Description: From "The Canberra Times", 3 August 1938:
EDLINGTON-WATSON WEDDING. St John the Baptist Church, Canberra, was the scene
of a pretty wedding on Saturday last, when Mervyn John Edlington, elder son of
Mr John and the late Mrs Edlington, of Tuggeranong, was married to Joan
Charlotte, second daughter of Mr and Mrs G Watson, Wakefield Gardens, Canberra.
The Ven Archdeacon
Robertson performed the ceremony. The bride, who was given away by her father,
wore a lovely frock of magnolia satin, the flowering veil of Honiton lace and
soft tulle forming a slight train. This was caught to the head by a coronet of
orange blossom, and she carried a sheaf of arum lillies.
The bridesmaids, Miss Doreen Edlington and Miss Mavis Watson, were becomingly
frocked in blush pink ripple georgette and wore shoulder veils of delphinium
blue tulle, caught to the hair with bandeaux of pink flowers, while their
bouquets of pink sweet peas and maiden hair fern matched their frocks. Mr
Robert Moore and Mr Frank Webb carried out the duties of best man and groomsman
respectively. The mother of the bride wore a smart frock of mustard crepe
georgette, and she carried a posy of gypsophila. After the ceremony a reception
was held at the YWCA, relatives and close friends of the families attending.
The happy couple later left by car for Sydney. The bride chose as a travelling
frock black woollen material, trimmed with gold, and wearing a halo hat of black
felt with a matching eye veil.

real roses, and she carried a bouquet of roses and camellias. The bride was

MR G McINTYRE.
The death of Mr George McIntyre, aged 63 years, occurred at his home in Park

years was a member of the committee of the Citizens' Hall. He was also a strong
supporter of the Council Employees' Union and of Goulburn Rugby League. Most of
his leisure time was taken up with gardening, and a great deal of his garden
produce was awarded prizes at Goulburn Shows. He is survived by his wife, three

Thanks for the response. I suspected that my email might have met this fate. Anyway, I ended up contacting Michael Hawkins, also a member of Monaropioneers and great grandson of Samuel Stewart, who provided me with some excellent photos and information, which enabled me to put together the attached short article which should be published in 'Sydney Views' (philatelic journal) in November 2018. The only downside was not being able to locate any documentation against which I could compare the handwriting in the manuscript cancellation on the stamp, to categorically prove John Stewart to be the author. I am generally able to do this with documentation on the old post office files but in this case the file could not be located and has probably been misfiled.
You are most welcome to add this paper to your records.
Kind regards
Tony

Sorry for the delay, a problem with a spam filter.

I am researching a postal receiving office that opened at Boggy Plain in 1906. The first Receiving Office Keeper was John Stewart. In 1918 he was replaced by Samuel Stewart, who remained in the position until his death on 4 December 1925. The day prior to his death he was replaced by a son, Stanley Norman Stewart. I am attempting to ascertain whether John Stewart was also related to Samuel, noting that he had another son by that name. I have found a couple of references to Badger House being the residence of Samuel Stewart and assume that the Receiving Office operated from that location. The Office also became a Telephone Office in 1922 and likely moved to various other residences before eventually closing in 1965.
Would be grateful if you know of anyone that could possibly assist me. I am a collector of receiving office cancellations and have a 1913 manuscript cancellation from the Boggy Plain Office. I am generally able to verify the handwriting from correspondence on the old post office files. However, in this instance the Office file cannot be located. I have no doubt as to its authenticity but would like to follow up from other sources if possible with the view to writing a short article for a philatelic journal 'Sydney Views'. Would also be pleased to share to your site once completed.
Kind regards

