ANNOUNCEMENTS:
Family Story.
Passed down over generations that every researcher is adamant is
100% true and correct and yet one sentence whispered into
the ear of the person beside you and so on, in a room of 10
people NEVER comes out the same as it went in.
Family Stories change over time and that is all there is to it.
Family members omit the parts they do not like and exaggerate
the parts they do like.
In one generation 'pop' bought a block of land, the next a big
block of land the next 'pop' owned half of town.
I have seen stories where people are adamant their ancestors
were from Royalty in Scotland and even place newspaper notices
over many generations repeating the same claims.
Then we find those ancestors arriving as "Assisted Immigrants"
with occupations such as: farm servant, house servant or groom.
All too common.
Family Stories generally have a 'base' of truth somewhere but
finding that 'base' cannot be accomplished by following the
family story with your eyes closed to all the events taking
place in and around that family.
Being able to recognise and admit to the misconceptions in your
family story is the only way to be able to restore it to it's
original tale and pass it on for future generations.
Not only is this the right thing to do but it honours our
ancestors.
It shows we care about how we got here and respect them for what
they accomplished, what they went through and what they amounted
to in their lives.
Some stories were made to cover up shameful goings on.
I doubt the person making up the story ever dreamed it would be
passed down generation to generation and deemed in 100 years
time to be True and Factual events.
It was just a simple 'porky pie' made up (on the spur of the
moment) when asked about an event and then forgotten about.
Once such case:
A man from the US contacted us years ago seeking information on
his grandfathers Australian family history. His Family Story was
"granddad was about 5yo when his father died and his mother
remarried a man who turned out to be an abusive drunk. After
years of drunken abuse and watching his mother being bashed, at
age 12yo he lost all control and hit his step-father in the head
with an axe, killing him. Scared of arrest he hid on board a
ship (as a stowaway)heading to America, where he changed his
surname on arrival to prevent being found"
Research into this line found almost nothing to be true.
The mother was unmarried when she had a number of children all
registered with father UNKNOWN.
The mother did marry (when granddad was about 5yo) but there are
no police records or anything to suggest there was any abuse. No
records of drunkenness or arrests.
No records for the step-fathers death or of his murder.
There are records to show the mother began having an affair soon
after marriage and the husband was suing for divorce on grounds
of desertion and adultery.
There are records showing granddad (and siblings) were being
neglected, by the mother, not attending school and being
arrested for minor offenses.
There is also a shipping record for granddad at age 18, as a
crew member working his passage to the US.
WHY would granddad impart such a lavish story on his children?
WAS it to hide his illegitimacy and protect his mother who was
bearing a number of illegitimate children to (apparently) a
number of different men?
WAS it to "make it someone else's fault" namely the step-dad?
WAS it to add heroism and adventure to a shameful beginning?
Who knows?
Although I doubt it was one long story related in one sitting.
I'd say it was a bit here and a bit there when questions were
asked and granddad probably thought that was the end of it and
it wouldn't go any further.
I seriously doubt he thought everyone would be gossiping
about it in private and connecting their bits from here and
there and forming a whole story. Like a jigsaw puzzle.
I wonder if granddad would have continued with the same story if
he knew the impact it would have on his grandchildren, who in
adulthood, would explore his ancestry and want to check how his
poor abused mother and siblings made it through life.
If they finally managed to have a good life and die happy.
If the authorities were ever seeking granddad for murder and if
there was anyway of finding the ship he 'stowed away' on.
ONLY to find it was all lies!
NO DOUBT some parts of granddads story were embellished by his
family to make a better story.
What granddad originally told his children and what they
passed down many years later would have been two different
versions. Similar but with a few extra fairy stars and smiley
faces.
Family Stories are the Chinese Whispers of Genealogy.
No story ever comes out the way it went in.

