Description: Accidentally Drowned
Death of the late James Hately I
find that the deceased, on the 27th day. of August, 1946, at Coolalie,
was accidentally drowned, through falling into a creek face downwards, after
striking his head on a stone which caused a fracture of the skull.
This was the finding of the Coroner, Mr. E.
J. Hickey, at an inquest held at the Court House on Friday last, touching the
death of James Austin Hately,
whose dead body was found in a creek atCoolalie on
August 28.
Evidence was given by Alex. D. Hay, a station hand, employed by Mr. C.
S. D. Hay, of "Cleveden," Coolalie,
that on August 28, in crossing a bridge over a creek he saw the body of a man
lying in the creek, face down in the water, and knees drawn up under the body.
He appeared to be dead. Witness informed Mr. Hay,
who rang up the police, while witness and John Hay went back to the scene, and
lifted the man's face from the water. He then recognised the body as that of
Jas. Hately. Near
the place was a man's pipe, a sugar bag and a hat. He had often seen deceased
crossing the creek on his way to his home. There was a bottle containing gin in
the creek where the body was. Austin Davis, a nephew of deceased, said he
identified the body as that of Jas.Hately,
whom he had last seen alive on August 27, when he left home to go to Yass.
Deceased was in good health and spirits. He was only a moderate drinker. It
appeared to witness that deceased had crossed the creek and had been looking for
something he had dropped, probably his pipe, when he must have stumbled and fell
into the creek, striking his head on a pointed stone, apparently knocking
himself unconscious. In answer to Sgt. Shipway,
witness said there was blood on a sharp-pointed stone which he had noticed.
Charles J. Weatherby,
taxi driver, said he conveyed deceased from Yass on August 27 to Coolalie.
He set Hately down
at the gates of "Cleveden" and
asked him if he would be all right. Deceased said he would. He could see that
deceased was under the influence of drink, and staggered as he walked. Sgt. J.
C. Smith described his visit to the scene of the drowning in company with the
ambulance driver, and found the body of a man. From his observations he formed
the opinion that the man had crossed the bridge, probably in the dark, and had
dropped his pipe, and, after placing the meat on top of the bank, struck matches
in his endeavour to find it, had stumbled on the rough stones, striking his head
on the stone mentioned, and fallen into the creek. He saw no suspicious
circumstances in the course of his enquiries. Dr. Peggy
Anderson described the injuries on the deceased's forehead and in her opinion he
died as a result of drowning while unconscious from the effects of a compound
fracture of the skull. The Coroner returned the verdict recorded above.