MURRUMBATEMAN
Boggy Plain Receiving Office N.S.W
Figure 1
The black ink manuscript, receiving office cancellation, Boggy Plain, Ap 21.1914, over stamped with what appears to be, a faint Countegany, N.S.W. 22 April 1914 date stamp, tying a 1d red Kangaroo to piece (see Figure 1), is the only postal marking recorded by Hopson & Tobin (1) from this small and remote receiving office in the Monaro Region of Southern New South Wales. Later, the Office would become a Telephone Office, co-located at the respective premises housing the receiving office and Hopson & Tobin record an example of a Type 2C circular date-stamp used at the Office in 1959.
To the best of my knowledge the manuscript cancellation depicted is unique, as I am not aware of any other recorded examples, including within the remarkable material that comprises the collections of Dr H B (Barnett) Bruce and Norman Colin Hopson, both of which are in the custody of the Philatelic Society of N.S.W. and have recently been made available for viewing via a link to the Society’s website (2).
Unable to locate the official Boggy Plain Post Office file in the National Archives of Australia, I have relied on the hand-written notes of Norman Hopson, in preparing this article. Hopson, of course, accessed the subject file approximately thirty years ago and his extensive notes on N.S.W post offices (3) were the basis for preparing his subsequent monograph with Bob Tobin.
Location of Boggy Plain
Whilst there are a number of locations within the Monaro District of N.S.W. known as Boggy Plain, the grazing settlement identified by that name and at which the receiving office was located is approximately 42 kms from Cooma and 7 kms north of Countegany on the Badja Road (see Figure 2).
Figure 2
More specifically, the small grazing settlement is to the West of the Kybean Range (part of the Great Dividing Range) and bounded by Nuggurrindthurra Creek, Boggy Plain Creek and the Big Badger River (see Figure 3).
Figure 3
Origins of the name Boggy Plain
Unsurprisingly, Boggy Plain reputedly drew its name from the geographic features of that location, some of which are evident in the attached period photograph (see Figure 4). The name was also given to the property at that location owned by John Stewart (see Figure 5), the third son of Samuel and Alice Stewart (see Figure 6), settlers, who had moved to the area in the early 1880’s.
John and his sister Esther occupied properties adjoining that of their parents, which was known as ‘Badger House’, the name derived from the nearby Big Badger River.
Samuel, the son of William Stewart, an Irish immigrant, was born at Naas Creek near Michelago on 6 December 1850.
Figure 4
Figure 5
Figure 6
Boggy Plain Receiving Office
The Boggy Plain Receiving Office opened on 7 May 1906, at John Stewart’s residence ‘Boggy Plain’ following his appointment as Receiving Office Keeper, a role he fulfilled for over 10 years, until his resignation in 1917, following his marriage.
On 1 January 1918, Samuel Stewart was appointed to the position of Receiving Office Keeper and subsequently operated the Receiving Office from his property, Badger House, until his death on 4 December 1925. In the interim a telephone was connected to the residence in 1921 and a Telephone Office established at the property on 13 June 1922.
After Samuel Stewart’s death, his youngest son, Stanley Norman Stewart was appointed to replace his father, the appointment being retrospective to take effect on 3 December 1925.
As well as the receiving and telephone offices, the Stewarts also operated a popular boarding house at their property, depicted in the circa 1920 photograph (see Figure 7).
Figure 7
Manuscript cancellation
Regrettably, I have not been able to source any correspondence with which I might conduct a comparative analysis of the handwriting comprising the manuscript cancellation. However, I have no reason to doubt its authenticity, the handwriting appearing familiar to a living relative of its author who sighted the cancellation.
Epilogue
Members of the Stewart family continue to reside at Boggy Plain and remarkably ‘Badger House’ still stands, a monument to the contribution Samuel Stewart and his family made and continue to make in this remote area of the Monaro District.
John Stewart saw out his life at ‘Boggy Plain’ and for a period was Postmaster at nearby Numeralla.
I am indebted to Michael Hawkins, great grandson of Samuel Stewart, for his access to the family’s archives and for his assistance with this article.

him as "GEORGE IRVIN" in 1949, living with his parents Eric George and Cherrie
Alma Irvin at Bonny View, Pambula (and later with Dorothy on quite a few
electoral rolls) as opposed to "ERIC GEORGE IRVIN" who was married to Margaret Blanchford and
had the father JOHN ALEXANDER IRVIN and that name "John Irvin" is reflected on
the WW2 enlistment details of "Eric George Irvin" as NOK
"ERIC GEORGE IRVIN" (son of John Alexander Irvin) died 18 Feb 1996 as interred
in Candelo Cemetery.
I hope this makes sense?

Queanbeyan, Jane, the beloved wife of Mr. William Hunt, aged 56 years. Mrs.
Hunt, a native of Cork, was one of the oldest residents in the town, having
lived in it upwards of twenty-four years ; she was the first white woman who
came to live in Queanbeyan. She has left behind her a husband and three
children, together with a large circle of' relatives and friends to mourn the
loss - of a loving and affectionate wife, a kind and indulgent mother, and a
sincere and trusty friend. Her illness has been long and severe ; but Death has
changed the burden, giving joy for sorrow and pleasure for pain. The residents
of the town will much regret her death, as she was ever ready and willing to
assist in sickness or distress. Her end was peace.