We do not have the original documents in family records because of a burglary at her great-granddaughter's home, but the information here provided is correct.
Amy Louise Thompson was born 22 January 1892 in Cooma. She married Harry Thompson (not, Henry Thompson) whose correct name on his birth records is Harald R Trondsen, (his parents came from Norway) but he seems to only known his name throughout is life as Harry Thompson the name that appears on their married certificate and when he signed up for WW1. THE LATE MRS JONAS
General regret was expressed in the Mongarlowe end of the district at the passing of Mrs. G. Jonas, which occurred in Braidwood Hospital on Sunday morning. She was a native of Rhyl (North Wales), and had resided in the Braidwood district during the past 13 or 14 years, coming here from Bateman's Bay. The deceased was 78 years of age. She had been in fairly good health, being able to go about her household duties and to walk into the township for the mail and provisions. On Thursday, however, she had a seizure. Her husband, who is almost blind, and is ill, knew nothing of the occurrence. His calls to his wife through the night brought no response, but apparently he was not unduly alarmed, as Mrs. Jonas was very deaf. Next morning the neighbours heard the old man calling out, and they went across to the house, where they found the old lady in a serious condition. She and her husband were brought immediately to the Braidwood Hospital by Sergt. E. Jonas, who, by the way, is in charge of the police station at Cobargo. The very best care and attention were unavailing, and the old lady passed away as stated. A quiet old soul, she enjoyed the esteem of everyone she came in contact with. She was a good neighbour and one who helped the various functions in the locality to the best of her ability. The remains were interred in the C. of E. cemetery at Braidwood on Monday, the Rev. Rose officiating at the graveside.

THE LATE MR. GEORGE JONAS
As reported briefly in a recent issue, the death occurred at Braidwood on 12th August of Mr George Jonas, an old and well known identity of the district. He was born at Tantulean, near Mongarlowe, 85 years ago, and went to the south coast when a young man. For nearly 35 years he followed the occupation of bullock driver, and always had a great team. He was very popular about the timber mills, establishing the reputation of being a splendid worker and one of
the most honest men it would be possible to meet. He interested himself in racing and either owned or had shares in such well known horses as Grand Malt, Robin and the crack jumper Sportsman. These horses won many races and prizes. After retiring from active work Mr Jonas came back to Braidwood to live, residing at Mongarlowe. On the death of his wife some 12 months or so ago, he went to live with his brother and later came to Braidwood, staying with Mr Tom Higgs. The old man took no part in any of our public organisations, preferring to live quietly. He did not have an enemy. Three brothers survive, viz., Joshua (Nelligen), Samuel (Sydney) and John (Mongarlowe). Two brothers, William and James, and two sisters predeceded him. The funeral took place in Braidwood on Saturday, the Rev. S.
Robertson performing the ceremony.

Tragic Passing, of Mrs G Wheatley
AT FAMILY REUNION
Milton was anything but a typical Mother's Day after the sad news spread that Mrs. George Wheatley had passed away at Bateman's Bay on Saturday, just after a family re-union had concluded.
Mrs. Wheatley, who had been ailing for some time, but kept the fact from her children, had been looking forward happily all last week to joining her brothers and sisters at a family re-union on Saturday night at the home of her sister, Mrs. L. Knight, at Bateman's Bay, for which, almost every member of her family had gathered. She was driven down by a relative on Saturday morning, and joined the famlly, the Austins, one cousin she had not seen for 30 years for the evening. They had planned to make a pilgrimage to their parents' grave at Nelligen on Sunday.
Just as the party was about to break up, Mrs. Wheatley took a 'turn,' and, although the local doctor was summoned and was on the spot within a few minutes, she was beyond their aid, having passed away. Word was sent to her family in Milton, and Mr. Wheatley lost no time in hurrying to the Bay, followed shortly afterwards by other members of the family.
BORN IN NELLIGEN DISTRICT
'Born in the Nelligen district, her parents were the late Mr. and Mrs Herbert Austin, who were well-known in the Braidwood district before they settled in the Nelligen district. A genuine type of the Australian country wife and mother, she married her husband at Moruya in 1912, and they had a family of seven, most of whom still live in this district. Residents of this district will tell you of her wonderful neighbourly spirit and actions, and that she was never known to decline aid to neighbours, near and far, even at great inconvenience to herself. Only a few days before her death she was consoling a neighbour whose husband had been admitted to hospital with serious injuries, although she, herself, was far from well. Her children idolised her, and everyone in the district respected her for her sterling womanly character, and there was many a silent tear in the homes of this and the Nelligen district when the terrible news of her passing circulated the district between Milton and Ulladulla and along the banks of the Clyde River, where she had so many friends. She will be sadly missed from among us, and we join with the whole of the community in extending deepest sympathy to the bereaved husband and family.
LONG FUNERAL CORTEGE.
The funeral, which moved from their home in Milton on Monday morning, following a short service at the home, was one of the largest ever seen in the district, consisting of about sixty cars, which brought people from as far south as Bateman's Bay and Moruya and from Braidwood on the Tablelands. The service at the Sandridge, Cemetery was conducted by the Rector of Milton, Rev. Sherlock, who also conducted the service at the home. At the conclusion of the service the mound was covered with over 100 floral trokens of the love and esteem in which she was held. It was a great, tribute to a fine woman and wife and mother. To mourn their loss she has left her husband, four sons and three daughters. They are: Messrs. Jack, William. Keith (Corrimal), and Kevin, and Mesdames F. Higgins (Doreen), Jack Mathie (Shyllis), and S. Maguire (Shirley) and a number of grandchildren. Her sisters include Mesdames L. Knight and Brennan (Bateman's Bay), H. Muller (Botany), L. Honan and H. Backhouse (Moruya), and brothers are Messrs. W., J., H., and C. Austin. Milton 'Times.'

