Subject: Notes - Ada Bessie Ryall (1883-1970)

Hi Ian,

Below are notes on Ada Bessie Ryall.

Ada Bessie better known as ‘Bessie’ was the 7th child of Cooma grazier Alfred Ryall and wife Mary Jane Hain. In 1904 she married Charles Feilen in Cooma. After the wedding they set off to the goldfields in the Greymouth region of the South Island of New Zealand where Charles commenced work on a gold mining dredge.

Their first child, Olive, was born in December 1904. It appears that Bessie was not happy in cold and very wet south western New Zealand. Bessie and Olive left NZ for Cooma in late 1905 and Charles followed about 6 months later.

Until the Dry Farm homestead was built in 1909 they stayed at Greendale. Another 6 children were born in Cooma.

In 1916 Bessie lost her younger brother, Arthur, who at the time had enlisted in the Australian Army for service during WW1. He was undergoing training at Goulburn when he contracted measles which later developed into pneumonia.

Bessie was a great seamstress and knitting was her favoured past time. She also maintained a large vegetable and flower garden.

In 1929 the Feilens moved to Bidgee and a few years later retired at Wyoming (now Hatsell). When Charles died in !965, Bessie moved into Cooma and lived there until her death in 1970.

Subject: Should “Hutchinson Street” in Nimmitabel really be “Hutchison Street”?

James Hutchison (1834–1884) and his family are recognised in Nimmitabel as a pioneering family of the local area (Monaro Pioneers Database Reference Number MP84160).

So why is there a street in Nimmitabel (on the Northern edge of the town not far from the Pioneer Cemetery) called “Hutchinson Street” rather than “Hutchison Street”?

Is this a spelling mistake by the local council or was there another notable family in the local area called “Hutchinson”?

Please see the attached document for more details.

This matter came to our attention when we recently visited Nimmitabel cemetery and the Pioneer Cemetery.

Do readers of the Monaro Pioneers newsletter know anything about this - or would support our interest in correcting an error, if that is what it is?

Is this a spelling mistake by the local council or was there another notable family in the local area called “Hutchinson”?

The Nimmitabel Pioneer Cemetery (on N Boyd Street/ Tom Groggin Road) contains two Hutchison family headstones recording the deaths of four members of that pioneering family, as follows.

James HUTCHISON

Died 7 September 1884, aged 50 years.

Also his wife Jane. Died 3 August 1903, aged 61 years.

Erected by their children.

Colin HUTCHISON

Died 9 September 1893, aged 22 years.

Also Janet Mary Hutchison. Died 7 September 1875, aged 1 year.

Source: Photographs and information by Michelle Edwards, as presented on the Monaro Pioneers website. http://www.monaropioneers.com/nimmitabel/memorials/cemetery.htm

Note: As a separate matter, it is that case that at the entrance to the Pioneer Cemetery  there is a more recent commemorative plaque, dating from 1988, listing all of the pioneer graves. Unfortunately, the surname “Hutchison” which is clearly written on each headstone has been transcribed incorrectly and engraved as “Hutchinson” on the 1988 plaque.

The Monaro Pioneers database (http://www.monaropioneers.com/index.html ) contains over 393,000 names being “all the currently identified individuals and families from the Eden/Monaro region and surrounding areas as well”.

A search of the Monaro Pioneers database reveals the following in relation to the number of people who were born, died or buried in Nimmitabel with these two surnames:

Surname

Hutchison

Hutchinson

Born in Nimmitabel

13

0

Died in Nimmitabel

8

0

Buried in Nimmitabel

10

0

So, the surname “Hutchison” is well represented whereas the surname “Hutchinson” is not.

The World War I Honour Board for volunteers who enlisted from the Nimmitabel area includes a volunteer “C. Hutchison” but no-one with the surname “Hutchinson”.

