NEW
HEADSTONE IMAGES
Hi Folks,
Over the last couple of weeks I have received two great contributions, lots and lots of photos of headstones.
David Povey has provided images for the Christ Church Cemetery in Cooma, Old Adaminaby, Bredbo, Michelago, Jerangle, and Mittagang Road, Cooma cemeteries. I am still working my way through these images and adding them to the MP database, each linked to the individual(s) concerned and it may be a few more weeks before I finish.
Carlene Harris has also supplied images for Bairnsdale, Bombala, Delegate, Nimmitabel and Orbost which I will get to when I have completed the Mittagang Road Cemetery.
You can view these images in the database by using the Cemeteries and/or Headstones options and selecting a specific cemetery or you can search for a specific individual who you know is buried in one of these cemeteries to see if there is now a headstone image available. Alternatively you can use the "What's new in the last 30 days" option to see what images have been added recently.
I would like to thank these kind and generous people for their marvellous contributions and hope the images are beneficial for your research.
Regards,
Ian Harvey

Hello David
I would like to introduce myself. My name is Sue Zammit and I live in Gisborne, Victoria. My fathers mothers family were the Smith family from Braidwood NSW. Subject: mcdonald descendant of the Manaro
Dear Ian,
I do hope that this email link from the Monaro Pioneers is current and that I can make contact once more with other searchers.
My name is David MacDonald Roache and in the past (possibly about 2005/6) I added vital information as a descendant of Hugh (Ewen) and Janet McDonald (who ran the sub post office at The Tea Gardens, Holts Flat, NSW, until 1902/3) who took up residence in Nimmitabel itself in 1903.
My Father was Alexander MacDonald Roache (born Torpoint, Cornwall 1909), the first born child of Adelaide Hayden (from Jessie McDonald and John Hayden) and Patrick Roache, Jessie being a daughter of Janet and Hugh McDonald from Inverness-Shire, who arrived on the Manaro in 1858).
As I have lost touch with the above, and especially as Pattrick Buckley (who descends from Jessie's older sister. Isabella) who so enthusiastically helped me in my quest from 2003-2007 is no longer able to share the story with me, I would be more than happy to make further contact re the above.

Hi Ian
My apologies. Her date of death was 11th MARCH 1861 not 10th March 1863 as I
stated - a typo on my part - however, her Gravestone in Reid CofE Cemetery in
Canberra shows her death date as 10th Mar 1861.
I've attached a copy of her Death Cert. which confirms it as 11th March.
However, as her DC confirms, her Maiden/Own Name IS McDonald and NOT Ross .
Something else:
We're having difficulty identifying which of the two Kenneth McDonalds on the
William Nicol was married to Catherine. You have him as born 1805 with 1
child. Whereas the Pax List shows the one age 31 (born 1806) as having 2
children and the one age 27 (born 1810) as having 1 child.
I also note that you show Kenneth as born in Glengarvie, Rothshire (Ross-shire I
presume). However, Glengarvie is in Strathdon in the Gordon District of
Aberdeenshire.
We have been unable to find baptisms for Archibald or Margaret in the CofS OPRs
or the RC Birth & Baptism records. Likewise for their marriage.

Hi Ian
Thanks. Although Archibald was buried as RC we can't find his birth, nor his marriage to Margaret, in the Catholic Records. We'll let you know if we find out anything more about these McDonalds.

Subject: PHOTOGRAPH
Dear Ian,
I am a genealogist living in Cooktown in Queensland's Far North. A friend of mine who demolition work in Cairns, at times comes up with old papers and the odd photograph with rear identification. Recently he gave me the photograph of a young lady named on the rear by her serviceman boyfriend. I did some research and the homeland is in your quarter. I am not at home right now but will be so in a few days. If you would like the photo and research let me know and I shall get it to you. The name comes up on your index. Although found in rubble it is in fair condition. It would make a nice little love and otherwise story for your news letter. How the photograph came to be in Cairns is a mystery which may be solved by way of publication. All I would ask is that you keep me in the loop. I would like to know the answer if it surfaces.
Kind regards, Jim McJannett.
Thanks Jim for the offer, we would be happy to receive your material and add to our newsletter.

Description: Hello, I am enquiring about Joseph Bailey, son of John and Elizabeth Bailey. He is my 2 x great grandfather. My records show he died in 1928 at his home in Lawson and/or his daughter's home in Leichhardt, NSW on 22 April,1928, aged 69. According to his death certificate, he was born in Cooma in 1859. His father John listed as a drover. He was married to Louisa Butler from the Patricks Plains region of the Hunter Valley. Family legend has it that he was part of a stock run taking cattle to Normanton in North Queensland in the late 1880's. His bride to be Louisa travelled by ship alone to meet him there where they married and had 2 children, Queenie Norma and Rueben John William Bailey. They returned to Sydney via Singleton where a 3rd child was born, Martha who died as an infant in 1893. I believe he is from the Bailey family of the Monaro region but of course your records point to him as dying in Ulmarra the same year. Further evidence points to him coming from this region as he is listed as living in Newtown in 1915, his address listed as Carlisle St, "Monaro"being the house name.
I would appreciate any information you could provide me on the Bailey family and where Joseph may fit in.
Kind regards, Ann Lopez
Hi Ann,
Thanks for the information, I will amend our records accordingly. All the information we have on the Bailey family is available on our website.