The cause of death was produced by her clothes catching fire whilst washing some clothes some distance from her father's house. The deceased, who was a very quiet, unassuming man, was well known and generally respected in Braidwood, where he had resided with his sister for the last 17 years. He was born at Brooman 63 years ago, and in his young days worked around there and at Nelligen. At the latter place he was very well known, and had many warm friends there. A spill from a horse when he was only a young man left him with an injured hip, which prevented him from doing any strenuous work afterwards. There was no better hearted man than "Bill" Hibberd, nor one more unostentatious. The children about the town all knew him and found in him a firm friend.
He had not married. A brother, Fred, of Newcastle, and four sisters survive, viz.. Mrs. Sattler (West Maitland), Mrs Newport Melbourne), Mrs. Boyd (Newcastle) and Mrs. R Backhouse (Braidwood). One brother predeceased him. The funeral on Sunday was well attended, Rev. Father Downey performing the last sad rites.

THE PASSING OF THE PIONEERS
Mr Joseph Hibberd, an old resident of the Milton district, died in the Braidwood Hospital on Wednesday at the age of 75 years. Senile decay was the primary cause of death. The deceased was the father of Mrs. R. Backhouse, of this town, and was generally esteemed by all who knew him as an honest, upright, industrious citizen. The funeral, which took place in Braidwood yesterday afternoon, was well attended.

SUDDEN DEATH
An awfully sudden death occurred at Nelligen on Monday, which shocked the little township. A very old and respected resident, Mr Charles McCauley, who had lived in the village for the whole of his life, was on his way to attend the sports. His home is less than a quarter of a mile away, and he was walking along the road when he met a man named Heycock. He stopped and yarned for a few minutes. In the course of the conversation he suddenly dropped dead. The old chap, who was about 60 years of age, leaves a widow and family of five, the youngest being about 10, to mourn his loss. The deceased, who was well liked and generally respected in the village had never had a day's serious illness in his life.

Mr James J. Jonas, a very old resident of the Braidwood district, was the third life which was mowed down by that grim reaper, Death. He died at his residence at Mongarlowe, on Friday last at the ripe age of 76. Up to a few years before his death he was in his usual health and taken up with his ordinary duties, having always led an active life until he was called away to the more peaceful walks of the life to come. He leaves a family of six sons and one daughter, all grown up, his wife having predeceased him some years since.
The funeral of deceased took place on Sunday and was largely attended. He was through life a quiet unobtrusive man, plodding along industriously in his own steady way and earning the respect of all.

