Scotland Census Records state

Alexander JAMIESON was born around 1802 to 1805  Moneghan, Ireland.

Robert JAMIESON was born about 1827 Ireland.

Also seen surname as JAMISON and JAMESON.

I doubt parents will be named on the Scotland Death certificate for Alexander as it was before civil registration so will probably only be similar to Aussie burial records. His wife Sarah's 1878 Death Certificate would probably hold more information regarding place or birth and date/place of marriage.

Apart from that posting a query on Ancestry on the Monaghan Ireland Message Board might find some nice person willing to go to archives etc to do a look up.

RYAN

Comments: Grateful for any information re parents of Mary Ann RYAN m. 1857 to Michael McCarthy in Cooma. Marriage certificate cites Honorah Hogan (nee Dwyer) giving permission for Mary to marry - what was their relationship? I thought she might be her mother (their 2nd child was named after her), but Mary's DC gives Mary as the mother. There is evidence of James and Honorah Ryan coming to Australia in 1841 on the 'Livingstone' with 4 children - they had another, Margaret Esther, in Cooma in 1845 and I thought Mary Ann might also have been born to them in 1841/42 which would accord with her age of 15 at her marriage in 1857, but I can't confirm this. There is no information about parents on the marriage certificate, even though Michael's mother, Johanna, was still alive at the time and, if Honorah was Mary's mother, why wasn't she listed as such? I also can't find Mary's BC with James as the father and Mary or Honorah as the mother, but we know she was born at Bullembalong, near Berridale (as cited in death notice in Manaro Mercury, 23/10/1922). Appreciate any help in resolving this.

Many thanks!   Cheryl Scott (nee McCarthy)

Hi Cheryl,

We don’t have any information that might link Mary Ann Ryan to James and Honora Ryan unfortunately. This email will be included in our next newsletter and perhaps one of our readers may able to assist you.  I also suggest you put you request on our Facebook page.

CARROLL

From: Ian Burke
Sent: Sunday, 25 June 2017 12:02 PM
Subject: Tracing people ......

Ian,

The other day quite by chance while looking for something else, I came across an entry in your Sept 2014 newsletter from Mrs Lindsay Upton of NZ, enquiring about the grave of James Carroll in Michelago cemetery.  I think she is a descendant.

I called at the cemetery a few weeks ago (again, looking for something else….) and found the grave.  Date of death is 1882 at age 83, giving a birthdate of 1798-9.

I am wondering whether this could be the James Carroll who worked at Gegedzerick for many years, originally a convict.  This James Carroll’s birthdate I thought was about 1792 (but you would be aware of frequent discrepancies in birthdates, particularly Irish), I think he may have been assigned to Richard Brooks, Maneroo, in about 1829 (but I am not completely certain of that either, I’ve got it noted but haven’t noted the source – possibly the 1837 General Return).  However he arrived at Gegedzerick, he later became one of the most important employees, with his wife and I think about 3 sons.  Carroll’s lake (about 6 or 7 miles south east of Gegedzerick homestead itself) was called after him and I think he and his family lived over there (Brookses still live over there).  The family disappears from the Gegedzerick records in the 1850s, I had previously thought he might have been the Carroll who was murdered by bushrangers in the mid-1850s while on his way to Braidwood to deliver something for his employer, but that might have been one of his sons or another Carroll (there seem to have been quite a few Carrolls who were not related).

I can’t find anything further in later newsletters, but would be very interested to know if you heard anything from anyone and if you had any more contact from Mrs Upton herself.

If this is the James Carroll I am thinking of (and if I’ve got the facts right), the grave is extremely interesting as being one of the few marked graves of someone who came to the Monaro in the 1820s.

Michelago cemetery is endlessly fascinating in this regard.  Garrett Cotter is buried near James Carroll and a number of the earliest Irish settlers are buried there.

Regards,  Ian

Hi Ian,

If you check our database, we have the James Carroll who was buried in the Michelago Cemetery with his family.  He was a free settler who arrived in 1856 with his family on the Commodore Perry.  Can you provide any more detail on the James Carroll, convict, to which you refer?

Regards, Ian

Thanks for that, Ian.

I’m a bit disappointed that the grave isn’t that of the James Carroll I am interested in, it would have been pretty exciting if it were although a few minutes research should have been enough to show me it couldn’t have been, as usual I am not thinking too clearly …..  I’ve also now had a look at all the James Carrolls on the website, I’ve found the James Carroll who is in the grave, but none of them could be the James Carroll of Gegedzerick.