The last member of the original pioneering Hutchison family to reside in Nimmitabel was Norman Hutchison who died in 1971. He was the youngest son of James Hutchison (1831-1884) and his wife Jane (née Patterson).  The following is a copy of notes presented on the Monaro Pioneers website about the funeral of Mr Norman Hutchison, taken from the Express, Tuesday, August 17 1971:

Funeral of Mr Norman Hutchison

A funeral service was held at Nimmitabel Presbyterian Church on Friday afternoon for Mr Norman Hutchison who died last week aged 91.

Mr Hutchison of "Whylonga", Nimmitabel was a bachelor.

He was well known and respected among the residents of Nimmitabel where he lived all his life. A grazier in later years Mr Hutchison worked much of his life in the sawmilling industry. His parents were among the earliest settlers in the district and his father is credited with establishing the first sawmill in the Nimmitabel district. Mr Hutchison was a life member of the Cooma chapter of the Masonic Lodge and prayers were said at the lodge for him on Thursday night.

Mr Hutchison was buried at Nimmitabel Cemetery on Friday.

(Reference:  http://www.monaropioneers.com/nimmitabel/pioneers/hutchison-j.htm  )

It is a common mistake to spell “Hutchison” incorrectly, nevertheless, we seek to ensure that the name is spelt correctly for commemorative purposes.

Unless there is some valid explanation, other than a spelling mistake, we would like to recommend to the Snowy Monaro Regional Council that the name of “Hutchinson Street” in Nimmitabel be re-named as “Hutchison Street” to appropriately honour James Hutchison (1834-1884) and his pioneering family.

J.D & A. Hutchison, Canberra

J.D. Hutchison is a direct descendant of John Hutchison (1831-1888), older brother of James Hutchison (1834-1884) of Nimmitabel.

Subject: BRADLEY/DUGGAN

Hi Ian -

I was wondering if any of your readers can help to find any information on these families  - RICHARD DUGGAN BRADLEY was born in Tasmania in 1857, his parents were MICHAEL JOSEPH and ANNIE, as stated on his death certificate,  We don’t know if Michael Joseph and Annie were from Ireland or UK and whether they were convicts or free settlers, given the year of Richard’s birth more likely convicts. Richard came to Cooma, don’t know when,  and married JANE COLQUHOUN in 1879 at the Presbyterian Church in Cooma.  Richard  was a prominent figure in the town being involved with children’s charities and on various committees.  He and Jane had 4 children, Margaret Ann Duggan, Ethel Jane, Violet and Richard.  ANNIE (Richard Duggan’s mother) we know nothing about except we think she may have been a DUGGAN as that name appears in Richard’s name and also his first daughter born, which looks like a family name being carried on.  My father-in-law (also a Richard as well as my husband)  often spoke of cousins with the surname of DUGGAN that lived in Cooma.  I have contacted Births  Dept in Tasmania but there does not appear to be a registration for Richard Duggan, which was quite common back then I’m told.

We would love to know if there are other brothers or sisters or cousins for RICHARD DUGGAN BRADLEY.  His background is non-existent for us and quite frustrating.  So if anyone has any information on either  BRADLEY or DUGGAN  families we would welcome it.

Thanks Ian for a wonderful newsletter, so much information, well done.

Subject: Revised notes - Jacob Feilen (1878-1950)

Hi  Ian,

Below are revised notes on Jacob Feilen.

Jacob, like his brother John Albert, had a keen interest in agriculture, horticulture, irrigation and livestock. Unlike John, Jacob had formal training at Hawkesbury Agricultural College. Initially he worked as an overseer on a sheep station at Cobar.

In 1905 Jacob moved to Lismore where he switched from sheep to dairy farming. The farm was named Belvidere and it employed a number of workers. In 1911 the Belvidere manager moved out and Jacob was promoted manager and moved into the large homestead.

It was obvious that Jacob was not keen on managing a dairy farm and within 12 months he had moved back to Cooma to manage Harlowe which was a sheep station west of Dry Farm.

