Subject: Sheep farming in the 1800's

Hello David,

I am writing a play about sheep shearers and breeders during the mid 1800’s and wonder if you could help me with some facts.  What would be the asking price of a good quality Lincoln ram during those times, and how much per pound could the farmer expect for the sale of wool and meat when that ram was crossed with Merino stock?

If I am asking the wrong person, I apologise and wonder if you could suggest where I can find this information.  I have trawled the internet for days and find so much relevant information, except those figures.

Many thanks for your time,

Sue Sewell.

Hello,

I am wondering if any Newsletter readers have any knowledge of NOONAN'S GAP?

This location is referred to in a newspaper report re a murder in 1848, it is reported as so many miles out of Goulburn.

It does not show up on any old maps and Goulburn Library have no knowledge of it, so it remains a mystery.

If any reader has anything to offer, our family researchers would be very grateful of any help.

As we are reminded 'we are here to help each other' – keep up the wonderful work MP Team.

Regards,  Lesley E (Qld)

Hi Lesley,

I also have not heard of it but our newsletter readers may know.  I suggest you also put your request on our Facebook Page.

Dear David,

Would I be able to ask an open  question about the Schuback Family stories?  I am attempting to find out how Johanna Jess, born Sydney 1845 came to live in the Monaro district without her parents.  She came with her brother Timothy James, (1843), Julia Maud, (1847) and Eliza (1837) from Sydney where their parents disappear from records in 1860 having been in Darlinghurst Gaol charged with Drunkeness, Disorderly Behaviour all through the 1850's.  I am hoping that Johanna may have told one of her numerous children about her early life in Sydney.

Hi Ian,

Below are notes Bertha Bessie (Jo) Feilen. Before I start I would like to point out that husband John Box died in Campbelltown, South Australia and not NSW.

Bertha was nicknamed Jo and adopted that name for the rest of her life. She could not accept her birth name of Bertha Bessie. Jo was the seventh and last child of Charles and Bessie Feilen. Her early childhood was spent at “Dry Farm” and “Bidgee”. At both locations she had to walk to Cooma schools. In 1934 the Feilens moved to “Wyoming” which was about one km closer to town. Jo gained her Leaving Certificate at Cooma High in 1939 and was accepted for teacher training at Sydney Teachers College.

Jo’s first teaching appointment was at Bega followed by a move to Eden. At  Eden Jo met John Box who was on active service with the RAN. They married at Bega in 1944 and post war they initially lived in Cooma. They later moved to Adelaide. In 1954 Jo went back to teaching and retired in 1983.

Hi Ian,

Short notes for Gwen Feilen.

There was no home schooling for Gwen which meant that from an early age Gwen had to walk to Cooma Primary School from Dry Farm. In 1929 the Feilen family moved from “Dry Farm” to “Bidgee” which was situated near the Cooma water pumping station. She still had to walk to school.

At the outbreak of war her husband, Albie, joined the AIF at the age of 40. Initially Gwen remained in Cooma then left with 3 children and joined her husband who was in training at Bribie Island. Later she returned to Cooma and Albie followed in 1946.

Gwen worked in Permewans Store in Sharp Street, Cooma from 1955-67. Shortly after, Gwen and Albie left Cooma to retire in Bermagui. After Albie died in 1976 Gwen remained at Bermagui for another 2 years then moved to Alstonville where her daughter was residing. Later, her sister Olive also moved to Alstonville and bought a house near Gwen’s home.

When her health deteriorated in 1997, Gwen moved to an aged care hostel in Warialda.

Hi Ian & David,

I have some more family stuff for you.

There’s a fair bit, so I have put it in a word document (attached) instead of the email text.

It is based on the descendants of Alexander Galloway (ID I150067) & Janet Corstorphine (ID I150068) (as well as Alexander’s first wife, Margaret Martin and their children).

The attached follows my ancestral line from Alexander (and their siblings and spouses, but does not expand on them too much, or their families). I have included BDM references where I have them, mostly NSW, but includes some from QLD, and also a few from the UK.

As I said, there is a lot of info, including some info on Alexander & Janet’s immigration, and a lot of (text) newspaper articles, so I will leave it up to you what you want to include on the site.

Regards,   Scott.

Hi Ian,

I found another Feilen with no notes.

