of Woolingubrah, thence to George and Dragon Inn at Cathcart, and finally to Bombala".

Cathcart was on the main passenger route from Bombala to Sydney, by coastal steamer from Merimbula or Tathra.  Its population in 1884 included:  3 accommodation-house proprietors, a hotel-keeper, 3 storekeepers, a post master, a butcher, 3 road contractors, a carpenter, a boot maker, a dress maker, a produce dealer, 3 sawmill proprietors, a limeburner, a blacksmith, and 5 carriers. (1884 Post Office Directory).

My parents met Wilf in 1988 at his home in Bombala named "Fifield House".

He was quite a character, wearing a wide-brimmed hat with corks dangling from the brim to keep the flies away from his face.

Patricia McGufficke

Hi Patricia,

Thank you so much for all the wonderful extra details you have provided, we are very grateful.  The James Charles Ingram we show born October 22, 1911 has parents Charles and Ada I according to the NSW BDM Index.  His Military service details from the WW2 Nominal roll shows his birth was October 22, 1911 Bombala with NOK Olive.  It could certainly be Olive Joyce Peisley and they could have married in Victoria but I have no means of confirming that unfortunately.  His enlistment was in Victoria which is consistent with what you say.

Description: Hi,

I am not actually wanting a change.   Regarding Agnes Hunt. I looked up the shipping record for the David Scott and the hand written list actually shows her as Agnes Hammond.  So if she was Hammond on the ship....where does the 'Hunt' name come from..............or if as the Trove article states these women were educated and were going to serve as governesses etc. Is it likely that the children Joseph and Elizabeth were fathered by someone named 'Hunt'

or perhaps a Convict who worked for the person she was sent to work for.

Name of the person she was to work for is on the list but hard to decipher the name.  Look forward to hearing your thoughts.

Regards Mary Twyford.

Hi Mary,

The information we have is from a very early contribution to the project and as such had not previously been checked by me.  I have looked at the immigration records and agree with your conclusion that Agnes' surname was Hammond and not Hunt and will amend our records accordingly.

Comments (Sellers, William George): How do I find out the contributor's name for the Sellers family tree?

There is a discrepancy in the birth details of William George Sellers. The copy of his birth details show that he was born in Victoria not NSW as is presented. He married a member of the Wenban family who is a relation of mine.

I was initially looking for confirmation of his birth and having found it discovered the anomaly in the data.

I would be pleased if the contributor or yourself can tell me which is correct?

Sharyn Walsh

Hi Sharyn,

Thanks for bringing that error to our attention, the birth location is most definitely in Victoria and I will amend our records.

Comments: I thought that I sent this but actually I wiped it, so I am sending it again I have noticed a couple of errors in my Great-Grandfather FREDERICK JOHN ROBINSON'S page (1)You have my Great-Great-Grandmother JULIA ROBINSON listed as arriving in Australia in Sydney on board Sir Henry Hardige in JULY 1853,But she first arrive in Melbourne on board the Sir Henry Hardige in July 1853, She the sailed to Sydney aboard the Shamrock 111 in late Dec 1853 there she married William Worland (Weiland on marriage  certificate) in early January 1854 before moving to Dangelong to live she later married anther 2 times but only ever had the 1 child

(2) You have a Frederick Walters listed as my Great-Grandfather FREDERICK JOHN ROBINSON'S father and as there is no documented proof of this and it is purely based on supposition and a fair bit of fiction that would make any girlie love story novel seem dull by comparison and ALSO on both FREDERICK'S Birth and Baptism certificates JOHN FREDERICK ROBINSON is down as being his father

(3) My Great Aunt MAUDE WESTON (born Robinson) was born at Bunyan 31 march

1892  not 1884 I would very much appreciate these errors being taken care of

Comments: I wish to join your research group and contribute my information on the families of WATERSON, SCOTT, STAFFORD and JOHNSTON being pioneers of the Monaro and the Bega valley.  Your site has been fantastic with its information and at present I am writing a comprehensive book on the life and family of the WATERSONS of BEGA and WALLAGOOT commencing with the convict William WATERSON.  I have inherited 150 years of photos and information regarding this family.  I also wish to add a substantial amount of information re Thomas SCOTT of Mittagang Rd, Cooma, my great grandfather and builder of the grand old house, Patshull or in Ash Garrard's day, Hatsell, Cooma.  I am a direct descendant of William WATERSON, the convict, and have covered his life and family from 1725 in England to the present, in Wallagoot, Bega, inclusive of photos and documents.  Yes, I do have some information and photos on the convict's family that went north to Qld and northern NSW, but I am staying with the Bega Valley descendants.

Please let me know how to join your group and contribute.  When I mention a book that I am compiling, it is really a comprehensive, detailed collection of photos, stories, anecdotes and actual research that I will ultimately have printed but wish to have available on line as well.

Sincerely,   Lynneeta Darmody

Hi Lynneeta,

Our process is a simple, you send me the information and photos you want to add and I will update our website.  By the sounds of it there will be significant additions to the Waterson page on our site and you will be listed as a contributor thereto.  We can also publicise your book in our newsletter and reference it on website as well when it is completed.