Description: Very detailed
FATAL ACCIDENT TO A SHUNTER.
AT about half-past one o'clock this morning at the Goulburn railway station a
young man named Charles Joseph McConville was
killed almost instantaneously whilst engaged shunting. Deceased and Head-shunter Linnegar were
getting a goods train ready at the time. Deceased was sent to give the signal to
the driver to bring the trucks together and then to couple them. After the lapse
of about a minute Linnegar missed
deceased, and upon running along the train he found him lying on the ground
between the trucks. The driver and firemen were called, and deceased only
breathed for a second after being pulled out. It is supposed that his foot got
jammed between the rails at an intersection and that he was knocked down by the
trucks and crushed to death by either the wheels or the buffers. It is hardly
probable that the wheels could have passed right over the body, as the external
injuries were very slight. There is little doubt but that the accident occurred
through deceased's foot becoming jammed between the two rails. The boot was
picked up close to the inter section, and bore the appearance of having been
dragged off. Deceased was found four or five feet away between the rails. It is
thought that after deceased had been knocked down the wheels might have pushed
him along the surface of the rails and thus have caused the injuries without
going right over him. Deceased had been in the service for many years, and was
looked upon as a competent officer. He was well known and respected by his
fellow employes,
and the news of his untimely death was received with deep regret. He leaves a
wife and a child only three months old. An inquest on the body was held at the
Court house this morning, before the Coroner, Mr. H.
O'Brien.
John McConville,
night officer at Yass Junction, said he was a brother of deceased; deceased
would have been 26 years in October next; he was born in Gunning; he was a
married man and leaves a wife and young child; his wife's maiden name was
Bridget Costello; he had left no property that witness was aware of; witness did
not know whether his life was insured ; he was ashunter on
the railway and had been in the service for about 14 years: he had always been a
steady man; he had been shunting on and off for over seven years. William
Nathaniel Linnegar,
assistant guard, acting as head shunter at
the Goulburn railway station, deposed that the deceased came on shunting at 6
o'clock on Wednesday evening and was under witness's instructions during the
night; at 20 minutes past 1 o'clock he missed deceased for about a minute; just
previous to this he had instructed deceased to bring all the trucks together,
couple them up, and to pull out of the siding and back the train down to the
box; deceased replied "All right, Will," and that was the last he heard deceased
say; he heard deceased give the signal to the driver to come steadily on to the
trucks, and witness ran down to see that the brakes were secure at the far end
of .the train; when he got about 50 yards he called out, " Charlie, where are
you ?" as he could not see the deceased's light; he got no reply, and he called
out two or three times as loudly as he could call, and ran towards the driver
with the red light; the trucks had stopped just then; running along he saw a
dark object between the trucks, and turning the light on it he found it to be
deceased; he was lying on his back with his head beneath' his right arm, which
was lying across the rails; the body was lying between the rails; witness
shouted for the driver, and they pulled the deceased out; he was just alive and
that was all; it was not a busy night; the work was particularly light, and was
really all done at the time of the accident; deceased had not been with witness
more than 15 minutes; he had been up attending to the mail; deceased had only
one boot on ; witness looked for the other but could not find it himself ; the
accident occurred on the line leading into No. 2 point; another line crossed it
near where the body was found; the lost boot was found about 12 yards from the
body; he had seen the boot, and it was his opinion that deceased's foot must
have caught in the V-shaped opening where the lines join; after deceased was
struck the train had evidently gone the length of a truck ; deceased was well up
in his work, and was a very good man. (This witness was greatly affected, and
burst into tears whilst giving his evidence). To the foreman: Shunters come
on at six and go off at 6 in the morning ; out of that they have two hours for
meals ; deceased was performing the work of a junior shunter under
witness's instructions at the time of the accident. Dr. Handcock deposed
that he was called to attend deceased at about 25 minutes to 2 o'clock that
morning ; the body was in the morgue when be got
down ; he found that the deceased had a few supcerficial bruises
and abrasions on the chest, blood on the face, and a slight injury to the outer
side of the left foot : on further examination he found the deceased's ribs were
broken on the same level on both sides, also the breast bone; such injuries
could have been caused by a wheel passing over the body; death had been due to
pressure on the heart and the organs of the chest ; the left arm was also broken
on the same level' s the injuries to the ribs, which were directly over the
heart ; on further examination that morning he found a line of discolouration
extending across the abdomen parallel to the line of injury to the chest. To the
foreman : It was witness's opinion that two wheels had passed over deceased, one
across his chest and the other across his abdomen. William Westbrook McDougall,
a locomotive engine-driver, said he was on the train in question at the time of
the accident; witness's mate received a signal from deceased and directly
afterwards a danger signal ; they had stopped the train before the danger signal
was given ; he had just before asked his mate could he see a light or a signal,
and when he answered that he could not he shut off steam and applied the brake;
witness then heard Linnegar calling
out for Charlie, and his mate said that a red light was being exhibited at the
end of the train ; the red light came towards them, and then they heard Linnegar sing
out that Charlie was killed ; witness and his mate got off the engine and went
to where Linnegar was
; they saw deceased lying between the trucks ; he held the light while his mate
and Linnegar pulled
the deceased out ; he breathed twice and died ; a stretcher was procured and
deceased was taken to the station ; the train was loaded with goods; there were
no empty trucks; there were 15 in all. To the foreman : Witness did not get any
signal from deceased, but his mate told witness that he had; he asked his mate
could he see a light because he was in the habit of doing so ; a loaded truck
should cut a body in two. To the coroner : Witness's mate had received a signal
from deceased prior to his asking whether a light could be seen : the injuries
might have been caused by the buffers. To Sergeant Matthews : Witness had seen
the marks of deceased's boot between the crossing of the lines as if it had been
jammed in the crossing; the boot was picked up about four yards from the body ;
deceased went in to couple the trucks, and had evidently done so. Augustus Henry
Flood, fireman, said he was on the train at the time of the accident; he
received a signal from deceased to come ahead and ease the trucks together;
while they were doing that de ceased was moving his light up and down to indi cate that
the trucks were then very close together; they were going very slow; witness
called to his mate that deceased had given the steady-up signal, and he shut off
steam; deceased then passed out of sight, evidently between the trucks;
witness's mate called out, " Do you see any signal ?" and witness replied, " No,
Bill ;" they were then almost at a standstill; they.stopped the
train altogether at once; at this timeLinnegar was
coming along on the same side, but further down; he was singing out, " Where are
you, Charlie?" and he also showed a red light; he came up some distance and
called out to the driver, saying, " Mac, come here;" witness and his mate jumped
off the train, and they went up to where deceased's body was lying between the
trucks; witness helped to pull him out, and after wards deceased's body was
taken to the morgue.
To the Coroner: Witness was wrong in saying that they shut of steam before
McDougall asked whether any lights or signals could be seen. To a juror: Witness
believed that deceased coupled the trucks; he did not see him again after he
disappeared between the trucks. The jury after visiting the spot brought in a
verdict of accidental death, and that no blame was attachable to any person. It
is not known whether deceased was insured, but it is stated that he joined an oddfellows'
lodge about six months ago. The remains are to be taken to Gunning, where
deceased's mother lives and where his father is buried.