George grew up in the family home at Dromore station. Primary schooling was initially at Cooma primary and later at the small bush school at Chakola. A daily 9 km horseback ride was required for George to attend school. Secondary education was at Lidcombe and Parramatta.

On leaving school George attended an aeronautical engineering school. His employment was with Ansett and Austral Drop Forge Company.

George attempted to enlist with the Australian Army during WW2. As draftsman were crucial to the defence industry his application was rejected. He spent the war years working on aircraft drawings especially the Beaufort Bomber.

George had great mechanical ability and worked for a number of corporations postwar. His last employment was a contract draftsman at Shell oil refinery.

In the 1990’s he developed an interest in family history. With the assistance of cousin Nancy Smith nee Mould they traced the Feilens and Schlicks back to Germany and started compiling family trees. Unfortunately both George and Nancy suffered from illness and were unable to continue their research. This research was taken over and completed by other family members.

Subject: Notes - Harry Evans (Boyd) Mould

Hi Ian,

This is the last of the Mould notes.

Harry was the lone male with 4 sisters. Harry was nicknamed ‘Boy’ which progressed to Boyd. He was brought up on the family property of ‘Glenrowan’ and was about 6 years old when his father, Reg, enlisted in the AIF for WW2.

His early schooling was at ‘Townsend’ near Hilltop. Secondary education was at Hurlstone Agricultural High School. This was followed by National Service training when he was 18.

From the age of four he was involved with droving and caring for sheep on his fathers snow lease in the Snowy Mountains where he spent most of his summer holidays.

After his marriage in 1958 he bought grazing property ‘Longfield’ situated near Dalgety. Unfortunately for him the wool market slumped which caused him financial hardship for years. Another problem arose with the establishment of Kosciuszko National Park in 1967 which resulted in the cancellation of all grazing leases.

Boyd was very active in the Dalgety community. He was associated with the Show Committee, P and C, and the Agricultural Bureau. He was also involved as a tour guide and presenter at Dalgety Ag Barn.

He was a noted bush poet and produced a book and audio tape titled “Recollections of the Snowy River Stockman”. He also featured in a number of Snow River documentaries and Brad Collis book titled “Snowy – The Making of Modern Australia”.

In 1975 he bought the Dalgety Hotel and in 1998 he retired in the Bega area.

Subject: Notes - Reginald George Mould (1900 - 1972)

Hi Ian,

Below are notes on Reginald Mould.

At about the time of his marriage in 1928, Reg purchased a grazing property situated halfway between Berridale and Jindabyne. He named the property ‘Glenrowan’. He pasture improved Glenrowan and won many trophies for his production of fine Marino wool. Reg also owned a grazing lease in the Snowy Mountains.

When war broke out in 1939, Reg at the age of 39 enlisted with the AIF leaving  wife Marjorie to manage the property. She had four young children which increased to six during the height of the Pacific War when Marjorie took in sister Olive’s two younger boys.

On completion of training, Reg joined the 9th Division/17th Battalion and set sail on the Queen Mary from Sydney and was to see active service in the Middle East and New Guinea. One of the celebrated Rats of Tobruk (1941-42), Reg was injured in the El Alamein campaign on 23/10/42. On recovery he saw service in New Guinea in a support role.

Discharged in 1945, Reg resumed management of Glenrowan. His sheep flock had to be reduced in the mid 1960’s when grazing leases were cancelled with the promulgation

of Kosciuszko National Park.

Following his death in 1972 Glenrowan was sold.

Proposed Change: Daniel,  Thomas (I121276)

