PLEASE NOTE THE FOLLOWING REQUEST FROM THE BOMBALA & DISTRICT HISTORICAL SOCIETY REGARDING UNMARKED GRAVES IN BOMBALA CEMENTRY

Subject: Monaro Pioneers Newsletter/Bombala Cemetery Unmarked Graves

Dear Mr Knox,

The Monaro Pioneers Newsletter/website apparently contains an item that is incorrect/misleading

The Bombala Cemetery Committee does not have a “list” of unmarked graves.

What we, and the Bombala & District Historical Society, have is an extract of the Register of Deaths in Bombala.

If a person believes they have a relative buried in the Bombala Cemetery and are unable to locate their grave we can check to see if they are on that list.

The Committee has set up a memorial wall upon which relatives can, on payment, arrange for a plaque to be placed to recognise that their relative is buried somewhere in the Cemetery.

I have received a large number of requests for the “list” of unmarked graves and would very much appreciate it if you could publish a correction/clarification in your Newsletter

Regards

Chris Philbrick

Hello David

I would like to introduce myself. My name is Sue Zammit and I live in Gisborne, Victoria. My fathers mothers family were the Smith family from Braidwood NSW. The father was Joseph Smith Born in 1843 in Pinxton, Derbyshire England. He married in 1867 in New Zealand to Mary Jane Granger She was born in 1853 in Surrey, England. They went on to have 16 children. The moved to Braidwood New South Wales, Australia in 1891 and Mary Jane went on to have another3 children, one of which was my grandmother Ethel Dorothea Louisa Smith. One of the Smith girls married into the Willoughby family that was settled in Braidwood. That is where the reunion starts. The Willoughby reunion is to be held at the RSL Club in Braidwood on 26,27,28 Sept 2015 There is a Facebook page under Willoughby reunion. I was wondering if you may be able to put a notice on your web site adverting for any descendents of John Willoughby and Mary Ann Mills. She was a half cast aboriginal. I have loads of information on the whole family if your are interested. I can be contacted at email suzyq14@bigpond.com There should be a very healthy turnout as the Willoughby clan is huge.

Many thanks for your time, hope to hear back from you .

Hello Ian

I understand you manage the database for the Monaro Pioneers and you will know what to do with attached information.  I have been looking up information for my son-in-law's family tree.  His name is Warren Edward Melville, son of Ronald Edward Melville (and Isobel Alderton), who, in turn, is the son of Raymond G Melville.

I have attached two transcriptions for a Morton Wallace Melville.  I think this is the same person as your Marton W Melville.  Have a look and see if you agree.

Also I've just found a birth for Maude Melville:  9887/1900

MELVILLE

MAUD

  ADAMINABY

Is this your Maude Melville?

Regards,  Helen Kirwin (nee Malligan)

Thank you Helen, I believe you are correct and your transcription evidence certainly proves it.

No worries - I like to share when I can and because you are also sharing information with me too.

BROWN

Sent: Monday, 2 March 2015 5:44 PM
Subject: Olive Minnie Brown Marriage to Elwin Timothy Starr

Hi,

I am researching the Brown Family and I notice you have the wrong Olive Minnie Brown and Elwin Timothy Starr Marriage

The New South Wales Births, Deaths and Marriages Registry has only one couple down, marriage at Broken Hill 1898

Which is why I see it in a lot of family trees for this family

However, there is a mistake in the Registry which when typing in a search for Olive Minnie Brown’s marriage, only the Broken Hill one is shown

Because the correct marriage is under Olive Minnie Browm, mistakenly spelt with an M instead of an N,

This is the correct Olive Minnie Brown married at Forest Reefs, District of Carcoar 1898 Reg No 7611/1898 to Elwin Timothy Starr son of Joshua Starr and Harriet Smith

Olive Minnie Brown’s  parents are John Benjamin Brown and Emma Maisey

John Benjamin Browns family lived in the Cadia – Forest Reefs area, originally as Gold Miners, later as farmers, before Elwin and Olive went to Manly around 1920’s

I hope this helps

Kind Regards, C Read

Hi James,

Thanks for letting us know.

