Thanks both – Would you be prepared to put something in your newsletter asking any Oldfield or Rawling descendants to contact me?

Something like:

Roberta Muir (descendant of Jospeh Matthew Oldfield and Elizabeth Rawlings) would like to make contact with any other Oldfield/Rawling descendants keen to exchange family information, photos and documents. She can be contacted at Roberta@food-wine-travel.com

Not sure if you publish these sort of callouts, but if you can I’d be most grateful

R!

Description: Pride Doesn't Fade For 96 Year Old Rhona

Author rabbitohs.com.au Sat 5 Aug 2017

96-year old Rabbitohs fan Rhona Jeffries can't see or hear too well anymore so finds it difficult to watch her Rabbitohs when they play, but that hasn't stemmed the passion the Bega nonagenarian has when it comes to her 'Bunnies'.

Born in 1921, Rhona has lived to experience an incredible 17 Souths Premierships in her life. Thankfully, her eyesight and hearing was good enough to enjoy every minute of our most recent 2014 win which she celebrated in style, telling the Bega District News just prior to the game her plans to watch it:

"I'll be sitting here and watching the game with a stubby of beer. In fact, I might even have two! Go the Rabbitohs," she said before kick-off in 2014.

It's safe to say she probably decided to have two after full time of the drought-breaking win.

Rhona has lived her whole life in Bega and began following Souths when she was a 14-year old girl growing up in the south-east, New South Wales township. She started following the team in 1935 because they wore the same Red and Green as the local Bega football Club at the time.

Earlier this week Rhona was admitted to a nusing home after several falls but was determined to bring with her 82 years worth of Rabbitohs memorabilia she has collected. This left daughter Jan Jeffries a big job this weekend of packing and moving Rhona's precious Rabbitohs cargo - although Jan and husband Jeff were happy to oblige!

Whilst Rhona can't see or hear her Rabbitohs games each week, she always looks forward to Jan's update on how the team is going.

Maybe she'll have another two beers when she hears about Friday night's result!

The Rabbitohs family are lucky to have fans like Rhona and wish her and family all the best!

WEDDING BELLS

Kite - Jensen

A pretty wedding was solemnised at the Methodist Church, Barcaldine, on July 6, when Daphne, elder daughter of Mr and Mrs G Jensen, Gidyea Street, Barcaldine, and Bruce William John Kite, son of Mrs C. Cootes, Bombala, NSW, and the late Mr Arthur Kite, exchanged marriage vows. The Rev. Mitchell Officiated.

Entering the church escorted by her father, the bride looked becoming in her gown of alecon white lace over satin. The bodice was apliqued on to a sheer yoke with a high rounded neckline. The back was trimmed with satin buttons and loops and was finished at the waist with a bustle bow. The long tight sleeves were pointed over the wrists and the fully gathered skirt was caught up in front and adorned with sprigs of orange blossoms revealing panels of tiny frills. It extended into a long graceful train which was edged with a frill of pleated net. Her billowy tulle veil was mounted on to a coronet trimmed with orange blossom and she carried a dainty bouquet of roses ar- ranged with satin streamers. On leaving the church she was presented with two satin horse-shoes by her nephew, Trevor Jensen and her cousin, Lynette Mcinnes. For something "borrowed" she wore a triple string of pearls, loaned by her aunt, Mrs C. Jensen.

The bridesmaids, Misses Mary and Margaret Plumb, were frocked alike in blue all-over lace over taffeta. The bodices were fashioned with sweetheart necklines and were gathered into a shaped band at the waist. The steeves were short and puffed and the fully-flared skirts were finished with a panel of frills down the centre front. They wore blue coronets trimmed with red velvet flow- ers and veiling and they car- ried blue lace muffs trimmed with red velvet flowers and ribbon.

Miss Valma Jensen, sister of the bride, attended as flower girl. She wore a frock of daffo- dil organza with a heart-shaped neckline and puffed sleeves trimmed with tiny frills. The fully-flared skirt featured cowled panels on the hips and dainty frills finishing at the waist with a bustle bow. She wore a pleated halo of silk tulle and mittens to tone. Her gold basket was filled with daffodils and red roses.

The bridegroom was attended by Mr Cecil Jensen as best man and Mr T. Welsh was groomsman. During the signing of the register, Miss Thersy Colman rendered a solo, "O Promise Me".

