Hi David

My name is Bill Hammill, I live at Rosevalley rd Bunyan .

I'm contacting you for two reasons ,The first is to get your permission to use some of the material from your website.

I'm currently working on a book, on the history of Bunyan , from the first pioneers to modern times.

The information that I wish to use from your site pertains to Alexander walker Davidson & his connection to the Bunyan area & the squatters arms hotel.

The second reason is to sign up for your newsletter.

I'm very interested in the local history & have a double filing cabinet full of local information that i'm willing to share .

Yours sincerely

Hi Bill,

You have our permission to use information from our website, all we ask is that you reference our site as the source for any such information used.

Regards,  Ian

Hi Ian

Thanks for your quick response to my request to use some of the material from your website.

I'll certainly put in acknowledgement s for any information & pictures that I use.

There are other families, that came from the Bunyan area, that are on your site that i'll be looking at , so I appreciate your help .

Regards Bill Hammill

P/s Great site, its a credit to you

Tree: SE NSW Pioneers and Settlers

Description: The Passing of a Brother.
[BY GREG. O'NEILL].
The death of my brother, John Allan, who succumbed to pneumonic influenza in Sydney last week, removes a Queanbeyan identity of the early days.
At the time of his death he had settled down as a member of the staff of the Government Printing Office, but for many years prior to that was a country journalist of note in the towns of Milton, Gunning, Nyngan, and Bourke. He was a gifted and fearless writer with a touch of pathos that won him hosts of admirers.
As a bandsman he always held high rank. In the towns of Milton, Gunning and Nyngan he organised combinations and many a musical career was started through his efforts as tutor and master.
As a cornetist he was par excellence. I remember many years ago -he was then at Wollongong -a high compliment being paid him by one, Von Mehden, who will be remembered as the famous solo cornetist of the then notable Faust family. Mehden was struck with his playing and publicly congratulated my brother after they had joined in a performance.
And what melody! To the musical ear it was as the cool waters of the rippling brook are to the thirsty wayfarer.
And turned, to please a peasant's ear,
The harp a king had loved to hear.
-Sir Walter Scott.
And as I write the homely scene of my boyhood days appears before my eyes and I fancy I can hear his instrument speaking the words of Newman's glorious hymn: -
Lead kindly light, amid the encircling gloom,
Lead Thou me on.
The night is dark and I am far from home,
Lead Thou me on.
Keep Thou my feet; I do not wish to see
The distant scene; one step enough for me.
He received his religious training on that old (and to memory ever dear) picturesque spot of Christ Church School on the bank of the river opposite the Old Mill; and the education he received in the Queanbeyan Public School he carried worthily to the end. He was also a member of the Masonic Order.
John Allan leaves a widow who was Miss Margaret McTernan, daughter of Mr. William McTernan of Mount Allen (via Michelago), and five daughters, three of whom are married. The members of the family attended the funeral together with Messrs. Holder and Stuart (sons-in-law) and Messrs. Lewis, William and myself (brothers); Mesdames Holland, Plowright, Coyle and Reilly and Miss Kathleen (sisters); Rev. W. T. Price (St. Matthew's, Botany), and Messrs. Holland and Reilly, brothers-in-law; Messrs. A. Jackson and W. McNamara, (nephews); also representatives from the Government Printing office and W. B. Phillip, the latter firm with whom his daughter Cissy has been associated for many years. There were many floral tributes, including two handsome ones from his comrades of the G.P.O.
Queanbeyan Age and Queanbeyan Observer (NSW : 1915 - 1927) Tue 30 Sept 1919 p.2.
NB cause of death: pneumonic influenza ie Spanish flu;
Correction - widow Margaret McTernan sister of William of Mt Allen; daughter of Hugh + Mary McTernan late of Mt Allen;
? which brother is the author Greg O'Neill.

Dear Ian,

I attach for your information another article that I will shortly be submitting to ‘Sydney Views’, the Journal of the Australian States Study Circle, Royal Sydney Philatelic Club. You will no doubt recall me forwarding a similar article to you in relation to the Boggy Plain Receiving Office, in October of last year. Like the previous article, I think that this would also be of interest to the membership of Monaro Pioneers.

Best regards,  Tony Curtis

Hi Ian

You have the wife of James Phillips, Bridget E. nee Sweeney as dying in 1883. This is incorrect, this person  was born 15/11/1883 (NSW Bdm 16841/1883) Bega & died 11/12/1883 (NSW Bdm 7594/1883 Bega) (almost 1 month old) parents William & Eliza.

I have been doing research for a woman in QLD on this family it has been very difficult. There is quite a few who disappeared into thin air, including Bridget Sweeney / Phillips / Burt,  some off-shoots went to New Zealand & Queensland. The birth and death dates have been calculated from the BDM Index using the "modify criteria" button.

