MACKAY

Subject: Duncan Mackay Family

Hi Ian,

I am related to Duncan Mackay who may appear as three separate persons on your web site (5218, 147,663 and 303593). In relation to the first,  a George Mackay (son) was born in Eddrachellis in May 1831. In relation to the second Mary Hughina (daughter) was born in Eddrachellis in 1833 17 May and went on to marry a Chopin. The third has Barbara, Donald Hugh and Duncan.
Barbara is recorded as born in 1838 which is likely correct but not in Australia as the ship they came on (The James Moran) arrived Sydney Feb 1839 in the following year.

Evidence of them being the same family is in the James Moran's passenger list (attached -family no 9 first page.). I am fairly confident about this but don't rule out the possibility that George came from another Duncan.

You may or may not have a record of the other family members (Johanna, Fairlee, Colina and Margaret) who were in the same family. I have not find any yet.

The web site is impressive and I am very grateful to all the people who must have put time into it.

Regards,  Marcus

Thank you for letting us know,

Subject: John Fox/Holmes

Hi Ian,

I have been researching the man I believe is my 3 x great grandfather John Holmes, he was born John Fox in Goulburn in 1847, and on the Monaro pioneers it has that this John Fox died in 1847, I believe this to be incorrect and that he at some point moved to the Bombala region where he and his brother were adopted by John Holmes, there is a birth record for a John Fox, but it has the mother as Ann and the father as George, the father is correct but mother isn't, I know mistakes can happen on birth certificates etc as I have done that with my son and one of his sisters names on his birth certificate.

From doing my research there seems to be quiet a few people with the same opinion,

   Thanks for a great website

    Deb

Thank you Deb,

Can you provide any details on John Holme’s family and descendants?

Regards, Ian

Hi Ian, I have attached what my cousin olivia peters has on the Monaro pioneers website, Mary Anne Murphy also married a Thomas Triggell, my line of the Holmes /Fox/Clarke comes through Mary Ann Clarke and John Holmes daughter Essie Rebecca Holmes, my Aunty Lynne has put a correction up saying it's not them due to having sited Essies birth certificate which states john was born at sea, Olivia has 7 of the children's birth certificates and we have been through them and Mary Ann states that John was born at sea on 3 of them, John has put on a few if them that he was born in Sydney and N.S.W, another one Mary Ann states he was born at Maharatta down near Bombala, im of the thinking John would know where he was born.

 Thanks for your time

Thank you,

Subject: Anderson Family tree

Hi Ian,

I have recently opened an account with Monaro Pioneers & have been very successful in finding information on my mothers relations from the Braidwood area.

What I want to know is can I add members of the family to the family tree info?

I found my grandfather & grandmother, pop's info is there but there is no death date for nanna who is of course deceased & so is my mother.

His name is William Frederick Anderson, 1887-1937. His wife is Lillie May but there is no info on her. Can I provide that info?

I am so pleased I found this info as I only recently found out that pop's name is on the Cenotaph in Braidwood. I was in Canberra last week & drove to Braidwood to see it. Then I went to the library in Braidwood & followed the info they gave me which led me to you.

I have recently moved back to NSW after living in WA for 38 years & I'm taking a keen interest in mum's family.

Is it the case that only deceased people can be added?

You can contact on this email address & I look forward to your reply.

Regards Jo Tyndall

Hi Jo,

We are delighted you have found our website useful.  We would also appreciate any additional information you can provide, just send the update information you want to add to me I will update our database.  We do add the information on living people to our database to assist future researchers but our system will on display surname and initials while they are still living for privacy purposes.

Thank you, I will do that.

CALDWELL/ALLEN/MURDOCH

Comments (Home): Hi at Monaro Pioneers.

Wondering if these pics could be added to Monaro Pioneers names?

Bombala Cemetery photos

- Franklin Lyle/Olive (nee Murdoch) (my grandparents via Fay Jeanette)

- Allen/Mina Caldwell. (I have sneaking suspicion that Caldwells 'might' be related to Allens or to Murdochs)

Regards,  Greg Long. Canberra.

Thank you Greg,

Mina Alison Caldwell nee Murdoch is indeed related to the Allen’s and Murdoch’s.

Regards, Ian

Cheers Ian, thanks.