The reception was held in the supper room of the Shire Hall which had been decorated with blue and lemon streamers and lovely flowers by Mrs C. Jensen, who was assisted by Miss Daphne Mitchell and many other friends. The guests were received by the bride's mother, who wore a frock of aqua blue crepe studded in gold. She added accessories of penny tan and wore a corsage of sweetpeas to tone with her frock. She was assisted by the bridegroom's mother, who chose rust embroidered georgette with a shoulder spray of sweetpeas and white accessories. Pride of place was accorded the three tiered wedding cake, made by the bride's mother and grand- mother, Mrs J. Mcinnes and iced by Mrs A. Meacham.

On leaving for the honeymoon, which will be spent is Brisbane, the bride wore a midnight blue crepe romaine suit and junior blue accents.- Barcaldine correspondent.

Description: Eden Magnet (NSW) November 2, 2017

An unfortunate error appeared in today's published funeral announcements. The notice for Maree McDonald should read:

Maree's funeral will be held on Friday 3 November, 11am, at Eden Memorial Gardens followed by a celebration of her life.

Eden Magnet (NSW) February 5, 2018

Obituary: Eden’s Maree McDonald is remembered by her daughter as a devoted mother and friend.

Elizabeth (Libby) Bates

The sudden and unexpected passing of Maree McDonald occurred on October 24, 2017. Maree was a very well known and respected Eden resident.

Maree was born in Melbourne on August, 2 1941, to parents Olive Lesley and Jack Maxwell Heather. She was the first of three daughters, followed by Janice and then Jackie.

When she was around four years old, her parents moved to Eden with her and her siblings when their father started work on the fishing boats and in the local club.

Her parents later separated, and then Ollie met and married Artie Veigel. Together they had Maree’s baby sister Kerrie.

Maree enjoyed going to dances/balls at Kiah hall, Wyndham and the old silent movie cinemas in Eden along with looking after siblings while her mother worked.

Maree met Walter William McDonald known as Bill and they married on December 22, 1961 at Christ Church Pambula NSW.

They moved to Towamba where they lived for around eight years.

It was a very hard life living in Towamba for mum with no licence. Mum had to rely on others to get supplies or take her in town.

She also had to cut wood to keep the wood stove going, to cook our meals and to put boilers on for hot water for baby bottles. Mum did the washing up and the laundry all by hand and carried the boilers to pour our baths etc. There was no electricity. She used a kerosene lantern for lighting.

Son Peter was born April 1962 and daughter Elizabeth was born May 1969, they then moved into Rodd Street Eden around 1971.

Maree worked many different jobs. She worked at the Hotel Australasia in both the kitchen and restaurant. When she moved from Towamba to Eden around 1973, Maree started working at Heinz Cannery.

She was at the cannery for many years, until a back injury forced her to stop work in about 1984-1985.

SHIELS/MORDIE

From: Sharne and Andrew Newton
Sent: Monday, 26 February 2018 2:06 PM
Subject: Westerman-Shiels and Thornton-Mordie

Hello Michael

My name is Sharne Newton and I write to you today on the slight chance that someone maybe able to fill in some gaps in our family history.

My mother, Robyn Davis, is approaching her 70th birthday and I recently took her down to Cooma for a little reminiscing about her early years. She lived out at Shannon’s Flat on the Peet farm, Her father, Les Clarke was a worker on the farm and the family lived in a cottage on the property.

I will start with my maternal Grandma, Agnes Ella Grace Thornton. Now Agnes was born around 1914 and somehow came to be in the care of Elizabeth Shiels (Westerman) and her husband Thomas Sexton Shiels. Grandma would often tell the stories of the lady she called ‘mum’, one story she always mentioned was brushing her mums hair and her death during a flood. After Elizabeth's death I believe some aunts tried to help raise Agnes in Cooma, I believe they may have been Chalkers, but Thomas Sexton Shiels was her legal guardian by all accounts and one day when he was at a hotel, Agnes was standing outside and a lovely Salvation Army family offer to foster her and Mr Shiels agreed. Agnes then moved to Captains Flat.