Within 2 years of brother John’s move to manage Dromore in 1914, Jacob was engaged by his brother as an irrigation engineer to setup and run a charcoal gas powered pumping system on the extensive Murrumbidgee river flats of Dromore. Hundreds of acres of lucerne were under irrigation. The irrigation came to a sudden halt in 1934 when the NSW Government revoked the pumping licence.

After 1934 Jacob continued on as an overseer, supervising stock and station tasks until his death from cancer in 1950.  He was an active member of the Cooma P. & A. Association and was often engaged as a judge at various district Shows.

Subject: Revised Notes - John Albert Feilen (1876-1966)

Hi Ian,

Below are revised notes on John Albert Feilen. The previous notes were prepared as a family history update.

John Albert Feilen showed above average physical and mental skills. He lacked formal education from the age of 12. He turned his hand to station work and kept abreast of the industrial developments that had a place in agriculture. Shearing and irrigation machines were in their infancy. John mastered these developments.

In the early 1900’s John was appointed as manager of Magellan Station on the Numeralla Road east of Cooma. His next appointment was manager of Dromore Station which was a huge property owned by the New Zealand and Australian Land Company on the junction of the Murrumbidgee and Numeralla Rivers. He held that position from May 1914 until 1926. He substantially improved wool production by introducing large scale irrigation on the Dromore Murrumbidgee River flats and eradicating rabbits.

He and Gertrude Mawson married in 1903. They had no children and the couple separated in 1926. This created acrimony with other family members. In order to avoid family conflict he left Dromore and became a sales representative for a leading agricultural importer and distributor, Dangar Gedye and Malloch. He was Moree based, specialising in water pumps and overhead gear for shearing sheds.

John was a top sportsman in rifle shooting, cricket, golf and clay pigeon shooting both in Cooma and Moree. In 1906 and probably beyond, John was captain of the Cooma cricket team.

Subject: John Feilen 1835-1921

Hi Ian,

Below are the updated notes on John Feilen.

He arrived in Melbourne on the Clipper Ship Crystal Palace on 14 October 1855

John and his older brother, Jacob, left Germany in 1852 bound for the US and I believe that their destination was New York. On 26 June 1855 they boarded clipper sailing ship Crystal Palace bound for Melbourne arriving on 14 October 1855. No record has been found concerning the brothers departure from Germany or their arrival in the US. In the 1850’s large numbers of Germans emigrated to the US to escape poor economic and/or conscription. Their ports of departure were mainly Hamburg, Bremerhaven and Le Harve (France). Their destinations were usually New York, Boston or Baltimore. On the passenger list of the Crystal Palace the Feilens were listed as “Fylien”.

On 3 October 1856 the Mount Alexander newspaper mentioned that there was uncollected mail for Jacob Feilen at the Castlemaine (Vic) post office. There was no more discovered documentation for several years. Unfortunately, most goldminer records of the era have been destroyed.

Credible family oral history records state that the Feilen brothers were in Kiandra for the goldrush in the early 1860’s. Adding strength to this statement is a NSW Government Gazette of 1862 which stated that there was an unclaimed letter addressed to Jacob Feilen at Lambing Flat (Young). Many miners from Kiandra headed for Lambing Flat when Kiandra alluvial gold was exhausted. It is not known whether John went to Lambing Flat or remained in the Monaro living at Rhine Falls. The earliest record of him at Rhine Falls was in 1869 when he was involved in a court case where it was alleged his sheep were found grazing on another settler’s land.

In 1871 John married Mary Schlick who was the Australian born daughter of Nimmo sawmill owner August Schlick. There is no record of attendance of brother Jacob. His whereabouts at that time was unknown and he may have been gold prospecting in New Zealand. Late in 1871 son Peter was born at Rhine Falls. Two years later Augustus (Gus) was born. By this time John and family were on their selection which they named “Greendale”.