DEATH OF MRS. ISABELLA
. FRANCES McCAULEY.
Member of one of the pioneer families of the Clyde River, Mrs. Ernest McCauley died suddenly in Sydney on Thursday last, her death coming as a great shock to her relatives and numerous friends throughout the district between Bateman's Bay and Milton.
Mrs. McCauley had been staying in Sydney to be near her husband, Mr. Ernest McCauley, who is a patient in Prince Henry Hospital; at the time of her death, and the news of her sudden passing away caused an atmosphere of gloom to spread over the whole of the district in which she had lived and was so loved and respected by everyone.
Born at Currowan, on the Clyde, she married Mr. McCauley and lived there for some time before coming to Termeil to live, among her own family.
The interment took place at Nelligen Catholic Cemetery last Sunday, in the presence of a large gathering of relatives and friends, who came from all over the South Coast and Tablelands to pay their last respects to her.
Before the funeral moved off from Milton Star of the Sea Church, Rev. Fr. Brohan recited the Rosary and Benediction. He also conducted the service at the graveside.
The deceased lady was laid to rest beside her mother, the late Mrs. Margaret Rixon, and her brother James, She is survived by her sisters Pearl (Mrs. A. Hearne), Agatha (Mrs. J. Backhouse), and Miss May Rixon, and her husband.
The mound on the grave was covered with many beautiful wreaths, which were sent by sympathisers from all over the coast and tablelands. Milton Times, 8/6/51.

The Late Mrs. Murray.
The death occurred, on Monday night, at her residence, "Rissmore," Conjola, of Mrs. Murray, relict of the late Mr. Jas. Murray, and mother of Councillor C. M. Murray, J.P. The deceased lady, who was in her 83rd year, had been in failing health for some time in fact, she never quite recovered from the effects of an accident which resulted in a bad fracture of the leg some years back. The late Mrs Murray was one of the worthy pioneers who have done so much to make these South Coast districts the progressive centers they are to day. She was a native of historic Londonderry, Ireland, where she was born on the 13th April, 1826. She came to New South Wales when very young with her father, the late Mr B. McCauley, and other members of the family.
After completing her education at Miss Cosgrove's private school at Windsor, she went to reside with her parents at Wollongong, where, after the lapse of several years, she married Mr James Murray, and made her home with him at the Heifer Station, or as it has been known for many years "Rissmore," in the Milton district. Those who have visited that comfortable homestead can bear testimony to the open hearted generosity and good nature displayed by the genial master and his better half. They were a grand couple, worthy of each other, and honored by all who had the privilege of their acquaintance. The "Squire of Rissmore" departed this life a dozen years ago, and was laid to rest on the estate; now his partner joins him in that long sleep which shall be broken only on the Resurrection Morn. They did their duty to themselves, to each other, to their children, to their Church, and to the community in which they lived, and now may they both rest in peace. To the bereaved family we offer our deepest sympathy in the loss of a good mother and a truly Christian woman.