In 1931 she married William Geppert and the Marriage certificate stated she was born in Cathcart to Charles Thornton (deceased) Labourer and Mary Mordie. The certificate was signed by Sexton Shiels as witness. After this marriage broke down Agnes found a new life with Leslie Richard Clarke of Cootamundra and together with their 3 daughters they moved to Shannons Flat to work on the Peet property. At this time Agnes was known as Grace Clarke. She introduced her daughters (one of which was my mum, Robyn) to their cousins and Aunties. My mum can remember Aunty Dalla and her daughters Fay, Isabella and Christine. She also remembers visiting older Aunts in Lambie Street in Cooma. Grace and Les Clarke moved the family onto Parkes late in the 1950 to gain employment with the railway. Grace stayed in contact with a lady she called Aunty Janey, she was apparently Dalla’s sister. These Aunty’s were only a few years older than Grace who we think was born around 1914.

After going back to Shannon’s flat a few weeks ago and speaking with Alan Peet, we believe the Aunt Dalla may have been Della Osmond? but I can’t find any information of her 3 daughters. Alan Peet’s daughter thought one may have been a Luton? I have attached a photo of my mum and her sisters along with Dalla, Fay, Christina and Isabella. I though someone may recognise the family involved.

My Grandma passed away in 2000 and sadly we didn’t get the chance to ask the questions that are now playing on our minds. I have searched Ancestry for a Charles Thornton and Mary Mordie that were listed as Grandma's biological parents, I can’t find them. I would love to be able to provide some closure for my mum, Robyn. She will be going back to Cooma in the coming months as the Peet family have invited the 3 girls back to have a meal with them at the farm, Mum has a lot of photos to share with them. I have included some in the email. If mum could also see if Fay, Christina or Isabella’s families were still about that would be wonderful.

Any assistance you or your community could provide would be most welcome and we would be most grateful.

Thank you so much

Kind regards,   Sharne Newton

Hi Sharne,

The Westerman family are in our database and Elizabeth Mary Westerman married Thomas Sexton Shiels.  Elizabeth’s sisters are also listed and some did marry Chalkers.  We don’t have any information on Agnes Ella Grace Thornton nor her parents unfortunately.  Your email will be included in our next newsletter along with your images and perhaps one of our readers may be able to assist you.  I do recommend to put your request and photos on our Facebook page which will be more effective in obtaining answers.

Regards, Ian

Thank you so much for your assistance Ian. I will look up your Facebook page now. How do I subscribe to your newsletter?

Cheers Sharne Newton

David Knox is our Newsletter editor and he will add you to our distribution list.

Regards, Ian

Footnote:  The Facebook interaction on this request is quite remarkable and the answers to Sharne's quest took less than 48 hours thanks to the extraordinary work of some of our readers.  Well worth the read. Regards, Ian

Hi Wayne,

Your grandfather Cecil Edwin Woodhouse was born in Jindabyne, between Cooma and Thredbo, just outside the Kosiusko National Park.  His details are in our database but we have little information on his own family and descendants.  Perhaps you could help us by supplying the details of your Grandmother and her children?  Edwin’s mother’s maiden name was Mabel Blanche Fletcher but we don’t have much information on her parents or ancestors as yet.  I don’t have any information on “Blackie” Woodhouse, obviously that was a nickname but whoever he was, he will be in our database, perhaps one of Cecil’s brothers or half brothers?

Description: FREEMAN'S JOURNAL, (SYDNEY, NSW), Thursday, 11th June, 1908, page 32

"  SOME EARLY AUSTRALIAN REMININSCENCE3.

Mrs. M. Johnson (daughter of the recently deceased Mrs. John Byrne, of Spring Valley) writes as follows : —

We see many sketches from time to time about the early days of Australia, and many get much credit for the labour of others; and such is the case with Hamilton Hume. It was my father who took Hamilton Hume all througn the Queanbeyan, Snowy River, and the Murray, and all through that country about. Yass, and many other parts of New South Wales. It was my father who had the cattle station on Lake George when it was dry, as well as another station in the Queanbeyan ere they traveled through. But Hamilton Hume and his people appear to have been very careful not to make any mention of my father's name in any of the former's writings. Hume took the credit of my father's labour and enterprise to himself. My father endured many hardships through that, part of the country ere he took his kinsman by marriage with him, and my father's name is omitted from nearly all Australian history ; and yet he was one of its greatest heroes. He was a quiet, retiring man, and did not push himself forward to gain honours.