Description: FATAL ACCIDENT.--Dr. Morton, coroner, held an-inquest at Carwoola, on the 24st instant, upon view of the body of Thomas Daniel, junior, then and there lying dead. The deceased was a farmer, residing at Forbes's Creek, and was about 35 (42) years old. The only external injuries on the body were a contusion and swelling on the left side of the head. The following particulars elicited at the inquiry explain the sad circumstances under which another falls a victim to the bottle, and a wife with half-a-dozen children and a near prospect of one more is bereaved of the husband of her youth. Adam Muller, a shoemaker residing at Molonglo, stated that on the previous Friday he was in company with deceased, William Follett,'Nathan Wisby, and William Winter. They were going home from Queanbeyan, and when about eight miles on the road deceased dismounted, but his companions went on for a short distance, when the deceased having remounted his horse passed them at full gallop calling on witness to come on. Witness called on him to stop, but he still went on. Immediately afterwards the horse went into a bog, and deceased was thrown out of the saddle, but hung to the stirrup on one side for a very short distance. Witness immediately dismounted and went to him and said, "Tom, what is the matter?" He made no reply, being apparently insensible. The others were still farther ahead, and witness left deceased and rode on to bring them back. He was ten minutes away, but Daniel was alive when they returned. Witness assisted to put him on his horse and then left the party to go to his home. Next morning, having heard he was dead, he came and, saw him lying dead on the road, near where he left him the evening before. William Follett, Nathan Wisby, and Christopher Radcliffe, were with deceased. The deceased was the 'worse ot drink when he left Queanbeyan. He got no injury whatever, except what he received from the fall off his horse; at the time he fell the horse, which was a very quiet animal, was galloping very hard. William Winter, stated that he and Follett were riding along, when deceased's horse galloped past with the saddle on, but no rider. Follett rode after the horse and caught it. Muller came up and said that Daniel was killed. They all went back, and put him on the horse, although witness thought he could not-ride. They went on with him about one hundred yards, when Wisby took him off the horse, and placed him on the side of the road. They tried to make a fire, but before they succeeded, witness went to see Daniel, and found him dead. This could only be about half an hour from the time he met with the accident. After placing him on the side of the road deceased spoke once he said, "Muller-Wisby-Winter." But witness did not think he was sensible. When satisfied he was dead, they reported the matter to Mr Rutledge. William Follet stated that deceased was so helpless when lifted on his horse after the accident that he fell forward on the horse's neck, and was unable to speak. He (deceased) had a bottle of grog (brandy, witness thought) on the saddle before the accident. Wisby opened the bottle, and Daniel took a small drop out of it. None of the others took any. A verdict was returned that deceased died on the evening of Friday, the 19th instant, from injuries caused by a fall from his horse while under the influence of liquor.

Proposed Change: Gordon,  David (I121808)

Description: SHOCKING FATAL ACCIDENT THROUGH INTEMPERANCE.
AN inquest was held at Prospect Hill, Butmaroo Creek, near Bungendore, on Monday, on view of the the body of David Gordon, before Andrew Morton, Esq., district coroner, and a jury of twelve. Deceased, was 41 years of age, and has left a numerous family of young children. He was a farmer well known in the neighbourhood of Bungendore, and resided at Prospect Hill. The circumstances under which he met his death are very shocking, as may be gathered from the appended summary of the evidence taken at the inquest. Agnes Gordon deposed that deceased was her husband, whom she saw last alive about 5 o'clock on the previous afternoon, about half-way between his residence and her father's (Mr McFadzen's) place, about half a mile distant. He was galloping very fast and appeared to be in liquor. He stopped and spoke to witness, and then went on towards her father's. Before sunset the horse he had been riding came to the yard fence, riderless, and with the stirrups crossed over the saddle. Witness sent her daughter Helen, aged 18, to see what had become of her father. She came back shortly after and said, "Oh, mother, he is lying over there." Witness then went and found deceased lying on his face near a small tree; he was bleeding from the right ear, and there was a great deal of blood lying on the ground; and his hands were doubled under his body. There was some fresh bark lying near a tree about three yards from where deceased was lying, and which appeared to have been driven from a tree about three yards from where it was displaced, and the body was about three yards from that. Deceased was quite dead. Witness observed that the skull was fractured on the left side of the forehead and temple, and that the fractured part of the skull was driven in on the brain. Deceased left his residence about eleven o'clock in the forenoon and said he was going to George Scott's, who keeps an inn at the Long Swamp, 5 or 6 miles from deceased's residence. Helen Gordon, daughter of last witness and deceased, corroborated the foregoing evidence. William McFadzen, stated that deceased was his son-in-law. Last saw him alive on the previous day about sundown, passing witness's residence, and going in the direction of his own home, about half a mile distant from witness's place. About a quarter of an hour before this he passed witness's residence, and appeared then to be very much the worse of drink. He was galloping as hard as he could and shouting. About sundown witness's daughter came for him in great distress, and witness went with her and found deceased as described by a previous witness. Witness saw the tracks of a horse as if going towards a tree which had a piece of the bark recently taken off it; the tracks indicated, to witness's mind, that the horse had been propping and swerving; the bark was off the tree about four feet from the ground, and a corresponding piece of bark lay about 5 yards distant from the tree, and deceased's hat lay about 20 yards from his body in the direction of his home. Deceased when sober was a careful rider, but when drunk was always reckless on horseback. The horse he was riding was a quiet one. Verdict that deceased was accidentally killed on Sunday evening, the 9th instant, by his head coming in contact with a tree, near his own house, while riding furiously, and under the influence of drink.

