Description: SUDDEN DEATH IN VERNER-STREET.

AN old man named Homan Rice, watchmaker, died suddenly on Monday morning at his residence in Verner-street. A magisterial inquiry was held at the Court-house in the afternoon by Mr. O'Brien, and Dr. McKillop, after viewing the body and hearing the evidence, came to the conclusion that the cause of death was senile decay, accelerated by an attack of influenza. Deceased had been living with his son Thomas Rice, a lad about 15 years of age. Thomas Rice gave evidence to the effect that his father was 76 years of age, a widower, and a native of County Cork, Ireland. Witness was his only son. He said his father went to bed on Sunday night at half-past 12 o'clock and then complained of pains nearly all over him. He had been complaining of illness off and on for about 10 days previously. He slept in a bed next to witness, but the latter heard no noise from him except constant coughing and a choking noise. He got up at 6 o'clock and went to bed again at 8, intending to have an hour's rest. About nine o'clock he started coughing and kept it up for half-an-hour, and at 25 minutes to 10 he took a choking fit and went straight off. He had not been attended by a doctor. Mary Beale, laundress, said she had been acquainted with deceased for a short time. He had not had very good health since his arrived in Goulburn, about three months ago. She saw him last Sunday week, and he seemed very bad then, and she tried to get him to see a doctor, but he would not hear of it. On Sunday night she went to see his son, who was ill, and deceased seemed much better and more cheerful, but he was coughing very much. Next morning she was sent for and she found deceased dead. The coroner's finding was in accordance with the medical testimony.

Description: DEATH OF MR. ED. R. ROLFE.

South Coast Pioneer.

There passed away on Monday last an old identity of Nerriga, Nowra, and Braidwood districts, in the per son of Mr. E. R. Rolfe, at the home-stead, Nerriga (writes the Nowra "Leader.") He was equally well-known in either of the places. For many years he was referred to by numerous friends as "Old Ned Rolfe." He was a man of keen business acumen as a dealer in live stock. He was a native of Windellema, near Goulburn where he was born in the year 1845, 86 years ago, and even since he was able to cross his legs over a saddle there was seldom a day he was not on horseback. Thousands of miles he travelled in that way, in dealing in stock alone. He was an equestrian of no mean order up to several years ago, though of more recent date was frequently to be seen driving in a sulky either to Nowra or Braidwood, or Goulburn. Indeed he was a familiar figure in the saleyards at those centres for half-dozen decades or more. The last-mentioned centre was one of his principal marketing places. Perhaps there was no better judge of beast  horses or cattle for dealing purposes than the same late Edward Richard Rolfe. He travelled in all weathers and under all conditions, when snowing and more often the reverse when the broiling sun would have his steed in a lather of sweat, whilst he himself lost sufficient perspiration to damp the saddle on which he was seated.

Many thousands of head of stock passed through his hands, to say nothing of the large numbers of sheep he bought and sold to advantage. Seldom, if ever, did he fail to show a profit on his transactions, and deserves all credit for his success, having made a competence, being possessed of considerable land and stock. The late Mr. Rolfe, needless to say, was one of the hearty old school. Though as stated previously, he travelled under all sorts of weather conditions, he scarcely, if ever, indulged in the fiery liquor to keep the cold out or dull the biting cold sleet winds that he surely faced in his long years of travel. He was truly one of the old hardy pioneers that are fast passing out, leaving new generations with more comfortable and modern means to journey such long distances as in the days of yore. He was an excellent judge of Horseflesh, being a particularly keen admirer of the best of blood stock, though it might be said there were few better judges or greater admirers of the draught stock. He went in for both. When the Coolangatta thoroughbreds dispersal sale took place, many years ago, Mr. "Ned", Rolfe made it his business to be there and was one of the largest purchasers. Some of the noted entires in blood stock he had were "Tim Whiffler," "Churchhill," "Comet', and others. Old hands will remember "Lilly," in the days of the late George McGuire and the late Molyneux Harridge, chemist, a fine race mare, which was one of his breeding. "Havanah," was another noted sire, which passed through his hands, to obtain good racing strain. In the draughts he had "Young Topsman," "Tallarand,' and various others.