I am writing up what I know of this James Carroll but I need to research further, it is an important story and will be in my book which I hope to bring out in Spring 2018 (but that depends on when I stop work, I am still working full time as a government lawyer in Canberra and only get occasional days at Gegedzerick Flat where I do most of my writing).   I might publish a short article about him in the meanwhile – but the Snowy River Echo has changed so much, the Cooma-Monaro Express has been closed (in disgraceful circumstances) and I don’t feel comfortable in the Monaro Post (which is more into sport and contemporary events).  In any case I don’t want my main original material to come out before the book does.

I have found the notes I made about the bushranging incident – turns out it was in 1866 or 7 – the Gegedzerick James Carroll disappears from the records in 1850.  Given the dates, the murder victim couldn’t have been him.  I don’t know now why I thought it might have been, perhaps it was the reference to the one pound note – I remember stories from the old people about how Brookses would send men to Braidwood and Goulburn with money for various purposes, the old people told me this as examples of the trust that existed between the Brookses and their employees – so I seem to have assumed that was what happened here

(Actually I now think James Carroll of Gegedzerick must died in 1850 when he would have been into his 60s (which was an old age then) there was a payment of “sundries” to one of his sons – which would happen when an employee died.   His is probably another of the unmarked graves in the Catholic portion of Gegedzerick cemetery)

I also wonder who Phegan and Macdonnell were.  There are no doubt more records somewhere about this strange event (probably in the SMH itself, this is only a summary of the editorial, I’ll find the full thing one day) – it is interesting how strange or macabre things like this seem to have happened in the 1860s, my guess is that the gold rush and “gold fever”, plus the tension and unrest of the Robertson land reforms, had some sort of effect on the community and society which seems to have changed about that time – I know a number of people writing at that time remarked on the differences in society which they didn’t think were for the better either.  The book I am working on covers Monaro in the 20 years 1823-1843, the next 20 years up to the 1860s would require a book of its own.

Regards,  Ian

Ian,

This is another review that appeared in the Monaro Post last November.  You probably already know this book.  My review doesn’t do it justice, it really is an interesting book but I had been asked for another short article with a Cooma-Monaro angle and this is all I could come up with in the time …..

What amazes me is how much I learn from writing things like this.  I can see now how flawed St Paul’s church is, the tower ruins it …..   Soares’s style in the church itself was an early Victorian pure form of Early English.  The tower he designed at the same time would have been in the same style.  Christchurch in Queanbeyan (widely considered to be Soares’s masterpiece) has both church and tower to the original design all in the pure Early English style – and the result is restrained and rewarding to look at, it seems exactly right for early Monaro of those times.

But when they came to build the tower of St Paul’s in 1890, Soares’s original design was considered to be too plain and so the tower was built in a high Victorian English Decorated style which is badly at odds with the style of the church itself.  Probably the builders were influenced by St Andrew’s Presbyterian church which was built just around the corner in the 1880s in high Victorian English Decorated style which was the height of fashion by that time.  And it is really a good example of that style, the window facing the street (in pure Late Decorated style, going into Perpendicular) is quite magnificent.

But obviously seeing this very fashionable Presbyterian building, the Church of England people thought they wanted something fancier for their tower than the austere Early English design Soares had done for it – so they built their tower in the much more fashionable and fancy English Decorated style – and I really wish they hadn’t have done that.  If completed to Soares’s original style the building would have been architecturally very striking – but as it is I think Graham Burrow is justified in “hesitating to call it beautiful…” (even though I took umbrage with that in the review)

I hadn’t really thought about any of this when I wrote that review ….  It just shows that our Monaro towns are not entirely devoid of “culture” doesn’t it.  We just need to have our eyes opened as to the way we look around us and the way we think about their history.

Regards,  Ian

Also, because of the statement of the headstone that his native place is Glasgow and his age as 46 years in 1949, it is possible that he was born in Scotland in about 1803.Another clue to his birth place is that his religion was church f Scotland. The Irish tended toward Catholic or Church of Ireland. I am trying to confirm the birth details

Hi Eileen,

Thank you for the information, the shipping records show John’s native place as County Down, Ireland but the family would have known the facts and our records now show Glasgow.

Description: Obituary.

THE LATE MRS. JNO. SHEEDY

In the death of Mrs. Bridget Sheedy, relict of the late Mr. Jno. Sheedy, there has passed away another of the early pioneers of the Queanbeyan district. The subject of these memoirs passed peacefully to her eternal reward on Friday morning last in Sydney at the residence of her daughter, Miss Lena Sheedy.

The deceased lady was 78 years of age and was born at Marulan and on her marriage settled with her husband in this district where she reared a large family of sons and daughters. She had been ailing only a short time and her death was not unexpected.

