Hi Ian.

I have noticed there is something on the Monaro Pioneers website relating to William Patterson and Jane Massie who I am a descendent (Great Great Grandparents).

They had a daughter Thomasina (Ina) who is my Great Grandmother and she had a son, Robert Leslie Norman Hayes who is my Grandfather.

The member of the site is Merle Wong and I was hoping to be able to contact if possible to see if there was any other information I could get as I am beginning to tray and trace back as far as I can go on a family tree.

Any assistance would be possible knowing that post was a few years ago.

Dear Maureen

Early History of the Bombala End of the Monaro District

I came across the information you submitted about the Monaro District on this site.  http://www.monaropioneers.com/properties/index.htm

I found it fascinating. I know many of the stations and properties very well.  I was born on Delegate Station in 1949. My family are decended from Robert Campbell, who settled it.

I just wanted to let you know that the dates of acquisition of Delegate Station you list – when it was ‘taken up by Merchant Campbell’ - are not correct.  The original homestead (which is still maintained) was built in 1827.  Campbell sent stock to Delegate from his properties on the Limestone Plains (Canberra) for summer pasture. The full story of Delegate is detailed in 'The Spirit of Wharf House’ by Charles Newman (Angis & Robertson 1961).  There are also some details here https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Delegate,_New_South_Wales

Thank you Maureen,

HARTIGAN

Sent: Tuesday, 24 October 2017 2:16 PM
Subject: Correction to be made to record for Bridget Hartigan (1820 - 1907)

Hi Ian,

I have a further correction to be made to Bridget Hartigan (1820 - 1907).

Bridget's record currently states: Family 2 - McCarthy, Unknown.  This is incorrect.  There is no evidence for it that I have seen.

Bridget was listed as a widow at the time of her marriage to Edward Moore in 1845.  There is no record of her being married before, but she did already have a child. Bridget Hartigan and John Keleher were listed as the parents of Michael Keleher, born 30 June 1841, at his baptism at St Mary's Cathedral on 9 July 1841.  NSW BDM Baptism: 1497 Vol: 133.

Bridget Hartigan and John Kellerhan were given as the parents of Michael Kellerhan on Michael's death certificate, which was registered by Michael's half brother, Edward Moore.  NSW BDM: 10871/1884.

I have attached it here.  Michael died at Dry Plain, where he, and many of the Moores, were farmers.

The spelling of Michael's name varies from Keleher/Kelliham/Kellahan/Kellerhan.

Michael is already listed on the Monaro Pioneers site as Michael Kellahan. Person ID: I70254.  Could you please link Michael and his family to Bridget Hartigan's record?

I made this link through Ancestry DNA, which found an "extremely confident" match between myself and a descendant of Michael Kellerhan.  Our shared ancestor is Bridget Hartigan.  I think the Kellerhan side of the family knew of the connection, but from what I can see, the Moore descendants (myself included) were not aware.

Thank you, Ian.

Kind regards,  Janise Farrell

Thank you Janise,

Description: LAKE BATHURST. A PRETTY WEDDING.

The township of Lake Bathurst was on Thurs day enlivened by an occurrence of unusual interest the wedding of Miss Jennie Reynolds, the fourth daughter of Mr Walter Reynolds, of Lake Bathurst. The young lady was united in wedlock to Mr Reinhold Shadler, youngest son of Mr A. Shadler, of " Altona House," North Sydney. The day was beautifully fine, as always becomes a bridal occasion, and the local and general good wishes of the inhabitants of the district were evidenced by the congregation that assembled at St. John's Church, where the ceremony took place. The bride was attired in a very pretty cream costume, with the orthodox wreath and veil, and carried an exquisite bouquet supplied by Searle and Sons, Sydney, who also supplied the bouquets to the brides maids. The bridegroom, with his best man, Mr. E. Roberts, of Mayfield, having taken up his posi. tion before the officiating clergyman, Rev. P. M. Flinn, B.A., was not kept long in waiting when the bride arrived, leaning on her father's arm and followed by three young bridesmaids, namely, Miss Millicent Reynolds and the Misses Elsa and Greta Hale, from Sydney, nieces of the bridegroom. Behind the best man stood the groomsmen, Mr. W. Reynolds, jun., and Master Marco Shadler. The church had been very tastefully decorated by Miss Shadier, sister to the bridegroom, assisted by Mr. George Reynolds. As music greeted the entrance of the bride to the church, so the strains of the " Wedding March," played by Miss Amy Reynolds, were heard at the close of the service. The wedding party, with friends, drove to the house of the bride's parents to partake of the wedding breakfast. The celebrant of the marriage, the incumbent (the Rev. P. M. Flinn), according to usual custom, proposed the bride's health, and in doing so said that the parish was losing an efficient member of their choir, a most useful Sunday-school teacher, and one of nature's own gentlewomen, who left behind an example of goodness that might be usefully imitated.