Hi, I am researching my husband's family tree. His father is Hamilton Keith Schuback born 8th October 1918 at Bexley, New South Wales. His next of kin, or his mother as my husband believes is Ada Schuback one of your pioneers. His brothers are Wallace, Douglas, Percy and John but I note that on all records on family trees Hamilton is missing even on your records, so could you please correct me if I am wrong even though I am waiting for copies of marriage certificates and birth records.

Thanking you for your time.

Dinah Schuback.

Hi Dinah,

Thank you for the information.  We were not aware of Hamilton until now because we had not received any information regarding his birth but now he is included in our records as a child of John and Ada Florence Schuback.

KELLY

Subject: pioneer family

Hello Ian

My name is Judith Bailey and I am researching my Mother’s family line,

Her Great Grandparents were Rose and William Kelly,

One of their daughter’s namely ….Catherine Kelly, married a George Allen in 1877 in Cooma, they had 5 children a couple of them born in Bombala, 2 in Cooma and one child born Queanbeyan, whilst the last 2 in Sydney.

Rose Kelly, Catherine’s mother,  died in September 1873 whilst giving birth to her 13th child, both died then.

In the paper it states that she was from IRONMONGIE

Could you possible tell me where this is,  I have looked everywhere without success, I do know someone that comes from Bombala and they have never heard of it either, Google doesn’t give me an answer either.

Would this be a property name.  if it existed would it be close to Bombala or Cooma.

My husband and I would like to come down to that area and do a search in the cemeteries for lost relatives from the Kelly and Allen family, as their parents were there as well.

Thanking you, hope you will be able to help me, on my question to IRONMONGIE

Regards, Judith Bailey

Hi Judith,

Ironmongie is a property name, there is no town or village there and it is located on the road (more a dirt track) between Nimmitabel and Dalgety.   My wife's GGgrandfather owned a selection there in the 1860's.  I have attached a photo of the only indication of anything called Ironmongie I could find on the that road.  It is a very desolate place and would have been hellishly cold in winter.

We have scant details of George and Catherine Allen and family in our database so I would be very grateful if you could supply the details of the family and descendants so that the Allen family can properly be included in the Monaro Pioneers records.

Regards,  Ian

  Ian,

I think we are all wrong with dates of the husband of Catherine Woodfield (17.4.1851 – 10.6.1940) – James Dawson (19.9.1858 – 29.9.1934) for the following reasoning –

………………….

Publication: Raymond Terrace Examiner & Lower Hunter & Port Stephens Advertiser

Date: Thursday 4 October, 1934   Section: Legal Notices   Page Number:  3

In the Supreme Court of New South Wales Probate Jurisdiction In the two Wills of JAMES DAWSON late of Sturgeon Street, Raymond Terrace, Labourer deceased.

APPLICATION will be made after fourteen days from the publication hereof  that Probate of the two Wills of the above- named deceased may be granted to BEATRICE MARY DAWSON the sole Executrix named therein and all persons having any claims against the Estate of the said deceased are required to forward particulars thereof to the undersigned within the said period and all notices may be served at the under mentioned address.

MACKENZIE & CUNNINGHAM, Proctors for the sole Executrix Port Stephens Street, Raymond Terrace.

By their Agents: — R. N. Henderson and   Taylor, Solicitors, 88 Pitt Street, Sydney

………………..

I believe that his death date was 14 September, 1933 – son of John and Margaret – at Cooma aged 76 years.

Publication: The Sydney Morning Herald     Date: Wednesday 27 September, 1933

Section: Legal Notices   Page Number:  3

IN THE SUPREME COURT of NEW SOUTH WALES - Probate Jurisdiction - In the Will of JAMES DAWSON late of Cooma in the State of New South Wales Gentleman deceased. - Application will be made alter fourteen days from publication hereof that Probate of the last Will of the abovenamed deceased may be granted to CHARLES EDWARD FOXALL and EDGAR SAMUEL MAWSON the Executors named therein And all persons having any claims against the Estate of the above  named deceased are requested to forward particulars thereof to the undersigned within the said period and all notices may be served at the undermentioned address. BLAXLAND MAWSON and ROSE Proctors for the Executors Cooma.

By their Agents, FAITHFULL MADDOCK and BALDOCK, 20 O'Connell street, Sydney.

I hope this clears things up. I can’t find a birth date for James, but about 1857 would give him 76 years.

Hi Rodney,

The only information we have is available on our website. We do have Annie C. Quigley, daughter of Fanny Quigley but no birth details. The initial C could be Charlotte hence the name Lottie.