On one occasion, before I was born, however, a certain man with a few others came up to Lake George and took illegal possession of his sister's (Mrs. Kennedy's) property after her husband's death. My father gathered a few of the neighbours and proceeded to Lake George to put the intruders out of possession. They had a shooting match, and my father lost one eye and got a bullet in his back which never could be extracted. At times he suffered severely, but he lived to the age of 84 years, strong and hearty, and did all his own farm work till a few weeks before he died ; and his death was then caused by stepping into a deep hole and hurting his spine.

He was the eldest son of "Billy" O'Byrne, of Ballymena, chief of the Wicklow Mountains in the '98 rising. There were two brothers, Thomas and James. Thomas was thrown from a horse and died. James, in throwing weights, hurt himself, and also died. That left of the family four daughters and two sons — my father and his brother William (who died in Princes-street, Sydney, nearly two years ago). He was born after his father's death, and his father left it as his deathbed request that if a son was born he was to be called William. My grandfather got a severe cold while on duty and died, but he had the pleasure of fulfilling his mission — namely, of gaining for Michael Dwyer his freedom.

In New South Wales my father and Michael Dwyer did not live very far apart — Michael Dwyer on the Bungendore side of Lake George, and my father on the Spring Valley side ; so that both families grew up in the same friendships as our grandparents lived.

My grandfather married a Miss Best, whose father was a baronet, but who died leaving neither title nor fortune, behind him. My grandmother was a Church of England lady. No priest being in the country, all the children were brought up in the Church of England. But my grandfather always instilled into the mind of my father that he had fought for the Faith and would die for the Faith. Father became a great friend of Father Therry, and would lead him on sick calls through the bush with the candle bark that falls from the white gum-tree, and would go with Father Therry in disguise into the prisons and hospitals, and each time Father Terry was captured and sent back a prisoner father kept his vestments and all articles required for Holy Mass. Three times he was sent back, and on the last occasion father was away, but came home late in the evening. To his great surprise, he found a lot of friends had found the vestments, and one man, a wealthy settler, had them on and was pretending to hear confessions and making the young folks jump over the broom to be married. Father was in a great way. He gathered up the vestments, put them away, and told father Therry what happened. Father Therry replied : "Never mind, his fortune may perish and go like chaff before the wind." Father and his mother and the rest of the family lived at Appin, where my uncle William was born. Soon after the event referred to my father picked up a poor man's Catechism, and became a Catholic; then his mother and stepfather and three of his sisters and youngest brother. My grandfather went by the name of Patrick Byrne in Australia."

THE BYRNES OF WICKLOW.  A NINETY-EIGHT MAN'S DESCENDANTS.

AN EXILE'S KINDRED IN N.S.W.

With reference to the death of Mrs. Ann Byrne, of Spring Valley, Goulburn, particulars of which appeared in our issue of the 28th we have received a communication from the deceased's daughter, Mrs. M. Johnston, "Ballarat," Walker street, North Sydney, in which she states that her mother was born in Kent street, Sydney, near the barracks, in the same, year as the late Queen Victoria, namely, on February 24, 1819. Her father was born in Parramatta in the year 1803, and his father was known as Patrick Byrne in Australia, but in Ireland as "Billy" O'Byrne, one who figured prominently in the '98 movement, and who was bosom friend of Michael Dwyer, the Wicklow Chief. Mr. Byrne was married to Ann Healy in 1834 at little St. Mary's Church, Sydney, by Father Therry, who was Miss Healy's godfather. After the birth of their first daughter in Goulburn, Mr. and Mrs. Byrne went to reside at Spring Valley, where sixteen children — seven daughters and nine sons— were born of whom there are surviving Francis, Thomas, Edwin, Edward and George (sons), and Mesdames Agnes Barden, Mary Johnston, Amelia Cartwright, and Alvina Unwin (daughters). Mrs. Byrne also leaves over fifty grandchildren and a number of great-grandchildren, Hume, the explorer, married Mr. Byrne's niece, and other members of his family were married to Messrs. Mr. Francis Kenney, Mr Thomas Hammond (Campbelltown), and Mr. John Carey. Mr. William Byrne, of Princes-street, Sydney, was Mr. John Byrne's youngest brother, and Mr. George Sykes, of Spring Valley, his half-brother. Mr. and Mrs. Byrne's married life, extending over sixty years, was an exceptionally happy one. Our correspondent adds: My dear mother said just before she died, to one of her  grandchildren, "I am ready to depart now, I have fulfilled my duty to God and the State." A nobler or more charitable couple never broke the world's bread. No one ever left their door empty-handed, though at the time of the diggings they would count a hundred in a day. If there was nothing left, mother would dig a few potatoes. Better parents never walked, and we, their surviving children, had the consolation of seeing them die happy, fortified by the rites of Holy Church, and every comfort that God could bestow on the just."