Hi Ian,

This the first of four notes on the Feilen/Mould  family. I have spoken to Jenny Briggs nee Mould about the notes and she is happy for me to submit them to you.

Below are notes on Marjorie Feilen.

Marjorie attended early schooling at Dry Farm followed by later schooling at Cooma (which involved a 4km walk each way). Part of her secondary education was at Bowral when Marjorie lived with her paternal grandmother in nearby Wingello.

In 1928 she married grazier Reginald Mould and moved to his grazing property called Glenrowan situated between Berridale and Jindabyne.

At the outbreak of WW2 in 1939 Reginald enlisted in the AIF leaving Marjorie to manage the property and four young children. Hired help and relatives helped keep Glenrowan productive. Reginald returned in 1945 and resumed management of Glenrowan.

After Reginald died in 1972, Marjorie bought a house in Blairgowrie Avenue, Cooma to which she retired. Being a very keen gardener she created a show piece rockery garden on the side of a hill at the rear of the house.

Marjorie died in Cooma at the age of 86.

Hi David

Long time! Found this in Luton, Beds, UK while doing a few searches of papers.

May be of interest for the newsletter, as the family connect via marriage to the Crawley family - butchers of Luton.

The Mrs Sturgeon in the Hillman death notice is the mother of Andrew and William Sturgeon of Cooma.

One of our 2 x great grandmother's neices married 1 x Hillman and the other 1 x Wingrave.

The Wingrave marriage made our Andrew and William Sturgeon's first cousin Mary Ann Crawley, a sister-in-law by marriage to Thomas Harrison Wingrave born circa 1842 in your database.

Mary Ann Crawley's sister Jane Crawley, married John Hillman in the funeral notice - his second wife with no issue found to date.

Now to join the dots, Phyllis May’s father George Kingman, is the brother of my grandfather, Norman Douglas Kingman (ID I378123).

Phyllis May Kingman had two younger siblings, Shirley & a brother. Info from a family reunion booklet from 1995 says they were twins, but I have no date or place of birth for either (I have little more info on their brother, so will assume he is still living, and won’t give any further detail on him).

Shirley married Ronald Charles Delarue at Windsor in 1957 (BDM 18980/1957). I have no info on Ronald’s birth. He died on 24/09/2013, and was cremated at Pinegrove Crematorium. Shirley died 9/09/2000, but I have no other info on burial/cremation.

Description: I have noticed two errors in the entries about James Hutchison.(I84110)

The notes say that he arrived with his wife and 5 children, but then it goes on to list the 8 children who arrived on the General Hewitt in 1848. All are listed on the passenger, one under her married name.

The page at http://www.monaropioneers.com/nimmitabel/pioneers/hutchison-j.htm  has two mistakes.

"James Hutchison Jnr Cooma 1862

James Hutchison, born 1803 in Buckinghamshire England married Selina Ann Lampit Haynes in England, James and Selina set sail for the colony of NSW on the 22.7.1848, on board the General Hewitt.

Upon arriving in Australia the couple lived in Queanbeyan. The couple had 5 children."

* It says that James Hutchison was born in Buckingham, rather than Dumfries. (more accurately Mouswald, just outside Dumfries)
* It repeats the previous error regarding the number of children.

Hi Ian,

Just been doing a bit of tidying up on one of my trees, and found another link to the Monaro Pioneer site, and wanted to join some dots on the site.

Herbert Butler (ID I383265) married Gertrude May Bevan (ID I383266) at Beggan Beggan (Presbyterian Church) on 18/01/1914 (BDM 4033/1914). Herbert was born around 1878 (he was around 14 years older than Gertrude, but I have no more info on where or exactly when he was born). Gertrude was born in Central Cumberland (Parramatta), on 31/03/1892 (BDM 10559/1892).