Whate'ver it be it seems to me,

'Tis only noble to be good ;

Kind hearts ars more than coronets

And simple faith than Norman blood.

The bridegroom was fortunate in securing a young lady who was a member of a family the most distinctly useful in this district both as citizens and church people. No family here in this countryside had a better or more respectable record than that of Mr. and Mrs. Walter Reynolds. The bride also was fortunate in winning by her charms the heart of a most many and desirable bridegroom. The bridegroom responded in suitable terms for his bride and self. The bridesmaids were not forgotten by the best man, Mr. Roberts, who as an eligible bachelor referred to their winning ways. Mr. W. Reynolds, jun., responded. Mr. George Reynolds next proposed the health of the bridegroom's father, Mr. A. Shadler, whom they were all delighted to welcome amongst them and who, he hoped, would in the future be able to look back with pleasure on the union of that morning. Mr. Shadler, senr., who, as a Sydney merchant of nearly half a century's duration, is a practised public speaker, replied most appropriately. He said he was glad to make the acquaintance of a household where he saw so much domestic affection, so much honest and successful industry, so much culture and refinement, and where all the young members reflected such credit on good and kind parents, whose health he now proposed with all his heart, believing that the union of the two families would contribute to the lasting pleasure of both. Mr. Reynolds suitably responded for Mrs. Reynolds and himself. The toast of the visitors and ladies, mentioning the names of Miss Shadler and Mrs. Hale, brought the very pleasant party gathering to a close. The happy pair drove off to " Arnprior," the residence of the bridegroom. The bride was the recipient of many valuable and useful presents from her many friends. Your correspondent, who seldom sees such beautiful dresses as those worn on the occasion, is entirely unequal to the task of describing them. Suffice it to say that Miss Shadier, Mrs. Hale, and the Misses Reynolds wore dresses that seemed chaste, exquisite, good, and beautiful.-Correspondennt.

Description: DEATH OF MAJOR SHADLER.

The residents of Goulburn and district received quite a shock on Saturday morning when they heard that Major Reinhold ShadIer, Militia Adjutant of the 3rd Australian Light Horse, had died the previous day at the Wahroonga Sanatorium from Bright's disease. Major Shadler went to the institution for treatment on 7th November, and his sudden decease was totally unexpected. He was a son of the late Mr. Shadler, the well known caterer of Sydney, and leaves a widow and three children-two boys and a girl aged 8, 6, and 3 respectively.

The deceased was for thirteen years in the Sydney Lancers, and joined the Australian Horse when it was first formed. He was a squadron quartermaster, and was a member of the Braidwood troop. He went to South Africa with the last contingent, but peace had been declared before the ship arrived.

For several years deceased resided at Arn prior, in the Braidwood district. Four years ago he took up his residence near Goulburn, where he had since lived.

The body was brought to Goulburn by the midnight train on Saturday, and taken to St. Saviour's Cathedral, the Union Jack being placed over the coffin. The funeral, which was carried out with military honours, was held yesterday, the remains being interred in the new general cemetery. At 2 p.m. a private service was held at the Cathedral, and at 2.45 the coffin was conveyed to the hearse , the pall bearers being Col. Ryrie, Capts. McMaster, Holdorf, and Rogerson, and Lieuts. Fitzgerald, Chis. holm, Beegling, and Betts.