John LINDSAY (ID I136821) Newsletter 8-2013
Hi Monaro Pioneer’s
In November 2014 I came across the Monaro Pioneer webpage. Therefrom I noted the John Lindsay enquiry by researchers Mr & Mrs Jennings in the archived newsletters. By definition, John Lindsay is my Great Great Uncle being that his youngest sister Mary Ann Lindsay is my Great Grandmother.
Family researcher’s knowledge of the Lindsay family is limited and until six months ago we were only aware of the existence of Mary Ann and some information post 1872.
John Lindsay:
Following the death of their mother Catherine in 1852, the five eldest children (Margaret, John, William [Jno], George, Peter) were admitted into ORMOND HOUSE Paddington NSW on 22nd December 1852. Mary Ann was admitted on the 26th April 1854 with her age being recorded as 2years2months.Official Registration records states the family were of the Presbyterian faith & that Catherine was deceased. [Sourced from actual copies of the ORMOND HOUSE admissions register supplied by NSW State Government Records]
Admissions to the Institution could be apprenticed from the age of 12 but remained under Institutional responsibility until reaching 19yo.
On the 5th September 1856, John was apprenticed to the Rev Thomas Druitt of Christ Church Cooma along with his eldest sister Margaret. (Mary Ann was apprenticed in 1861 to Rev Druitt.)
(The following has been sourced mainly from the Manaro Mercury)
By January 1870 John operated a Carrier Business between Cooma & the coast (Merimbula). It is understood that horses were used in the haulage.
In 1871 he married Margaret White (no additional information known)
By 1892, John had accumulated various rural properties in and around Cooma exceeding 100 acres in total.
Between 1881 & 1909 John served on the Jury at Cooma Court House on an irregular basis.
In both 1904 & 1907 John was elected to the Council of Commoners for Cooma Commons.
Also there were a few passing references of no significance noted during the research.
The death of John was announced in the Manaro Mercury 9th July 1928 – having passed away the previous Thursday. Cause of Death was pneumonia. At the time of death the family residence was in Hill Street Cooma. His wife Margaret had died several months earlier. (Details unknown)
John & Margaret had one daughter Margaret Isabella Lindsay. She was born in 1876 and known as “Bella”.
My only knowledge of Bella was her obituary that appeared in the Goulburn Evening Post 6th June 1941. Bella had been admitted to Kenmore Hospital Goulburn on 20th December 1927 suffering depression. She was an unrestricted patient & remained in residence for the remainder of her 63 years. Bella never married. On 26th May 1941, whilst walking along the banks of the Wollondilly River Bella slipped on rocks falling into the river & was drowned. The coroner’s inquest determined that the death was an accidental drowning and not suicide. (The newspaper report is fairly detailed)
Of John’s Siblings:
Margaret Lindsay was apprenticed to Rev Druitt 5th September 1856. She married Samuel Hain in 1863 & over the following four decades built a substantial retail business and large property portfolio in Cooma. Samuel died as a result of a Buggy accident in 1899 & Margaret died of influenza in 1918.
Peter Lindsay died 2nd October 1859 whilst in residence at Ormond House (by now known as Randwick Asylum for Destitute Children). He was buried at St Jude’s Anglican Church Randwick 3rd October 1859. The coronial report was published in full detail in the Sydney newspaper “The Empire” on 4th October 1859. It confirmed his death was as the result of Congestive Apoplexy and Peter had a previously undiagnosed Brain disease. (There was also a brief reference in the Sydney Morning Herald 8th October 1859)
Mary Ann Lindsay was apprenticed to the Rev Druitt in 1861 although only 9yo. She married Henry James Willis on the 11th December 1872 in the presence of her sister Mrs Margaret Hain. (See the Sydney Morning Herald 30th December 1872) Henry & Mary Ann established a Brick Manufacturing business in Cooma which was successfully operated until Henry’s retirement. Mary Ann died in 1930 following a short illness.
William Lindsay (Jno) was assigned to Dr H Douglass (a Member Of Parliament & Medical Doctor) on 17th July 1857. The Monaro Pioneers web page indicates his death in 1927 in Young NSW. However I am unable to confirm whether this is correct as the obituary in the newspaper has a three year discrepancy in age. It also states that William was a native of Grenfell & moved to Young during the Gold rush. (See Grenfell & Lachlan Advertiser 16th May 1927)
George Lindsay was apprenticed to Mr Hindmarsh of Kiama in October 1860. The Hindmarsh family were the principal pioneer family of that region & still have a major role there today. The Monaro Pioneer web page indicates his death in 1897 in Paddington NSW. However it is possible that this is incorrect as there is a 20 year age difference between George‘s age & that of the deceased recorded in the newspaper obituary. (See Sydney Morning Herald 26th May 1897)
Footnote on ORMOND HOUSE (From 1857 called The Randwick Asylum for Destitute Children)
Ormond House was established in June 1852 to cater for destitute children who were ineligible for adoption. Surviving parents of children admitted to care were required to make a financial contribution for their upkeep. It was established with support of the Government to address the chronic issues associated with existing orphanages. The standard of care for the children was significantly improved. (Note: John was recorded as the 62nd admission to the Institution.)
(See Sydney Newspaper “The Empire” 17th January 1860 and 4th January 1861 for profiles on Randwick Asylum. An alternate critical review of the Parramatta Orphanage appeared 14th July 1860 & explains the need for Ormond House –Randwick Asylum)
The Lindsay parents:
I have been unable to confirm any details regarding William Lindsay (SNR). It appears that the name was reasonably common in that period making correct identification almost impossible without a confirmed event.
However a webpage with an association to the Hain family (refer “Turnbull Clan”) states Catherine’s maiden name was Catherine Wilson however no prior ancestral information was listed.
Having exhausted a number of potential identities; I have entertained the remote possibility that William Lindsay (snr) and Catherine Wilson may be those who were passengers & travelled in separate family groups on the “Lady Kennaway” in 1838. The ship left Leith, Scotland in April 1838 with around 280 assisted migrants & arrived in Sydney 11th August 1838. All passengers were listed as Protestant (Unspecified) religion. However at best this is guesswork but may assist further research if not previously considered. I became aware that the William Lindsay from that voyage “disappeared” from his family researches from 1841. Catherine is of the correct age.
Although the above does not provide a great deal of information concerning the Lindsay’s I hope my small contribution may be of some assistance (even if it is 18 months late).

