Description: From 'The Canberra Times', 20 September
1918:
Naas. Profound sorrow and regret was felt and expressed in this district when
the sad news was received on the 2nd inst, that Joseph Read
Gregory, third son of Mr and Mrs John Gregory, of Naas, had been killed in
France on August 11. After spending about six months in camp, this young
soldier sailed for England on the 23rd October, 1916. When his training was
completed there he proceeded to the front ranks in France, where he took his
part in some of the heaviest fighting till the 4th November, last, on which date
he was gassed. He was sent to Norfolk hospital for treatment, from which, when
as well restored to health as possible, he was sent to Salisbury Camp for light
duties and the gaining of strength. While here he was attacked with diphtheria
and heart trouble, the latter no doubt due to the effects of the gas, which
necessitated a further spell in hospital there. After leaving the hospital he
spent a short time in duties at the camp, after which he again proceeded to the
front in France about the beginning of July this year, and heroically met his
end on 11th August, gallantly fighting our abominable foe. In writing to his
mother he told her that while in Salisbury Camp on the last occasion, an officer
whom he had carried back to the lines wounded, recognised him, expressed his
gratitude to him for his bravery, and said if he wished he would secure for him
a position in the Home Service. Evidently, however, Joe preferred to risk his
life on the battle front, although he could not have been feeling too fit for
strenuous exertion. Joe was of a very genial, cheerful and sociable
disposition, combined with a spirit of honesty of purpose, and always had a
happy smile and word of good will for all whom he met. When at home he always
kept the household and friends in a jolly mood by his cheerful little jokes.
Privately he displayed his filial affection by unostentatious deeds of kindness
and kind words. His letters to his parents, brothers and sisters were always
cheerful and never once contained the semblance of a complaint or
dissatisfaction. A youth with such excellent traits of character was capable of
acting on the battlefield bravely, heroically and generously. A memorial
service for the fallen soldier was conducted in the Tharwa church on the 8th inst by
the Rev R Elliott. The church was filled to overflowing in sympathy with
deceased's parents and relatives. The railing about the altar was draped with
flags and purple and white flowers. The Rev Mr Elliott delivered a very
impressive sermon.

Description: From 'The Canberra Times', 2 October 1936:
The death occurred at his home, Fitz's Hill, Naas, yesterday morning, of John
Gregory, aged, 84 years, who was one of the pioneers of the Southern Tablelands.
When a young man, the late Mr Gregory was engaged as a teamster, and drove his
team from Sydney to Cooma, via the old Lake George road long before the railway
was constructed. He was one of the last of the famous band of drivers who were
engaged in carrying to the Monaro. Mr Joseph Read, of Queanbeyan, was
associated with the late Mr Gregory in the haulage of goods to the district over
60 years ago. When Mr Gregory first took his teams on the road, there were many
bushrangers in the bush between Goulburn and Cooma, and many a story of those
stirring times has been told by the old man to friends who visited him at his
home at Naas. Having spent practically the whole of his life amongst horses, Mr
Gregory was a keen judge of horse flesh, and as a teamster he was said to have
no equal on the road when fine teams were the rule rather than the exception.
The widow, who was a daughter of the late Mr and Mrs Hugh Read, of Sutton,
resides at Naas, and the family is well-known throughout the district.

Subject: JOHN SEVERS No 100643
Hello Ian ...
Was following up on a FB post:
I checked the shipping lists and the Feb 1859 assisted passenger list for "Jessie Munn" says
John Severs, Groom, native of Somerset England, age 22 and
Elizabeth Severs, native of Somerset, age 23
However there is a marriage of John Sivers (note sp) and Elizabeth McGowan in Eden in 1862 (#1887/1862), with first child born 1862.
Here is the obit for John Severs:
Twofold Bay Magnet : and South Coast and Southern Monaro Advertiser (NSW : 1908 - 1919), Monday 29 January 1912, page 8
JOHN SEVERS, SEN.
This week it is our painful duty to record the demise of another of this district's oldest pioneers. At an early hour on the morning of the 27th ult., there passed away to his long rest, Mr. John Severs, sen., of Jiggamy, Broadwater Lake, between Eden and Pambula. The late Mr Severs, who was a native of Hamburg, Germany, migrated from the land of his birth at an early age, and followed a seafaring life for many years. Tiring of the sea, he left his ship at Launceston, Tasmania, and came to Twofold Bay about the time of the Kiandra gold rush, and secured employment at Rixon's Hotel, just below where the Court House now stands. Later be was employed at punting and lime burning at the Pambula River. He next selected land at Jiggamy, where he carried on oyster culture, fishing and farming, until the time of his death. After landing at Eden deceased married an Irish lady named Elizabeth McEwan, the .product of the marriage being four sons and three daughters, all of whom are living but one — a son, who died in "West Australia. The members of the family living are : Sons — John (Jiggamy), James (Net-hercote), and Charles (Jiggamy) ; daughters, Mesdames W. T; Burton (Greig's Flat), Gaunson (Cathcart), and J. Bartley (Greig's Flat). The oldest acquaintance of deceased in these parts tells us that he was one of the most honourable and straightforward men he (our informant) had ever had dealings with. He was noted for his great physical strength, and in his young days was reputed to be the strongest man in Eden. He was 73 years of age at the lime of death. The remains were laid to rest beside those of his late wife in the Presbyterian portion of the Eden Cemetery on the 28th ult., the Rev. J. L. Forbes, conducting the burial service.
The mention of him being “a native of Hamburg, Germany” tends to suggest that the “Jessie Munn” shipping record is not his.
There is a naturalisation record in the State Archives index ... I will mention that to the FB poster.
Best regards, Liz

