Subject: Ryrie Family - additional information

Dear Ian,

I am the great great great grandson of Commissary Stewart Ryrie, and today was very pleased to become a member of the Monaro Pioneers website.

I have noticed that information on the page for my great-grandmother Emily Maud Campbell (nee Ryrie) contains no details for my grandmother, her fourth child.

My grandmother was Kathleen Ryrie Campbell, born 9 June 1899.  She married my grandfather, Edmund Strathmore Playfair (born 31 October 1894), on 20 April 1920.  Gran Playfair (Kathleen Ryrie Playfair) died on 23 June 1989 at Lullworth, St Luke’s Hospital, Darlinghurst, Sydney.  There were four children of the marriage (all daughters) and my mother, Wendy Margaret Campbell Williams (nee Playfair) (b 28 Aug 1926) was the third child.

Please let me know if you require further information regarding our branch of the family.

An interesting piece of information is that my cousin, Ian Malcolm Campbell, the son of Malcolm Ryrie Campbell (6th child of Emily Maud) and his wife Sylvia (nee Stewart) – is the direct lineal descendant of Commissary Stewart Ryrie’s first wife, Anne Stewart, whose brother was Lieut. Gov of NSW.

I hope that you will be able to include the information regarding my grandmother on your website. I look forward to hearing from you.

Best regards, James Williams

Hi James,

Thank you for the information.

Regards, Ian

Hi Ian,

Do you know where I could get hold of a copy of “The Ryrie Family” by John Edwards (for purchase)?

Also, will you be updating the Monaro Pioneers website to include the addition of my grandmother?

Many thanks.

Wedding.

A very pretty wedding was celebrated in St. Peter's Church of England on Wednesday last, when Ida Miriam, eldest daughter of Mr and Mrs James Morrow, and Oswald G., only son of Mr and Mrs W. Tortice, were married. The Rev. W. D. Kennedy officiated. The church was beautifully decorated for the occasion by friends of the bride, and there was an unusually large gathering present to witness the ceremony.

Miss L. Bower (cousin of the bride) presided at the organ. The bride, who entered the church on the arm of her cousin, Mr F. F. Bower, looked very dainty in a gown of ivory duchess mousseline and georgette, tastefully trimmed with pearls and touches of mauve. She wore a veil of embroidered tulle and wreath of orange blossoms, and carried a pretty shower bouquet of mandevilleas and sweet peas, the gift of Mrs C. Smith. She also wore a gold wristlet watch and diamond pendant, gifts of the bride groom. The bride's gift to the bridegroom was a gold watch chain. The bridesmaid, Miss Olive Morrow (sister of bride), was daintily dressed in saxe blue georgette, with hat of shrimp and saxe blue, and carried a bouquet of pink carnations with blue streamers.

She also wore a gold wristlet watch, the gift of the bridegroom. Mr W. A. White was best man. During the signing of the register Miss Velistia Ryan impressively sang 'My Crown,' after which Mr F. F. Bower played 'A Perfect Day.' A reception was afterwards held at the residence of the bride's parents, where an elaborate breakfast was partaken of, about 50 guests being present. The tables were attractively decorated with pink and white roses and maiden hair fern.

After the usual toasts the happy couple left by car for an extended honeymoon to the mountains and Tasmania, the bride travelling in a cream costume with hat to tone.

Their future home will be at Lindfield.

The presents were numerous and costly.

Obituary

In the passing of Mrs. Tortice, senr., last Friday morning, aged 70, Candelo lost a highly esteemed lady of long residence. Many of us had known the late Mrs. Tortice from our school days, and will remember her for her cheery disposition and kindliness. Up till a few weeks ago, when she was attacked with heart trouble, she was a remarkably active woman, and her familiar figure will be missed in the community. She was a member of the Atkins family, so well-known in the Wolumla district. Sympathy is expressed for her son and daughter, Mr. Os. Tortice and Mrs. Bower.

The funeral on Saturday was largely attended and a great tribute of the community's respect. The Rev. J. Rose officiated at the grave.

SHEPPEARD

Subject: Charles Fisher Sheppeard

Hello Ian

I came across your site whilst researching Charles Fisher Sheppeard (surname is spelt variously).

He is mentioned in 'The Rammer' - scs.une.edu.au/Bushrangers/rammer.htm

"In the middle of a hot summer's night in mid December 1834, the gang attacked a property at Rock Flat, 15 km south of Cooma. A part owner, Joseph Catterall, and his wife, Georgiana, were there. Georgiana was about seven months pregnant. She was very frightened. The gang took everything of value and destroyed any weapons they did not want. They let the convict overseer,

Charles Fisher Shepherd, keep his "fowling piece" (shotgun), in return for teaching the Rammer to use a compass, but took away all ammunition except birdshot.

