Monaro Pioneers Newsletter
2016 Number 12
ANNOUNCEMENTS:
A LETTER FROM KELLIE
“A
site like Monaro Pioneers is not built by a handful of
Researchers/Administrators.”
A site like Monaro Pioneers is built by hundreds of people who all chip in that
bit of "knowledge" they have and the rest of us just try to match it all up to
make one BIG Tree.
I have worked on many sites and donated millions of hours, only to see those
sites get to 'size' where they close off and begin charging a "membership" fee
etc to access the data and research that I supplied for free. Not just me
either. I know of many researchers who gave up 'helping' because they ended up
having to pay to access data they researched and supplied for free. Not to
mention the hundreds of people who also end up having to pay for 'work/data'
that was supplied free of charge.
Many moons ago when I began helping on Monaro Pioneers that was the ONE thing I
kept checking and asking about...will it always be FREE?
Today we have a database that pretty much spans the world, is growing regularly
and is FREE for everyone. The Admins work to keep it FREE but it is YOU
people who help to keep it growing.
Each month in the newsletter people thank the Monaro Pioneers site. Today, I
would like to thank each and every one of YOU for taking the time to sign up,
join in and supply those bit's of data that none of us would ever know
about,,,,unless YOU told us.
Monaro Pioneers is built by ALL of you. I thank you for that and I am sure
everyone else does too.
Merry Christmas to you all and keep it coming.
It might only be one change or one bit of information BUT in a tree ONE change
can mean all the difference!
If you can, please chip in that bit of "knowledge" in the form of BDM
certificates, newspaper articles, etc which will help Monaro Pioneers to
continue growing and keep the MP Team off the streets.
A Plea from Ian
A glitch occurred with the database just before Christmas and some marriage links were corrupted. In some cases one or both spouses were missing or one or more children were missing or out of sequence.
I have been trying to restore these links and believe the majority of the problems ones have been resolved but I really need you all to check your various related families to see that all is as it should be.
Any help you can provide to validate the marriage links will be an enormous help and greatly appreciated. Please let me know of any problems or omissions you discover.
Regards, Ian

Description: OBITUARY.
It is with deep, regret that we have to record the death of Mrs. Gee, wife of
Mr. F. Gee bootmaker, of this town, which took place in the Hospital on Tuesday
last. The deceased was admitted to the institution a little over a week
previously. She was operated up on by Drs Buchanan and Traill a few days before
for an internal trouble, and although at one time it seemed that she was likely
to recover, complications occurred which resulted in her death.
The deceased lady, who was 40 years of age, was a native of Warrnambool,
Victoria, and came here only a few years ago. She was greatly esteemed by all
with whom she came into contact, and the news of her death under such sad
circumstances was received with profound regret in the community, and there were
many expressions of sympathy for her (husband and family in their sad
bereavement.
Mr. Gee, indeed, has experienced his full share of trouble since taking up his
residence in our midst. It was only about twelve months ago that he was burnt
out almost lock, stock and barrel in the fire which destroyed Mr. Cockerill's
building adjoining the Albion Hotel and he himself has suffered from sickness
since.
The funeral, which took place on Wednesday afternoon last ,was largely attended,
and reflected the higih esteem in which the deceased was held in the community.
The members of St Vincent Lodge, M.U.I.O.O.F, of which Mr. Gee was a member,
marched in the procession, four of the lady members of the Society acting as
pall-bearers. The pipers' band as a mark of respect came over from the
Recreation Ground to Wallace-street and stood bareheaded as the procession
passed by. The service at the graveside was conducted by the Rev. W. D. Kennedy
in the absence of Mr. Pacey, Presbyterian minister. Many beautiful wreaths were
placed on the coffin. Deceased leaves a husband and two children (Miss Ethel Gee
and Mr. S. Gee) to mourn her loss.