Description: DEATH OF MRS. MARGARET EDWARDS.
On Tuesday afternoon last, Mrs. Margaret Edwards breathed her last at the
residence of her son-in-law, Mr. T. Jackson (overseer at H.M. Gaol, Parramatta).
The deceased lady was a native of Tyrone, Ireland ; and was in her 70th year at
the time of her death. She came to this colony when very young ; and for many
years was a resident of Goulburn, and later on of Yass. Her husband was Mr.
William Edwards, builder, of the latter town.
Her father, who is over 90 years of age, is a resident at Grenfell. Some five
years ago, Mrs. Edwards left her son's home at Rye Park, near Yass, to take up
her residence with Mr. and Mrs. Jackson in Parramatta, in order to benefit by
the better medical opportunities to be availed of in this district. Dr. Phillips
has been in attendance on the lady ever since; and she has appeared to benefit
during her illness by the attention, care and good nursing she has received.
Mrs. Edwards was a member of the Wesleyan Church : and she was buried according
to the riles of that church on Wednesday afternoon last. The interment took
place at the Baptist cemetery, Sherwood. Among the bereaved ones are Mrs.
Edwards' granddaughters, Mrs. W. Bean Smith (of Castle Hill) aid Mrs. R. Hughes,
of Yass. Other members of the family are Mr. Edwards of Rye Park (before
mentioned), and two other sons, one residing at Nymagee, and the other being in
Grenfell district, The funeral arrangement were in the bands ot Mrs.

ago when she had an attack of influenza which was followed by urmia just
prior to her death, and although the best of medical skill was procured, and
every comfort, care, and attention bestowed, the patient never rallied and was
not sensible for a couple of days prior to her demise. The end was rather
sudden, but the deceased lady had received all the consolations of her religion
and died surrounded by her relatives and friends. At Benediction on Sunday night
the Rev. Father O'Driscoll referred in very feeiing terms to the
lamented lady who was a staunch member of the Church and whose vacant place it
will be hard to fill.
It is exactly 43 years to-day since deceased arrived in this colony, having been
born in county Wicklow. Shortly afterwards she married in Queanbeyan to the late
Mr. John McMahon who carried on a most lucrative business as hotel and
storekeeper for many years. The hostelry was after- wards disposed of and the
store is now conducted by Mrs. J. F. Dignam. There were but three
children of the marriage- two daughters and one son. Of these, Mrs. Dignam is
the only surviving member of the McMahon family. The funeral took place to-day,

The single Balmain reference that I have found is an unsourced entry in the

(She also appears to have quite different ideas to everyone else I've found
regarding Joseph's siblings.)
Your indulgence would be greatly appreciated.

Good evening, I am wondering if your group has the personal records for Rev William Baker the first Presbyterian minister in Monaro. He married my GG Grandparents in Pambula, Casper Kohn and Eliza Jane Berry. He registered their union with the government and I have a copy of that record. Unfortunately Rev Baker did not send his records to the central church authority in Sydney as he was supposed to so I am unable to find a copy of his records. The church informs me that often ministers recorded more details than were sent to the government. Hence why I want his records. Im hoping he might have left them in the area when he left or willed them after his death in 1905. Any help you can give me would be appreciated.