The deceased lady was greatly esteemed by her many acquaintances for her charitable disposition and kindness to anyone in need of assistance in sickness or trouble, and her numerous friends will cherish her memory for years to come.

The remains were brought to Queanbeyan by train yesterday morning and taken to St. Gregory's church, of which, during her residence here, deceased was a devout adherent. The funeral took place yesterday and was largely attended by many relatives and friends who came long distances to pay their last respect to the deceased lady. The last prayers at the graveside were recited by the Rev. Father Lehain, while the funeral arrangements were conducted by Mr. Henry Lazarus.

Eight sons, four daughters and 37 grand children are left to mourn the loss of a loving and fond mother. The sons are : Patrick J. Sheedy, J.P., of Tharwa, William John and Lieut. Martin Edward Sheedy (Sydney), Francis Bernard Sheedy, Sergeant-Major Michael James Sheedy, Henry Austin Sheedy, of Wingello; Thomas Andrew Sheedy, of Uabba, Lake Cargellico; Furane B. Sheedy, Milton Park, Bowral. The daughters are : Miss Lena Sheedy (Sydney), Mrs. Charles Gumley (North Sydney), Mrs. Wm. Burns (Murwillumbah) and Mrs Lewis. (Sydney).

He leaves a family of ten children totally unprovided for, and was but 45 years of age when he died. During his residence in Cooma, since about the year 1879, Mr. McAuliffe identified himself with the public movement of the day. For a term he was an alderman of Cooma Municipal Council, and he took much interest in the local Pastoral and Agricultural Association. In the affairs of the Roman Catholic Church, he took a very deep interest, and was Warden of St. Patrick's Guild. The funeral starts at 3 o'clock on Sunday afternoon.

Dear Adam,

YES I do agree there is only ONE registration

BUT that registration comes up when EITHER date (26.4.1847 / 21.9.1847) is put in the search request.

My particular interest is the Thomas Higgs that married Bridget Noonan in 1876 (2377/1876)

Thanking you for your precious time

Good Afternoon Lesley,

Thanks for your enquiry.

I will answer your questions in turn below:

I am led to believe there were TWO Thomas Higgs’ born in 1849, one on 26 April and the other 21 September.

If I put either date into your search bar both dates come up with the same registration number (2182/1849 V18492182 34A)

I can only find one registration for a Thomas Higgs on our birth index’s for an 1849 birth, not two. Not sure what your source on this information is.

I also was wondering if NSW BDM have any desire to record death details (Qld Registration Numbers) for my sister and mother both born in NSW.

I am happy to send emailed copies of their Death Certificates if required.

The registry only records life events(birth death and marriage)that occur in the borders of NSW.

Description: WHEEO.

DEATH.-I am sorry to report the death of Mrs. Barnard McSorley, which took place at her residence, Mountfield, on Thursday last, 26th instant. The deceased had been ailing for a considerable length of time, but her malady was not of a painful nature. The funeral took place on Saturday, and was very largely attended. Mrs. McSorley was fifty nine years of age, and leaves a husband and a large family of sons and daughters, all grown up. The old inhabitants keep dropping off one by one, thus forcibly reminding us that "it is appointed unto all men once to die."

Description: Seems there was an illegitimate child fathered by John and the mother Mary McGillies 1870.

GOULBURN POLICE COURT. SATURDAY, MAY 25.  BEFORE the police magistrate.

John McSorley, apprehended on warrant charged by Mary McGillies with deserting his illegitimate   child, was brought up on remand. Mr. Gannon appeared for the complainant, and Mr. Betts for defendant, who pleaded inability to pay for the child's support. Two separate orders had been made against defendant requiring him to contribute towards the child's support; but for the last twelve months he had contributed nothing. An agreement had been made some time since between the parties that on payment of £18 down no further proceedings should be taken and defendant be released from all future claims on the part of complainant; but he had paid only £8 17s. Mr. Gannon, for the complainant, stated that his client was now willing to accept the balance. Defendant deposed that he was a labourer with a wife and one child to support, that he some times experienced difficulty in getting work, and often earned only 10s a week. Finally the case was adjourned for a week to allow of defendant endeavouring to procure the balance or otherwise to had sureties for his compliance with any order that the bench might make. Bail allowed, defendant and one surety in the sum of £15 each.

Description: Found Dead.

NEWs has been received in town that Mr. John McSorley, contractor for the conveyance of the Wheeo mail, has been found dead at Grabben Gullen in a paddock belonging to Mr. White. The deceased had been to Goulburn, and was expected home on Monday. The Goulburn police authorities have received no particulars of the occurrence.