A search through “Trove” indicated that John was a leading Cooma resident. he was involved in a number of committees and organizations such as:

Cooma Police where he was a JP and assisted the police magistrate with some trials;

Chairman of Stock Trucking;

Chairman of Cooma Progress Committee;

Railway League;

Free Settler Committee;

Chairman Ploughing Association;

Chairman Cooma Pastoral & Agricultural Association;

Temperance Society;

Chairman Monaro Co-Op Flour Mill Company;

Cooma Patriotic Movement.

In addition he wrote papers on improved agricultural practices.

Besides Gus five other children were born at Greendale. First born, Peter, died from epilepsy at Greendale aged 19.

In 1914 John inherited the Cooma house of August Schlick which he promptly sold. He also sold Greendale much to the consternation of his wife and family who were not consulted before the sale.

Prior to leaving Cooma, John was awarded an ‘illuminated address’ by the Cooma show committee for his work with the Show Society. John, Mary and their two daughters then moved to Ermington where he retired to a small property of 9 acres overlooking the Parramatta River.

From 1916 John’s health deteriorated and he died in 1921. He was buried at Carlingford in a now closed cemetery.

Ian, that was fairly long winded, the remainder will be much shorter.

Ian,

Gus, as he was known was the first of 6 children born at “Greendale”. On leaving school he became an agricultural worker and later a woolclasser. From postcards still in family possession, Gus travelled extensively throughout NSW. He seemed to be particularly keen about Mudgee with numerous cards posted from there in the early 1900’s.

He never married and in later life became a semi-recluse living in wool sheds and farm outbuildings. From the photographic record he appeared in a number of photos taken at “Carinya”, his father’s hobby farm at Ermington. After John Feilen died in 1921 he was known to spend considerable time at his mother’s house at Wingello.

From oral history we believe that Gus amassed a large sum of money from his woolclassing and other agricultural pursuits. We also believe that his so called mates at Wingello managed to part him from his hard earned cash.

In 1950, at the time of brother Jacob’s funeral he was reported as living at Wingello. He was known to periodically live in a derelict hut in the area. He was later admitted to an old mens home in Liverpool.

Hi Ian,

I haven’t responded to the email I have copied below but have a question for the author or anyone connected with this family.

If Sally Gundary is believed the mother of Margaret Chapman (Born 1831) and Sally is listed in most records as born in 1826 then the birth date for Sally Gundary if correct means she couldn’t be the mother.  If the birth date listed (1826) is incorrect she could be either the mother or not the mother.  I have noticed a date of 1816 is some places but that would make here a very young mother if in fact she was.

How can I respond to emails on your great site like the linkages on some genealogy sites.

Hello Ian,

Still researching my family.   Earlier in the year we visited Braidwood.  Unfortunately, the family history room wasn’t open but we did go out to Mongarlowe Cemetery where great grandfather Frederick is in an unmarked grave.   I wonder about the life of a man apparently born in Germany ending up at such a hidden place.   Obviously, he didn’t find a lot of gold.

Would like to suggest that Margaret Bryant ( daughter of William Bryant and Margaret Chapman) also be added to the list of Hartmires as she did marry my great grandfather Frederick ,19 June 1871.  I cannot find any reference to Margaret Hartmire  after 1897 and it is her death I am still seeking.  Also, I am still unable to find any reference to her youngest son, Alfred Charles Hartmire after 1901 Census where he is still shown as being in Mongarlowe.

Re: my great great grandmother  Margaret Bryant ( nee Chapman),  the following information comes a copy of  her death certificate:

died at Buddawang 17 March 1888, aged 57 years

cause of death was asthma

father was Chapman, occupation stockman; mother unknown

One source has her mother as Sally Gundary.  This would make her a half cast aboriginal and the sister of the Henry Richard Chapman listed in your index.  According to AIATSIS it was practice to not list aboriginal mothers on birth certificates for fear of having the child removed.  This may account for the listed “unknown”.   Are you able to provide any information that may clarify this issue?