Description: Death of Mr. George Henry Hunt
A PIONEER OF QUEANBEYAN.
On Wednesday morning last the solemn tolling of the bell in the spire of Christ
Church proclaimed that Death had again claimed a victim from amongst the
population of Queanbeyan. It was the announcement of the departure to his "long
home" of Mr. George Hunt, senior, one of the earliest and most venerable of the
town residents. In his earlier days, the deceased gentleman was one of the most
prominent men of his time. Of magnificent physique, of gentle demeanour, and
universally popular, no man in the community was better known or more thoroughly
respected. But for some years past the infirmities of advancing years he had
reached the age of 79 confined him almost entirely to his home; and he was
within the last few years seldom seen abroad, and then only under the escort of
some member of his family; but for some months past he had been too feeble even
to take an outdoor airing. In many ways it was to be seen that weary wheels of
nature were moving more slowly, and that it was but a little while ere his
strength would be altogether exhausted. These anticipations were realised, as we
have said, at an early hour on Wednesday last when he, gently and painlessly
fell asleep.
In the death of Mr. George Hunt one more of the few links which connect the
present generation with the pioneer population of Queanbeyan has been snapped.
Only two or three of his peers in this respect survive him. He claims,
therefore, more than an everyday notice at the hands of the local press, When
the deceased gentleman, and two of his brothers, settled in Queanbeyan more than
60 years ago, it was only the nucleus of a village. Canberra was at this time
more of a township than Queanbeyan; and there the chief town of the district was
meant to be. It was at Canberra in those days the courts of petty sessions were
held ; and there was the Government stockade ; and the parish church of St. John
the Baptist stood in its classic ecclesiastical proportions though it has since
been materially added to - even before the old school-church of Christ Church
had its foundations laid.
All there was of Queanbeyan consisted of Mr. J. Gray's store
at the site of the present Victoria Hotel, a hut or two, and a smithy. But a
Government township was surveyed here, because the site lay on the old overland
route to Victoria (Port Phillip as it was then called) from Sydney via Monaro,
and Gippsland. At this period in the history of Queanbeyan, there came to reside
in the little community three brothers, Messrs John, William, and George Hunt
young men in their early prime, and full of energy. Mr. William Hunt entered
into a partnership with the late Mr. Joseph Kaye (whose children' are still with
us) and opened as a licensed inn the
commodious house now owned and occupied by Mr. George Lesmond,
senior, and known as The Oaks, then on the main overland road, which led by way
of Lake George, Gundaroo, Majura (or then better known as Pialligo Plains),
crossing the Molonglo. River over a ford immediately below Hunt's and Kaye's hostelrie.
- From thence the road (a mere bush track) led down on to the site of Queanbeyan
and thence with little deviation followed the present Cooma road . The new
township, being on this great inter colonial stock-route, made such rapid
progress, that new premises were erected, and the partnership being dissolved
Mr. Kaye going into farming at Canberra,'97 Mr. William Hunt built the house now
facing the bridge, and known as the Elmsall Inn,
to which premises he had the licence of The Oaks transferred. His two brothers,
Mr. John Hunt and the subject of this obituary, also embarked in the innkeeping business,
the first-named building and obtaining a license for the house now occupied by
Mr. W. Davis Wright, and the deceased the premises on the east side of the town
where he resided till his death. The east side of Queanbeyan was at that time
the heart of the town and most of the business was transacted there.
It was this fact that induced Mr. William Hunt to erect the fine building there
known now as the old Union Club Hotel, but he never lived to transfer his
business thither. It was, also, on that side of the river where the Court-house,
the police-station, the post-office, and other public places stood. At the
period we write of there was not, nor was there for many years after, a bridge
spanning the great chasm of the Queanbeyan River ; for the chasm was not there ;
the channel of the river was but a small creek intersected by a chain of ponds
or deep waterholes. To step from one bank to the opposite one was child's play
and the whole traffic was at a ford between the present structure and the weir
wall. Mr. George Hunt' s brothers pre-deceased him many years ago. He lived to
note the gradual development of the town into its present proportions. Neither
he nor his brothers ever took prominent parts in local movements; but they were
all alike generally esteemed and respected ; and if not workers were generous
donors to the funds raised for all public purposes.
The late Mr. George H. Hunt leaves a widow, two sons, and three daughters, who
all, with the exception of the elder, son, still reside in Queanbeyan. The
funeral took place yesterday, the handsome coffin containing the deceased's,
remains, being . first taken to Christ Church, where the officiating minister,
the Rev.; W. M. White, read the customary portion of the Church of England
Burial Service. After that the cortege proceeded to the General Cemetery, where
the remainder of the impressive rite was carried out. Brethren of the Manchester
Unity Order of Oddfellows, of which the deceased gentleman was a very old
member, acted as pall bearers, and their service was read at the grave-side by
the chaplain of the lodge (Rev. W. Stewart.) There were some twenty to thirty
vehicles following the hearse; but had the news of Mr. Hunt's demise been
generally known throughout the district the attendance would have been much
larger. Mr. H. Lazarus was entrusted with the funeral arrangements ; the coffin
was cedar panelled, the silver plate bearing the simple inscription " George
Henry Hunt; died August 31st, aged 79 years." There were some beautiful floral
tributes place on the grave.