Description: This is my wifes direct line.  They never married and had 12 children.  Most registered as Boyton with no father and Hamilton with no mother.

BREACH of The REGISTRATION ACT. -C. S. Alexander, registrar, v. Alex. Hamilton. The charge was for giving false information of a birth. The defendant in registering the birth of a child on the 21st June, had said he was married at Tarago, on 12th March, 1862. S. Pembrooke, clerk to Mr. Alexander, proved registering the birth, from defendant's information. The clerk of the bench produced the certificates of two births registered by Alex. Hamilton on the 2nd March, 1862, and 5th September, 1863, in both of which defendant was stated to be unmarried. Defendant, in explanation, said he had misunderstood what he was saying, when he came to register the birth. Lydia Watt, mother of the child, said her maiden name was Lydia Winter Boynton; she was married to a man named Watt, seven years ago, but she had never followed the name up; she had lived with Hamilton for four years. Prisoner, who said he had not intended any deception, was committed for trial at the next quarter-sessions, on the 18th September, bail being allowed, defendant in £30, and one surety in £30.

The Goulburn Herald and Chronicle , page 3 Saturday 1 July 1865

OBITUARY. Mr. Alexander Hamilton, an old resident of Spring Valley, died in the Goulburn Hospital on Monday morning, at the age of 75 years. Deceased, who was married and leaves a family, was admitted to the hospital on 28th March. The cause of death was senile decay.

WEDDINGS SASSE-MURRAY

A quiet but pretty wedding was celebrated by the Rev. Father Butler at St Peters and Paul's Cathedral,  Goulburn, on Wednesday, October 5. The contrancting parties were Mr. Harold Roy Sasse, of Spring Valley, son of Mr. and Mrs. J. A. Sasse, Freshwater, Manly, formerly of Goulburn and Miss Nellie Ray Murray, fifth daughter of the late Mr. Thomas Murray and Mrs. Murray, Mountain View, Breadalbane.

The bride, who was given away by her brother, Mr. Harry Murray, looked charming in a frock of white creape de chine, trimmed with silver lace and beads. Her embroidered veil, was held in position by a coronet of orange blossoms. The bouquet was composed of fragrant sweet peas and apple blossoms.- The bridesmaid, a sister of the bride, Nurse Doris Murray, wore a frock of blue crepe de chine, and cream lace. She carried a superb bouquet of mauve and pink sweet peas. The groomsman was Mr. Bob Hamilton of Spring Valley.

The reception was held at the Joppa tea rooms where Mrs. Murray, mother of the bride, received the guests in a frock of black crepe de chine. The bridegroom's present to the bride was a diamond dress ring and to the bridesmaid he presented a xylonite set. The bride presented the bride groom with a beautiful pair of sleeve links suitably engraved. Mr. and Mrs. Sasse left by car for Sydney and thence for the Blue Mountains for the honeymoon. The bride travelled in a frock of green crepe de chine with hat and shoes to tone. The bride and bridegroom were the recipients of many presents and cheques.

Kind regards,

BRIDLES AT LOBBS HOLE

Fourteen Bridle cousins enjoyed a day at Lobbs Hole in the Snowy Mountains on Saturday January 8th 2018, to visit where their grandmother, Clara Bridle (nee Green) was born on 3.7.1876. Clara was the daughter of Thomas and Mary Ann Green (nee Venables). The Green family lived at Lobbs Hole from 1870 to 1880 and ran the butcher’s shop, before moving to Old Adaminaby. Descendants of Jack, Rolfe and Clyde Bridle and Trixie Clugston attended - Janet and Brendon Howard, Noel Bridle, Owen Bridle, Helen Symes, Robyn and Bruce James, Maree, Marty and Yvette Myhill, Jim Clugston, Leslie Clugston and Lurline Thorp. The cousins travelled from Tumut, Wagga, Leeton, Young, Canberra, Queanbeyan, Cooma and Swan Hill.