which were tastefully decorated bore an abundance of good thinks. After the
wedding the couple left for the South Coast where the honey moon will be spent.
The bride travelled in navy morocain with

Obit of his second wife, job explains the varied location of the births too:
MRS. M.J. AHEARN
The death occurred on Sunday of last week of a very old and esteemed resident of
the Gunning district in the person of Mrs, Mary Jane Ahearn. The deceased lady
died at the residence of her daughter (Mrs. M.Thomas),
of Pennant Hills, with whom she had resided since the death of her husband 20
years ago. She was the widow of Mr. John Ahearne,
who passed away at Gunning in 1923, and she was predeceased by one son, Ken,
whose death occurred 14 years ago.
Mrs. Ahearn had
resided with her husband in various parts of the State at which he was stationed
in the railway service prior to coming to Oololng,
where she spent approximately 30 years of her life. After the death of her
husband she lived at Goulburn and Marulan before moving to Pennant hills
(Sydney) were she had resided for the past eight years. She had attained the

topics of the day. Her illness was brief.

I need to point our an error in the wives of there two cousins.
My first wife was descended from John Winter (as was Joseph Winter) hence my interest. Joseph James Winter is descended from John's brother William.
I was recently called on by the archeologists conducting a heritage assessment on the ruins of "Inglewood" homestead to identify the Joseph Winter family who built the home. I am in email contact with grandsons -- 3 Jones brothers from first marriage and a Winter from the second marriage.
I have discovered that the wrong placing of Elizabeth Emily Hall originates in "Biographical Register of Canberra and Queanbeyan". Maybe they copied from you OR you copied from them. Anyway, it is wrong.
I have attached Family Group Sheets to clarify the situation. I have included the Monaro Pioneers reference numbers on the sheets so you can distinguish who is who.

Description: THE LATE W. R. CLEMENGER
Eighteen years ago the writer paid his first visit to Gundaroo with the old Gininderra cricket
team and was introduced to a bright and genial soul, William Ralph Clemenger. He
was the respected captain of Gundaroo, and we were in charge of the cheery and
popular Arthur Flower. Both these gentlemen were close personal friends of mine
until each was regretfully laid away in an early and honoured grave. Mr. Clemenger
was born in Braidwood 53 years ago, and spent his boyhood there and on the
Araluen goldfields, where his father was C.P.S. and Police Magistrate. His
education was finished in the private school of Mr. Belcher
at Goulburn and Mr. Southee's well-known
establishment at Mittagong.
He then entered the office of a large shipping firm in Sydney, where he acquired
a thorough knowledge of telegraphy. At 17 years of ago he joined the Postal
Department and was sent to take charge of the office at Gundaroo. In his early
days he was a crack three-quarter on the football field and represented the
southern districts at Queanbeyan and Goulburn against Queensland and a crack
English combination that paid a visit to the south nearly 30 years ago. He
played first grade football with Balmain when only sixteen years of age. He was
also a very fine all round cricketer, and for many years put up a stubborn
resistance against the finest bowling talent in the southern districts. His
connection with racing is well known. The most notable horses he bred were the
Palmist and Warelva,
in addition to Gundaroo, Chiromantist,
Elvira's Daughter, and others. For many years his face was familiar on any
racecourse of importance in the south. When Clem had the watch on a local
celebrity and labelled it "some class" the Gundaroo sports planked their money
down with a freedom that made the country folk stare. He was the soul of honour,
on the turf, and if any shady transaction was unfolded in his presence the
racecourse parasite melted away from a look of scorn with humiliation pourtrayed on
his degraded countenance.
For 36 years he acted as adviser to almost every family within miles of
Gundaroo, and few people, whether rich or poor, can conscientiously deny
receiving numerous favours from our ill-fated and popular old friend. Years ago
he met the well-known Australian poet, John Farrell, on one of his week-end
visits to Queanbeyan, and a mutual friendship sprang up. Farrell advised him
strongly to adopt a literary career, but Gundaroo claimed him, and a bright life
was thrown away in a dreary office in a one-horse country town. He had many
mementoes of Farrell, and corresponded with him regularly till the poet passed
away into that dark world he sang so sweetly about. Mr. Clemenger
was an honourable, careful, and methodical businessman. For 36 years his
inspectors failed to find a mistake or clerical error in his balance-sheet, and
for nearly as many years he was an ideal secretary to the trustees of the
Gundaroo Common and the local branch of the Manchester Unity. He had been
actively identified with every public movement in the town and district for 30
odd years. He was one of the founders of the Gundaroo Race,Fooball,
and Cricket Clubs, and held responsible honourary positions
in each till the world war put a temporary check on all branches of sport. As
the founder and trustee of the public library he deserves the everlasting
gratitude of a large section of our little community. He took an active interest
in politics, and was a keen and clever debater. When warmed up he was a fluent
speaker, and was offered the solid support of the Labour Party to contest the
Wagga or Queanbeyan electorates at a time when both these seats were secured by
untried men on behalf of tleworkers
of the State. The editor of the Queanbeyan Age offered to sink his views and
support Clem should he decide to throw his castor into the political arena. He
also had the commanding influence of the "Braidwood Review" behind him, and was
backed up at the time by the most popular Mayor in the history of Braidwood, the
late lamented and ill-starred Patrick Coffey. His fine voice was, however,
failing, and he remained a slave in the little office till the end. The deceased
had many tempting offers from tile Department to take charge of offices in
important country centres as well as in the metropolitan area. The call of his
adopted town, however, was too great, and he died a slave to duty, and a martyr
to true religion, honesty, fidelity, truthfulness. When the winter of life casts
grey shadows over our paths most of us will still cherish sweet re collections
of happy days spent with our charitable and, kindly-dispositioned old
townsman. When the soul of this cultured gentleman passed out the book of fate
closed its pages on the saddest event in the history of Gundaroo. J. F.
HEAZLETT.