Hi Ian,
I've been researching a branch of my Nanna's family here in Peterborough SA, and
have a cross over with Alice Louise Griffiths (Monaro ID I263357) and Mark
Andrew Joseph Donnelly (Monaro ID F101091) in your database.
It's a pretty convoluted case - I've been working backwards to connect Alice to
Mark Donnelly by cross referencing electoral rolls and Trove digital newspaper
searches.
Essentially,
Alice and Mark separated at some point before 1931, when Alice is located in
Victorian electoral records in Brunswick. She's then found living close to/with
a Roland Neil Antuar in 1948, with his address being referenced in his divorce
case to
his
first
wife, Sylvia Lydia (nee Hemer), and is then living with Roland as Alice Louise
Antuar from 1954.
Sylvia went on to marry my g.g.aunt's brother in law, and is buried here in
Peterborough, which is where my interest comes in.
Sylvia and Roland's daughter referenced an Alice L Donnelly as her father's
second wife/partner; so far, I haven't found any evidence for a marriage between
Alice and Roland.
I've connected Alice L Donnelly to Alice L Antuar through a death notice for
Alice's brother Walter James, which references all of the children of James and
Charlotte Griffiths, and includes Alice (Mrs Antuar, Victoria).
I also have a death notice and memorial notices for Dudley, in Victoria, which
reference his mother and brothers, Harold and Neville.
I've confirmed Harold's birth in 1919 to Alice and Mark in NSw; Neville's birth
is more problematic, as his military records give a date before Alice and Mark's
marriage in 1914, but there's no variation of Donnelly or Griffiths that matches
in the NSW records.
However, there are further electoral rolls that have Neville James Donnelly
living at the same address that his mother Alice had been living at with Roland
in 1954.
I'm close to finalising this branch of the family - this is really a side
project on my main research - but I was wondering if/how much of this would be
useful for your database.
I gathered from the contact page that you use Legacy software - if you're
connecting to Familysearch.org Alice's ID is K858-V5T. My username there is
Missjayem, you'll be able to track the changes.
I'll split off a branch at your suggestion, and can forward either in Legacy or
Gedcom, whichever is more practical for you.
Kindest regards, Jo Weeding

Joseph Yelds is shown only as a stepfather.

Hi Ian
To be very exact, Joseph Yelds did not raise Emma Jane Humble after her mother's
death, and she did not become a part of the Yelds family, although occasional
contact was maintained. The role of parenting the little girl was
undertaken by Mahalath and Thomas Warburton who raised her; she married their
son William when she was 19 when her stepfather had to give consent to the union
as she was under age.

Description: LATE MR. JOHN NASH
A Friend's Appreciation
A long link with the past has been severed by the death, on Friday last this
residence, "Lomolong," of Mr. John Nash who was a member of one of the most
highly respected and one of the oldest pioneering families of the Hoskinstown
district. His father and mother were natives of County Limerick Ireland, and,
they came to Australia with their son, Michael, who still survives, in the ship
Commodore Perry in the "forties " On arrival in Australia they came to
Hoskinstown district, where the deceased gentle man was born 70 years ago. He
had lived in his native district ever since, where he was engaged in grazing
pursuits up to the time of his death. The deceased gentleman was of such a
kindly and charitable disposition that his friends were legion. Being an
omnivorous reader, he always took a keen interest in the political and economic
conditions off the country and was consequently very entertaining. It is a
coincidence, too, that Mr. Nash succumbed to a heart attack while reading the
paper. Loved, honoured and respected wherever he went, it was not surprising
that the funeral was representative one, and probably the largest ever seen at
Bungendore.
An eloquent panegyric was delivered at St. Mary's Church on Sunday morning by
Rev. Father M. D. O'Sullivan, who also officiated at the grave side, the remains
being interred in the RC portion of the Bungendore cemetery. Two brothers who
predeceased Mr. Nash are buried in Ireland, while the graves of two sisters and
his father and mother are in the Bungendore cemetery. A devoted husband and
father, Mr. Nash leaves behind him to mourn their loss, his widow and eight
children, three sons and five daughters, namely, William, Thomas, Leo, Kathleen
(Mrs. H. Nash), Veronica, Celeis, Rose and Eileen. He is also survived by two
brothers, Michael (Bungendore) and James (Sydney); and a sister, Mrs. John
Larkin (Rossi). The pall-bearers both at the home and graveside were Messrs. D.
J. Golding, F. E. Couch: R. Ahern, H. Golding, T. Flynn, and John Cunningham.
Many beautiful floral tributes were placed on the grave. The district is the
poorer by the death and wide spread sympathy is extended to the sorrowing
relatives.

(By Telegraph.—Special to "Star.") HAMILTON, this day. An inquest was held at
Huntly yesterday before Mr. Farrell, J.P., on the body of Benjamin Buckley, aged
66, who had been found dead in bed. The evidence showed that he left home at
Tahuna on Saturday week to visit an unoccupied farm at Waiterimu, where he
intended staying a week. As he did not return on the week-end one of his sons
went out and found the father dead in bed. Medical evidence showed that heart
failure was the cause of death, and a verdict was returned accordingly.

Hi David,
Thank you for your enquiry.
Yes, there are changes in place in the way we at MP distribute the Newsletter.
These changes have been in place now for a couple of years or so and were
initiated to simplify the process.
What you now receive from me each month is an advisory email which contains an
embedded link to an archive in the MP website which contains all the recent
Newsletters. MP took this action to alleviate the large number of bounced
messages created when recipient's mail systems were close to having their quota
exceeded. Newsletters have tended to grow to a size of several hundred kilobytes
now and easily exceed 1 megabyte if there are any images included.
So, in answer to your question, no, the Newsletter is no longer mailed out in
its entirety, only the link. If you do want a hard/soft copy then you can save
the Newsletter to your PC from the MP website.
The following link will take you directly to the Newsletter archive repository.

