Description: I obtained the wedding certificate for this wedding. It states that Elizabeth 'Batch' (no Mary) married John Watkins Senior (widower) on 22 April 1879 at  Lake Plains Cootalantra  (BDM 2819/1879) with the rites of the Church of England.

Elizabeth is listed as a spinster. John Watkins Snr died 9 April 1884.

I also found a Trove article from Sydney Morning Herald, Sat 17th October 1896 -page 3 (I have a downloaded copy) where  this Elizabeth leaves her estate as a widower to a Mr John Wagner. John Wagner died at Coolringdon in May 1897. Why would she do that ?- Another family tree has unconfirmed details that Elizabeth wagner died on 30 Sep 1996. John Wagner is my forefather, I am a grandson of William Thomas Wagner, William was a child of Charles Henry Wagner & Sarah Pegram.

BDM (NSW-QLD-VIC-SA) have no death records for Elizabeth Wagner in the 1890 to 1900 area, only John Wagner. John Wagner had senility in his later years & was the same age  as John Watkins Senior, perhaps she separated from John Wagner, it is my strong opinion that John Watkins Senior actually married Elizabeth Wagner (nee Burch-sounds like Batch ). Birth certificates of Louis Wagner & his sister Bertha (Martha) Wagner state that Elizabeth was first married in Germany as Elizabeth Burch in about 1855 -in Wurttemberg Germany- just before sailing to Australia. Perhaps back then there was not the need to prove you were a spinster when marrying (or  remarrying )

My other suggestion is that Aston James Watkins did not marry Elizabeth Batch ( as per the details on the wedding certificate ). If anyone has details of Elizabeth Wagner death details I would be pleased to hear from you. I have had searches done at St Patricks Catholic Church in Queanbeyan with no results, nor with the Monaro Cooma Shire Council (Noelene Whiting was extremely helpful ).This is probably why BDM can't find her , I will now start searching for the death details of Elizabeth Watkins. I have created the Wagner Family tree at the My Heritage website -created Oct 2016.  Thank you for your knowledge and wonderful Monaro  Pioneers site, regards,  Warren .  Tel : 0408 210 888.

P.S. I can forward you a download copy of the wedding certificate & a copy of the Trove SMH 1896 probation article of Elizabeth Watkins.

Warren Wagner

Hi Warren,

Thank you for the information, Elizabeth Batch (Burch) may well have used that name to disguise the fact she was still married to John Wagner?  I will change our records to show Elizabeth Wagner nee Burch married John Watkins.  The NSW BDM index shows Elizabeth Watkins died in 1896 Cooma (13240/1896).

Yes please, I would definitely appreciate a copy of the marriage certificate and the trove article

Regards, Ian

Good morning Ian & David,

Thanks for the very quick response to my suggestions.

Please do not amend the entry for the marriage of Elizabeth Batch to Aston James Watkins in 1897 just yet.

After sending you the message yesterday, I read your history of John Watkins Snr & Ann Fraser, I also saw the photo that you have on your site, of their shared headstone, provided by the family members of their daughter Ann Watkins. I would not wish to upset the Watkins Family's precious memories of  John & Ann Watkins.

For whatever reason for marrying , if this is Elizabeth Wagner nee Burch, she would have had John Wagner JUNIOR (Jnr) with her, he being aged about 7 years at the time of the wedding. I realise John Wagner Snr was struggling to make ends meet & to provide, having arrived in Australia from Germany with very little- & with their first child Charles Henry Wagner with them.

As you will see on their wedding cert. BDM 2819/1879:  it shows Elizabeth Batch  & John Watkins SENIOR (Snr) in the presence of the officiating minister (his name appears twice) & ANN WATKINS ( I am assuming this is his daughter).

Neither John or Elizabeth's age are mentioned ( ND: not discussed ?/not divulged? ), John Snr is mentioned as a Free Selector  & a Widower.

Neither John Watkins Snr or Elizabeth Batch signed in their own hand.

I know that they stayed married until John Watkins Snr had his fateful horse injury.

My guess is that the John Wagner mentioned in the SMH Trove Probate article in 1896 is meant to be her son John Wagner Jnr, who would have been about 24 when Elizabeth died at about age 64, he probably cared for her in her later years (John Wagner Jnr did die in Kogarah & must have had a family as the Trove funeral notice for him states so).

Yesterday, I  ordered the death cert.  for Elizabeth Watkins  13240/1896, although it says no Mother or Father name listed for her ( as with all of the other certs. that mention Elizabeth Wagner (nee Burch & also Birch), it may confirm her country of birth & any children she may have had.