Dear Ian

Thank you for your wonderful website. It is a great source of information. I have only registered recently and am unfamiliar with the processes - am not sure which of the list of contributors to approach, so I am happy for you to forward this email, to whoever you think appropriate.

I have recently posted a dozen stories of Monaro Anzacs (cousins) on the NAA "Discovering Anzacs" website. I would like to know please, who I would request permission from, to use a couple of sentences re the parents/grandparents/great grandparents of Private Jack Blake son of John Blake (MP3106.)  I just wish to use their names, their spouse's names and date of immigration from Ireland and where they lived prior to Monaro, to add to Private Jack Blake's life story on "Discovering Anzacs."

Also I would like to contact the contributor for Private Victor Lindsay Goodwin (MP 61490) in the hope someone in the family has a photo that could be posted on the "Discovering Anzacs" website.

Once I have tracked down photos, for all these Monaro Anzacs, I hope to create a link from "Discovering Anzacs" to Monaro Pioneer Index for each of them. The Centenary of the First World War, I think, is a great opportunity to get these stories told.

Regards Ann Tracey

Hi Ann,

We have no contact information for the Blake family but you have our permission to use the information on our site.  We do ask that you reference our site in your material as the source.

The Goodwin family does have a page on our Pioneers Index with a contact list you can use.

If you discover any photos of soldiers that we do not have, we would appreciate a copy so that our database can be updated.

News and Notes

Mr. Joseph Martin died at his home at Coolumbooka on Saturday last. He had been ill for some time, and as he had reached the advanced age of 80, death was not unexpected. The funeral on Sunday was largely attended as the deceased was well-known throughout the district, in which he had lived all his life, having been born at Cathcart. Rev. Father Roche read the burial service. The late Mr. Martin was married here, and it is only six months ago that his wife was laid to rest in the Bombala cemetery. Four sons and three daughters-mourn the loss of their parents. The sons are Ernest, Thomas, Oswald, and Eric, and the daughters Mrs. A. Cameron, Mrs. Russell (Bega), and Mrs. French (Coraki). As showing the faithfulness of his service it may be mentioned that the deceased was in the employ of the late Mr. Edwards for 36 years, and only retired a few years ago.

The late Mr. Joseph Martin, who died on Friday 21st July, at the residence of his daughter, Mrs. A. Cameron, must have been one of the first white children born on Southern Monaro. We understand that Mrs. C. Elton, who is still alive and strong at 85, was the first white child born at Cathcart, so that had he been able to do so he could have written an interesting history of  Old Monaro , in the days when the blacks practically had possession, and white folks were very few

and far between, and the only mode of conveyance was the now despised bullock team. It seems a pity that so much of our early history should be buried with the pioneers.

DETAILS :

An inquest was held on Thursday afternoon, at the Commercial Hotel, on the body of William Munro Hatton, who was found dead on the Mila road on Wednesday afternoon.

Anne McLeod, wife of John McLeod, residing at Mila, deposed: The dead body I have just seen is, I believe that of William Hatton; I saw a man whom I believed to be Mr Hatton passing my place between 2 & 3 o clock yesterday afternoon; I knew Hatton, though I had only spoken to him once or twice, he was coming from the direction of Craigie and going towards the school at Mila; he was carrying a parcel on his back; he seemed to be walking quite as well as you expect a man of his age to; I saw him some distance along, and he appeared to be going along well; an hour or so after Mr Stone came to my place and told me there was a man lying on the road apparently dead or dying; I went to Mr T. Nicholson s and informed them, and Mr Harold Nicholson went with me to the place Mr Stone had mentioned; the man was dead, I believe, when we got there.

Richard Stone, deposed: I am a farmer, residing at Mila; the dead body I have just seen is that of a man named William Hatton, whom I saw lying 2 or 3 yards off the Mila road yesterday afternoon about four o clock; he seemed to have sat down on a log to rest and to have fallen over on his back; his feet were on one log and his head on a smaller one; I called out to him to get up, as he was in a very awkward position but he did not answer me; I then got out of the buggy and went over to him; I was under the impression that he was not dead when I lifted him up; his body was warm, but he did not reply to anything I said; he could not sit on the log, so I laid him alongside with his swag under his head; I then went to Mrs McLeod and informed her of the occurrence, after which I went home and returned in about an hour to where the deceased was lying, and remained there till the police arrived; the body when the police came was in the same position as I had placed it at first; I saw no signs of a struggle, nor any marks of violence on the deceased.