He married a member of the old Henry family, Mr. Robt. Henry, of Ulladulla, formerly of Nowra, was a nephew, and there was issue thirteen in family, eleven of whom survive the grand old man, viz., Edward and William, who are twins, of Nerriga John and Leslie (Kyogle); Harry (Sergeant of police, Sydney); Arthur (Komungla, near Goulburn) ; Cecil (Ranger Cordeaux and Avin Dam). The daughters were Francis (deceased) Mrs. Dunn; Jessie (Mrs. Wallis, Murwillumbah); Mabel (Mrs. W. Underwood), Nowra; Amy (Mrs. Hart), Kyogle; and Ruby (Mrs Muffit) Mortdale. The other son was Lindsay, who it will be remembered met a sad ending on the mountain side at Sassafras as a result of a motor lorry accident at night a little over twelve months ago.

The interment took place at Nerriga cemetery, which is on the estate on Wednesday last, when a large circle of old friends attended to pay their last tribute of respect.

Description: DEATH OF OLD NERRIGA RESIDENT.

The death occurred at Nowra on Saturday last of Mr John Kennedy at the age of 66 years. He only took ill on Tuesday last, and was taken to the Elmund Hospital. Nowra. where pneumonia supervened, and he passed away as stated.

Mr. Kennedy purchased the De Mestre estate at Nerriga about 40 years ago, where he carried on grazing until about 14 years ago, when he disposed of his property and returned to Nowra to live.

The deceased married Miss Norah McNamara, daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. E. McNamara, of Nerriga, who predeceased him 25 years ago. He leaves one son and two daughters, viz., John, of Nowra, Hilda (Mrs. Reg Hockey), of Nerriga, and Molly, the wife of Councillor E. C. Smith, of Nerriga.

The deceased gentleman was a man of outstanding character , a man whose word was his bond. Liked and respected by every one with whom he came in contact, he was a man who had many friends.

To use the words of a Nerriga resident, 'He was the whitest man the district has had.' The remains were brought to Nerriga on Sunday and interred in the R.C. cemetery in the presence of a large gathering of relatives and friends. His three brothers and a number of his intimate friends followed the cortege from Nowra on Sunday. Rev. Father McGilvray conducted an impressive burial service. Mr. J. J. Muller, of Nerriga, had charge of the funeral arrangements. We extend our sympathy to his relatives, and particularly to Mrs. E. Smith, of Nerriga.

Description: Bombala Times (NSW) Friday 14 October 1938 Pg 3

INQUEST

On Friday afternoon last , the District Coroner, Mr. Julius Vider, conducted an inquiry in connection with the death of Mr. Louis Ingram.

Dr. James Macarthur deposed to having viewed the body in a horse yard near the drill hall on 5th October.

He was quite dead, and in his opinion had been dead about an hour. There was no evidence of any struggle. On the 6th October he performed a post mortem examination. The body was well nourished, and there were no external marks of violence. All the organs were healthy except the heart, which showed acute dilitation and had evidently been diseased for some time.

In his opinion death was due to heart failure. He would say that deceased must have been a man of strong character and grit, as from the nature of his trouble he must have suffered considerably from heart pain and at times difficulty in breathing. He had never attended him professionally.

Constable D. J. F. Sturgess deposed that at 5.50 on 5th October he went to the horse yard, where he saw the body of Louis Ingram lying on his back.

He was dead, and appeared to have been dead for some time. There was no evidence of any struggle or foul play. Dr. Macarthur arrived a few minutes later and pronounced life extinct. The body was also viewed by the Coroner, Mr. Vider, who ordered its removal to the hospital morgue for the purpose of post mortem examination.

Edward Ingram, retired horse trainer, a brother of deceased, gave formal evidence relating to the personal property, etc., of deceased and deposed that he and his brother had lived together at Orbost for about 35 years, deceased returning to Bombala about two years ago. He remembered Louis being very sick at Orbost about five years ago, suffering from heart trouble.

He was attended by a doctor there.

He had complained of his heart ever since.

Sergeant G. H. Sewell gave formal evidence of having conveyed the body to the hospital and attending the post mortem.