They divorced in 1925, Herbert citing adultery as the issue. The decree absolute was granted in November 1925.

The Sydney Morning Herald Thursday 9 April 1925

The Sydney Morning Herald Wednesday 4 November 1925

Gertrude died at The Coast Hospital, Randwick on 20/04/1929 (BDM 6408/1929), and was buried at Carlingford Cemetery. Herbert’s death & burial information unknown.

The Sydney Morning Herald Saturday 27 April 1929

BUTLER.-April 20, 1929, at Coast Hospital, Gertrude May Butler, dearly-loved third daughter of William and Ellen Bevan, of Cumberland-street, Carlingford, aged 36 years. At rest. Interred in the Church of England Cemetery, Carlingford, on 21st instant.

As far as I can find they had two children, Frederick W (ID I383264), and Gladys Elsie Butler, born in Ryde, in 1914 (BDM 39295/1914). Gladys married William Charles Salmon at Rockdale in November 1932 (BDM 13888/1932). They divorced in 1945, Gladys citing desertion as the issue.

The Sydney Morning Herald Tuesday 3 September 1946

Gladys Elsie Salmon died at Kogarah (I’m assuming St George hospital) on 16/07/1972 (BDM 58722/1972).

Ryerson’s index

Now to join some dots.

Gertrude May Bevan was the sister of my Great Grandmother Alice Maud Bevan (ID I248071) and therefore the daughter of William Bevan (ID I248072) and Ann Ellen Dorman (ID I248073).

I’ve also included a trashy report of Gertrude & Herbert’s divorce from the Truth newspaper. As flippant and disrespectful as the reporting is, it does give some good detail around dates and places.

HERBERGER

From: Allen Gibbon
Sent: Saturday, 11 March 2017 3:52 PM
Subject: Revised Notes - Herberger, Charles Ludwig (also known as Carl Ludwig) 1823-1902

Hi Ian,

These notes revise the current notes because two important recently found NSW Government Gazette entries have shed more light on the activities of Charles (Carl) Herberger during 1860 and 1862.

Carl (Charles) Herberger was born in Saint Andreasberg, Hanover, about 1823. In spite of several searches no documentary evidence has emerged concerning the identity of his parents. There has been strong circumstantial evidence which suggest that he was closely related to and was a younger sibling of August Schlick’s wife, Louisa Herberger, who was also born in Saint Andreasberg. Carl married Wilhelmina Kutcher in Hanover (probably St Andreasberg) in 1846.

Carl’s occupation was stated as miner. In 1847 Carl and his wife arrived in Adelaide on the sailing ship Heloise. Unlike the Schlicks, the Herbergers were not sponsored and had to pay their way. They eventually ended up in the Adelaide Hills where Carl took on contract work, mainly road building.

On 6 June 1849 daughter Hanna (Annie) was born. She was one of three children born to the Herbergers. None were registered with the State or Lutheran Church. According to Carl’s death certificate there was an unnamed boy and girl. Presumably, they both died in infancy.

In 1852 August Schlick joined the Victorian goldrush and consigned 3 ounces to Carl Herberger. The Herbergers were sponsors at the baptism for two of the Schlick children. The Lutheran Church in Adelaide has no other records on the Herbergers. Another association between Carl and August Schlick was their joint attendances at political meetings in Hahndorf.

A mini short lived goldrush was started in the Adelaide Hills when Carl discovered a small quantity of gold in late 1858. The last press report on Carl was in April 1859. A descendent stated that he owned land at Hahndorf from 1856-60.

The NSW Government Gazette of 11 December 1860  reported that there was uncollected mail for Mr C Herberger, Kiandra. This indicates that he was probably in Kiandra during the goldrush. As he was closely associated with August Schlick it was likely that the two were together in the Monaro. August Schlick’s wife reported to the Destitute Board that August had been missing from April 1860. August reappeared in Adelaide in late 1861 and shortly after the family travelled overland to Nimmo on the Monaro. It is suspected that Carl and family accompanied the Schlicks and continued on to Cathcart.

According to Carl’s death certificate, he lived in NSW from 1860. His wife’s certificate incorrectly states 1847 which was when they arrived in SA. The whereabouts of his wife and daughter from 1859 to 1861 is not known, however it is unlikely they would have accompanied Carl to Kiandra. An early 1863 NSW Gazette revealed that Charles Herberger had paid one pound for a licence to cut hardwood timber on Crown Land in the Bombala district. The licence was issued in the last half of 1862.