The gang returned about dawn, probably intending to whip Shepherd, who had recently taken the law into his own hands and ordered one of his convicts stripped and given 50 lashes with a horsewhip. They may also have wished to punish Shepherd for boasts he had made that he was not afraid of them and would deal with them if they came.

Using his gun charged with birdshot, Shepherd shot the Rammer dead. However, Shepherd was shot several times, beaten unconscious, then shot at close range and left for dead. A neighbour, William Bowman who had a station at Curry Flat, took Shepherd by cart to Goulburn where he eventually recovered."

And a differing version of events here:-

The Discovery of Manaro - "BACK TO COOMA" Felix F Mitchell 1926

"It is clear that in 1834, and probably for some few years previously, settlement was in existence in the neighbourbood of Michelago, for we learn in that year that one, "Jack the Rammer," a bushranger who had been operating in the Manaro district, shot Mr. Charles Fisher Shepherd, the overseer for Mr. Caldwell, of the Michelago Sheep Station. A man named Boyd, who was associated with Jack the Rammer, upon being pursued by the Police, was shot as he was endeavouring to escape by swimming the Snowy River."

Are you able to find any further information on him as to how he came to be in Monaro Plains or where he was born?

I can tell you that later in his life he worked as a Manager for Bing & Boyd and was connected to Colac (Lake Colac as it was known until 1854), Victoria.  I have not been able to establish what business was run by Bing & Boyd, but do wonder if this was an offshoot of Benjamin Boyd's' family.

He was a widower when he married Eliza Evans, also a widower on March 4th, 1849 at St. James Cathedral, Melbourne.

Eliza was 31 years old when she arrived in Melbourne on the ship 'Thetis' in February 1842.  She was previously married to Charles Evans of Manchester and was the daughter of Benjamin Browne of Hornsey, London.

They both died in 1854 - and both deaths are reported in 'The Argus' newspaper.  His headstone inscription says he was aged 60 years.  He died in The Wellington Hotel (aka The Duke of Wellington) in Flinders Street, Melbourne.

Eliza's headstone inscription says she died aged 42 years old.  She was found dead in her bedroom whilst living as a companion to Mrs Anne Cope, wife of Barrister Thomas Cope in Gertrude Street, Fitzroy, Melbourne.  Eliza had a Coronial Inquest which found she had suffered from a Sanguineous apoplexy.

Old Melbourne Cemetery closed in 1854 and the register of burials prior to 1866 was lost or destroyed.  The expansion of Victoria Market in 1923-4 entailed the re-interment of graves with identifying monuments.

Melbourne Cemetery has their remains in the Church of England section common burials section - Charles grave is numbered as 118, Compartment D, he is listed in their records as 53yrs and occupation as Labourer.  Eliza is numbered 28, Compartment A.  She is listed as 45yrs and Widow.

It is highly likely that they were exhumed from Old Melbourne Cemetery and re-interred separately minus their headstone.

Any further information you can provide would be greatly appreciated.

Kind regards, Vanessa Farrell

PS.  I found their broken headstone in the garden of a home I purchased near Wilson's Prom in Victoria.

I believe the Collins Family held a family reunion in 2015 at Candelo.

My husband Max is a member of the family through his mother and we attended the first reunion in 1982.  At that time we bought a book - The Pioneering Collins of the South Coast' of which we had contributed our family lines info.

As Monaro Pioneers holds the family tree and history Patrick and Rachel Collins etc I was wondering if you could put me in contact with a current Collins member who may be able to inform me if the original book from 1982 has been updated with further history on the original family as I would love to purchase a copy.

Thank you in anticipation of your response.

Description: Sudden Death of a Drover.

A man named Stephen Hadlow, employed at Pylara as a boundary rider, died suddenly on Tuesday while driving a mob of stock into Goulburn. He was walking along the road leading his horse near Inveralochy when he was seen to fall to the ground. Another man who happened to be near ran up to see what was the matter, and he found Hadlow quite dead. Deceased was bringing the stock in for Wood and Co. for yesterday's sale. Mr. H. O'Brien, coroner, held a magisterial enquiry on Wednesday morning at Inveralochy House. John Hadlow, brother of the deceased, deposed that his brother was a stockman in the employ of Mr. R. C. Cooper; he was born at Newtown, Syd ney, and was 34 years of age; he was married and had left a wife and two children; he lived at Covan Creek, near Tarago: he had been at Mr. Cooper's for about eight years ; he had had only middling health, and often complained of pains in the stomach, but was never laid up with them. George Wade, a sheep overseer in the employ of Mr. Cooper, deposed that he had known de ceased for about 20 years ; about 12 months ago he complained of pains in his back, and went to a doc tor, and seemed to get all right; on Tuesday the deceased and witness were on their way from Tarago to Goulburn with sheep; they had dinner underneath the Inveralochy Bridge; he appeared to be all right, and ate his dinner with the rest; they had gone about a mile after dinner, when Atkins, another man, sang out--" What's up ? why he's down ;" witnes looked and saw the de ceased on the ground in front of the sheep, with his horse standing near him; witness picked him up, and he gave a couple of gasps and died without speaking. Dr. McKillop, Government medical officer, de posed that he had made a post mortem examina tion of the body, and found that deceased had died from an effusion of blood in the pericardium, caused by the rupture of a blood vessel. Edward Atkins, drover, said he had dinner with deceased, and he then seemed quite well and jolly ; about half a mile from the bridge deceased was walking in front of the sheep leading his horse ; just before he fell he was standing near the fence with his horse, and had his hand in his pocket; a minute or so after witness saw him on the ground and his horse pulling back; when Wade and witness picked him up he was not quite dead, but he never spoke. The coroner's finding was in accordance with the medical testimony.