On the coffin were the Union Jack and deceased's sword and hat. The procession, which formed a sad and imposing sight, moved off from the Cathedral at 3o'clock, headed by a firing party under Capt. Wedd. Then came the A.H. Band under Bandmaster Cody, the hearse, the deceased's horse (led by two troopers), his late master's boots being reversed in the stirrups, the chief mourners, members of the Australian Horse and G Company, and a large number of the general public. The band played the Dead March on route, and the streets were lined with people. The scene wans a very impressive one. On arrival at the burial ground the coffin was borne by the pall bearers to the graveside. Ven. Arch deacon Bartlett then read the burial service, the proceedinge being marked by the greatest solemnity. At the conclusion of the service Capt. Wedd took charge of the firing party and three vollies were fired over the grave. The trumpeters having sounded The Last Post, the parade was re-formed and marched back to town. There was a large attendance at the burial ground, and some thousands lined the route along which the cortege passed. Colonel Ryie received a telegram from the Inspector- General, Major- General Hoad, asking him to convey his sincere sympathy to deceased's widow. A large number of, beautiful wreaths were sent, including one each from the regimental staff, the militia staff, and Goulburn half squadron. The funeral arrangements were satisfantorily carried out by Mr. R. S. Craig.

Hello Ian

I've been trying to establish Charlotte Sproats (nee Barber) exact birth date and place. MP has 10 Apr 1863 at Hill End which I am not sure how this was obtained.  I have Her Marriage details now and she states she was born at Bega NSW and was 16 yrs at the time of her marriage to Obadiah. So that could be 1864 but not sure. The place born is definitely Bega not Hill End.

I never knew the exact birth date of my Great Grandmother Ann Elizabeth Sproats (daughter of Charlotte) so I have her details now and the exact date is 10 Aug 1883 and her birth place was Nelson, near Tanja/Wapengo etc.

A piece of interest on Christopher Sproats from Trove... (I need to research this some more but the dates of his arrival here, 1858, agree with the end of the Crimean war in 1856)

It is not generally known that the late Mr. Christopher Sproats was a Crimean veteran. He came of a rare fighting family, three of his brothers being killed in the Indian mutiny.''

MURPHY-CHALKER.  St Patrick's Church, Picton, was the scene of a pretty wedding on Saturday, 16th July, when Lilly, the daughter of Mrs A A Chalker, of Bargo, late Bemboka, was married to Reginald, the son of the late Albert Murphy and Mrs Murphy, of Bargo, late Rocky Plain.  The Rev Father Fitzpatrick officiated.  The bride, who was escorted to the altar by her father, was charmingly attired in white crepe-de-chine, trimmed with silver lace, with silver shoes to match.  She wore a coronet of orange blossoms over a tulle veil, and carried a bouquet of white carnations and roses.  Miss Nellie Chalker, sister of bride, acted as bridesmaid.  She wore a dainty frock of apricot crepe-de-chine, and hat of black georgette.  Mr Eric Murphy, of Tumbarumba, brother of the bridegroom, acted as best man.  The happy couple were entertained by the bride's mother at her residence, Dymond-street, Bargo.  At the reception, about 100 guests sat down, and the usual toasts were honoured.  Their future residence will be Bargo.

Subject: [SPAM] Bega places of births 1929 and 1934

Hello Ian

I have just read with interest the Monaro Pioneers information sheet and newsletter which has been forwarded by our secretary of the Blue Mountains Family History Group.

My grandmother Alice Doyle (nee McCloy) had stated on information for her that she was born in Monaro and I had a chase to try and find her however in the end it turned out she was born in Shellharbour – this was in the mid to late 1880’s.

My father Patrick Doyle was born in Kiah in 1904.

We are trying to find out the actual building in Bega where my two brothers were born i.e. James Patrick Doyle born 1929 in Bega and Kevin Joseph Doyle born 1934 in Bega.  Our brother James passed away a few years ago however Kevin and I had a trip a few years ago and tried to find out through Bega Council and other avenues where they were actually born.  Someone at the Pambula Family History Society thought that the timing of the births would have coincided with private hospitals as the Bega Hospital was not open at that time.  Could you suggest how we might find out?

My parents Patrick and Ann Doyle were married in January 1929 in Sydney and lived on the family property at Kiah for a few years and had association with the McMahon families who finally bought the property from my father’s sister Catherine (Kate) (nee Doyle) Roberts or McMaster.

Time has passed all too quickly in trying to find some family history of this area and I would appreciate any information you could give me to guide me in these searches.

Thank you, Kathleen Doyle

Hi Kathleen,

You have already tried all the resources I could suggest.  Birth certificates are perhaps your next best alternative.

