Hello Ian,

my name is Zoe Inman and I am in Perth Western Australia.

I notice your website has a contact for Betty Raffaele, under the Mr. John Jardine section.

I tried sending an email but it has bounced back.  Is Betty still able to assist with queries?

Hello Betty,

my name is Zoe Inman and I live in Perth Western Australia.  I have found your email on the Monaropioneers website.

I am the Great grand daughter of George Inman who was born in Dumfries and who was the grandson of Elizabeth Jardine, his Dad was the illegit child of John Inman (the banker) and Elizabeth.

I have been occasionally communicating with Frederick Johnston in Kentucky as he is a descendent of Georges elder sister Mary Ann Inman. And in amongst the items he  sent to me your name appeared, as he was kind enough to send me a photocopy of a letter you had that was from John I to his cousin (John's)  Esther (Esther McGufflicke), dated 1888.

I'm trying to piece together lots of ends about our family (as I'm sure many people are these days), and enquire:
 - Do you actually have the original letter/s or were they only copies?? If you have the originals, I would really appreciate a good copy if at all possible. Either scan or photo would be splendid.  The one dated March 28th, 1886, describing where he is looking for his son who left the ship in Melbourne and went into the country is of special interest to me as it confirms the "desserters" list of 1885 from the ship "The Falls of Earn" that I have tracked down.

Hoping all is well with you and that you may have the time to help. Or point me in the direction of more to do with this.

With best regards
Zoe Inman

Hello Ian

I would like to point out an error in the death of Michael Jeremiah McAuliffe.

I was helping out a visitor to Hall School Museum on an unrelated matter. I happened to stumble across a transcript of Michael's marriage notice in Queanbeyan Age of 5 May 1908. What grabbed my attention was he was "of Crow's Nest, Queensland" which is my home territory. This prompted me to research his family which comes up with a different conclusion.  So, just who was the person who died in Rockdale in 1928?

Michael moved to Qld as a single man and came back to marry his sweetheart at Woodhouselee (near Crookwell) on 21 Apr 1908. Obviously returned to Qld immediately as first child was born there 9 Feb 1909.

FGS attached. I have found 5 children but there appears to be yet another who doesn't show up in available records.

O'REILLY

On 2019-06-22 18:43, Errol Jobsz wrote:

Hi Ian

I have some fresh information regarding John Michael O'REILLY that will need some change to the existing MP data base for this gentleman.  It concerns his place of death and his burial site.

The MP database states his place of death as "Bombala", New South Wales and his burial as at the private cemetery on then property of Alec Brownlee at Rockton.

His death Certificate NSW 665/1906 actually states his place of death as "Bondi" which is now recognised as "Rockton" (not Bombala) . Bombala would have been the closest NSW civil administrative centre for the registration of Births, Deaths and Marriages  - in his case the place of registration of his death  - not his place of death

2ndly, the  Eden Observer and South Coast  Advocate Friday April 6 1906 reported that:

"The death is reported of Dr J.M. O'Reilly, aged 76, who died at Bondi on Friday the 23rd inst.  The deceased had been ailing for some time prior to his demise.  He was a native of Ireland, and had been a resident in the Bombala district for upwards of 40 years. The deceased leaves a widow and a grown-up family. The body was interred at Nungatta, near Bondi."        Extract confirmed by National Library Australia records.

In addition shortly after his death the  Bombala Herald – 27 March 1906 reported :
Another of the very old Bombala residents died at Bondi on Friday in the person of Dr. John Michael O'REILLY, aged 76.  The deceased who was an Old Age Pensioner had been ailing for some time prior to his demise.  He was a native of Ireland, and had been resident here for upwards of 40 years.  The deceased leaves a widow and grown up family.  The body was interred at Nangutta near Bondi on Monday.

and then Pambula Voice – 30 March, 1906
Dr. J.M. O'REILLY, aged 76, died at Bondi on Friday last.  The funeral took place at Nangutta last Monday.

There is a well known and well documented cemetery at Nungatta which is very close to Bondi/Rockton where Dr O'Reilly died.

I would appreciate if you would accordingly amend the records of Dr O'Reilly in the MP data base.  Thank you in anticipation.

Regards,  Errol Jobsz
Thank you Errol,

Description: Hi Ian,

It's been a while since I've been here. Hoping to get right back into family history again, particularly my Monaro families.

So, to start off, here are a couple of changes for the database for Irene Mary MAIN (I258197)

Irene was born on 30th May 1907 not 31st. She was the younger of twins. I have their birth certificates.

I see you do not have a death date for her. Irene died at 106 years of age on 5th March 2014. (She was buried on 12th March 2014.) I also have her death certificate.

I just checked, but I don't have her marriage certificate.

More to come,
Thanks,  Cheryl

Thank you Cheryl,

Would it be possible to get copies of the certificates you mention to add to the individual's records in our database?

Regards, Ian

Hi Ian

Regarding Faunce, Arthur 'Barrett'  1851 - 1934  , Reference number  MP114277  person ID  I114277
His name is actually Arthur Barrell Faunce, not Barrett. I have attached his death certificate, death notice, and his daughter Lily May's marriage certificate where he signs his full name.
My guess is that he was named after his ancestors the Barrell family of Rochester, Kent.

Also, regarding his wife Elizabeth Daniels, why do you have her place of birth Wollongong, when both her her marriage and death certificates have her birthplace Tasmania? I will send more about her in another email.

Regards,  Heather Stevens

Thank you Heather,

Our records have now been corrected.

Elizabeth Daniel(s) born 13/12/1854 Richmond Tasmania, a copy of her birth register entry is now attached to her record in our database.

Dear Ian,

I tried to email someone who apparently put up some information about William Russell, Cooma, abt 1845.  I have not had any reply.

My great grandfather walked from Melbourne to Bibbenluke in the 1854 and, according to the obituary written by his widow, he worked for a Mr Russell at Bibbenluke.

Returning to his obituary notice, this records that 'For want of funds he had to carry his swag from Melbourne to Bombala, in New South Wales. There he obtained the situation as bookkeeper at Russell's sheep station at Bibbenluke. He remained in that position for some time until he came to Sydney.'

This William Russell is the only person with the surname of Russell who seems to have been in the district at about the correct time.  I would like to try and find out if William Russell was ever at Bibbenluke?

If you are able to help me I woudl grealy appreciate any assistance.

Roslyn Elliot.

Hi Roslyn,

I suggest you put your request on our Facebook Page where I am sure one of our supporters will be able to assist you.

Christine Robertson

Thank you Christine,

I doubt the child below belongs to William Barry and Margaret Burke as they did not arrive in the colony until July and June 1823 respectively, as unwilling guests of the crown.  Unless, she was born before or during transportation and the Reg number represents the year of her birth and not her baptism.

I think further evidence is needed to determine the correct parents.