Description: Sudden Death.
Mr. John Garbutt, of Kangaroo Creek, near Robertson, aged 74, died rather
suddenly at Robertson on Friday, last. He had been to the Robertson show and had
been imbibing freely at night. He went into the bar of the Criterion hotel and
asked the publican, Mr. Swan, if he would give him a drink. He was refused,
because he had already, had too much. He sat on a form in the bar, and he asked
if he could stay for the night in the groom's room. He was told that he could
stay there. He went to sleep as he sat on the form, and later he was laid
thereon by Michael Bell and Robert Missingham.
He was lying there when the publican shut up the bar at 11 p.m.
The publican went away to see his lodgers to their rooms, which occupied some
time, and when he returned at about 12.30 he found the deceased lying on the
floor near the form quite dead. He called in Constable Faunce and
they could find no marks of violence on the body.
The coroner (Mr. A. D. Badgery)
held an inquiry the following day as to the cause of death, when a verdict that
deceased died from natural causes -syncope and heart failure- was returned, The
deceased has left a widow and a grown-up family of five Children.

Description: The Late Shocking Fatality.
DEATH OF MR. JOHN GARBUTT.
On Friday afternoon last Constable J. L. Fowler received information that a
fatal accident had occurred at Grassy Mountain. He immediately wired to the
Coroner, and proceeded to the scene of the accident. It appears that the timber
for the new Kangaroo River bridge is being got from this spot, where it is sawn
to the required width and length before being dispatched. There are three or
four sawpits there, and one of them was superintended by John Garbutt, who had
with him as mates William McNeilly and
William Tully. On the cross-beams, or transoms, when the shocking accident
befell, was an ironbark log 16ft long, some 3ft. thick, and weighing about
36cwt., one side of which had been sawn. Garbutt was in the pit. McNeilly and
Tully were in the act of turning the log, when one of the transoms, which was,
if anything, short, and entirely unsecured, skidded, causing that end of the log
to fall into the pit. In a second the immense weight of the log caused the other
unsecured transom to slide off, and the log descended with crushing force on to
Garbutt's head, smashing it to pulp, and catching him in such a position as to
propel the body towards the end of the log which first fell, and thus the poor
fellow lay flattened out with the whole of the timber covering him. Death was
instantaneous. Deceased, it is stated was continually warned of his danger, but
did not heed.
Garbutt was a native of Yorkshire, 42 years of age, and leaves a widow and five
or six children, and great sympathy is felt for them in their distressing
bereavement. A more reprehensible practice than that of sawing and turning huge
logs on un-lashed transoms we have scarcely heard of, and to the man underneath
when an accident does occur it must mean, as in this case, certain death. This
sad calamity will no doubt cause an alteration in this respect in future. It is
astonishing, under the circumstances, that the unfortunate man should show such
utter carelessness in remaining in the pit while such a tremendous weight of
timber was being shifted. Even had he not been warned, one would have thought
that ordinary precaution would have prompted him to step out of a sawpit which
could so easily be converted into a veritable death trap. At the Coroner's
inquest next day (held by Mr. Z. G. Bice) a verdict of accidental death was
returned.
Several accidents of minor importance have occurred in connection with the new
bridge. It is sincerely to be hoped that we shall not have the painful duty of
recording another so shocking as this one. A peculiar coincidence, in relation
to the above; is that Mr. Loveridge on
the previous day, in the course of conversation with the deceased, asked him not
to fail in keeping up the supply of timber. Deceased remarked that he was going
into the bush on the following Sunday, and, "if he lived," Mr. Loveridge should
have all he wanted. A brother of the deceased, it may be remembered, was killed
about two years ago near the same spot by falling over a cliff.-K V Times.