Carl (Charles) and and his wife spent the rest of their lives in Cathcart. Carl worked as a stonemason and carpenter. They also owned a shop.

Description: OBITUARY.

MRS. NICHOLAS CARBERRY, GOBARRALONG.

Between 10 and 11 o'clock on Saturday morning last the death occurred of Mrs. Nicholas Carberry, of Gobarralong. The deceased had been in failing health for the last two years, but the illness that terminated fatally had extended over, the last three months. Dr. O'Dwyer (Gundagai) and latterly Dr. Brennan (Cootamundra) had been in attendance, but it was found impossible to stay the summons, and death came as a happy release from suffering. Everything was done that could possible be accomplished to ease deceased's last days on earth, and trained nurses, assisted by devoted and untiring daughters, did all possible to soothe and comfort the afflicted one. Nurse K. McKenzie (Cootamundra) was at the time of death, and for some weeks before in attendance on the patient. The cause of death was diabetes, bronchitis having supervened. The deceased was born in Newmarket, near Cork (Ireland), and at the time of her death was 58 years of age. In the "sixties" she came to Australia, and at Tumut in 1870 Father Toomey celebrated her marriage with Mr. Nicholas Carberry, her maiden name being Margaret Falvey. As the issue of the marriage there are six children four boys and two girls, viz., Herb., Hugh, Jerome, Evelyn, Joseph and Mary. The father and all the members of the family survive. The late Mrs. John Carberry, of Gobarralong, was a sister of deceased, and several of her brothers, one time resident of Victoria, have also passed away. Ever since her marriage Mrs. Carberry had been living , at Gately's Creek and Gobarralong, and right through her life had been cast on the lines of charity to all and faithful to the true principles of womanhood. Kind and gentle to all, it mattered not whether he was a squatter or swagman to whom she spoke all were treated with unfailing kindness. To those whom force of circumstances compel to tramp the country, the deceased was ever generous, and no man ever left her home short of food. Her life on earth is eloquently testified to by the family she leaves behind, every member of which is a credit to the district. The four sons are well known for their ability and integrity, and the daughters are following in the path of their mother. All were devotedly attached to her, and though the blow was known to be coming, the wrench in a happy home was none the less severe. All the members of the family were gathered round her bedside when the deceased passed quietly away. Fathers Donovan and Sharkey had been in constant attendance during the illness, and Mrs. Carberry left this world fortified by the rights of the church. Mass was celebrated in Gobarralong church next morning by Rev. Father Donovan, when the prayers of a large congregation were offered up for the repose of her soul. Father Donovan also referred to the noble life lived by deceased on earth, and said she was now reaping the reward of her good deeds and works. The funeral left Goburralong at 1 o'clock on Sunday, several hundred persons following the remains from the house. All along the route to the Coolac cemetery mourners joined the cortege, and when the resting place was reached there were five hundred persons in a procession that extended for a considerable length. Many had faced journeys of 50 and 60 miles to pay a last mark of respect to one universally revered and esteemed, and amongst those present around the grave were leading residents of Gundagai, Gobarralong, Jugiong, Cooney's Creek, Bowning, Cootamundra, Muttama, Coolac, Bongongolong, Darbalara, Wagra, Brungle and Tumut. The pall-bearers were Messrs. Thomas Carberry, Edwin Carberry (nephews of deceased), P. J. Roche and J. J. Sullivan. Rev. Father Donovan, assisted by Father Sharkey, read the burial service, and expressed the sorrow of all with the bereaved family on their great loss. Mr. C. Harrington (Gundagai) had charge of the funeral arrangements.

My grandmother Clara Jane Connelly was born at Rose Vale  and she married Frederick Peter South from Goulburn in 1916.

I’m writing a family history of the Connelly’s with references to the Bowermans of Bredbo and the Oldfields of Queanbeyan. It will contain family photos and artefacts collected by my grandmother and handed on to me for the family history project. There are photos of Rose Vale and Patrick Connelly that I’m happy to share.

On the Monaro Pioneers website I noticed that a contributor has provided a photo of Patrick Connelly and Sarah Abbie Oldfield on their wedding day.