MRS. ELIZA JANE WOOD

At a quarter to five yesterday morning the death occurred at the residence, "Charlton," of Mrs. Eliza Jane Wood, aged 86 years, one of the oldest and best known identities of the Goulburn district.

Mrs. Wood was born in Monahan, North Ireland, coming to Australia when five years of age. Her husband (the late Mr. John Wood) was born in an adjoining county to Monahan. For over 80 years, Mrs. Wood had resided in the Goulburn district, being married to the late Mr. John Wood in old St. Saviour's Church on December 9, 1853, by Rev. Dean Sowtrby.

The late Mr. Wood was a prosperous grazier and once owned portion of the Inveralochy estate, and later he owned the Jacqua estate, where he died about 40 years ago. Mrs. Wood raised a family of eleven children, four having predeceased her.

She is survived by five sons and two daughters. The sons are Messrs. Robert Alexander, of Jacqua estate, William, auctioneer, Goulburn, J.D. Wood, auctioneer, Moss Vale, Charles Henry, salesman of Pitt Son and Badgery, Sydney, and Albert Edward, salesman of McPherson, Thom and Co., Melbourne.

Hi Ian,

Thanks for taking the time to consider my rather waffly account of the Power family. I have just reviewed the various BDM certificates regarding the Power family and realized that I have made some mistakes. Apologizes!.

This morning, I have read the files on the Power family on your site. Congratulations to one and all. I have attached several BDM certificates in relation to the Power family for your perusal, and hope you do not mind, setting the records straight.

In particular, I am keen to prove beyond reasonable doubt that, Thomas Power husband of Isabella(nee Hastie), according to his death certificate, died at Balairo/Boloro

(?sp)  near Adaminaby NSW, on the 14th of March, 1870 not 1875 as cited by numerous sources.

In fact, according to Trove newspapers, there was a Thomas Power AKA Kerry Tom who died in 1875 in Cooma NSW, who also, is on the NSW death registry. I can see how the two Thomas Power, could get mixed up.

According to Gordon Smiths book An Australian Story 2016.Isabella and Jane West  (nee Power),  state that  Thomas Power and Isabella Hastie meet and marry in Manchester 1828. Apparently, so the story goes, they both originate from the same area of Ireland. Precisely where?

According to several sources, Jane (Thomas and Isabella Power eldest daughter), was born in 1829 in Templemore Ireland (I don't have evidence)suggesting that they have gone back to Ireland for their Honeymoon/birth of their 1st child. Just another piece of a puzzle.

Thanks once again for considering, these possible versions, of dates and events.  I will happily forward on, any other information/ certificates that I come across.

I would be happy to speak and swap notes with anyone researching this family.

Comments (Power, Thomas b. Abt 1807 County Kerry, Ireland d. 1875 Cooma, New South Wales): To whom it may concern.

I have a copy of Thomas Power death certificate 3313/1870. The certificate lists his spouse as Isabella  Hastie, married in Manchester aged 19. At the time of his death only 5 children are alive .William 34, Edward   32,James 29, Jane 37 Martha 19. Males x2, females x4 deseased. He dies at Baliro Baloro These names and DOB line up closely up with NSW bdm records for the children born to Thomas and Isabella. According to Jane West (Thomas and Isabella eldest daughter) born 1829 in Templemore Ireland Co.Tipperary. Thomas was with the 50th Regiment Foot guard. Thomas and family came to Australia via the Hoogly 1834 Thomas in his capacity of soldier/convict guard . Soon after their arrival Thomas was sent to Norfolk Island for a tour of duty. I am not sure how long they were on the island, but it can not have been very long, as Isabella gives birth to William  1835 who dies 1835. The next child is also named William (my GG Grandfather)1835/1836. I have his baptism certicate dated Jan 1837 unfortunately the date of birth is not recorded.I have been able to trace another six children. William Henry Power goes onto marrying Hannah Mary Hogan in Wagga  Wagga 1868.Their first child is William Henry born 1869 in Adaminaby Cooma  The birth certificate lists Isabella Power as the witness.William Henry (father) place of birth Wangle Wogal Nsw?