Death of Mr. Charles McCauley
A Nelligen correspondent writes :
On Monday, 26th July, there was laid to rest in the Nelligen cemetery the mortal remains of Charles McCauley, senior, who died at his residence " Moville " Ryan's Creek, in his 87th year. The deceased gentleman, was born at Moville, County Donegal, Ireland. He left Ireland with his parents (the late Mr and Mrs. Bernard McCauley) when two years of age. On arriving in N.S.W. the family went to live at Wollongong. Some years later they moved to Broulee, where they kept the first hotel in that district. They returned to Wollongong some years later, having purchased the Harp Inn Hotel from Mr. H. Osborn. Twenty years later Mr. McCauley, with his brothers James, Robert, John, George and William and their sister, the late Mrs. Jas. Murray, of Conjola, moved to the Clyde River district, their father having purchased a large property at Mulwhy and Currowan where they commenced farming and grazing on an extensive scale. They built their own vessel (the Revenge) for lifting their produce for the Sydney and coastal markets, making regular trips in the season. Some years later the deceased bought a property from Mr. Manning at Ryan's Creek, where he resided almost continuously till the time of his death. After moving to this property he married Miss Quinn, a niece of the late Mr. T. Flood, who predeceased him by about 30 years.
In common with his brothers, Mr. McCauley was a keen sportsman, and owned several noted racehorses. The names of Ben Bolt, Sportsman, Colleen Bawn, Ruby, The Gem, and Emerald will recall old memories amongst the older hands of the sporting fraternity. He refused an offer of 1000 pound for Sportsman, who had an unbroken series of successes on the turf.
Mr. McCauley's honesty as a sportsman was never questioned; to the day of his death he prided himself on the fact that he had always been a straight goer.
On one occasion, having reason to doubt the bona-fides of his jockey he rode his horse himself being then 72 years of age surely a record for the State.
This is one of a number of instances of his plunk and high spirit. On another occasion, he was returning home on horseback when he found that a well-known outlaw known as Yellow Jimmy was trying to break into a house in which two girls had shut themselves up. When ordered to clear out Jimmy presented a gun and threatened to shoot. The answer was prompt and to the point. Mr. McCauley spurred forward with uplifted whip as Jimmy's gun missed fired and in a few moments the outlaw was running for his life covered with bruises and with his clothing cut to pieces with the whip. On another occasion Jimmy was making for Bolaro on a valuable stolen horse. Mr. McCauley intercepted him and pulled the bridle off the horse which promptly bolted towards a sliprail, which he jumped, leaving Jimmy on the road to make his way on foot. Jimmy was soon afterwards captured by Constable Gilder, assisted by Mr. A. E. Webber, of Nelligen; the plan for his capture being suggested by Mr. McCauley.
Deceased was one of the pioneers of the Clyde River, and his name is closely connected with the progress and development of the district. He was a most devoted adherent of his church, attending regularly up till a short time before his death. He contributed liberally towards the building of the Nelligen R.C. Church and the beautifying of the church grounds, and was keenly interested in all charitable movements. With a kind word and a smile for everyone, he had many friends, who will mourn his loss and think with kindly memories of him. He was the last of a band of pioneering brothers, whose names will always be associated with the early days on the Clyde River.
During his last illness he was devotedly nursed by Mrs. James McCauley, junr.
The funeral was one of the largest ever seen in the district. The burial service was read, and the last prayers at the graveside were said by Rev. Father O'Sullivan P.P. assisted by the Rev. Fathers McDade and Carson.

DEATH OF JAMES McCAULEY, SENR.
(From our Nelligen Correspondent.)
"In the midst of life we are in death".
Every now and then the full solemn import of these words come home to us some old familiar landmark is removed from life's devious road. The time beaten mile stones seem farther apart and many resting places dot the track. The way ahead looks lonesome in its curves, and much of the music of the past dies out with voices heard no more. It is well that times misty pall compassionately rolls forgetfulness around, or in a larger sense, sanctifies the sorrows that have been, what appeared rugged in the garish light of day, grows softer when the moonlight of memory falls on the scene.
One by one the patriarchs of the district are passing away. In the death of James McCauley this district has lost one of its earliest pioneers and most respected residents. The deceased gentleman reached the ripe age of 79, and as his mental faculties were unimpaired to the last, the memory particularly being well preserved, he was enabled to narrate much of peculiar interest relative to the early history of the South Coast district. We are privileged to place before our readers some interesting details of his life. Mr McCaulev, who came from a good old Irish family, was born in Londonderry in 1826. His parents were profitably engaged in commercial pursuits and left Ireland in 1838 for Australia.
On their arrival in this State they settled down in Wollongong and soon started a lucrative combined hotel and storekeeping business. Later on they started a branch at Broulee which was then the only shipping port, and opened the first hotel in the Moruya district.' At this time the subject of our sketch was completing his education in Lyndhurst College, Sydney, and had for a class mate the late W. B. Dalley. A yearning for pastoral life led him back to this district to look after his father's interest in the Broulee and Clyde River properties.
Here he married Miss Margaret Heffernan, eldest daughter of Edmond Heffernan, Esq., of Moruya Seven sons (all living) resulted from this union Bernard, James, Edward, Patrick, and Vincent, engaged in agriculture; Joseph, Dept. of Public Instruction (now temporarily in charge of Helensburgh Superior Public School) ; Roger, telegraphist in Queensland branch of Commonwealth Dept.
The deceased gentleman owned the first schooner, 'The Revenge,' and piloted the first steamer, that ever entered the Clyde.
He took an active interest in the turf, was an excellent judge of horseflesh, frequently acted as handicapper in big events, and in the Sportsman and other yet well remembered cracks owned some of the best race horses that ever stripped on the South Coast, Mr McCauley left numerous relatives five of his brothers are settled in the district. The late Mrs Davis and Beatson, Wollongong, and Mrs Murray, of Milton, were his sisters. Rev Father Cassidy and Dr Quilter were with him at the last. Fortified by the last rites of the church, of which he had so long been a valued member, and surrounded by his dearest ones, the old gentleman peacefully and hopefully passed away into the calm of the Eternal Land. Last Sunday week despite heavy rain, an unusually large concourse, of people representatives of every part of the district, followed his remains to the Catholic portion of the Nelligen cemetery. Few there were who gazed unmoved as the flower reathed coffin was lowered in the grave amid the solemn sonorous chant of the Latin service and the sobs of the bereaved.
He is gone from the paths that he walked in the prime of a life that was spent in the land that we love. He has crossed the dark bar on a billow of time, and entered his rest in the harbor above.