I think I have exhausted my avenues for this side of the family and it is probably time to start on my mother’s side.   That should be a little straight forward.

Regards,  Olga Green

Hi Greg,

Unfortunately we don't have any contact details for Olga anymore.  We may be able to supply contact information for any emails in more recent newsletters though should you wish to follow up any comments.  We don't have any birth date listed for Sally in our database.

Hi Ian,

Thanks for the reply….

I have joined the Newsletter list now so just need to work out how to post emails, respond if possible to emails, advise of questionable entries of interest to my research etc; e.g. my points in the earlier email I sent yesterday.

I let you know a while ago about some of the family history detail posted which I knew to be incorrect essentially because I had the primary source documents, knew one or two of the older people who were listed (since passed on many years ago) and have a personal interest.

Kind regards,  Greg Fromyhr

Johns original trade was "flax breaking" which is the primary stage of developing a flax thread by beating it with hinged rods. At some stage an early family researcher transcribed an early record and had him described as a horse breaker and this has stuck and is recorded in his biography on this website. John's convict records have him as a flax breaker or flax swingler. For confirmation you can see his Conditional Pardon on your website.

BERRY/MYERS

Subject: Elizabeth Berry wife of David Myers

From: Colleen (Levett)

Hi David,

It has been some time since I made contact.

I noticed on the individual page for Elizabeth Berry born 1807 Flockton Kirkheaton Yorkshire that she has been given an additional Christian name of Ann.

I have never come across her as having this other name, she has always been either Elizabeth or Betty, no mention of Ann.

I would be interested to know where this extra information came from.

Elizabeth died in 1881. I could never find a record of same but tracked down a copy of the Cooma newspaper which was held in a repository in Melbourne and I was sent a copy of the page where her death was announced. Elizabeth and David plus other family members are buried on a hilltop on the property known as "One Tree Hill' near Nimmitabel, and last I know was owned by Haylock's.

Keep up the good works.

Take care,  Colleen (Levett)

Thank you Colleen,

I will amend the database accordingly.

COPPARD

From: Marie Warren
Sent: Sunday, 5 February 2017 1:52 PM
Subject: Re: Your genealogy user account has been activated.

Hello Ian

My name is Marie Warren and my husband Graeme is a great grandson of James Coppard - Ref No MP159632; Person Id I159632; Family Id F46520.

I can't believe I have found James Coppard referenced on the Monaro Pioneers site. I have been doing the Warren/Coppard family history for a number of years and am currently writing the Warren Coppard story.  I have been following up the NSW Government Gazettes with the Occupational Licenses that James Coppard had on Trove plus trying to identify the land plots on the historical maps on the NSW Lands Department website.

I have tracked his licenses and leases through the Parishes of Wambrook, Lake and Coolringdon but it is very difficult to put something like "143A Wambrook and Island Lake" onto the historical maps and work out just exactly where one is talking about. So to my question - do you have an actual list that matches the license/lease identifiers on an actual map? I note he had "143 Wambrook & Island Lake" up until 1909 and I am guessing that this might have been resumed for the Burrinjuck catchment area.

My knowledge of the Monaro area is very limited. Are there any publications/websites that talk about the land settlements of this area where I might gain further information? I am attaching a spreadsheet that I am continually adding to as I work my way through Trove. In addition I am quite willing to supply family information should that be of interest to you and the Monaro Pioneers group.  James Coppard lived in Randwick in Sydney and in addition to his holdings around Cooma he also had a holding outside Merriwa. His son James Clarence managed that property called "Ivanhoe" for a number of years until James got rid of the property in 1920.

Graeme and I are actually coming down to Canberra in March to visit our daughter so it would be great to know where the Monaro Pioneers group is based. As a member of the Sunshine Coast Genealogical Society based at Nambour on the Sunshine Coast in Queensland I do understand the importance of recording history and I thoroughly enjoy meeting others with similar interests.