Thomas James Power (next son, my grand father) is born in 1871 in Alfredtown Wagga Wagga. William Henry Power dies after a lengthy illness, only two years after having purchased the lease of the Prince Alfred hotel Alfredtown. Unfortunately William Henry Power (senior)dies in  his 37th year 1873 (according to grave stone Wagga Wagga cemetary, and family notices)suggesting his year of birth 1835.His poor wife Hannah was 3 months pregnant with their 3rd son ,at the time of William death. Patrick Edward Power was born six moths later 1874.

I have not been able to locate a birth certificate for Patrick or a death certificate for William(senior). Perhaps Hannah was too over whelmed by her husbands death, three small children to care for and a hotel/farm to run? I would be pleased  to forward all certificates for this family. I would enjoy speaking with anyone researching the Power family Cooma Wagga Wagga Thank You for your wonderful site. Look forward to hearing from You.

Subject: Flynn family

Hello Ian

I am seeking any contact information you may have for the family of Denis Flynn and Mary Young.

I am the Great Grandaughter of Mary's sister Bridgid Young. I have been searching for Mary's family for a long time to no avail.

You are probably aware that Mary and Bridgid arrived in Australia as part of the Earl Grey Famine Orphan Scheme, aboard the Thomas Arbuthnot.  I am luck enough to have several copies of the wonderful publication "A Decent set of Girls".

Each year my cousins and I attend the Irish Famine Commemoration at Hyde Park Barracks in Sydney.  I would love to have Mary's family there with us one day.

Brigid married Richard Hart(Harding) and eventually lived at South Wangaratta in Victoria. Her son and my Great Grand Uncle was Stephen Hart, a member of the Kelly Gang.  Her daughter Rachael, married Tom Lloyd, cousin to Ned Kelly and is my Great Grandmother.

Any assistance in contacting Mary's family would be gratefully received.

Your site is wonderful. I am a member of a small local history and heritage group and administer our facebook site. It's all about preserving the memories.

I look forward to hearing from you

kind regards, Noeleen Lloyd

Description: OBITUARY

Mr. W.H. Mackay

The death occurred on June 8th, at his home, 'Brookfield'' ,Wargeila, of Mr. William Henry Mackay, one of the best known graziers in the Yass district, at the age of seventy years. The late Mr. Mackay had been in indifferent health for the past three and a half years.

He was typical of the old pioneering stock, who have made the Yass district renowned for its wool. Born at Derringullen, the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Henry Mackay, he was a son of the soil. From an early age he took a keen interest in pastoral affairs, and that training stood him in good stead in after years, and enabled him to build up some of the finest properties in the district. His first property was 'Brookfield,' originally owned by his father and taken up by deceased about forty years ago, where he made his home. Twenty one years ago he took over 'The Ebbs,' on the Bango road, which was worked in conjunction with 'Brookfield,'' Then eighteen years ago he acquired 'Minting,' adjoining Bango Creek. On tbese properties deceased grew some of the finest super fine wool the State produces. Last year, wool from the Mackay clip brought 120d., top price for the. district in Winchombe Carson's honor roll. In other years, the Mackay wool has annexed similar honours. Deceased concentrated all his energies on wool producing, and took little active interests in town and district affairs, although he was a follower of local sporting fixtures. He was a member of Pride of Yass G.U.O.O.F., Lodge for over forty years. About thirty-nine years ago the deceased married Miss Annie Delaney, daughter of Mrs. Elizabeth Delaney, of Pudman, and the late Michael Delaney.

Besides his wife, he is survived by ten children. They are: Messrs. Claude (Yass), Glen ('Brookfield,'), Miles and Bruce ('Brookfield,') sons; Ida (Mrs. P. R. McGrath, Boorowa), Jean (Mrs. Boucher( Yass), Joan (Mrs Gordon Daniels), Mona (Mrs. R. Rennie, Sydney), Lima (Mrs. J. Thatcher 'The Brook,'), and Nola ('Brooktonfield ). two sisters, Mrs. Coddrington (Mudgee), and Mrs. B. Ryan, (Murrumbateman), and fourteen grand-children, also survive. Four sisters predeceased him. The funeral, which was largely attended, left St. Andrews Presbyterian Church last Wednesday afternoon for the Presbyterian portion' of   the Yass cemetery. Rev H. A. Prenter   officiated at the church and graveside. The pall-bearers were five sons-in-law and a nephew of deceased, Messrs P. R. McGrath, A. Boutcher, G. Daniels, R. Rennie, J. Thatcher, and P. Mundy. Mr. D. L. Lawrence had charge of the arrangements, Mrs. Claude Mackay, of 'Maxville" was unable to attend the funeral, owing to an attack of tonsilitis.