The death occurred on Wednesday, at a Parramatta private hospital, of a very old native of the State, in the person of Mrs Margaret McCauley, widow of the late Robert McCauley, of Nelligen, Clyde River. For the past twelve years, Mrs McCauley had lived at Parramatta, with her youngest daughter, Mrs Archie Taylor, of Fennell-street. Despite her advanced years, she enjoyed excellent health until a few months ago, when she was attacked by an internal trouble, which hastened her end. Mrs McCauley was born on the South Coast, and until she came to Parramatta, the whole of her life had been spent on a farm. Her husband was one of the pioneers of the South Coast, and, in the early days, had a thrilling experience with bushrangers.
Mr McCauley predeceased his wife by a number of years. Deceased is survived by a grown-up family of three sons and five daughters. The remains were conveyed to Nelligen, on Thursday, and where interred in the local Catholic Cemetery.

OBITUARY.
MRS. L. K. RYAN.
The death occurred on Sunday, 4th February, at Runnymede House, Runnyford, near Nelligen, of Mrs. Laura Kate Ryan, in her 94th year. Her husband, the late Mr. Michael Ryan, predeceased her some 20 years ago.
Until little more than a week before her death Mrs. Ryan had enjoyed remarkably good health throughout her long life. Her death resulted from a fall at her home in which she sustained a broken thigh. Until that accident occurred she had been active and mentally alert, spending much of her time tending her garden.
She was one of a family of eleven children, being the third daughter of the late William Austin and his wife, Catherine. All her brothers and sisters had predeceased her. Her own family comprised five sons and five daughters, viz, Timothy Lawrence, Austin John, Herbert Patrick, and William Joseph, all of Runnyford, Michael Ernest, of Nelligen; Kate (Mrs. A. McDonell, Taralga); Ada (Mrs. F. Sales, Ashbury); Eva (Mrs. F. White, Kensington) ; Nellie (Mrs. A.
Thieman, Nelligen); and Miss Dora Pearl, of Randwick. All the family were present at the old home at the close of their mother's long life. Eighteen grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren are also living.
The association of Mrs. Ryan and her family makes a unique chapter in the pioneering history of this State, one probably not excelled in any part of Australia. The home, a substantial brick villa, still in excellent preservation, standing on the western bank of the Buckenbowra River, a branch of the Clyde River, was erected more than 110 years ago for the Burnell family, the bricks being made on the site by assigned convict labour.
The late Mrs. Ryan, whose parents first lived there in 1841, was born at Runnymede House on November 12, 1857, and she had resided there continuously throughout her life.
Welcome and hospitality to visitors and to the stranger passing by, have always been a tradition of Runnymede House, and that tradition was worthily maintained by the late Mrs. Ryan.
The community in which her long life was spent is the poorer by the passing on of a grand old lady, who will long be remembered by all who had the pleasure of her acquaintance. To her family and relatives she leaves a memory of a gracious personality in whom the Christian virtues were exemplified.
The funeral, which was attended by a very large and representative, gathering, took place at Nelligen Cemetery on Monday, February 5, the service being carried out by Rev. Father Butler, of Moruya.
Note: Her father William Austin was assigned to Henry Clay Burnell and was one of the convicts that built Runnymede house. Runnymede house still stands as of 20.01.2019.