I have done a descendants chart but would have to ask the person if it is OK to give to you.

Thank you Bruce,

Not sure if I'd have any other papers your "group" would be interested in.  I intend leaving the papers to the Queanbeyan Museum – sure they'd be interested for historical purposes if nothing else.

Hi, some years ago I made enquiry about my McMillan's that were born and married in Bombala, Nimmitabel, Cooma, Braidwood areas. There was not a great deal of information on my John McMillan who married (registered Morpeth 1860) mary Anne guearin,n who's parents were Michael guearin and Catherine bannon  who resided at dingo creek.

Ive since found Mary guerin's mother Catherine bannon, was previously married to timothy Leary and had a Johanna and timothy Leary. Johanna married adam Berberich in cooma 1852 they had

Johanna Leary died 1887 bombala st Nimitybelle Johanna and Adam berberich had 4 children boorn in Bombala between 1863 and 1873.. Adam owned extensive properties there, later a confusion over ownership and all children left the area, boy died young and all girls became nuns.

I am looking for any information on Catherine bannon and Michael guearin, gueron gearin gearon guearine who resided at dingo creek est 1842- to 1886 the death of Michael Guerin

Young johanna leary was noted in 1858 aged 15 as been assaulted by Hugh McNeal while caring for her step father Gearins sheep near their Bombala

I am also looking for any info on Timothy Leary senior husband of Catherine and looking for their son timothy Leary in area also.. I know this may be a long shot but any info you may have id greatly appreciate... I hope to get down to the area next year if possible, would also like to know where Dingo creek is situated.

Thanks Trina de Cusack

Hi Trina,

It might be an idea if you purchase a transcript of Michael's 1886 death.
That would at least give you something more to go on.

According to Adam BERBERICK's will, there as no confusion over his properties. His wife was a drunk and he rented/leased out the properties to pay for his daughters to be "sent to and kept" at school and pay for their care until the youngest reached 21yo then the value of the properties be shared between them equally. His wife was to get 25 pound and was allowed to live in the Nimitybelle house (once it as finished being built) but the house was also to be sold and divided between his daughters when the youngest reached 21yo.

Hi Ian

I am writing to ask if MP has, or, any MP subscribers have, any details, references or any information regarding burials at Rockton (Private) cemetery south of Bombala.

John Michael O'Reilly (medical practioner in Bombala) - my wife's Great Grandfather, - died on 23 March 1906 in Bombala.  He was buried on 25 March 1906 in what's described now as a private cemetery at Rockton, on land then part of the property of Alec Brownlee. I have researched the Bega Valley Shire and the Monaro Monumental Inscriptions but without any success.

[O'Reilly, Dr. John Michael was born 1831, Dublin, Ireland; died 23 Mar 1906, Bombala, New South Wales  (NSW Death Reg # 665/1906); was buried 25 Mar 1906, Rockton near Bibbenluke, New South Wales.]

Was the Rockton Cemetery the resting place of just John Michael O'Reilly or was it more than that for the region around Rockton? Is it a forgotten location with no headstones or records?

Cheers,  Errol Jobsz

Hi Errol,

Like you I checked the Monaro Monumental inscriptions Book and Rockton "Cemetery" is not mentioned which indicates to me it is not a recognised burial place.  I recommend you put your request on our Facebook page.

Description: We have a framed portrait that we believe may be Herbert James Brotherton. My sister-in-law rescued the portrait more that thirty years ago, when it was being taken to a rubbish tip in the Bombala area. The clues she was given included the names Moody(Mudy)/Miles/Brotherton/Yelds. My research leads me to believe the portrait is possibly Herbert James Brotherton who died in WW1 in France. As he is only a distant ancestor of our branch of the family, we thought someone more closely related may like to have it. Herbert didn't appear to have any direct descendants. I can send a photo of the portrait, if you can tell me how to do that.

Linley Walker

Hi Linley,

Can you send a copy of the picture to me and I will add it to his record in our database.

Regards, Ian

Hi Ian, Here's a photo. It's the best I could do due to the reflections on glass.

Regards, Linley.

Hello David and Ian, I have received the recent newsletter, and appreciate the effort that goes into it, so – thank you. I had been hoping that it could include the information about the Herbert James Brotherton framed picture, and my desire to find someone who would like to have the picture. If the newsletter is not the way to get the message out, can you make a suggestion as to how we might go about it, please.

Kind regards,

Linley.

Hi Linley,

I would recommend you put your request and the photo on our Facebook page.  I think that will give you the best chance of finding a family member.
