Hi Ian

I have started to do some in depth family research (recently retired, and now coronavirus locked-down driven). My family (Kidman) was initially at Gegedzerick/Cowbed Creek, then settled around the Paupong, Moonbah, Jindabyne area in the mid 1800’s. The Monaro Pioneers website has been of great assistance and a brilliant information source. Happy to contribute back.

Suggested Change: John Elliott: ID I83839:

John Elliott was one of my great great grandfathers. Family records indicate he had 9 children: the second one, Simon Elliott (b around 1857) is missing from the Monaro Pioneer’s website’s family listing. Simon was apparently named after John’s father (I125288). The name has since been passed down through my grandfather and myself.

Elliott, Simon, b. 1857, Omeo, Victoria, d. 26 October 1946, Woollahra, NSW (age 88 years).

·        Married Mary Jane Lawler 20 February 1886, St. Peter’s Catholic Church Surrey Hills, Sydney. Mary b. 1856, was the daughter of John Lawler (labourer) and Johanna Collins, she resided at Manly, near Sydney. At the time of their marriage Simon was a coachbuilder and Mary a dressmaker. Witnesses were David Williamson and Ellen Coleman (it is possible both had connections back to Paupong, Beloka where John Elliott had selected land and raised his family).

·        Simon d. 1946, his death certificate lists that he was a manufacturer of motor tyres; obviously a more modern step up from his “coachbuilding” of the 1880’s. he was a widower at this time and had three children:

o   Katie (b. 1888)

o   Madeline (b. 1890)

o   Elaine (b. 1897)

I have attached the marriage and death certificates verifying the above info.

Assistance request: I was not able to find birth certificates (and/or baptism records) for either of John’s two oldest children: Jane (b. 1856, my great grandmother) or Simon (b. 1858). This was explained somewhat by the Omeo discovery on Simon’s marriage and death records (time searching NSW birth cert records was wandering up a blind avenue to say the least). Monaro Pioneers has Jane Elliott (I53612) listed as born at Windsor NSW: can you tell me where this specific info on Jane was sourced from (and/or from who)? I cannot see any specific source indicated on the website. Windsor looks to be correct (according to her marriage cert. etc) but I need to understand where the general birth info for Monaro Pioneers comes from as I have a number of other queries/potential corrections on other family members/pioneers. This would be of great assistance. Happy to take a phone call (mob. 0447 916 595) if it’s easier than an email.

Once I have done a bit more preliminary research I would also love to contact anyone with interest/knowledge of pioneer families in the Paupong/Moonbah/Jindabyne/Snowy Plains area. My family history (Kidman) was closely entwined with many other Monaro families: Robertson’s, McPherson’s, Elliot’s, Coleman’s, Cogan’s, Brooks’, Pendergast’s, Barry’s, Napthali’s, Quarry’s, Williams, Woodhouse, McPhie’s etc etc. I expect that recent advances in digitalising many relevant historic records has given scope to research in ways that previously would have been hugely difficult if not impossible. The more recent info re Amos Crisp is a fascinating case study of history emerging from the mists (the author of Earliest Monaro, Alan E J Andrews, would have appreciated the additional “new” history I expect; and I wish I’d found it before reading Andrews).

Great website! Look forward to hearing from you.

Regards, Simon Kidman

Hi Simon,

Thank you for the information and document images.  The information we have on John Elliott and family was provided to us early in the project and I do not know the name or contact information of the source unfortunately.

I suggest you put your questions on our Facebook page which is an excellent vehicle for family contacts.

The 3rd child of Simon Elliott and Mary Jane Lawler/Lawlor was called Claire Regis Elliott born 1895, birth registered in Leichhardt.

If you recheck the MP database you will see the new information now available.

Regards, Ian

Dear Ian,

I have just noticed that someone has recorded the death of my sister Gwen Hubert.  She passed away on 16 March 2019. However, the some of the other  information is incorrect.

It is incorrectly shown that her first child, Dawn Cecilia Michael, was the child of Gwen and Josef Hubert.

Gwen married (1) to Sidney Walter Michael in January 1956 in Cooma. Dawn was born on 2 July 1956 and was their only child. Sidney Michael passed away. Dawn married Stephen Redden of Gunning but Dawn died soon after on 19 June 1985 without having children.

Gwen married (2) Josef Hubert in May 1966 and they had 2 daughters, as shown, Melissa and Carolyn.

Could you please make the necessary changes.

Gwen is a big loss to us folk interested in family history and anything about the Monaro.

Many thanks for all the work you and the team do.  MP is a wonderful source of information for so many.

Kindest regards,  Janice (Wellsmore) Campbell

Thank you Janice,

Cheers Kathie
Hi Kathie,

The only evidence we have found for his birth is his attestment papers when he enlisted in the AIF for WW1.  He stated he was born near the township of Towamba.  There was a property called Quinburra near Cathcart and Towamba close to the Victorian Border which was home to a Henry Kelly that is probably the place referred to in the BC.

Here is the link to his Military Record

https://recordsearch.naa.gov.au/SearchNRetrieve/Interface/ViewImage.aspx?B=8026642

The following link shows the Squatting runs in the Monaro District which shows the Quinburra run in the bottom right corner.

We have an Ada Mary Kelly (1874-1955), the Daughter of Henry Kelly and Eliza Jackson in our Database.

http://www.monaropioneers.com/TNG/getperson.php?personID=I235967&tree=MP

I now believe she was Ernest's mother given the BC information you mentioned.

Would you be able to provide us a copy of his Birth Certificate so that we may add it to his record in our database?

The only birth registration I can find that might be applicable is for an Ernest Edward Kelly b1892 registered in Bendoc Victoria to a Ada Mary Jane Kelly with no father listed.

Hi Ian

I have just submitted a suggestion for the addition of the name "Mary" to the entry for Catherine McIntyre.  This suggestion is supported by the attached death certificate.  However, this name does not appear on her marriage certificate which is also attached.  In all likelihood, the name was a baptismal or confirmation name that became part of her name under the old common law rule about names being a matter of reputation.

You might like to include the attached photograph on the website.  Yvonne Eccleston, the widow of one of her grandsons, has the original portrait and allowed me to photograph it.  Unfortunately, Yvonne could not tell me which of the two women was Catherine Mary.  But, the photograph of her sister and her sister's husband (Margaret and William Butler) on the Pioneers website, leads me to think she is the woman on the left without a hat.

I hold a copy of Catherine Mary Eccleston's death certificate. It shows she was using the second given name of Mary at the time of her death. This seems to a name acquired by reputation during her life in accordance with the common law rule relating to names as it does not seem to have been recorded on her birth certificate and is not recorded on her marriage certificate of 1 August 1868.
