REQUEST for HELP

From: Ian Harvey <ian@monaropioneers.com.au>
Date: Monday, 29 July 2019 at 6:44 am
Subject: An appeal for help.
Hi Folks,

I recently discovered on Familysearch that the Queanbeyan Magistrates Bench records were now available online.  Big deal you might say!  Well Yeah, these records show all the convicts that were handled by that bench and had some connection with the Eden/Monaro region.  I thought I had a reasonably complete list of all the convicts associated with the region but I was wrong, way wrong.  So I have been busy adding all the missing ones including as much detail as I can from the freely available records online.  I am currently trying to add all the missing "guests of the crown" for the Broulee bench, then I will tackle the Braidwood bench, and have so far added another 800+ to the DB.

Your can see a list of all the known convicts in the database by using the reports available ...

In alphabetical order
www.monaropioneers.com/TNG/showreport.php?reportID=11

In chronological order of arrival of the ships they were transported on
www.monaropioneers.com/TNG/showreport.php?reportID=18

Now this is where the challenge comes in.  I need to flesh out the details for these people, when and where they were born if not already known, when and where they died, did they marry and to whom and of course their children and descendants.  A very interesting challenge.

Who are these individuals that need to be looked at I hear you say?  Well surprisingly, that is very easy to answer.  As I have been adding each record along with their convict, transportation, ticket of leave, certificate of freedom and/or Pardon and permission to marry events, I have also added a "To be checked" event.  I use the "To be checked" event as a flag so that I can easily find individuals that need further investigation.  You can search for events with or without names by using the advanced search option - the "Search" link just above the words "Home Page" on the DB Home Page.  So each new convict has an event "To be checked" with the words Convict record(s) in the detail field and you can see the results of a specific "Convict" search using ...

www.monaropioneers.com/TNG/search.php?mybool=AND&nr=200&tree=MP&branch=&showdeath=yes&showspouse=yes&cef667=convict&cfq667=contains

Now one of the most important tasks I believe that needs to be done is to add the record images for the various convict related events.  I have previously added copies of Convict Indent images to transportation events, Ticket of leave images to respective TOL events etc etc for the majority of convicts that were previously known.  The indent records contain valuable info on age, place of origin, marital status, trial date, crime, where tried and sentence along with a description of the individual.  Permission to marry records are particularly useful for identifying spouse details i.e. Convict or free, local born or ship and age.

Ancestry has all these images available for download if one has a membership.  I don't have a subscription to that overpriced "service" so am looking for "volunteers" who do have a subscription and who are willing to extract the various record images and send them to me so that I can add them to the DB.  If all else fails, I can go to my local History Society (Botany Bay Family History Society) and use their facilities to get the necessary images, a laborious and somewhat inconvenient process but possible.

So folks, is anyone interested?  If you are unable to assist with extracting the images, there is always the research of their lives and families to be undertaken.  If you enjoy family and/or historical research and have spare time available (ha ha ha) this opportunity is a real challenge.

Any help you can provide would be much appreciated.

Regards,   Ian Harvey

Hi Ian

My name is Darren Watton and I am an Archaeologist working in Tasmania. I am helping my wife research her family history and traced her ancestor to William Chambers who worked for jj Moore at Monaro in about 1828. We know chambers had a relationship with an Aboriginal woman there in the 1830s and the child of this union married another convict James dorman and moved to yackandanderah. Dorman was probably a friend of Chambers. The child's name was Eliza or Elizabeth chambers. We have the 1828 census records putting Williams Chambers in this area in 1828. Can you provide me with any leads - we would love to know more about Chambers, the Aboriginal woman, Dorman or Eliza.

Cheers,  Darren

 Hello Ian,

Monaro Pioneers text refers to Thomas dying in Bath, England in 1897 is erroneous.

I refer to the following Sydney Morning extract dated Wednesday 21 August 1868:

It is axiomatic that he predeceased his wife between the birth of his last issue, James Thomas Davey on 14 Sep 1845 and the death of his wife Elizabeth nee GARRETT on 16 Jul 1878.