Harold Nicholson, deposed: I am a farmer residing with my parents at Mila; the dead body I have just seen is that of William Hatton; he was travelling, selling books I think; from something Mrs McLeod told me about half past four yesterday afternoon I went towards Mila Public School; I saw the deceased lying near a log close to the road; I stayed for a few minutes then sent for a fresh horse, and came to Bombala, and informed the police; I returned to the body in company with the police; he was dead when I first saw him.

Mary Jane Pauline, deposed: I am the wife of Alex. Pauline, residing in Bombala, and am a daughter of William Hatton, whose dead body I have just seen; it will be six weeks next Monday since I last saw him alive; he appeared to be in the best of health; he never had medical advice that I know of; I never knew him to be ill; he was a book agent for the last 18 months, he was 78 years of age last birthday; he was born in England, but I do not know in what part; he was much given to drink of late years; about 9 or 10 years ago I heard him threaten to drown himself, but I do not think from his behaviour of late that he would commit suicide.

Sergeant Carroll deposed: About half past 6 last night I proceeded to Mila, and saw the body of a man whom I recognised to be William Hatton; the body was lying near a log close to the road; beside him were two small oilcloth cases, containing two books, which I now produce; One of the books contains a number of letters and a list of subscribers to the book he was selling; I searched the body and found a pocket book, purse an d watch and chain (now produced); I conveyed the body to Bombala and then examined it; I found no marks of violence.

The jury retired, and after a short consultation brought in a verdict of  Found dead .

'Special lady' celebrates her 100th

>  By Josh Bartlett Feb. 5, 2013, 9:25 a.m.

Tathra s Winifred Robinson celebrates her 100th birthday with her children (from left) Brenda, Christine, Robert, Peter, Jimmy, Margaret, Billy and Susie.

WINIFRED Robinson was born the year stainless steel was invented and Australia began building the new federal capital of Canberra.

Mrs Robinson (nee Sproates), affectionately known to family members as Winnie , turned 100 yesterday.

Six generations of the Robinson/Sproates family gathered to celebrate the milestone on Sunday at the Tathra Beach Country Club.

More than 150 people filled the club s main room for the occasion.

Winifred Eileen Robinson was born at Wapengo on February 4, 1913, and was the eldest of eight Sproates children.

She grew up on the family farm and undertook her schooling years at Brogo.

Winnie would later marry farmer Creswell Robinson, who died in 1976.

For the past 20 years, Winnie has lived in retirement in Tathra with her daughter Brenda Hunt.

When asked the secret to her longevity, Winnie ays  no alcohol and no smoking , while she also recommends hard work and eating three good meals each day.

Winnie said she was now  going for 101 .

I knew I d make it because I wanted that letter from the Queen,  she said.

You don't notice the time going   I look back on it and it s gone fast.

Winnie has always been surrounded by family, including eight children, 29 grandchildren, 75 great-grandchildren and 19 great-great-grandchildren.

Among the guests at Sunday s celebrations were children Robert, Christine, Peter, Margaret, Jimmy, Billy, Brenda and Susie.

Family members travelled from all around Australia for the celebrations, including from Canberra, Western Australia, Victoria and Northern Territory.

Winnie's family celebrated the occasion with a specially designed birthday cake and drinks.

There were plenty of smiles and laughs as they reminisced about Winnie being a  great family woman .

Winnie reflected on her piano-playing abilities and the time she shared two dances at Brogo Hall with legendary Australian cricketer Sir Donald Bradman.

The family has held celebrations at Winnie s home each year since her 90th birthday, but moved to the Tathra Beach Country Club in 2013 to accommodate more people.

Brenda joked they had been making bets for years that Winnie would be  100 not out .

Winnie is so placid and quiet, but she s definitely a family woman,  she said.

She is a very special lady.

Great-granddaughter Keely Longmore said Winnie had a great sense of humour and was very entertaining.

I don t know what I would do without her.

Thanks,

Regards,  Ian

McDONALD

Subject: McDonald family Archibald and Margaret from Invernesshire

Hi Ian

In regard to the item in the current newsletter as below I offer the following comments for information only. I am not related to the family.