John R. Burgess, bank officer, deposed that between 5.30 and 6 p.m. on 5th October he was in the vicinity of Sister Dent's cottage in Burton Street when a lady came across and said there was a man lying in the corner of the horse yard nearby, and that he was dead.

He went to the yard and saw the body lying on its back. Sister Dent came any sign of life, and said, "He is dead."

He then went and informed the police.

Gordon Desmond Ingram, a schoolboy nephew of deceased, deposed to having been talking to his uncle at the horse yard on his way home from school about 4.30, when he seemed all right.

Lionel Robert Kimber, aged 10 years, deposed that he was going home past Mr. Ingram's horse yard and saw Lou Ingram down in the far corner of the horse yard, lying on his back. His hat was lying about a yard from his head. He ran home and told his mother that Mr. Ingram was dead in the horse yard. His mother then went down.

The Coroner found that deceased had died from heart failure due to acute dilitation.

FOUND DEAD

MR. LOUIS INGRAM

The finding of Mr. Louis Ingram's dead body in the open paddock adjoining the Private Hospital came as a shock to the community on Wednesday afternoon. A little lad, Micky Kimber, discovered the body as he was passing through the paddock, and went to his home nearby and informed his mother. Mrs. Kimber called Nurse Dent at the Private Hospital, but it appeared that deceased had been dead about an hour. He had apparently collapsed while busy attending to some horses in the paddock. On the previous evening, while similarly engaged with his nephew, Bob, in the same paddock, the latter was rather severely kicked in the side by a horse and had to be taken to hospital. It is thought that this incident might have had some effect upon deceased, who had not been in good health for some years and had, we understand, been under treatment for his heart. An inquest will be held to-day. Deceased was 56 years of age and was born at Maharatta, but spent about 20 years in Victoria, returning to Bombala some three years ago. He was a great lover of horses and a good horseman, and found his main interest in them, being well-known as a trainer and horse owner. Personally he was a very good natured and popular man, and his sudden passing is regretted by many friends. He was unmarried. Surviving brothers are Ted, Henry, Charlie, Percy and Arthur, and sisters Mrs. C. Cootes, Mrs. W. Harris and Miss Ethel, for whom general sympathy will be felt.

The funeral yesterday afternoon was largely attended, Rev. Cutcliffe officiating.

=====================================

Delegate Argus and Border Post, Saturday 21 September 1901

A Bride before the Court.

ON Monday, 16th inst., Mary Davey, a newly married woman of some 17 summers, and attired in her bridal costume appeared before the court to answer the charge of how she became possessed of a certain silver watch and rolled gold muff chain.

George Stutchbery deposed: I am a Senior Constable of Police, and reside at Delegate; on the 13th inst. I received a communication from the Bombala police reporting the loss of a lady's open faced silver watch and rolled gold muff chain from the dwelling of Joseph Law Hawk, Bombala, on or about the 3rd inst; I proceeded to Craigie on the 13th inst., and from something I heard there I went to see the accused at Quinburra on the following morning about 8 a.m.: I saw the accused in a paddock at Quinburra; I said to her, "Is your name Mrs Davey?? She replied "Yes!" I said, "When were you married?" She replied, "I was married on the 4th, in Bombala, by Mr Mitchie." I asked her whether she was living with her husband; she said "No; and I don't intend to live with him; I was run on to marry him, I don't like him." I said, "Were you at Mrs Law Hawk's place when you were in Bombala?" She replied "Yes." I said "After you left Mrs Law Hawk missed a watch and chain in a drawer in her dressing table." She said "I have a watch," and she handed me the watch and chain produced; I asked her where she got it from; she said, "A little boy was playing with it and put it in my pocket." I then brought her to the lockup at Delegate and charged her with stealing a watch and chain from the dwelling of Joseph Law Hawk, at Bombala, on or about the 3rd inst.; the watch and chain produced is identical with the one stolen from Law Hawk's residence; I now pray that the accused be remanded to Bombala, to be dealt with as the witnesses for the prosecution reside there. Remanded accordingly.