Description: The records state that Henry John Collins was wounded on Gallipoli on 27 August 1915. I think this has been a topographical error, as the actual correct date is 07 August 1915. Which is also the date of the battle of Lone Pine although, without all my records to hand, I am unable to confirm whether he was actually wounded at this site. His date of death is correct, according to military records. I am still unable to confirm being related to him, but some of his and his families belonging were found amongst my Grandmother's belonging after she passed away, her maiden name was also Collins.

Smith family information
Hi Ian
This is a bit “way out there” but I am hoping you may be able to help.
I was recently perusing my father’s army service record and on it was listed his Next of Kin and the name listed was Yvonne Emerald Agars (nee Smith) from Bega in NSW.
I googled this name and it brought me to the basic information on Rootsweb (Ancestry) and I noted that it said under the scant information that there was a “living female child”.
Now my father was divorced from Yvonne in about 1942 (she took one look at the farm and old house in South Australia out in the back blocks of nowhere and decided she didn’t like the look of it – understandably) and in later years he went on to marry my mother.
I believe that my father did not know of a child to this relationship and this female child would be my half-sister of whom no-one in the family is aware.
I have no information of her name or anything but believe she is still living. Is there any way I could find out from any other “Smith” family members if she is still alive/her name/and where she lives or a contact please?
The family information is, Yvonne’s father was VICTOR CRISPAN ONSLOW SMITH and he married LEILA MILLICIENT WILLIAMS. Their child was YVONNE EMERALD SMITH and my fathers name was MAXWELL JAMES AGARS. He died in 1982 in Elliston, South Australia.
Thank you for your time
Robyn Watts (nee Agars)
Hi Robyn,
I suggest you try our database search facility on our website www.monaropioneers.com where you will find more detail on the Smith Family. Unfortunately, the information we have received only refers to a female Smith (living) and we have no other details. However, this email will be included in our next newsletter and perhaps one or more of our readers may be able to assist you.