The headstone for Margaret McDonald in St John’s CofE Reid was not erected until 1995 by a direct descendant as noted in the book “St John’s Churchyard, Canberra 1844-2010”.  The discrepancy between the headstone and the death certificate could be explained by a number of reasons.

1.    The date in the Parish Register could have been incorrectly recorded.

2.    Jean Salisbury, the compiler of the above book could have incorrectly transcribed the date from the original parish register, however, Jean was meticulous in her recording of details. Jean was the Administrator of the churchyard for many years and maintained the register of burials. The Parish Register was the prime source of information for the book with additional sources consulted as applicable.

3.    The stonemason could have made an error – having recorded many cemetery inscriptions I have come across this on a number of occasions.

4.     The information given by her husband, Archibald, for the death certificate could have been incorrect. The death was not registered until 26th March – some 15 or 16 days later. His memory may have been clouded. We do stress in family history that the death certificate is the least reliable of the primary certificates, given that the information contained therein is only as good as the knowledge of the informant.

The correct Kenneth McDonald appears to be the one listed as age 32 and occupation Wheelwright. This Kenneth was sent to Singleton and further information gives his birthdate as c.1805 and residence as Singleton between 1837-40. The explanation for the two children is actually recorded on the website as - Hugh could be the surviving child, two children are listed in ship's records, and one listed in the doctor's report of having died on voyage.

Hugh is listed as born in Scotland in 1835 and Mary born in 1837 and died in 1837. Perhaps she was born and died on the voyage and is the child listed above. Even though Mary’s birth is registered in NSW this could have been because Sydney is the port of arrival. You would need to consult the microfilm for the actual entry - 4819/1837 V18374819 121B, as this is prior to civil registration.

The place of birth for Kenneth as Glengarvie is referred to by numerous spellings and he actually names his property at Burra, as Glengarve. It has also appeared as Glen Grieve/Glen Grievie. The place of birth of wife Catherine and other members of her family is Glenelg in Invernesshire which is very close to the border with Ross and Cromarty, therefore, it could be assumed that Gleng[arve]? or however it is spelt may be in a similar area and therefore in Ross & Cromarty. It may be that it is one of the small villages that no longer exist.

Being buried in the Church of England Cemetery of St John’s or the Catholic or Presbyterian portion of the Queanbeyan cemetery is not all that significant as far as religious denominations go. It seems that various members of the family are buried in each and have perhaps worshipped in or had an affiliation with whatever church was the most convenient. St John’s was the main churchyard for burials at this time for workers on the Duntroon estate. Indeed, Catherine and Kenneth’s daughter is buried at St John’s while they are buried in the Presbyterian Section of the Queanbeyan Cemetery.  The cemeteries are about 15-20 mins apart. The death certificate also mentions the marriage of Archibald and Margaret as occurring on Isle of Skye – perhaps these records may be available?

Kind regards,

Jan Grant

Thank you Jan,

Regards,  Ian

Hi Ian

My apologies.  Her date of death was 11th MARCH 1861 not 10th March 1863 as I stated - a typo on my part - however, her Gravestone in Reid CofE Cemetery in Canberra shows her death date as 10th Mar 1861. I've attached a copy of her Death Cert. which confirms it as 11th March. However, as her DC confirms, her Maiden/Own Name IS McDonald and NOT Ross .

Something else:

We're having difficulty identifying which of the two Kenneth McDonalds on the William Nicol was married to Catherine.  You have him as born 1805 with 1 child.  Whereas the Pax List shows the one age 31 (born 1806) as having 2 children and the one age 27 (born 1810) as having 1 child.

I also note that you show Kenneth as born in Glengarvie, Rothshire (Ross-shire I presume). However, Glengarvie is in Strathdon in the Gordon District of Aberdeenshire.

We have been unable to find baptisms for Archibald or Margaret in the CofS OPRs or the RC Birth & Baptism records. Likewise for their marriage.

Hi Ian

Thanks.  Although Archibald was buried as RC we can't find his birth, nor his marriage to Margaret, in the Catholic Records. We'll let you know if we find out anything more about these McDonalds.

Hi Bill, David and team,

Once again thanks for the newsletter and regular updates. They have been great for prompting me on family research.