I would like to send you a copy of the death cert. when it arrives.

Then, if it turns out to be that Elizabeth Wagner (nee Burch) did sneakily & possibly unlawfully marry John Watkins Snr for comfort & convenience for both,( after a period of separation from John Wagner Snr ) there is still NO NEED to place her with John Watkins Snr  on your group sheet, but it would mean deleting the link with Aston James Watkins. We also know that the John Watkins mentioned is not John Watkins JUNIOR (jnr).

This way , our family has the correct knowledge of the final resting place of our Elizabeth & the Watkins Family won't have their treasured family memories tarnished or damaged.

Not everything has to be listed on the Monaro Pioneers Website.

Finally, I will attach some camera pics of their wedding cert. now  & will send a scanned copy when my scanner is repaired. I will also attach some certs. & articles relating to John Wagner JNR & of his elder sister Bertha ( referred to as Martha in later times ) she was John & Elizabeth Wagner's first born child in Australia, along with the death cert. for John Wagner SNR.

Regards, Warren.

P.S. from WARREN WAGNER.

Ian,

I mentioned in my message, that on the wedding certificate it stated ND for the ages, I think I am wrong. Having read the certificate again just now, the stylising of the W in widower is similar to that in the Age section, so I'm guessing that it is a shortening  of W ithel D (witheld) & the W in Watkins is different because it crosses the T in Watkins.  Calligraphy deciphering is probably best left to someone like you who specialises in antiquated writings in documents.

Cheers, Woz.

Hi Warren,

Thank you for the copies of the certificates and newspaper reports.

I don’t believe that Charles Wagner, son of John and Elizabeth, was called Charles Henry nor do I think he is the one shown on the Death Certificate you provided.  I think Charles Wagner died on the 5th November 1939 in Queanbeyan and is buried in the Queanbeyan Riverside Cemetery.  He certainly could not have married Annie Doncaster in 1893 as he was still having children with Sarah Pegram until 1902 in Cooma.

Regards, Ian

The Kyogle Examiner (NSW : 1912; 1914 - 1915; 1917 - 1954) Tuesday 17 January 1928 p 3 Article

PARKER-GORDON.

A very pretty wedding was celebrated in St. James Church, Kyogle, December 21st, by the Rev. E. H. Shaw, the contracting parties being Mr. E. Parker, second son of Mr. Wm. Parker and the late Mrs. Parker, of Tenterfield, and Miss Ella Gordon, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. R. Gordon, of Grevillia. Mrs. Shaw presided at the organ and rendered music suit able to the occasion. Mr. Charles Mulvena attended the bridegroom as best man, and Miss Pearl Gordon accompanied her sister as bridesmaid.

The bride, who was tastefully attired in a pretty frock of ivory mariette, trimmed with insertion and lace, also wore the customary wreath and veil, (kindly lent by Mrs. B. Ellis, of Omagh road, Kyogle). Her bouquet was of cream roses and ferns, tied with satin streamers. The bridesmaid was attired in deep cream crepe de chene, with hand-made posies. Her pale blue hat was trimmed with hand-made flowers. After the ceremony the company adjourned to the home of the bride's sister, Mrs. J. V. Slattery, where the reception was held, and at which the customary toasts were honored. Later the happy couple left by car en route to Tenterfield and Toowoomba, where the honeymoon was

spent.

Description: I propose that Robert Chipp THOMPSON is NOT the man who married Helen HOLLAND.

Robert Chipp THOMPSON's death certificate mentions only one wife, Jane SEWELL.

I believe Helen married Robert THOMPSON who was born c.1832 and died January 23 1882 at Bunyan near Cooma.

His death notice says he left a wife and 2 children, which matches the children Helen had at the time. I also believe she was pregnant at the time he died.

She married John LECOUNT 2 years later in 1884 under the name HOLLAND.

SPROATS/BARBER

From: Shirley Ann Sproats
Sent: Monday, 20 November 2017 4:47 PM
Subject: [SPAM] Sproats/Barber

Hello Ian

I meant to reply sooner to the contribution and queries of Gary McKinnon re the above but somehow overlooked until now.

Gary was looking for the birth details of his ancestor, Charlotte Barber and her daughter Ann Elizabeth Sproats – but on a further read he has now found them on the MP site. I believe I supplied that information. I have Charlotte born in Bega on 10 April 1863 and dying at 153 Enmore Rd, Enmore on 30 Aug 1914 with daughter, Ann Elizabeth Sproats born 10 August 1883 at Wapengo near Bega.