=====================================

Bombala Times and Monaro and Coast Districts General Advertiser, Friday 20 September 1901

Police Court.

At the Delegate Police Court on Monday, Mary Davey was charged with stealing one watch and chain of the value of £2. the property of Joseph Law Hawk, on 3rd inst. Senior Constable Stutchbury said he received information as to the theft of the watch and chain on the 13th instant, and then proceeded to Quinburra where he met the accused in a paddock. In reply to questions accused said she was married at Bombala by Mr. Michie on the 4th instant; she was not living with her husband, nor did she intend to live with him; she was run on to marry him and did not like him; she was at Mrs. Law Hawk's place when in Bombala. She handed witness a watch and chain which she said she had got from the little boy who was playing with it. Witness then brought her to Delegate and charged her with the theft. The accused was remanded to Bombala to be dealt with. At the Bombala Police Court on Thursday, before Mr. J. Badgery, J.P., the case was continued. Constable Tilney produced the Delegate depositions, warrant, and stolen articles. Joseph Law Hawk identified the watch and chain as belonging to his wife's sister. They were in a drawer in his bedroom on the 3rd instant. He did not give the accused authority to take the watch and chain. Florence Law Hawk said that on the 3rd of this month the accused was in her bedroom until half-past nine at night. Witness identified the watch and chain as belonging to her sister. They were in a drawer in her bedroom on the morning of the 3rd instant. She missed the watch from the drawer next morning when she went to wind the watch up. She wrote to accused about it on the 8th or 9th and as she received no reply she reported the loss to her husband. Witness never gave accused authority to take the watch. Sarah Hepburn identified the watch and chain as her property and said she had not given anyone authority to take it from her sister's residence. The accused pleaded not guilty and elected to be dealt with summarily. Fined 10s in default 7 days in Bombala gaol. Watch and chain to be returned to Joseph Law Hawk.

Proposed Change: Carpenter, Eric William (I67548)

Tree: SE NSW Pioneers and Settlers

Link: http://monaropioneers.com/TNG/getperson.php?personID=I67548&tree=MP

Description: Bega District News (NSW) August 25, 2011

TO THOSE who know Eric Carpenter, it will be no surprise to hear where he spent his 90th birthday last week.

He was at work, in the machinery shed of Rodney Griffin Pty Ltd in Auckland Street amid the motors, pumps, drill-bits and lathes that have been part of his trade for 77 years.

His birthday was much like any other work day: machining, welding, re-building engines and fixing pumps from 8am-4pm.

“I tried retiring when I was 70 but I didn’t like it,” Eric said.

“That only lasted 12 months and I’ve been working ever since, and I’ll keep going as long as I’m fit enough.

“I reckon work doesn’t kill, dodging work kills.”

That’s something Eric could not be accused of.

Born in Bemboka in “horse and cart days”, he began work as a 13-year-old in a machinery shop in Bairnsdale for five shillings-a-week.

War broke out five years later and Eric enlisted, serving as a non-commissioned officer in charge of field workshops in Darwin, Lae and the infamous Markham Valley in Papua New Guinea.

Back in Bemboka after the war, he developed a reputation for being able to fix just about anything.

He took on a job with Stevenson’s Earthmov-ing, Bega, where he worked for more than 30 years.

When he describes his time with the company, it’s clear he helped to shape the landscape of the modern Bega Valley Shire.

He levelled many of Bega’s playing fields, Merimbula Airport, Bega High School, the old RSL bowling green and Tura Beach, which was “just raw bush in the old days”.

Eric has been at Rodney Griffin since 2002.

“A lot of things have changed around the place, probably for the better and I guess I’ve seen a lot of those changes,” Eric said.

“But I’m still using a lot of what I learned in that Bairnsdale machinery shop.

“What I’m doing now isn’t physically too hard, I’ve got my own space so I just tinker away.

“I think you’ve got to keep working to keep living .”

Owner of Rodney Griffin, Bruce Griffin, recalls the first time he saw Eric.

“One day I was standing right here at the counter with Dave Stevenson and Eric walked past outside,” Bruce said.

“You see that man, Dave said, he worked for me 30 years and he was never late for work once and he was never late to leave.