Hi Ian,
Would you know where and if possible where I could buy a copy of this book or have it copied?
I am directly related to the Williams family and just found out about this book.
My mother is mentioned briefly in the book as Elaine Morrison. My mother was first daughter to Una Eliza Agnes (Celie) Williams. My Mum grew up at Cobbon Creek with Jim and Alma O'Rourke ( my great Aunt and Uncle) and went to Moonbah School. My Great Aunt Alma was a sister to Charlie William Williams.
Mum met my Dad who was an Irishman and worked on the Snowy Mountains Scheme. I was born in Cooma. We left the area when I was 10 years of age (I think).
I never knew the whole history of the Williams family and I am very interested in knowing who my ancestors where. My mother passed mid this year and left me with a puzzle of names to piece together. Some of my relations I have never met and I would greatly appreciate if you could assist.
Kind regards, Kathleen Gaffney

Description: From 'The Queanbeyan Age', 22 July 1910:
A very pretty little wedding was celebrated at Woodfield at the residence of Mr
S Bingley on Wednesday, June 29th, the contracting parties being John Thomas,
youngest son of the late Mr William Edlington, and Annie, eldest daughter of Mr
S Bingley, of Woodfield. Kind friends had decorated the little church at
Woodfield, where the ceremony was to have been performed, but owing to the
inclement weather it was decided to hold it in the parlour of the bride's
parents' residence. Mr Chas Edlington, brother of the bridegroom, acted as best
man, and Miss Olive Bingley, sister of the bride, and Miss M Edlington, sister
of the bridegroom as bridesmaids. The bride looked charming in a most becoming
gown of white silk, with the orthodox wreath and veil, and carrying a bouquet of
ferns and jonquils. Both the bride and bridesmaids were recipients of pretty
gold brooches, the gifts of the groom. The bridesmaids were attired becomingly
in pale blue silk gowns, with cream hats trimmed pale blue silk and pink roses,
and carried pretty little baskets of maidenhair ferns and violets the gifts of
Miss Leila Cartwright. The bride entered the room on the arm of her father to
the strains of the "Wedding March," which was rendered by Mrs Fleming. When the
nuptial knot had been tied the guests repaired to the dining-room, where the
tables were well provided with good things. The Rev Mr Fleming in a neat speech
proposed the health of the bride and bridegroom, which was drunk with musical
honours and suitably acknowledged. Other toasts were dealt with in the ordinary
way. The presents were numerous, costly, and beautiful, consisting largely of
silver-ware. At about 2.30 the happy couple left amid a shower of good wishes
and old boots for their future home, and although the sky was laden with clouds
every one present wished sincerely that none might rest on the bridegroom and
that each cloud might have a wide silver lining. The bride's going-away dress
was blue voile, with white hat, trimmed blue silk.

Subject: Re Nola Fay Elton /nee Johnson
Dear David
My name is Sue Kimber / nee Elton and the above named lady is my mother.
I have been on and off for many years trying to establish the identity of my mother’s natural father. My mother Nola was born on the 13th November 1930 to Doris Ruby Myrtle Johnson who later on went on to marry Alfred Ralphs. Doris would never devulge to anyone the father of her first child, my mother Nola’s natural father.
I have asked and made enquires for 40 years around Bombala and the name that keeps occurring is definitely the surname Rixon and he was a mailman from Cathcart. Although I was told Joe Rixon all those years ago only 6 months ago I was told it was definitely a James Rixon and he lived at Cathcart. Is there anyway or search that we could find out whether there was a mailman called James Rixon or Joe Rixon. The time we are looking at is of course before 13 November 1930 so in the early 1930’s or before 1929.
I have been in contact with a Rixon but not the branch we want. She suggested I contact you.
I look forward to any light you can give me on how to find the mailman from Cathcart or the coast to Bombala around that time.
Yours truly, Sue Kimber
Hi Sue,
I suggest you try looking at the Electoral Rolls for the Bombala/Cathcart area. Those rolls do show occupation. They are online on the Ancestry.com system if you have a subscription or usually available at your local library. You could also put a request on our Facebook page.

(Mrs M H Rankin), Tom, Harry, and dear sister of Edith (Mrs S S Griffith).
Aged 78 years.
From "The Canberra Times", 9 January 1964:
A link with the very early days of Canberra was severed with the death on
Tuesday of Mrs Jennet Edlington at the age of 78. Her funeral took place
yesterday and she was buried in the churchyard of St John's the church at which
she was married in 1907. Her father, the late Mr Joseph Mayo, was born at
Duntroon in 1848. In 1874, he married, at St John's, Jennet Austin, mother of
Mrs Edlington, so the connection of the family is a long one, not only with
Canberra, but with the old parish church of St John's. The Rev Pierce Galliard
Smith, rector of St John's for 50 years, officiated at the wedding. The
marriage certificate of Mrs Edlington's parents gives the place of
birth as "Canberra", not "Canberry", the spelling generally used at
that time. It is believed that this is one of the first recorded in stances of
the use of the present spelling. Mrs.Edlington's husband, the late
Mr Charles Edlington, was originally a teamster and then started the Duntroon
dairy which remained in the family's possession until recently, when the land
was resumed for Canberra's lake scheme. Mrs Edlington, who had lived retired
life since the death of her husband in 1929, is survived by three sons, two
daughters and a sister.