The group met at Kiandra along with another Bridle 'cousin' from Queensland, Scott Bridle from Glenmorgan. It was cool and breezy at Kiandra. Many thanks to NPWS for opening up the old Kiandra Courthouse/Hotel, so all the wonderful history there could be enjoyed.

The next stop was at the beautiful Three Mile Dam, then on to Wallace's Creek Lookout for the spectacular views, before winding down in to Lobbs Hole, which was later known as ‘Ravine’.

The cousins who had knowledge of the area were able to point out several landmarks, including Yan's old house and the butcher's shop (where Clara Green was born), along with the mining ruins and shafts, the 'Walls of China' and the new Snowy 2.0 project. There were many remnants from the old mining days, with most mines abandoned by 1919. Some old pieces of crockery and glass were found at the site of their great grandparents' home and the butchery.

Their great grandfather, Thomas Green was reputed to have found the first copper at Lobbs Hole, before 1874. Their uncle, Jack Bridle carried the last load of copper, 3 ton, out of the valley in 1946, so it is a wonderful connection of the Lobbs Hole copper industry within the family.

Picnic lunch was enjoyed in the shade by the Yarrangobilly River on such a hot day, with a chance to look over the large coloured family tree and to show Scott where his family fitted in. Scott is a descendant of Thomas and Mary Ann Bridle (nee Nuthall). All those present are descendants of William and Martha Bridle (nee Miles), who are buried in the Tumut Pioneer Cemetery. William and Martha and their family moved to the Monaro area at Island Lake near Cooma around 1842 and then to Talbingo in 1848. One of their sons, John Edward Bridle and his wife, Susan (nee Hoad) and family lived at Bowler's Flat at Blowering. Their son, Jim Bridle from Blowering and Clara Green from Adaminaby were married in 1906, at Old Adaminaby.

The group then visited the pise ruins of the Washington Hotel by the river. What a grand old hotel it must have been from 1909, as it was one of the largest rammed-earth structures of its day. The native blue banded bees were busy making their nests in the remains of the mudbrick walls.

The convoy then wound their way back up the other side, to stop off at the remains of Jounama Homestead, which must have been a grand homestead and garden in its day!

A great day was had by all and they look forward to another visit sometime in the future.

My husband’s grandmother, Kathleen Ryan was born in Redfern NSW in 1905, on her birth certificate mother is listed as Mary Ryan, father unknown. At the age of 6 months Kathleen was handed over to authorities and sent to an “asylum”, we think St Brigid/Brigidine Convent Cooma where Kathleen was educated as a boarder. Kathleen was placed in various foster homes around Goulburn, Cooma & Bungendore. Can someone suggest where I would find records of Kathleen’s time in the foster system from 1905 to approximately 1920 Kathleen was about 16 when she left the convent made her way back to Sydney.

Any help would be appreciated!

Description: Wedding

HARRIOTT AND DOYLE.

A very wedding was celebrated at Nuptial Mass on Tuesday, July 24, at St. Mary's Church, Bungendore, the contracting parties being Miss Violet Harriott, only child of the late Robt. Harriott and Mrs. A. W. Hyles, to Kevin P. Doyle, eldest son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Benedict Doyle, both of Bungendore, the Rev. Father O'Sullivan officiating. The church was beautifully decorated by the Sisters of St. Joseph. The bride entered the church on the arm of Mr. A. W. Hyles, who subsequently gave her away.

She wore an ankle-length frock of white, windswept satin, with inlets of ivory lace and the customary wreath and veil, both being the gift of the bride's grandmother, also train lent by her aunt, Mrs. Sid. Smith. The bride also wore the blue cloak of the Children of Mary Sodality, which she placed on Our Lady's altar herself, and carried a sheaf of arum lilies, pale pink carnations and asparagus fern.