“That’s just what he’s like, you could set your clock by him.”

Bruce said Eric, whose daily tasks might include anything from panel beating to fitting and turning, could never be replaced.

“You’ve only got to look at the work he does to see how valuable he is,” Bruce said.

“The knowledge he’s got is just incredible and there’s no way you could get anybody else in to do what he does.

“On top of that, he’s just an all-round nice guy.”

Through most of his working life, Eric spent his free time indulging his passion for power boat racing.

He introduced the sport on Wallaga Lake, put on a display on Lake Burley Griffin for the prime minister and raced competitively for 30 years.

High-speed boating is now a thing of the past, but Eric’s daughter Lanelle said her father continued to amaze the family.

“He still drives up to the Gold Coast every year and right through Sydney,” she said.

“A lot of his friends have passed on but friends and family are his top priority; he likes to have a beer and go up to the club.

“And I think he’ll keep working as long as he can stand up, probably longer.”

ABC South East NSW Posted 18 August, 2016 by Bill Brown

Eric Carpenter was born in the "old Carpenter homestead" on the family's dairy farm near Bemboka on the far-south coast of New South Wales, one of six children.

According to his parents he was born in 1922.

"My grand-parents reckon it was 1921. I'll take '22. It makes me a year younger," he said.

As a child Mr Carpenter experienced a rural lifestyle more like the 1800s than the 20th century.

Travel was by horse and sulky on dirt tracks, cars were a rare luxury, travel to Sydney was by coastal steamer, and there was no electricity.

With kerosene lamp as the only lighting the family went to bed early and rose early.

The highlight of each week was Tuesday.

"Cattle sale one Tuesday and the following Tuesday, the pig and calf sale," Mr Carpenter said.

"That's what we always called 'handshake day'. When all the cockys would come to town and meet one another. They used to mainly meet at the pub."

Mr Carpenter and his younger sister would travel to Bega with their parents by horse and sulky.

"We used to leave about five or six in the morning, and get in around 10 o'clock."

They took a route that avoided the steepest hills, but young Eric would get impatient at the slow uphill pace, and annoy his father.

"So Dad would get out and walk beside the horse, smoking his pipe. At the top of the hill he'd hop back in and we'd jig-jog on again."

It was an early sign of a passion for speed.

They crossed the river upstream from Bega where there was a footbridge for the family to cross while Mr Carpenter's father would ford the river in the sulky.

"We'd unyoke the horse at the coach-house [in Bega], then Dad would go to the sale. Mum and us kids went up the street to go shopping," Mr Carpenter said.

The family would later meet up at the Bega Family Hotel opposite the coach-house.

"If you wanted a drink of water you'd go outside to an underground tank with a pump, and you'd pump a bit of water. There was a mug there on a string," he said.

"And we'd wait for Dad, he'd come in and have a drink at the bar and then join us in the dining room [that] had big long tables with stools."

After a meal they'd yoke the horse and be back to the farm by dark.

The family moved to Bairnsdale in Victoria when, during the Great Depression, his father got work moving cattle from the Bega district to Bairnsdale. The journey, by horse and sulky, took the family a week.

Mr Carpenter was 13 when he started his working life "welding and machining, lathe-work, jack of all trades and master of none".

It was the beginning of a career that was all about initiative and a desire to learn, but without formal training.

"In those days you had to learn as things came along. There was no-one there to teach you in a lot of cases. You learn as you go. You try to improve things," he said.

When World War II started he joined the army and was sent to Darwin just as the Japanese began bombing.

"It was very serious. Everything was flattened. Darwin was in a mess. Ships upside down in the bay. You couldn't believe it yourself to see everything flattened."

From there he was sent to New Guinea until the last year of the war when he was injured.

"I had a bit of a mishap doing our normal round-up of Japs in those days. You go out and you chase. Just normal routine you do every day," he said.

He was flown back to Australia and spent nine months in hospital.

After returning to Bega Mr Carpenter worked in various machinery shops and earthmoving businesses.

He also developed a passion for roller-skating and powerboat racing.

"I used to tune all my own motors when I was racing, built my own boats, my own motors. Just general engineering and a bit of common sense."