Goulburn Evening Penny Post, Thursday 4 July 1889 page 2

CROOKWELL.

(From the Gazette.)

Mr. S. L. Cox, district coroner, held an inquest on the body of Mr. John McSorley, who met his death on Monday night last. The evidence of Mrs. Margaret McSorley, wife of deceased, was to the effect that on Monday last her husband left home with cattle for Goulburn, and she had never seen him alive afterwards. Dr. Fitz-Patrick, Government Medical Officer, made a post-mortem examination of the body and found no external marks of violence, but was of opinion that the cause of death was dislocation of the neck.

Alfred Withers, hotelkeeper, saw deceased on Monday night in company wilth Stephen Clune; they had five or six drinks; McSorley then went after the cattle to put them into a paddock; deceased shortly afterwards came back and witness tried to persuande him to stay, but without avail; deceased said he had to go home, as he had particular business to transact next day.

Stephen Clune stated that deceased and he went into the hotel, and a man named Tully called for drinks; deceased afterwards had some tea; witness brought the cattle back; they were afterwards put into Mr. Tully's paddock; returning to Withers' hotel, he found deceased lying on the road; witness and Withers lifted him on his horse and he accompaniped him on his way home as far as Mr. A. White's; witness tried to persuade deceased to remain at White's all night, but he would not; Clune went with him about 100 yards, and left him at a spot about 70 yards distant from where his body was found. Andrew White's evidence was that yesterday morning while on his way to work he saw a man lying on the track, whom he found to be McSorley; asked Timothy McCormack to convey the intelligence to the police. Constable Blagrave went out and found the body, and arranged for the inquiry under the direction of Sergeant Hurley. The jury found that the deceased died from the effects of a broken neck accidentally received.

NORMAN

From: Bernie Wills
Sent: Monday, 12 June 2017 5:33 AM
Subject: David Norman c. 1835-1855 - was he the brother of William Norman(1832-1893)?

Hello Ian,

I'm unsure if it would be appropriate for me somehow to include this

information about a "David Norman" in the Monaro Pioneers database, so

am content to pass it on for your evaluation. The possible connection is

not of great significance to my interests but sometimes a clue is hard

to bypass.

When reading about William Norman (1832-1893) who migrated to the Colony

with his wife Sarah and son Richard in 1854, I became curious about the

connection with Ashfield in Sydney. As shown in the database, the

passenger list of the ship "Columbia" on which the Normans travelled

refers to a brother of William's named David who resided at Ashfield.

That's what it looks like to me; the image of the list is rather indistinct.

Elsewhere, the infant Richard Norman, son of William and Sarah, is said

to have died at Ashfield in 1855. Curiosity led me yesterday to search

newspaper records on Trove, and I found references to a David Norman,

aged 20, accidentally killed at Newtown in 1855 while working on the

railway line.

David Norman's age and the proximity of Newtown to Ashifield make me

wonder if he could have been the brother of William Norman.

I've attached some details of the newspaper reports of the accidental

death. The victim was initially reported as Daniel Norman, and this name

was repeated in a couple of later press reports (not shown) which seem

to have been copies of the first which appeared in "Empire" on 18 April

1855.

When reporting on 19 April 1855 about the magisterial inquiry into the

accident, "Empire" and "The Sydney Morning Herald" both showed the name

as David Norman, with the SMH's report being the more detailed of the two.

Kind regards,  Bernie Wills.

Hi Bernie,

It is possible that the David Norman you reference was the brother of William but I cannot make that connection without some concrete evidence.  Perhaps a transcript of his death certificate might reveal his parents and thus prove it one way or the other.

Can you please remove the spouse (Charles H Catling) from Mary's page as I have found that while he did marry a Mary A Luther, she was not the above but the daughter of David Peters.

There is a newspaper article on their wedding in the Mudgee Guardian and North-Western Representative, Thursday 9 March 1905 that can be accessed through Trove.

In the meantime I will continue to look for the correct marriage for 'our' Mary.

In 1927, it seems this family was together in Monaro.

Judging from ages, it may be that the last 4 or 5 listed may be children of perhaps the first two people listed?

The questions are: what were their names, and were they all together in 1900 in Monaro?.

J.W. (female) born ca 1867

It is by far the most difficult genealogical tasks I have been asked to deal with. My daughter needs to know the information because of a book she is writing.

Goodness - these people match on many indicators, don't they? How on earth did you find them!

I shall send information to my daughter and see if she agrees this could be the family. They are a little older than the dates I was given, but so close….

I am so grateful, …and impressed.

Thank you so much.