(FROM OUR CORRESPONDENT.)
Quite a deep shadow of gloom hung over the village of Nelligen on Tuesday, 23rd, when the remains of Mr. Joseph Bland were carried to their last resting place. About three months ago Mr. Joseph Bland contracted blood poisoning, and in spite of the skilful attendance and constant nursing he received at Moruya, he passed away on Sunday, 21st.
The deceased was one of the most promising and highly respected citizens of Nelligen, and his death has occasioned profound and sincere sorrow to all who knew him, not merely in a local sense, but in every individual inhabitant of Nelligen.
The late Mr. Joseph Bland was a brother of Mr. Bland of Braidwood.

Sudden Death at Nelligen
Quite a gloom was cast over our little township on Tuesday last, 18th instant (says the Braidwood Dispatch), when intelligence was brought in of the very
sudden death of Mr Henry Bland; of Runnymede.
It appears Mr. Bland was In his usual good health, and about 9 o'clock went to the milking-yard, and was talking to his step-son, William Austin, when he suddenly dropped dead. He was at once picked up and carried inside, but life was extinct. Mr. Bland had been suffering inwardly for some years past, and his sudden death was only expected by some who knew him.
He has often said' that any excitement would be likely to cause his sudden death. The deceased has been a resident of this district for over 16 years, and was much respected by all who knew him. He will not only be missed by his own family, but also by the community at large. An Inquest was held at deceased's late residence on Wednesday, March 19, and a verdict was returned as having died from natural causes. The funeral took place on Thursday, and was well attended. The burial service was read very impressively by Mr. Hunter. The deceased being a member of the Masonic body, the Masonic service also was very impressively read by Mr. Richardson, and everyone seemed to be very much affected.

PARKINSON/TAYLOR
On 2019-01-21 19:34, adoughty01@optusnet.
Good morning Ian,I am helping my cousin's husband Warren Parkinson with his family history. His mother Phyllis May Parkinson (nee Taylor) born 1899 in Moruya, died when Warren was two years old in 1938 and he was raised from the age of 10 by his step mother after the death of his father John Edward Parkinson in 1944. So he knew very little about his mother's side of the family. I have been able to work backwards and found that his mother Phyllis' father was William Kidman Taylor and her mother was Elizabeth Ann Clarke. William was born in Ulladulla and her mother Elizabeth was born near Cooma. What stood out to be immediately to me was the name KIDMAN. Thinking at the time of the cattle kingdom Kidman family, however this was not to be the case.William Kidman Taylor's parents were Albert Taylor and Mary Ann Dinning, the Taylors were a farming family from Nowra. Albert Taylor arrived in the Colony with his parents, father Benjamin Taylor, mother Caroline Taylor (nee Kidman) and four children per the "Commodore Perry" on 1st May 1856. Benjamin and his family had been sponsored to come to the Colony by Caroline Taylor (nee Kidman's) brother Charles Kidman (you can look him up on Google). Charles Kidman arrived in Sydney as a sergeant in the 11th Regiment in the 1840s. In 1858, he had established his grocery and bakery business at 158 South Head Road. He had a private residence, "Cambridge Villa", at Whale Street, Randwick. He was also an Alderman This Kidman family came from Cambridge in the UK.Charles also sponsored his brother William and his wife (name unknown) to join him and their sister Caroline in the Colony, however I cannot find any details of him arriving and feel he may have remained in Cambridge in England. However, I wonder if the William Kidman who married Bridget Sullivan in 1847 in the Church of England church in the Monaro District is the William I am looking for. It appears the Monaro William died in 1855, as per a document signed by a Alexander Robinson a Shepherd, who made an Oath regarding William and him dying intestate and his wishes in leaving his estate to his three children, sons Samuel and William and daughter Elizabeth. I am unable to find a death for this William Kidman on the NSW BDM site for the year 1855. However, at the time of William's death is would be Church Records that would provide these details. I found photographs and a copy of the document I mention above, posted by Terry Davidson on the Monaro Pioneers' Website. He was also has wonderful photographs of the Kidman family and I am hoping that he maybe able to provide details of William Kidman, was he born in the Colony, if not where did he come from and when did he arrive etc. This could help to find if he belongs to the family I am researching.Of interest, Warren who I am researching for, can now with the research I have carried out, trace a relationship with the Australian actress Nichol Kidman. Her great great grandfather is Charles Kidman, mentioned above and Warren's great grandmother is Caroline Taylor (nee Kidman), Charles' sister, so Warren and Nichol share Charles and Caroline's parents William Kidman and Charlotte (nee Jordan) as distant grandparents. Here is information on William and Charlotte Kidman the mutual grandparents. When William Kidman was born in 1780 in Orwell, Cambridgeshire, his father, Kitson, was 27 and his mother, Lydia Walls, was 28. He married Charlotte Jordon on 18 June 1811 in Lenton Abbey, Nottinghamshire. They had five children in 13 years. He died in January 1855 in Cambridgeshire having lived a long life of 75 years. When Caroline Taylor (nee Kidman) was born in 1828 in Radford, Nottinghamshire, her father, William, was 49, and her mother, Charlotte, was 36. She married Benjamin Taylor on 6 November 1845 in Bottisham, Cambridgeshire. They had 13 children in 23 years. She died on 27 August 1895 in Annandale, New South Wales, at the age of 67. Five children were born in England and the rest in NSW in Kiama and Paddington.
I do hope Terry Davidson can help me solve the mystery of the William Kidman I am looking for.
Kind Regards,, Janice Doughty