I would love to be allowed to use the photo in my non commercial, self published book- to - be but don’t know how to go about seeking / receiving permission.

Of course I would be delighted to donate copies of the book when it is published; in July this year my husband and I are travelling to Tuam and other places in Galway where the ancestors came from.

We’ll be taking original photos of landmarks, villages etc to use in the book.

If any members of your Monaro Project would like to contact me re the book or family connections that would be great.  Looking forward to hearing from you

Dear David,

I was just going through old emails and reading this again.  I think this David Clark must have been my Grandfather David Hoye Clark’s Uncle as William and Grace were certainly his father’s parent.  His name was James Brock Clark.  My Grandfather David Hoye Clark died in the July (I think) of 1943 not long after my Baptism.

I am very interested about the e on the end of Clark as I believe my Great Grandmother Janet Clark was very adamant about no e but my Grandfather had an e on the end of Clarke supposedly because of his first wife.  While I know his first daughter’s name was Lorna Clarke I don’t know anything about his first wife.  He must have been fairly young when he first married as he was only 27years old (or there about) when he married my Grandmother Elsie Smede in 1912 in Mudgee at the Church of England Church.

Kind regards,   Pamela Stoneman (Mrs)

Hi Pamela,

If you check our database, you will find the first wife of David Hoye Clark(e), Louisa C. Clarke (1882-1906) is now included along with their daughter Lorna Cecelia J. Clarke.

Hi David & Ian,

Thank you for the great newsletters & for keeping the Monaro Pioneers website going, for so many to learn from & enjoy with their family history research.

I'm sorry that I haven't let you know before this that my father, Clyde Bridle, passed away peacefully in his sleep on 8/12/2016 at Bupa Nursing Home at Tumut, aged 92 years.

Dad's name was 'Albert William Clyde Bridle' but he was always known as Clyde. He was the last of the Bridle line to pass away, from the family of James & Clara (nee Green) Bridle. William & Martha Bridle were Monaro residents, as were the Green family, Thomas & Mary Ann (nee Venables) Green, so there are many Monaro Pioneer descendants among our family. Many of these descendants have lived well in to their 90's.

Please find attached his Obituary, which appeared in the Tumut & Adelong Times.

OBITUARY FOR CLYDE BRIDLE

Clyde Bridle was born on January 11, 1924 in Sydney Street, Tumut and was named Albert William Clyde. He was the youngest child of a family of nine, to Clara and Jim Bridle of Blowering.

He began his schooling at West Blowering School and later at the school at Brandy Mary’s Flat. The Bridle family lived on East Blowering at ‘Willow Vale’, which is now under the Blowering Dam spillway. In his younger days, he enjoyed cricket and tennis.

After his school years, Clyde worked at rabbiting and general labouring jobs, including millet cutting. He also worked out at Nymagee in the 1940’s, helping with a scoop and bucket and 4-5 horses making ‘tanks’ or dam building. During WW2 he attempted to enlist on more than one occasion but failed the medical. He moved in to Blowering Road with his parents in 1945.

One of the jobs he was justly proud of was in the early 1950’s when he made hundreds of cement blocks out of material sourced from the Yarrangobilly River. These blocks were then used in the construction of the Yarrangobilly CWA Rooms. He also made many more bricks that were used in the construction of the family home at Blowering Road, Tumut.

On April 10, 1954 he married the love of his life, Melba Le Fevre of Tumut Plains, at All Saints Church of England in Tumut. Three daughters arrived in 3 & ½ years, Shirley, Maree and Christine. The family lived at Blowering Road for 30 years.

Clyde worked at various jobs, the Forestry, the PMG as a postman and on the night telephone exchange, at local sawmills and at orchards. After his retirement he was often seen walking around Tumut delivering pamphlets.

He was involved in organisations such as the Back to Blowering activities & Brandy Mary’s Park just below the Blowering Dam wall. He was active at the Tumut Museum and enjoyed bush walking, photography and gardening. Clyde was a loyal supporter of the Australian Labor Party and the family history group, the Buddong Society. Clyde and Melba moved in to Kaleema Crescent in 1984.

He went to reside at Bupa Nursing Home in the Blowering wing in December 2010, where Melba was also a resident. He always joined in and enjoyed all the activities at Bupa.