The veil worn by the bride was embroidered by Mrs. Murphy, her grandmother, who is now 77 years of age. All the meats and poultry for the breakfast were cooked by this energetic old lady, and, as the guests numbered 100, it is easily discernible that one of Bungendore's best charity workers is still able to do her bit when the occasion arisen.

The bridesmaids were Miss Lillian Smith, who chose rose pink velvet for her frock with small toque of velvet flowers to match, and Miss Alice Doyle, who chose a frock of shrimp spun silk with toque to match, and both carried bouquets of pink sweet peas, stock and fern. The bride's train was carried by her two small cousins, Margaret Murphy, in a frock of pink tulle, and Gordon Smith in pink satin. Darcy Harriott was best man, and Vince O'Donnell acted as groomsman. The Wedding March was played by Mr. Darcy Murphy, who sang Paston Cooper's 'Ave Maria' during the signing of the register. Immediately after the ceremony the newly married couple paid a short call on the Sisters of St. Joseph at the convent, where they were both one-time students.

The reception was held at the Federal Hall. Mrs. Hyles (mother), who wore a cocoa brown morocain frock, with hat to tone and carried a posy of red carnations, and Daphne, welcomed the guests, who numbered 100.

Rev. Father O'Sullivan proposed the health of the bride and bridegroom and spoke of the sterling qualities of the young couple. The cake was made, iced, and decorated by Mr. D. Murphy, and was his gift to the bride and bridegroom. On leaving for the honeymoon, which is being spent in Sydney, the bride travelled in a grey flecked tweed costume with small brown hat. Mr. and Mrs. Doyle will make their future home in Bungendore.

Many beautiful presents were received, including several cheques. The following also spoke at the breakfast: Rev. (From our Correspondentr. )

A case of some local interest was held at the Police Court last week, before the Police Magistrate. Mrs Arthur Davis sued her husband for the desertion of his two children, the oldest child having gone to the father The evidence for the plaintiff was to the effect that about 15 months ago when she was living in a cottage near the post office with Miss Bourke her husband left her and since then had only contributed about £8 to the support of his children. Previous to this plaintiff had left her husband and took the children with her, owing to his cruelty to herself and the children. She took him back on his promise to reform, but after being with her for a few weeks he left her as above stated. The defence was that Davis had not deserted the children, that plaintiff had kept them away from him, and that no previous application had ever been made to him to support them The P.M. said he was sorry he could make no order, but the plaintiff had failed to prove that Davis had deserted the children.

                      Bombala divorce Suit.

                       DAVIS V. DAVIS.

                    DECREE REFUSED.

The divorce suit, Davis v. Davis, was before Mr. Justice Walker on Wednesday morning, June 8th.

The petitioner was Arthur Henry Davis, who sought a dissolution of his marriage from Annie Jessie Davis (formerly M'Manus), on the ground of her adultery with Joseph Hughes, the younger, who was joined as co-respondent.

Petitioner, a cordial manufacturer, carrying on business at Bombala, said he married the respondent in November, 1879, at Wilcannia, according to the rites of the Church of  England.

They lived in various towns in this State, and finally resided together in Bombala. They lived together till July, 1901. when he returned home and found that the house was empty.

He subsequently discovered her. living in another street. He asked her to return home, but she would not do so.

He was working about ten miles out of Bombala, and used to visit her at the week end.

From July, 1901, till November, 1902, he supported her. She took a pie-shop, and would not give it up.

In February, 1903, he got under the house, and saw the co-respondent admitted by respondent. Hughes, who was a saddler, residing next door, was in the house from dusk till ten minutes past 2 o'clock in the morning.

Later he spoke to Hughes about it, and the latter struck him. During the same month he looked through a blind at the pie shop and saw the respondent and the co-respondent misconducting themselves. Subsequently the respondent and the co respondent left Bombala.

In answer to his Honor petitioner said he suspected his wife and watched her. He had not at that time spoken to her nor Hughes.

He was afraid of the latter, whom be was told carried a revolver.

His Honor said petitioner's conduct did not warrant his granting a decree nisi, and therefore dismissed the suit.

Subsequently it was pointed out by Mr, Windeyer that there was certain other evidence to be given, which he asked, should be taken, inasmuch as there might be an appeal to the Full Court.