Also, it is interesting that Gary too found the article from a memorial service held in the honour of Christopher Sproats that he was a Crimean veteran and had three brothers killed in the Indian mutiny. I have tried to research this “fact” and must get back to it. I have done a lot of research back into England about the Sproats’ ancestors and that is contained in a book I published on the Sproats – I can’t find the burial records for 2 of Christopher’s brothers with a question mark still over a 3rd so at this stage these might be the 3 brothers!

There is a chapter on Obadiah and Charlotte in the Sproats’ book. Please give Gary my email details.

I have been busy the past couple of years researching and writing a book on the Hergenhan of Bega from which I am descended – a Hergenhan married a Sproats. I have had wonderful research done by a professional in Germany that is incorporated into the book. I am hoping to publish early next year.

Thank you for the ongoing dedication to the MP site – it is simply wonderful.

Best wishes,   Shirley Sproats

Thank you Shirley, I have copied Gary on this email and hope your connection is fruitfull.

Regards, Ian

Hello Shirley (and thank you Ian for Shirley's contact)

When I found the MP site a few months ago I had a lot more information to digest with that of my own. It was a welcome piece of new knowledge and thanks to yourself and other contributors to the site. It filled in a few gaps and taught me a lot about life in those times (eg as a Gold Miner in Hill End where I have been before) and in the  families movements. I have Charlotte and Annie's details now and that was my main mission but discovered all the extras of their ancestors thanks to MP/yourself. I would be pleased if you wanted to share any further Sproats/Barber information. I have been told stories of Obadiah gambling the family house away and leaving Charlotte and the children to fend for themselves. Obadiah went to NZ to work as I have postcards written to Annie by him but not sure why he went there. I think it was after Charlotte had died. Anyhow any new information would be much appreciated.

regards, gary

FLEMING

Subject: Delegate Station - the Fleming Reminiscences

Hi Ian

Just to say that I would like to contact Charles Jefferies if possible.  The document he is referring to is what I've called "The Fleming / McKay Reminiscences".  The original data was collected by Henry Edwards of Burnima from Thomas Fleming (not sure of the date, late 19C, I believe, as he was living at my g.g. grandfather's at the time).  It's a (more or less) primary source, and actually very useful in local history as most of the facts are verifiable ... as long as you mentally eliminate the "1833" date.  So, it's not "amendable" as such, being a document in its own right.

The "1833" date comes from the fact that Fleming arrived at Bukalong with Duncan MacFarlane in that year, so for him the "beginning of the Monaro" = 1833.

I have, however, found further primary evidence that this date is actually correct for Tombong, and in some ways, Delegate.

This has left me in a bit of a dilemma, as it's now quite unclear as to who actually established Delegate Station; previously, it was assumed that the information in Claire Schofield's book, Bombala Hub of the Southern Monaro (which she partly took from Fleming) was correct.  However, with this new evidence, it would seem that someone else, probably James Ainslie, was responsible for the first settlement at Delegate, not James MacFarlane, John McLaren & Charles Wright as previously imagined.  I'm not disputing the 1827 - 8 date for the establishment of Delegate, just who actually did the establishing.  It can't have been "MacFarlane, McLaren & Wright" as "Wright" was not in the Colony at the time.

I will be presenting this new evidence at a talk / outing which is being held by the Bombala Historical Society in November on the history of Tombong.

Cheers & thanks for the amazing resource you maintain,   Frances Ingram

Hi Frances,

We don’t have the email address you want as the original message was sent to Maureen McGee.  I have included her address so that you can contact her and hopefully Charles Jennings as a result.

Dear Maureen

Early History of the Bombala End of the Monaro District

I came across the information you submitted about the Monaro District on this site.  http://www.monaropioneers.com/properties/index.htm

I found it fascinating. I know many of the stations and properties very well.  I was born on Delegate Station in 1949. My family are decended from Robert Campbell, who settled it.

I just wanted to let you know that the dates of acquisition of Delegate Station you list – when it was ‘taken up by Merchant Campbell’ - are not correct.  The original homestead (which is still maintained) was built in 1827.  Campbell sent stock to Delegate from his properties on the Limestone Plains (Canberra) for summer pasture. The full story of Delegate is detailed in 'The Spirit of Wharf House’ by Charles Newman (Angis & Robertson 1961).  There are also some details here https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Delegate,_New_South_Wales

Kind regards, Charles Jennings

Thank you Maureen,

Regards, Ian