MR. JAMES CULLEN A TRAGIC DEATH
(From Our Ganbenang Valley Correspondent)
News of the tragic, death of Mr. James Cullen, of Medlow Bath, was
received here on Wednesday morning with general regret.
Mr. Cullen, Who was a dairyman, had business across the line at an
early hour that morning, and stepped from behind a going train, not noticing, or
thinking of one approaching in the opposite direction. Death occurred almost
immediately.
The late Mr. Cullen had many relatives and friends here, and was a
native of this district, having lived here for many years. Two brothers survive
Michael, of Bowenfels and Patrick, of "Willaroi." A widow and grown-up family of
five boys are left to mourn the loss of a loving husband and father, and to them
the deepest,
sympathy is extended.
Interment was made in the Catholic cemetery, Blackheath, on Thursday. The
cortege was very lengthy.

Northern Star (Lismore, NSW : 1876 - 1954) Thu 19 Jun 1930
Mr. James Cullen died suddenly at his home in Keen-street on Monday, June 9,
aged 72. Deceased spent the prime of his life in the Cobargo district, far South
Coast. In his younger days he was a pedestrian of no mean repute. He also had a
fondness for "the gloves," and he was a formidable opponent when any boxing
happened
along and invited the local lads to have about. Jim Cullen was the soul
of honesty, and was held in high esteem on the far South Coast, and also in
the North Coast, having come to this coast 20 years ago. He engaged in dairying,
and acquired a valuable
property at Edward's Grass, near Lismore. This he eventually sold to live a life
of retirement in Lismore.
He married Miss Maud Ubrehein, of Cobargo, who with his daughter
Vera, survive him. He was the third son of the late Mr. and Mrs. William Cullen,
pioneer selectors of Cobargo, the old homestead being close to the town.
The death of Mr. Jas. Cullen will be regretted by many friends, both in the far
South and North Coast. He received a stroke of paralysis 41 years ago, from
which, however, he recovered
sufficiently to pay a visit to friends and relatives of the south only
last year. Mr. Henry Cullen (Boatharbour). Fred (Cobargo). Jack (Sydney) and
Ned (New Zealand) are brothers; Mesdames D. Wright and F. Thelan (Cobargo), A.

GOULBURN'S OLDEST RESIDENT DEATH AT 102 The oldest resident of the Goulburn
district, Mr. Owen O'Neill, died at Kingsdale at seven o'clock on Monday
evening. He was 102 years of age last January. For 65 years he had been in this
district, and was well known to farmers and graziers in all parts. In 1857 he
left his home in County Cork, Ireland, and came to Australia. He was an
immigrant of that type which Australia stands so badly in need of at the present
time. A lover of the land, he lost no time in securing a suitable selection.
This he obtained at Gurrundah in 1862, but he came to this district immediately
after his arrival in the Colony. His holding was a small mixed farm near
Waterhole Creek. He had also engaged in farming and grazing pursuits in other
portions of the Goulburn district. His wife, who came out from Ireland with him,
predeceased him by about thirty years. For the past thirteen years Mr. O'Neill
had been leading a retired life. He had only been bedridden about twelve months.
He retained his faculties practically up to the last. Even within a few days
before his death he could recall incidents connected with his life.
The deceased gentleman had lately been residing with his eldest daughter, Mrs.
J. J. Taylor, of Kingsdale. It was at her residence that his death took place.
Those who were intimate with the pioneer speak very highly of him. In his
younger days he was a favourite step-dancer. His hornpipes, Jigs, and reels were
greatly admired by residents of the district.
The old gentleman leaves a family of ten children-six daughters and four sons.
The daughters are - Mrs. J. J. Taylor, Kingsdale; Mrs. H. Heffernan, Glen Innes;
Mrs. Joseph Coves, Gurrundah; Mrs. J. Earald, Wagga; Mrs. P. Callanan, Perth,
W.A.; and Mrs. J. Spackman, Gurrundah. The sons are-Messrs. Jeremiah, Temora;
Owen, Gurrundah; Peter, Cootamundra; and Denis, Young. It is interesting to note
that the deceased lived to see a member of his fifth generation. Recently he had
his photograph taken with a representative of each generation. The funeral will
leave Mrs. Taylor's residence at Kingsdale at noon to morrow (Wednesday). The
interment will take place at Breadalbane at three o'clock in the afternoon.