He finally retired when he was 70, but "didn't like it".

"I went down to Pambula to do a job and ended up nine years there. Then up to [Bega] and I was 10 years there."

Then Mr Carpenter began work at another workshop where he is still working "here and there".

"I'm sort of taking it a bit easy now, getting a second wind."

He said he enjoyed his working life too much to stop.

"If anything was having trouble I always liked to tinker around and try to find out the reason why, try to rectify it, and try to get a bit more out of things," Mr Carpenter said.

"I've thoroughly enjoyed it all. It's something I like doing. Work doesn't kill anyone. It's dodging I think that does the damage. Good exercise. Keeps the mind fresh. And I'm still looking forward to doing a bit."

Obituary: Mary Cocks' legacy to Eden

Mary Cocks - who lived in Eden for 81 of her 91 years - died in Pambula Hospital on Friday, April 21, 2017.

Born in Cobargo on May 25, 1925, Mary was the eldest daughter of Eileen and Vincent (Barney) Welsh.

The family moved to Eden in 1935 and Mary attended St Joseph's Convent School Eden where she met her future husband, Lloyd Cocks. Later she became the first student to complete an Intermediate Certificate at St Vincent’s College, Sydney.

Mary and Lloyd were married in Eden at Our Lady Star of the Sea Catholic Church in 1953. They had three children, Stephen, Maryanne and Damien, and eight grandchildren. In the Magnet last year Mary and Lloyd attributed their long and happy lives to a love of Eden and love for each other.

Mary fought for women's rights and led the cause by example in the fields of business, politics and community service. Her family owned the Hotel Eden, now the Great Southern Hotel, and in 1951 she became the second woman in NSW to obtain a publican's licence. She was secretary of LW and CK Cocks, started by Lloyd and his brother Cedric in 1948.

She joined the Eden branch of the CWA in 1953, and over her 63 year-long membership would hold every officer bearer's role; she became the first woman to sit on the Eden Fishermen's Recreation Club board of directors. In 1975 she founded and became president of TREES, the Truthful Reporting of Eden's Environment and Surroundings; she also served as a Bega Valley Shire councillor. She was named Apex Citizen of the Year in 1979 and was honoured with an Order of Australia in 1995.

She organised the Combined Churches’ Debutante Ball, training debutantes and partners for more than 30 years. She worked tirelessly for the Imlay Special Needs and Meals on Wheels, and in her latter years knitted beanies for troops in Afghanistan.

Mary was the eldest of seven children, three of whom are still living. Monica Woods will remember her sister as a woman of deep faith and a great organiser with an infectious laugh. Social Justice Advocate John Liston said Mary left an "amazing legacy of good".

AVERY/CALDWELL

From: Helen Gray
Sent: Thursday, 8 March 2018 11:15 PM
Subject: Avery - Caldwell Marriage in "Maffra" in 1896

Hi Ian,

It feels like I've been around the world, several times, via Monaro Pioneers, (namely looking against the Avery name), once with information for "William Sextus Avery marrying Catherine Jane Caldwell", but in a Bombala Church.  I was unable to obtain any information by way of the Microfilm at the NLA, under Bombala. (but now will go back to the Microfilm, and look against Maffra heading, or Nimitabelle).

My information at hand, was the connection with William Sextus Avery, was that he was a Constable at Nimitybelle not long after he had  trained with the Police force in Sydney in 1895. The other appointment was also in Adaminaby during 1897, and while there, their first baby boy was born, William Charles Avery.  (William Sextus), presumably belonging to the Goulburn Police force, returned to Goulburn where their other five girls were born in Goulburn. My husbands mother, Ruth Edna (Avery) Gray born 1911, youngest daughter of William & Catherine (Caldwell) Avery.

At this point not once did I think to connect the Caldwell name with NSW, as Catherine Jane Caldwell was born in Heathcote Victoria.

It was only last Easter when cousins were together sharing a bottle of red wine, which had been bottled by her son from Yarra Glen Victoria.  The label on the bottle indicated that he had used grapes from the Heathcote area.  It was after that, I went "Troving" through the Heathcote newspapers. Got loads of information about her immediate family.