Description: DEATH OF MRS HUGH McTERNAN.
On Sunday evening, at the residence of her son-in-law, Mr. Michael McNamara, Canterbury, there passed away one of the old pioneer residents of the colony, in the person of Mrs. Hugh McTernan, late of Mount Allan [sic], Micalago. The deceased arrived in the colony about 6o years ago, with her husband, who took, up the position of overseer to the late Captain Rossi, subsequently taking charge of his estate at Micalago, where Mr. and Mrs. McTernan eventually settled in a home of their own, at Mount Allan[sic], one of the best and most hospitably-known homesteads in the Monaro district. Mrs. McTernan was on a visit to her friends at Sydney at the time of her death.
The remains were interred at Rookwood on Tuesday, and among the mourners were Messrs. W. and C. McTernan (sons), M. McNamara and J. A. O' Neill (sons-in-law) W. and M. McNamara and A. B. Jackson (grandsons) The coffin was of polished cedar and many floral tributes were laid on it. The descendants of the venerable lady number about 100, and include 17 great-grand-children.
Mrs. McTernan was for some time matron of Queanbeyan Hospital.

Not sure if anyone has the marriage certificate for Alice BARNES, daughter of Richard BARNES (Hotel Keeper) and Mary EGAN.
It appears as though, she is wrongly shown on your website, as marrying in NSW in 1892, to Joseph H. TAYLOR.
Here is a copy of her marriage certificate, in Victoria, on 1st March, 1894, as a “Spinster”.
I can then see a daughter born to them in St Kilda, Victoria, as well as more children.

Description: A GOLDEN WEDDING.
To the Editor.
Sir,-In looking over last Saturday's TOWN AND COUNTRY, I saw a paragraph relating to a golden wedding celebration. I wish them much joy; but we think we can beat them in most cases. Mrs. Roffe and myself were married on the 9th day of October, in 1823. I am a native of Tunbridge, England, and Mrs. Roffe a native of Eastgrinsted, England. We came to this country in the Argyle in the year 1839. We have eight children living and three dead ; all that are living are married. We have living 66 grand-children, and 20 great-grandchildren ; our united ages is 156. I am now 79, and a hale old man, not the least stooping, and can do a good day's work. Mrs. Roffe is in good health, but her memory fails her, for she met with a severe accident on board ship, where she had her head cut open by the falling of the foretop-sail-sheet, but she recovered, and is now alive and well, and is 77 years of age. We have been married 54 years the 9th of last October, so you see we beat Mr. Hill and wife in most cases. Yours truly.
EDWARD ROFFE.