His Honor saw no objection, and the petitioner gave supplementary evidence. He said he had asked respondent to leave the pie-shop, and told her he would overlook everything for the sake of the children, but she declined to do so.

George Ah Foy, miller's assistant at Bombala, said he remembered something happening in February, 1903. He was passing a pie shop, and Davis caught him by the arm and asked him to have a look at something. Witness looked, and saw respondent and co-respondent misconducting themselves.

Other evidence was given in support of the allegation of adultery.

His Honor said his decision of the morning was based on the ground that the husband's action, by standing by and allowing, the adultery to be committed, had practically, conduced to the same. He would, therefore, adhere to his original decision.

Bombala Times and Manaro and Coast Districts General Advertiser (NSW) Friday 12 August 1904 Pg 2

Arthur Henry Davis appealed to the Full Court last week from the decision of Mr. Justice Walker, sitting in Divorce. The petitioner appealed on the grounds (1) that upon the facts proved in evidence his Honor should have pronounced the decree nisi for dissolution of marriage, (2) that his Honor was in error in deciding that the petitioner's own conduct had been such as to disentitle him to relief. The appeal was dismissed.

A few months ago he went to Sydney for an operation, but the doctors could do nothing for him The deceased was a well known resident of this district, having carried on the business of cordial and aerated water manufacturer ever since he came to reside here.

NEWS and Notes.

Mr. A. H. Davis (78) died at his home on Monday last at mid-day, after an illness extending over some months.

The cause of death was an internal growth, which defied all that medical skill and constant nursing could do to stop its course. Mr. Davis came to Bombala over 40 years ago, and set up business as a cordial and aerated waters manufacturer, an industry that he carried on in our midst ever since. He was twice married, and of his first family one son, Arthur, was killed at the war, and the other son (Coulson) and daughter (Mrs. Mclntyre) are still living. There was one son (Earl) in the second family, and he and his mother are still living. He has two sisters and a brother at Narromine, and one sister (Mrs. Hubbard, of Coogee) was with him at the last. The funeral on Tuesday was largely attended by relatives and friends, the Rev. Broadfoot (Anglican) conducting the service at the church and graveside. When in his prime the deceased took a prominent part in public matters in the town and district. In sporting life he was a

member of the football team, and was always a keen supporter of the various racing clubs. He was one of the first Aldermen of the Bombala Municipality, and was at various times on the Hospital and other Committees.

Description: OBITUARY

MRS. EMILY RYAN

The death occurred at her home, "Wambidgee," Addison Street, on Monday evening, about a quarter past six, of Mrs Emily Ann Ryan, at the age of 78. She had been ill for about eight weeks, and during that time she was attended by her daughter, Miss Mary Ryan. Mrs Ryan was the youngest daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. George Sykes, of Spring Valley, where she was born.

The big country home was always open with genuine hospitality to the pioneer priests, among whom was the late far-famed, Father Therry. Even a few days before her death, Mrs. Ryan could recall with pleasure these early experiences, and her sympathy still lived for the hard ships of priests in the rough pioneer ing days. Mrs. Ryan was also one of the oldest ex-students of Our Lady of Mercy College, living in the district, and her interest and loyalty were such that until the last reunion, she had at least attended the functions held in the day-time.

Following her marriage to Mr. Edmund Ryan, her home was made at "Innisfail," Cullerin, and she came to Goulburn to reside, about 30 years ago. Since that time she had been an example of fidelity to the Sodality to which she belonged. Though her health was on the wane for some considerable time, it was only eight weeks ago that she became seriously ill, and she counted among her special privileges the visits of the Cathedral priests and of the sisters from the Goulburn convents.

Mrs. Ryan is survived.by her husband, Mr. Edmund Ryan, of Goulburn, and one daughter Miss Mary Ryan. There are several relatives living in Goulburn and other centres. She was the last member of the family, of the late Mr. Sylvester Sykes, of Belmore Street, being the last of her brothers, of whom there were ten. One other sister predeceased her.

Requiem Mass was celebrated in the SS. Peter and Paul's Cathedral this morning at nine o'clock, and the funeral moved from the Cathedral for the Kenmore Roman Catholic cemetery at 2.30 pm. Rev. Fr. Deegan, Adm. assisted by Rev. Fr. Comerford, officiated.