The next big question, which may have been solved, is who Elizabeth Murdoch married (prior to Andrew Gilbert) to bear William Murdoch my Grandmother Olive’s dad (he of the bullock shoeing fame). There’s some historic sensitivity to this since William was born out of wedlock (so the story goes).   Perhaps members of my family know the answer or the answer probably lies in Manning River district/Taree news of around that time – 1870’s.

This is intriguing since, as kids we (my kin) were introduced to various very close Bombala district ‘friends’ of my grand-parents Frank and Olive; Mina/Allen Caldwell are an example. It seemed odd how over the years these ‘friends’ often embraced us like long lost waifs. It’s mostly since the death of Olive that the truth of those relationships has emerged, too late, sadly to have built upon them – must have been difficult for them to know and not to tell.

All the best

Hi Greg,

Sorry, we have no information that will assist you on Elizabeth Murdoch although the NSW BDM entry for William’s birth shows his Mother’s name was Elizabeth Martha.

Regards, Ian

I am make enquiries about a William George Lloyd 1830-1891 on your pioneers list. His spouse was Mary Ann (nee Meade) Lloyd 1834-1876. Children Walter 1857; Rose 1874; Alexander 1871; James 1869; George 1864; Henry 1865 or 1869; Jane 1868; Ernest 1861; William 1860; Charles 1858 and 1 unnamed child 1863-1863.

If William and Mary match then they are my 3 x Grandparents. Walter being 2 x Grandparent and his daughter, Zelma being my Grandmother.

Thanking you for any assistance

Christine A Thomson

Hi Christine,

It would appear you are correct and your 2xggrandfather was Walter John Lloyd, son of William George and Mary nee Meade.  However, I would recommend you obtain transcriptions of Walter John’s marriage to Fanny Elizabeth Clarke (1887 Hay. NSW) and his death (22/4/1920 Arncliffe) to verify the connection.

Hi Ian

Judith wrote to you about the Campbell/Walsh family, mentioning a link to Elizabeth Slaven.

I'm connected to the other Slavin's, Michael and Margaret's family. My Aunt contributed the information on this family to MP. I'm probably the family member currently most involved with family history. I would be happy for you to forward my email to Judith.

I am not aware of Elizabeth, and her dates don't quite fit for her to be Michael's daughter or sister, but I am happy to compare notes

Hi Judith,

Here is contact for you as a result of your recent query in our newsletter.

Hi Ian,

I trust you are well.

I’m sure I found the info before on your site regarding the Hunter family of Wapengo, however it is not there now!

I’m interested is seeing the family tree of Charlotte Hunter .. married name Dorl

If I remember correctly her father was John Hunter?

There is also a mystery with this family Alice Hunter .. Married Gorge Pearce .. was supposes to be a sister of Charlotte , however there was no linkage on the previous info I saw.

Would you have any further information on my enquiry?

Regards,  Max

Hi Max,

Please check again, I think you will find all the information is there now.

Regards, Ian

Many thanks Ian,  I found the Hunter info.

I would like to see the Pearce family listed in Monaro Pioneers .

My line is Joseph Pearce married Maria Wilson .. lived in a stone house on  the site where the Norfolk Pine Motel is now .. his land went down to Merimbula lake.

There is a very good story told by Maria about living in Merimbula .. in Trove Sydney news  paper    ..

Could this happen?

Regards,  Max

Hi Max,

Joseph Pearce has been added to our Pioneer Index.  The information we have on his descendants is lacking in detail and any additional information you could provide would be much appreciated.

Description: A thorough trawl of the NSW register of births has been unable to identify a birth record  for Emily Harriett PLUMB and Keziah PLUMB.  I'm aware that not all records exist but the Plumbs did appear to religiously register the remainder of their children, hence I'm having trouble accepting Harriet; but she may still exist.  Considering the recording of the christian names was written down as to how the person believed the name was spelt, I now believe Cassire and Keziah are the same person.  Are you able to shed any light one these two issues please.  As there are mistakes pertaining to the dates of birth for the Plumb siblings in the Monaro Pioneers database, I've now identified the actual dates of birth and dates of death for the Plumbs, and can provide if required. Thanks and regards

Brad Hock

Hi Brad,

Thanks for information, I have merged the two individuals Keziah and Cassire in our records.  I am unable to comment on Emily Harriett though as we have no documentary evidence to draw upon.  The information we have is as supplied to us and I would suggest obtaining a transcription of her marriage or death might decide the issue.  Perhaps she was “adopted” which was quite common at that time.  We would also appreciate any additional or corrective information you can provide.