Subject: Thomas Fletchett (Fletcher)
Hello Ian,
Regarding Thomas Fletchett (Fletcher aka Walker) born abt 1813 in Somersetshire, England and died 3rd Feb 1906 at Cambalong. On MP database it states he was a convict and came to Australia in 1833 on “Neva 111”. I have conflicting info that says Thomas was sentenced to 14 yrs in 1834 and came to the colony aboard “Waterloo”. Also that he was of a titled family and that his father, William, was the last of his family to assume the title. Thomas, not being a fit subject to receive the title. There are 3 males descending from him in Australia unable to claim the title.
On an 1851 England Census, it states that William, Thomas’s father, was a labourer as was one of his sons and another son was a blacksmith. Surely one would think if he was titled he would not be working as a labourer. How can I find out where this story of being titled came from. It is really baffling me and also my husband as it is his great great grandfather. Any light you can shed on this for us would be wonderful. Also on Thomas’s wife, Sarah Phebe McNamara, was she a convict or a free settler, and where did she come from? Many thanks Ian. You are doing a great job on MP.
Hi Alison,
Thank you for the kind words.
Do you have any documentary evidence that Thomas Fletchett arrived on the "Waterloo". From what I can find in the convict records online on Ancestry.Com the Thomas Flechett/Fletcher who arrived on the Waterloo was tried in Suffolk. Very confusing when there are two people with nearly identical details arriving so close together.
As to how you could substantiate the "claim" he was from a titled family I am unable to assist you unfortunately. Perhaps one of our newsletter readers can help?
Sarah McNamara came free to the colony.
Regards, Ian
Thank you Ian, I will have to dig deeper unless someone reads this and can throw some light on it for me.
Alison
Hello Ian,
I have searched the Australian Convict Transportation Register and the Thomas Fletcher/Fletchett aka Thomas Walker (his mother was Charlotte Walker) was also sentenced to 14 years, came out on the “Waterloo”, was convicted on 23rd July, 1834, and he was sent to Tasmania (Van Dieman’s Land), so I think this has solved the query, as our Thomas was sent to NSW. Yes, very confusing with same names, the clue was knowing that he used an alias and thankfully that showed up on the Register. I can’t find Sarah McNamara on the Free Immigration list that matches our Sarah, the only one that is listed arrived in 1845 on the Herald but in my records she married Thomas in 1842, maybe that is also wrong. Hopefully one of our MP readers can help.
Thank you again Ian.

Hi David & Ian,
Happy New Year to all at Monaro Pioneers.
I thought you may be interested in the story below, about a Bridle family reunion at Adaminaby on New Year's Day, which I also sent to the Tumut & Cooma papers.
My father, Clyde Bridle, who is the only surviving member of the Jim & Clara (nee Green) Bridle family, turned 91 today & is still going strong.
Kind regards, Maree Myhill (nee Bridle)
Hello to Tumut & Cooma paper editors,
The following story & photographs may be of interest to you, re. the Bridle family spending the day at Adaminaby on New Year's Day. Clyde Bridle from Tumut is the only remaining member of the Bridle family of Jim & Clara, & is aged 90 years. The day at Adaminaby was spent visiting old family properties.
Kind regards,
Maree Myhill (nee Bridle)

Bridle Reunion on New Year’s Day at Adaminaby
Descendants of Jim and Clara Bridle (from East Blowering and Tumut) met at Adaminaby on New Year’s Day. Clyde Bridle is the only remaining child of Jim and Clara, at almost 91 years of age, and was joined by nieces and nephews from Tumut, Cooma, Canberra, Queanbeyan, and his daughter from Young for the day.
The group met at Adaminaby’s Big Trout for morning tea. From there, they drove along the Bugtown Road to the old Bridle property, known as ‘Pheasant Hill’, which was 8 miles from Old Adaminaby. Clyde’s brother Jack Bridle was known to say, “There were no pheasants, no bugs and no town”. (The term pheasants may have referred to native lyrebirds around the area.) They found interesting old items scattered around the old house site and dam, including a cast iron boiler and a single furrow plough. Jim and Clara’s other eight children were all born at Adaminaby, when they resided at ‘Pheasant Hill’ from 1906 to 1920, before they moved to Blowering, near Tumut. The children went to Hollymount, a subsidised bush-school, where they walked 4 miles to the school. Jim had the Yaouk to Adaminaby mail run for many years, a round trip of 40 miles 3 times a week on horseback.
A picnic lunch was shared under a shady tree on the property, where Clyde proposed a toast of “Happy New Year” to everyone.
The convoy then drove to the old property known as ‘Bugtown’, 2 miles further along the creek, then back to ‘Glynwood’, the old Green family property which belonged to the Bridle siblings’ grandparents. The Bridle family often walked the 2 miles to visit them. The original brandmark of ‘AGG’, of Andy Green of Glynwood, was taken for display on the day. None of these original old buildings survive, but several trees are now the landmarks of these properties, namely gums and fruit trees at ‘Pheasant Hill’, poplars and fruit trees at ‘Bugtown’ and pine trees at ‘Glynwood’.
It was a wonderful day of reminiscing, remembering stories heard over the past 90 years and the Bridle folk no longer with us, including Jack and Naomi Bridle, Rolfe Bridle, Kitty and Duncan Prosser from Tumut, and Trixie and Ronald Clugston from Adaminaby.