And in September last year, while spending a month looking after my daughters home in Melbourne, all alone, I joined the Scotland Association of Family History Societies, and was able to get an understanding of the Caldwells in the Paisley, Renfrewshire Scotland.  Found that Catherine Jane Caldwell's mother was easier to track down, as her name was "Charlotte Kennedy Smith" and that she married a William Caldwell,  but, not so for   - William Caldwell born in 1827 --- as there were so many William Caldwells, I had no success matching him to his parents.  At one stage I came across a Janet Gray who was married to a John Caldwell, but dismissed that at once, as I had Williams death certificate, and  it stated that his father was yet another William.

It Puzzled me why a young man who had been born in Coleraine Victoria -  would end up travelling through Nimitabelle to get to Sydney to join the NSW Police Force.

After William Sextus Avery's mother died in Coleraine in 1887, William Sextus Avery left Colaraine and in 1894 along with Catherine Jane Caldwell was on the move again, why Bombala?  I did come across the John and Janet (Gray) Caldwell family on your Monaro Pioneers website, and within that family who had settled at Bobundarah near Cooma.  And they have on their tree a son William born 1827 but without any information.

So from Dec 2017 when I downloaded a copy of their family,  until now and looking at the Avery - Caldwell marriage, which doesn't mentions Bombala at all, but the date and place being - 7 October 1896 at Maffra, according to the rights of the Church of England.  William Sextus Avery has listed his birthplace as (Mulwala - but I am thinking this is incorrect). The next believable information, that of Usual Occupation being "Police Constable", residence,  Nimmitybelle, that his father was a "Painter" (but deceased). And for Catherine Jane Caldwell, residence, ?Maffra?, fathers occupation, (I am unable to distinguish - (still living) - (was a gold miner in Heathcote, and before that, in Scotland a weaver).

So your website has been most useful, in identifying the Officiating Minister and the two witnesses present. That being Minister - Canon Ross Edwards; witnesses presence: Bridget Roach and PW Jenkins.

Would it be possible if you could please, arrange for me, contact details of a living member of the Caldwell family that would be willing to meet with me?  I feel more confident that I've finally found the missing link.  Hopefully, this meeting maybe able to connect the dots of their William Caldwell, born 1827.

Looking  forward to a favourable outcome.

Helen Gray alias (MayGray)

Hi Helen,

Looks like you are correct, I found the following death registration for William Caldwell in Victoria (Mother Janet Gray, father William Caldwell).  Given the notorious unreliability of DC information on parents, I suggest you investigate this further....

As for family contacts, I recommend you put your request on our Facebook page which is proving to be a remarkably successful vehicle for connecting people.

Description: Othell died on 15 October in a tragic accident...this is the article from the Daily Mercury on his death...

Maitland Daily Mercury – 16 October 1917

Railway fatality at Lochinvar - At about 5o'clock last evening a sad fatality occurred at the Lochinvar railway station, Othol Byrne railway porter at the Lochinvar station, being the victim (writes our Lochinvar correspondent) . It is believed that Byrne was attemptlng to board a moving coal train on his way home to Allandale, when he missed his footing and fell on the line badly cut and bruised. He lay on the line for a little time, when a railway carpenter, named O'Brien, was the first to notice him, as he walked along some little time afterwards. Byrne was carried into the waiting room and his wounds dressed and attended to until a doctor arrived From  Maitland. The Injuries were of a serious nature. Byrne was severely cut about the head and body and one hand was almost torn off. He had been porter at the Lochinvar railway station for only a short time, and was a quiet, unassuming, hardworking young fellow, very popular with everyone. Dr. Baruher was summoned from West Maitland when the accident occurred, but the injured man expired before he reached Lochinvar. The remains were removed to the morgue at West Maitland Hospital, whence the funeral will move from tomorrow morning. At the time of the accident, the night officer (Mr. John S. Jones) and Messrs. George Dean and O'Brien were on the platform. He was about 19 years of age, and was the second eldest son of Mr. Wm. Byrne, dairy farmer, of Allandale. The unfortunate young fellow succumbed to the injuries very soon.
