Description: A GOLDEN WEDDING.

To the Editor.

Sir,-In looking over last Saturday's TOWN AND COUNTRY, I saw a paragraph relating to a golden wedding celebration. I wish them much joy; but we think we can beat them in most cases. Mrs. Roffe and myself were married on the 9th day of October, in 1823. I am a native of Tunbridge, England, and Mrs. Roffe a native of Eastgrinsted, England. We came to this country in the Argyle in the year 1839. We have eight children living and three dead ; all that are living are married. We have living 66 grand-children, and 20 great-grandchildren ; our united ages is 156. I am now 79, and a hale old man, not the least stooping, and can do a good day's work. Mrs. Roffe is in good health, but her memory fails her, for she met with a severe accident on board ship, where she had her head cut open by the falling of the foretop-sail-sheet, but she recovered, and is now alive and well, and is 77 years of age. We have been married 54 years the 9th of last October, so you see we beat Mr. Hill and wife in most cases. Yours truly.

EDWARD ROFFE.

Description: Death of Mr. Charles Costley.

WE are again called upon to report the death of another old residentMr. Charles St. Patrick Costley, who passed away at his residence, Dutton-street, on Sunday evening last, aged 76 years. Mr. Costley had been ailing for some considerable time, and for the last few weeks his death had been expected almost at any moment. The news of the death of his son on last New Year's Day seams to have preyed on his mind, and no doubt assisted in hastening his death.
The deceased arrived in Yass about the year 1861, and was connected with the mounted escort under the late Inspector Patrick Brennan, having arrived from India with a number of other young gentlemen, and joined the mounted police. Some four or five years afterwards he married Miss Martin (eldest daughter of the late John Martin of Yass) who survives him.
Deceased was the father of seven children, five of whom are livingMrs. Bryce (Sydney); Mr. William Costley, ex-Mayor of Goulburn, Mrs. George Morris (Yass), and Alfred (Sydney), and John (New Zealand). The late Mr. Costley took very little interest in public matters, always being a very quiet, unassuming man, and during his forty six years' residence in Yass he always had the esteem and respect of all classes, especially the old residents who knew him from the first day that he arrived in Yass.
Deceased was a native of Donegal, Ireland, and when a young man went to India shortly before the Indian Mutiny, and was under his father, who was Major-General of one of tho Indian armies. After being in India a few yens he decided he would go to Australia, and having done so joined the police as stated above. The Rev. Canon Martin was in constant attendance, and in St. Clement's Church on Sunday evening prayers were said for him. Great sympathy is felt for Mrs. Costley and family. The funeral will take place to-day at 3.15 p.m.

An inquest into the circumstances surrounding the death of Robert Lachlan, which occurred at the Yass Hospital on Saturday morning, was held by the Deputy Coroner (Mr. F. W. He had not been attended by a medicial man, but had been treated in the Yass Hospital two years ago for a strain from lilting. The horse he was riding on Thursday was a quiet one. According to his sons (O'Brien) birth certificate, his parents Michael McMahon was 44 & Anne Martin 36 at the time of his birth (16 Jun 1861), they were married in 1849 in Newtown, NSW. This would mean his father Michael was born in 1817 & his mother in 1826.

The certificate also notes that they have 3 living children and 2 deceased at the time of his birth; making him the 6th child.
I have yet to locate the names of those children, aside from what you already have listed on the site.

Description: From 'The Cootamundra Herald', 18 April 1911:
Another Fatal Typhoid Case.  It is with deep regret that we have to report the death in the hospital on Monday morning of Mr John Davis, of Bute, second son of Mr John Davis, of Spring Creek, who died last month in the hospital, after a prolonged illness from various causes. Young Mr Davis was a native of Yass, 45 years old, and was married to a daughter of Mr Alex Emery, of Bute Park, and he leaves his widow with six children, three boys and three girls, the oldest (a daughter) being aged 16 years, the youngest (a daughter) 15 months. He recently bought the old Lighthouse farm from Mr Emery, the farm which in olden days used to be the hospitable home of the Hingerty family. The remains were interred in the Church of England portion of the cemetery this (Tuesday) afternoon at 3 o'clock, the members of the local M U Oddfellows following the cortege to the grave, where they read their burial service over the deceased brother.