Regards, Ian

BURNETT

From: Liz Smit
Sent: Monday, 16 October 2017 5:05 PM
Subject: Andrew Aitcheson Burnet ID I124204

Date of arrival for 7 of his children (and 1 daughter-in-law)

:  22 April 1851 on “Ann Thompson” after father Andrew Aitcheson Burnett applied in 1847 to have his children join him. His wife/their mother, Jean nee Hamilton had died  and was buried 24 June 1846 in Haddington, Scotland (Pauper; cause of death Consumption)

Above shows Marion (wife of Walter Andrew Burnett); Walter Andrew; Andrew: Henry; George Hay; Robert Hunter; John Neilson (and next page lists) Jessie Burnett

Following is copy of death certificate for Andrew Aitcheson Burnett.

He died at Stoney Creek (not Mogilla).

He was buried in the Old Cemetery, Bega. (there is a handwritten notation on the Corridgeree cemetery list held at Bega HS ... however correspondence with the former President, who was present on “Corridgeree” the day the original list of headstones was compiled, confirms that Andrew was not buried there.)

Of the family, only Andrew Aitcheson Burnet and his two sons Robert Hunter Burnett and John Neilson Burnett lived in Bega (1850s/60s). Do you want any details (death dates, spouses etc) of Andrew’s children who did not come to NSW?

I also make note that the family surname was spelt with one ‘t’ at the end  ie  Burnet, in Scotland.  It was in Australia that an extra ‘t’ was added. The family of Walter Andrew (Bendigo, Vic) retained the Scottish spelling.

Thanks very much,  Liz Smit

Thank you Liz,

I would be happy to add the details of all of Andrew’s children if you can provide them.

Regards, Ian

SPROATS/BARBER

From: Gary McKinnon
Sent: Saturday, 7 October 2017 9:54 AM
Subject: Sproats and Barber Families

Hello Ian

I recently discovered and gained access to The Monaro Pioneers site (yesterday in fact). My interest is in the Sproats and Barber families who were in the Monaro and Bega areas. The site confirmed some names I have in my Legacy database and provided me more which I was unaware existed. I would like to contribute some names which are not included in the MP site. As a starter I have attached two descendant reports from my Legacy database. I am descended from Sproats and Barber on my mother's side Lorna McKinnon (nee Thompson, deceased).

I also noted that the site was collecting Boer War participant names. My Great Grandfather Stanley Australia Yarrow was in that campaign. I can

provide more detail on that. Also Stanley's father Frederick Geary Yarrow married (his second wife) the widow Mary Ann Wise (nee Pryor/Prior). On the MP database it says Wise, I used her maiden name Pryor on my Legacy database. Not sure which is the correct protocol.

Anyhow, please advise me the preferred format to provide family details for the MP database. I also have digital photos of several of these family members which I highly value. The Christpoher Sproats photo and his wife in a framed wall picture was identified by my mother when she visited the Bega Museum many years ago and the staff were delighted as they had no idea who they were.

So I will look forward to your reply,

regards, gary mckinnon

Hi Gary,

Thank you for the information.  I am happy to accept additional information in any format convenient to you. I would also gladly accept copies of any photos of individuals in our database.

Regards, Ian

Hello Ian

If I'm not mistaken you have loaded the data I sent you recently, talk about efficient.

The details of my Great Grandfather's service record are...

STANLEY AUSTRALIA YARROW
Service Number:     1142
Rank:     Trooper
Unit:     3rd New South Wales Mounted Rifles
Conflict:     South Africa, 1899-1902 (Boer War)
Native place:     New South Wales, Australia

Discharge Date: 12 June 1902

Medals, Honours, Awards:
Queen's South Africa Medal (5 bars)
Cape Colony, Orange Free State, Transvaal, South Africa 1901, South Africa 1902

Just a note about his father, his second name spelling is Frederick Geary Yarrow, not Gary. I detected your deliberate mistake to see if I was checking. It's definitely Geary (his mother's maiden name) as I have evidence to support that. BDM says Gary, incorrectly.

I cannot find Stanley Australia Yarrow's (Snr) wide Charlotte Sproats, although I have several details I see MP has her birth day and month which I do not. Does that come from the person stated as supplier Shirley Sproats and should I contact her for corroboration  as per your note contacting them in the first instance. I do not see a contact name for Barber.

I clicked the media tab to search for any photos of Sproats or Barber but I only get a blank page problem/no ? I will contribute photos but I thought I would check was there first (in case I might embarrass myself)

regards, gary