The last record I can find is the baptism of his last son James Thomas on 23 Aug 1855, vide Mormon film FHL 993966. I do not have a copy, but an acquisition may narrow the parameters before or after 23 Aug 1855. He does not appear in NSW or Victoria BDM’s including boolean searches. TROVE is also a negative yield.

CONCLUSION:

William Thomas DAVEY died between 14 Sep 1855 and 16 Jul 1868.

Ian, you may wish to hold this information in abeyance till I obtain the Mormon film, which I will copy to you,

MR. PETER POWER

A native of the Yass district, Mr. Peter Power, died at Burrowa Hospital on Sunday night last, at 8 o'clock, at the age of 62 years. He was the eldest son of the late Mrs. Eliza Power, of Wargeila, whose death took place some four months ago. He had resided at Hovell's Creek, Reid's Flat road, Frogmore, for the past 25 years and was highly respected in that neighbourhood by many friends who were shocked by his sudden passing. The deceased left his home last Friday with a waggonette and two horses. Later that evening he was found unconscious on the road between Frogmore and Reid's Flat. He was taken to Frogmore and from there to Burrowa Hospital, where it was discovered he had injured his spine. It is surmised that Mr. Power took a fit while driving along the road and was thrown from the vehicle. The late Mr. Power was 62 years of age and is survived by a widow, three sons, Albert (Bombaldrie), Leonard (Bombaldrie), Harold (Hovell's Creek), and one daughter, Mrs. Louisa Howarth (Reid's Flat); also two brothers, George and Fred (Goondah), and one sister, Elizabeth (Coonamble). The funeral which was largely attended took place at Frogmore cemetery last Monday, at 4 o'clock.

He had a sister Margaret(who my sister is named after) Born and Died 1935, it is believed, while Edith her mother was giving birth to her. I am trying to write a story for my sister of her family as she knows nothing and has only just received her Birth Certificate, she is 73. I would like to know if there are any SHIELS still living that could assist with the history.

I would like to subscribe to your newsletter.

Regards,  Jeanette.
Hi Jeanette,

Good afternoon Ian

I am thoroughly enjoying looking at the family history of my family.

My niece Brenda Shingles said I would need to contact you to let you know about the incorrect year that is showing so you could amend it to the correct one.

My fathers name was Norman Harold Shingles born 31 October 1906/1907? Born in Adaminaby (I am trying to obtain the correct year as some records say 1906 others 1907) he died 23 May 1952 aged 45yrs showing on his headstone. He married my mother Ellen Dulcie Church from Cooma who was born 4 November 1918 (information on your site here says mum was born 04/11/1917 mum passed on 6 July 2017)

I think it is incredible with the work you and the others involved have put together all this information. My family on both mum and dads side of the family go back a few generations and I have a strong connection and interest with the history of the Monaro district.

Thank you Ian

Kind regards,  Ann Bulley

Hi Ann,

Thanks for the kind words and the additional information.

The NSW BDM reference numbers we show as a source reference for the births of your parents indicate your father's birth was registered in 1906 and your mother's birth was registered in 1917.  Interestingly, by using the BDM search facility to establish the actual date, it appears to indicate you mother was born on November 11, 1917.  I suggest you obtain a transcription of her birth record to establish the correct date.

Regards, Ian

Hi Ian

Regarding Charlotte MacKenzie nee Solomon, ID 174976,
I have attached her death certificate which has the following:

Place of death:  Coodra Vale - this is the residence of her son in law S Ryrie according to a newspaper death notice. In her death certificate, the informant is 'G Ryrie' son in law, of Coodra Vale but I think this has been copied incorrectly and should be S Ryrie - who would be Stewart Ryrie ID 183279

Her mother's name: Elizabeth Morris

I can also supply you with her dates of
Baptism: 31 May 1796 at St Pauls Anglican Church, Halifax, Nova Scotia
Marriage: 17 May 1815 at St Pauls Anglican Church, Halifax, Nova Scotia, to John Kenneth Mackenzie

Please quote my name as a source,