Description: From 'The Cootamundra Herald', 12 March 1912:
The sad affliction of typhoid fever that has befallen the Davis family, of Spring Creek, has called forth many expressions of sympathy. It is our painful duty to now record the death in the Hospital of Mrs Davis, senior, who was not long since predeceased by her husband from the same cause. A son died last year from the same cause, and another son and an adopted boy in the family are now in the Hospital as typhoid patients. This family affliction is worthy of investigation.

On Saturday, April 15, at St Saviour's Cathedral, Dean King officiated at the wedding of Henry Reginald Tozer, eldest son of Mr and Mrs Osbourne Tozer, of Emma Street, East Goulburn, and Leila Jean Armstrong, eldest daughter of Mr and Mrs A J Armstrong, of Boxer's Creek.  The bride, who looked radiant in an ivory satin and lace bridal gown with bridal veil of embroidered net, entered the church on the arm of her uncle, Mr Gordon Lansdowne.  She was attended by her two sisters, Beryl and Shirley, who wore pink satin and spotted net frocks and carried pink chrysanthemum sprays.  The trainbearer, Phyllis Tozer, youngest sister of the bridegroom, was dressed the same as the bridesmaids and carried a basket of flowers.  The bridegroom was attended by his two brothers, Edward as best man, and Raymond as groomsman.  Gifts from the bridegroom to the bridesmaids were green amethyst pendants and a ruby pendant to the flower girl.  The bride's mother was assisted by the bridegroom's mother in receiving the guests at the wedding breakfast at the Southern Cross Hall, where Rev Holmes presided.  One hundred and thirty guests sat down to the breakfast.  The beautiful wedding cake was made by the bride's aunty, Mrs Herbert McGaw.  The bridal couple travelled to Melbourne for their honeymoon, the bride wearing a green suit with brown accessories.

Description: I have been searching for a William Johnston, and he is not your William John Johnson I9440. However, i found a death notice during my searches at Trove, in the Newcastle Morning Herald ... of 8 Jul 1885, page 4. If you have not already seen it, it reports the deaths of three members of the Johnston family in 1885, although the notice itself is under the surname FRANKLIN.

The first death was Mary Jane Franklin aged 23, wife of Patrick Franklin; daughter of William and Hannah Johnston of Delegate; niece of William and Emma Sessions; granddaughter of George Harvey. Wish all death notices were so forthcoming!

The second death was Annie Johnston aged 21, at the residence of her uncle Stephen Challis, daughter of William and Hannah;

The third death was William Johnston of Delegate, father of Mary Jane and Annie, husband of Hannah, leaving a wife and 11 children.

Hello Ian,

My name is Robyn Michele WILLIAMS nee FREEMAN & I am the granddaughter of John WALSH & Eliza WALSH nee VENABLES, my mother Veronica May FREEMAN nee WALSH was their daughter.  Whilst doing research on my family I noticed a discrepancy with the list of my grandfather’s siblings.  My grandfather’s brother James Edward WALSH was born on the 27th of September 1876 in Tumut.  According to the Monaro Pioneers site a female by the name of Jane WELSH was born to my great grandparents John WALSH & Honora WALSH nee RYAN on this date.  When I keyed in 21164/1876 to the NSW BDM Register is most certainly states “Jane WELSH” however this information is not correct.  James Edward WALSH moved to America as a young man, married & raised his family there & passed away in America on the 16th of June 1960 aged 83 years.  There is also a discrepancy with the details of grandfather’s baby brother Bernard William WALSH who was born in Tumut on the 12th of August 1882 & passed away in Tumut on the 26th of March 1883 aged 8 months, I have a photo of his headstone showing his Christian names clearly as Bernard William, not William Bernard as the Monaro Pioneers site states.  Ian I must congratulate everyone involved with Monaro Pioneers,  the site is such a credit to you all & is an invaluable source of information for those of us wishing to find out about our family history.  Please feel free to email me at any time should you wish to discuss this or any other information relevant to my family.

Kind Regards,

P.S.

The information provided by your Site regarding my great grandmother & great grandfather Thomas James VENABLES & Mary Ann VENABLES nee LOVELOCK was a real blessing for me as I am very new to “Family History”.