Clyde passed away peacefully at Bupa Nursing Home in Sydney Street, Tumut on December 8, 2016 aged 92 years. His funeral was held on December 16 at All Saints Anglican Church and he was laid to rest in the Tumut Lawn Cemetery. He was the last surviving member of the Bridle family and was proud of his Blowering roots and mountain heritage. He was predeceased by his parents, Clara and Jim Bridle, and his brothers and sisters – Jaspa Bridle, Dot Green, Kitty Prosser, Claude Bridle, Jack Bridle, Trixie Clugston, Rolfe Bridle & Wallace Bridle.

He is survived by his wife of 62 & ½ years, Melba, daughters and their husbands - Shirley & Phillip Thatcher of Werris Creek, Maree & Marty Myhill of Young, Christine Ballard of Tumut (& the late Laurie Ballard). There are 5 loving grandchildren - Wendy & Suzy, Yvette & Ross, & Jodi, along with 11 great grandchildren - Justin, Luke & Hayden; Phil, Emily, Daniel & Jett; Jacob; twins Alexander & Benjamin, & Henry. He is also survived by his sister-in-law, Mavis Bridle and many caring nephews and nieces.

Clyde was a quiet, gentle man who was loved and respected by all who knew him. He will be sadly missed by his family and friends.

Description: From 'The Queanbeyan Age', 18.7.1916:
DEATH OF MR LEWIS SOUTHWELL.  About midday on Saturday last the death was reported of Mr Lewis Southwell of this town.  Deceased was the eldest son of Mr Samuel Southwell, of Woodburn, Hall, and was born in the neighbourhood of Ginninderra 49 years ago.  Latterly he had been in the employ of the Federal Capital Territory authorities, and the work in which he was engaged up to within a few days of his death was the sewerage construction works.  Owing to what was regarded as only a slight disposition, he remained home for a few days, and then resumed his occupation, only to again return to his home evidently seriously unwell.  His case was diagnosed by his medical attendant as one of acute pneumonia, and despite all his doctor's efforts, the complaint, in the brief period of three days, proved fatal.  The deceased leaves a widow and five or six children, the elder of whom are grown up.  Much sympathy is felt for the bereaved family and his wide circle of relatives.  The interment took place yesterday in the Methodist section of the general cemetery, the burial service being conducted by the Revs W Jenkins (Methodist) and G H Hirst (Church of England), the retinue of mourners being numerous.

Description: From 'The Sydney Mail', 11 January 1868:
DEATH BY BURNING. - A very melancholy event occurred on Thursday, 2nd instant, at Spring Creek (says the Queanbeyan Age), near Parkwood, by which an interesting little girl was hurried to the grave.  The deceased was the only child of Mr Samuel Southwell, eldest son of Mr John Southwell, of Gininderra Creek, and was hardly two years old.  On the afternoon of the day mentioned the unfortunate child was left by her mother indoors while she went to the creek for water.  Mrs Southwell was away not more than five minutes, and on entering the house was shocked to find her child lying dead before the fireplace.  A glance at the body and the state of the room was enough to account for death.  The child was completely charred.  Her clothing was burned to ashes, and was still smouldering.  Deceased, in her mother's absence, appears to have gone to the fire and got her clothes ignited, and then to have run round the room, and finally fallen upon her face and died where she was found.  Death, from its suddenness, appeared to have been as much from the shock which the system experienced, as from the actual injuries received.  The mother picked up the lifeless form of her little one and went out to alarm her husband, who was reaping in an adjoining paddock, but of course all earthly aid was unavailing.  Dr Morton proceeded yesterday to the place and held an inquest on the remains.  The jury returned a verdict, that deceased, Harriet Southwell, came by her death from injuries by fire accidentally received.

licence at the Lord Raglan Inn at Cooma in April 1860. See  the book "Back to Cooma" (page 11)

There are also newspaper articles about him while at the Lord Raglan Hotel during late 1860.

I am trying to find out if this John Curtis is a relative of mine. The dates are correct - I have a Newspaper article from May 1860 (Sydney Morning Herald) stating my John Curtis was moving back to Cooma from Sydney.  He was definitely in Cooma in 1860 - his daughter was born there in late 1860. Hew was also there October 1861 (another newspaper article).

Would you know where I would be able to confirm if he is my relative. I am happy to drive to Cooma to go to the Family History section if necessary.

Regards,  Mary Wilson