My wife's family are Rogan's (F18781) - William Alfred Rogan(I239430) is her great grandfather.

I have been adding two books to our family tree that is all regarding the Rogan's:

"The Rogan Story" ( from Liverpool England to Wattle Point Baryulgil on the Upper Clarence River 1805-2004) by Barry Nesbitt

And the other

"The Rogue of Rogans Hill" Vol3.Part1 of Family connections compiled by K.M.Lynch

I was going to send the Legacy file but it is 11MB.

Looking through the World War One list on the site I noticed few people that should be added. The attached document lists all of our family that I have found who went to WW1. The final document was 19MB - so I have an abridged version. The Images and maps are all from the internet and are for my kids to understand the areas of the war, and how they related to us.

Person ID I239427 - Alexander Clyde Bailey - No.2590 was in the 9th Battalion.

Person ID I75928 - Ambrose Edward Becker - No. 1658 was in the 17th Infantry Battalion.

ID I93969 - Alfred Lesley Childs No.6525 - died Belgium

ID I152137 -George Henry Childs No.2038 - died at Bullecourt after fighting at Gallipoli.

They had a brother Arthur Harold Childs No. 7568 who was wounded twice, but the army brought him home because he was the last surviving brother. It had taken a while to verify the death of brother George unfortunately. He was born 1889 in Waterloo Sydney, and died 8 Sept 1926 in Newtown Sydney. He was married to Eileen Esther Ellen Clark born 1892 Sydney, and died 1969 Sydney. There were 3 boys (Alfred, George and Arthur) and 4 girls - Amy Ellen( 1886-1897), Nellie

(1895-1896), Miriam M. ( 1896- unknown) and Mary Jane (1901-1982).

ID I259578 - Cyril Austin Kerr - No. 3764 - died 17/8/18 and is buried at Harbonnieres.

ID I359571 - Robert William Kerr - No. 671 - was his brother and received the Military Medal.

ID I359576 - James Alfred Kerr - No.1155 - was the third brother. His information is in the documents.

ID I239434 - Manfred Lawrence Rogan - No. 331 - was at Gallipoli. He was a Trumpeter in the 1st Light Horse. When he came home, there were mentions in the Goulburn Evening Post (11/5/1918).

ID I359586 - Frederick Weary - No. 5217 was in the 49th Battalion and was wounded in action ( severe gunshot wound to his hand).

Regarding the BOER WAR,

ID I63719 - William John Piggott No.3340 was in the third NSW Mounted Rifles from 1900-1902. He mentions this on the first page of his WW1 enlisting, also that he spent time with Brabant's' Horse. He was known as Henry - and was recorded as William Henry Piggott in the Nominal roll. Both documents are attached.

Cheers!

Hi Ian

Noted your piece on photos, received in the Newsletter. Which reminded me, very belatedly, that I had taken some photos at Mt Cooper.  About 3 years ago I needed a break from a skiing holiday at Thredbo (the knees not coping!) and took the inspired decision to drive out to my ancestral Australian Rankin origins with camera.

I visited my mother’s uncle Donald Rankin’s farm Pineleigh, south of Bungarby, and then on to find Mt Cooper.  It was a glorious mid-winter’s day and the skies seemed to stretch forever.

Can you check if the above link to my photos at Flickr works, and if it appears to be just for those photos and thus preserves my privacy?  If so, please use it as you wish and you have my authority to give out the link, provided that any users or downloaders of images properly source the origins.

The Mt Cooper road sign photographed is on the Snowy River Way, not far from the Monaro Highway.  Clicking on one of the links at the top of the page gives Google Maps coordinates and directions.

I should stress that the gravestones are on private land, in the middle of a paddock that could contain animals.  Permission needs to be asked for access but I do not have the required contact information.  Perhaps a correspondent can help.  I absolutely fluked the paddock being empty and the gate open, and so no doubt I was trespassing in complete ignorance.

A neighbouring farmer told me that the Mt Cooper homestead back in time used to be underneath the conical mountain but it could become isolated in times of flood.  So the striking newer homestead, with its gardens full of metal sculptures, is more or less opposite the gate that gives access to the graves paddock.  When I was there, no-one was around.

Hi Bill,

Thanks for the information and the link, I will use the headstone images for the MP site if that is OK.