Re: Hayes Family -
Michelago
Good afternoon Ian
I am trying to find information about my great grandmothers family.
The family is William Hayes, father. Catherine, mother.
Their daughter Anastasia was born on 22 October 1850.
Their abode was stated as 'Micalego' and William was a labourer.
There is another William Hayes, a shepherd who was married to Bridget Hall and
they had a daughter named Ellen at 'Micalego'. Ellen was born 2nd Jan
1851.
My grandmother was Violet Vine (Illegitimate) born at Bermagui who was the:
·
Daughter of Anastasia
(Ann Stanich on her birth certificate). She recorded her birth date as
about 1885 and place as Jerilderie on Violets birth certificate
·
Granddaughter of Helen (or
Ellen Hayes) who married Charles Vine in about 1873 in Goulburn.
My problem is that, as you can see the repeat of the names Ellen and Anastasia
is confusing. This
information is from the Baptisms, numbers 399 and 400 in the Parish of
Queanbeyan between 1st and 31st January 1851.
I believe a Vine owned portion 45 between the highway and the murrumbidgee river
at Michelago, but I can not remember the Parish name.
I would be very pleased if you can clarify or have any information about this
family.
Regards, Helen
Hi Helen,
All the information we have is in our database, unfortunately there is little
that will shed any new light on your challenge. Can you please tell me who
Violet married?

Hi Ian
Violet married Peter Joseph Bell of Newcastle NSW on 3 May 1924 at Kurri Kurri
where she had been a State Ward until she was 18. After Peter's death she
married a Scotsman, William Robertson. She died at 52 years.

Mrs. Mary Jane Taylor, an identity of the district, died at 7:30 am. yesterday

Mrs. Taylor married Mr. John Joseph Taylor, and the couple went to Baw Baw,
where Mr. Taylor was engaged for a time in the management of the lime kilns
there. They afterwards took up residence at Kingsdale and here again Mr. Talyor

and frequently rode into Goulburn on horseback, taking her child ren with her.
She remembered Ben Hall and other outlaws, and frequently spoke of their
exploits. Mrs. Taylor had resided at Kingsdale for about 20 years. She was
interested in most branches of sport and in her day was a noted step dancer.
She was also an ardent supporter of the Labour movement. Her husband predeceased

Description: The Late Mrs. John Reardon, Junee.
The death occurred on Saturday morning week, after a long illness, at the age of
80 years, of Mrs. John Reardon, resident for almost a lifetime of this
community. She had been ailing for some considerable time, and bore her
sufferings, which were at times very great, with that Christian fortitude which
was characteristic of her. Deceased had lived in Junee over 60 years. She was a
young woman teaching at Wheeo, and after her marriage went to Junee when there
were but two buildings in the place; this was sixty years ago. Mrs. Bartlett and
Mrs. Mosley (Sydney) are sisters; Miss Tilly McAlier is a niece; Mr. D. McGarvey
(Junee), Mr. E. Mosley (Croyden), Mr. C. Mosley (Goulburn) are nephews; Mr. J.
J. Worthington (Cootamundra) was married to a sister of the late Mr. John
Reardon. The Worthington boys of Junee, Illabo, and Bethungra, are nephews. The
funeral was largely attended by people from all round the district; the Right
Rev. Monsignor O'Connell read the prayers at the graveside, and Messrs. Black
and Pickles attended to the mortuary arrangements.
In the early days, at Bangalow deceased married Mr. John Reardon, and the pair
came to Junee and settled on their wellknown property, 'Rosslyn,' where they
lived for many years, and those years will have pleasant recollections for many
people of this community; the most lavish hospitality was always extended to a
large circle of friends at the home. In the winter of their life, just fifteen
years ago, they sold out the Rosslyn property, and went to live in Junee, in the
house occupied by Mrs. Reardon at the time of her death; it was here also that
her husband predeceased her six years ago. As a woman, the late lamented lady
possessed a nature which was of the finest gold, benignant to a degree, easily
approached, and ever ready to befriend an acquaintance; she radiated ease and
composure amongst those with whom she came in contact; her wonderful smile was
infectious, and all felt that in Mrs. Reardon there was one whom they could
implicitly trust; enemies she had none, and she bore no grudges; she just lived
the fine Christian life which seemed to be part of her very being. Her adopted
daughter, Mrs. Alex Reid, nursed her through long years of illness, and at times
almost total blindness.

Hi Alison,
Thank you for your email.
Other than researching from the list of books shown on the Monaro
Pioneers website,
http://www.monaropioneers.com/books.htm#100%20YEARS
then my suggestion would be to post your email on the Monaro Pioneers
Facebook website and see what suggestions our readers put forward.
Hi Bruce,
Could you post Alison's email onto the MP Facebook page.
Thanks, David
Hi

Alison, I have provided our Facebook page members your email address should they
have any suggestions.