LATE ROBERT OLDFIELD.
Robert Oldfield, who died in Mudgee on Thursday last, aged 76
years, was one of the sturdy pioneers who helped materially in
the advancement of this district.
Born at Richmond, he came to Mudgee with his parents when quite young, and
afterwards settled at Cudgegong, where he followed farming pursuits for about
half a century. Like so many of the pioneers he dearly loved a political fight,
and was always foremost in the fray when Free Traders and
Protectionists clashed. He espoused the former cause, and later followed his
champions into the Liberal camp. A sport to the finger tips, one of his favorite pastimes
was angling, and his big hands are still talked of where fishermen
congregate. 'Bob' as he was familiarly known to his many friends, first showed
signs of failing health a couple of years ago, and althoughhe rallied
at different periods the
ailment from which he suffered gradually sapped his strength, the end coming as
stated. Deceased is survived by a sorrowing widow and the following sons and
daughters: W. Oldfield (Ashfield), G. Oldfield (Mudgee), Mesdames S.
C. Glasson (Sydney), E. C. Parker (Bankstown), and T. Rayner (Tunnabutta).
The brothers and sisters
left to mourn are Messrs. J.
C. Oldfield (Stony Pinch), D. H. Oldfield (Coonamble), Mesdames C.Perram and
H. Milton (Cudgegong), J. Besant (Ilford), and J.Murray (Tabrabucca).
To all the sorrowing ones we extend our deepest sympathy. The funeral took place
to the Church of England portion of the Cudgegong cemetery, the last sad rites
at the graveside being conducted by the Rev. W. V. Thomson, of Rylstone

Hi Ian,
I do apologise, Ian.
William Thomas HAGGAR did die on 31 December 1921.
The 'Bombala Times' dated 6 January 1922 and I mistakenly put that date.
I realised my mistake on receiving your email.
The article was as follows:
Mr William Thomas Haggar died in a Sydney Hospitalon Saturday last.
Mr and Mrs Haggar were driving into Bombala on December 9th,
to see the railway opening, when their horse took fright at a motor bicycle,
and turned the trap over, throwing the occupants out. Mr Haggar had
his thigh badly hurt, but treated it lightly and went home without seeing
a Doctor. The injury became worse, aand he was sent to Sydney for the
removal of his leg, but treatment came too late. The deceased was 49 years
of age and leaves a widow, but no family.
In regards to the marriage of William Thomas HAGGAR and Millie Amelia WALKER,
they were married on 25 July 1921 (BDM NSW 11577/1921).
Unfortunately I don't have a copy of their wedding certificate.
Again I apologise for my mistake. Ill be sure to double check in future. Also thank you for allowing me to join Monaro Pioneers.