Anyway I won't bore you with any more family history. I look forward to hearing from you in relation to this matter.

Kind regards,  Marie Warren

Hi Marie,

The Monaro Pioneers Project is an internet based group with no physical home base.  There 6 active members of the team based in Sydney, Canberra and Queanbeyan.

I suggest you make contact with the Cooma Historical Society based in the Cooma Library or HAGSOC in Canberra to seek the answers to the questions you ask.

Description: From 'The Queanbeyan Age', 26 September 1924:

Awfully Sudden Death - On Wednesday Mr Coroner Gale and Dr Blackall (Government Medical Officer) proceeded to Blytheburn, Booroomba, to investigate into the cause of the death, on the previous evening, of Mary Ellen Kershaw, wife of Arthur Albert Kershaw, station hand, employed on the Booroomba estate.  The result of the inquiry was that on the previous evening, between seven and eight o'clock, deceased was in an outhouse a short distance from the living house dressing her little daughter's foot which had been badly cut.  Before the operation was completed, the deceased, according to the little girl's statement, gave four heavy breaths and then fell sideways off her seat and lay motionless.  The little daughter ran at once to the house for her father, who, on seeing the prostrate woman, realised at once that she was dead.  He proceeded to Booroomba, over a mile distant, with all speed, and reported his wife's death.  Mr Dulhunty, the station manager, promptly reported the matter to t  he Queanbeyan police by telephone.  The Coroner was apprised of the matter, and being informed that no medical man had for some years attended the woman, at once decided to hold an inquest.  To ascertain the cause of death a post-mortem examination was necessary, and this being made the doctor's evidence was that in making his autopsy he found the brain normal, but the heart was in a condition of intense fatty degeneration, and to this he attributed the sudden death by the failure of the heart's action.  Deceased was an abnormally fat woman, had been twice married, her first husband being Henry Ware of Colinton, by whom she had two children, and two others by her second husband.  She was 49 years of age last February.  The coroner returned a verdict in accordance with the medical testimony.  The sympathy of the community is extended to the bereaved family.  The funeral of deceased took place yesterday morning, the remains being interred in the Roman Catholic cemetery, Rev P M Haydon officiating at the graveside.  The funeral arrangements were entrusted to Mr H Lazarus.

Description: OBITUARY I MRS. JOHN McINNES. The death of Mrs. John McInnes, which occurred early on Saturday morning last, removes from our midst another of the now much diminished number of early pioneers of this district. Born 84 years ago, at Canberra, deceased was a daughter of the late Mr. Andrew Horrocks, who was one of our early townmen and conducted a blacksmithing business in Atkinson Street in the early 50's. In 1860 the deceased lady married Mr. John McInnes, and later established their home at Kowen. Here her neighbourly characteristics and open-handed hospitality won for her general esteem and high regard throughout the district. Her husband predeceased her in 1901. Fifteen children were the issue of the marriage and eleven of these survive. In addition her household was added to by the adoption of six other children, three nephews and two neices as well as the son of a neighbour at Bywong, who were the victims of unfortuitous circumstances, the mothers of three of the ch  ildren being drowned.

Throughout her long life, which was an active one to the last, she faithfully discharged the obligations she had laid upon her, so that for her goodness there will remain with her relatives a lasting memory, as well as with a wide circle of the friends who knew and loved her too. The death of Mrs. McInnes was no doubt hastened by her recent experi-ences through the flood, for upon coming to live in Queanbeyan she took up her residence on the river flat below the weir. When her son's house was swept away she lost practically all her possessions. After-wards she went to Sydney to stay with her married children there, but she apparently missed the old associations of the district and returned only a fortnight ago, being then apparently in her usual good health. Three days later she took to her bed and passed quietly away last Saturday morning.

The eleven surviving children are Gilbert, George, and Robert (Quean-beyan), William, Andrew and Charles (Belmore, Sydney), Mrs. Walter McIntosh (Majura), Mrs. Synott (Wa-verley), Mrs. Edmonds (Goolygong), Mrs. A. R.

Rowley and Mrs. E. Sherd (Queanbeyan). There are 55 grand-children and 24 great-grandchildren.

Deceased was a staunch member of St. Stephen's Presbyterian Church, and the Rev. A. J. Carter officiated at the grave when the interment was made in the Presbyterian portion of the Old General Cemetery on Sunday afternoon. The funeral was very largely attended. Members of the M.U. Happy Home Lodge, of which her sons are members, acted as pall-bearers. Our heartfelt sympathy and that of the whole community is extended to the bereaved relatives. The funeral arrangements were carried out by Mr. H. Lazarus.

Description: OBITUARY.

MR. JOHN McINNES.

The death occurred on Saturday morn ing last of Mr. John McInnes, hairdresser and tobacconist, of Monaro-street,Quean beyan. The sad event took place at his residence after a few days' acute suffering. For some time past the deceased, who was in his 44(46)th year, had been a subject of Bright's disease of the kidneys, but there were other complications which hastened his end. He was married, and leaves a widow and one child.

The announcement of his death created a considerable amount of surprise, as until within a few days of the end he was up and about, attending to his ordinary business avocations. The funeral took place on Sunday afternoon, the cortege, from his late residence to the grave, being one of the largest witnessed for some time past. It was composed, to a large extent, of mourning relatives, the McInnes family being a very old and numerous one in the town and district. The deceased was one of the many children of the late Mr. John McInnes of Kowen, near Queanbeyan, and his aged mother is amongst his surviving relatives. Besides the relatives and the general mourners, the M.U. Oddfellows (of which order he was a member), the G.U. Oddfellows, and the local branch of the A.H.C.Guild, took a prominent part in the funeral obsequies. Being a Presbyterian, the re mains were interred in the section of the general cemetery pertaining to that de nomination, and in the burial lot where, lie the remain  s of many of the McInnes family who had predeceased him. Mr. A. R. McVittie, M.A., officiated at the grave; the burial service of the Oddfel lows was conducted by Past Grand Wilden. There were many wreaths and floral tributes, one of the most beautiful being sent by his brother aldermen, the deceased having been a member of the local Municipal Council.

Description: OBITUARY MR. T. McAULIFFE.

Death has removed still another of our old and respected district pioneers, this time in the person of Mr. Thomas McAuliffe, sen., the well known grazier of " Elmside," Jeir, where deceased had resided up to the time of his death, which sad event occurred at 2.30 a.m. on Saturday last.

The deceased, who had for many years acted in the capacity of postmaster at Jeir, was a native of Parramatta district, but in his youth came to live at Jeir, where he married Miss O'Sullivan, then not long out from the old country. Some years ago Mr. McAuliffe met with an accident which necessitated a long stay in the Yass Hospital, and not long after resultant troubles intervened, ultimately causing his death at the age of 79 years.

Deceased was an enthusiastic supporter of all branches of sport and also took a keen interest in political matters. He leaves a widow and family of five. Messrs. Thomas, Desmond, and Jack McAuliffe (the latter of the Defence Department, Sydney) are sons, and Misses Zita and Mary McAuliffe, daughters.

All with the exception of Jack, reside at "Elmside."

Two sisters also survive---Mrs. Callaghan (North Yass) and Mrs. Sparrow (Bungendore). The late Mr. McAuliffe was widely esteemed and respected. The body was brought to St. Augustine's Church, Yass, where on Sunday a Mass was said. There was a very large attendance at the funeral on Sunday afternoon.

The service at the grave was conducted by the Rev. Father Leonard. Mr.

McIntosh was the undertaker. Very general sympathy is felt for the bereaved family and relatives.---" Yass Courier."
