WALKER

Hi Ian,

Thanks for getting back to me and for the valid point you raised regarding permissions to marry for William Henry Walker.  However, I would need to investigate this record further as I am less convinced it is my 4th great-grandfather William Henry.  There are a couple of issues around the documentation for William Henry Walker, that for me, lower my confidence in it being my William Henry.

These are:

  • Both William Henry and Mary Ann Hogan were illiterate, yet the convict indent listed William Henry Walker as being able to Read.
  • The certificate of Freedom has a note towards the bottom of the page that reads "determined to sail for London immediately".  It doesn't necessarily mean he actually left Australia for London, however the court case records (and this note on the certificate of freedom) give me the impression of a man that felt he was wrongly convicted and transported, and who was interested in getting back home to London to get on with the rest of his life.
  • There are several convict records for the name William Henry (and even more where the first/middle names are William Henry with a different surname) that exist in NSW during this period of time.

Additional information I have on my 4th great-grandfather William Henry includes:

  • William Henry and Mary Ann Hogan were married in Eden in the district of Maneroo [sic], NSW on 27th September 1852 1.  He was a bachelor; she was a spinster; and both were from the parish of Eden.  William was a whaler in Twofold Bay 2.  He was "blind in one eye" and "a little hard of hearing".
  • Their first child, Charles William Henry was born in the District of Queanbeyan, NSW in 1853 3. He was baptised there on 22 Jan 1854.
  • Their second child, William Ernest Henry was born in Nimety Bell 5 on 26th January 1855 4.  He was baptised in the parish of Queanbeyan on 1st May 1855; William and Mary Ann were living in Nimitybelle [sic], NSW 4.
  • Their third child, Mary Ann Henry (my 3rd great-grandmother) was born in Delegate, NSW about 1857 6,7.
  • Their fourth child, Susan Henry was born about 1858 in Omeo, VIC 8,9.
  • William Henry was killed in a mining accident while working on a claim in Omeo for Enos Bishop 2.  He had only been working for Enos Bishop for 4 months, had come up to Omeo from Gippsland, prior to which he was whaling in Twofold Bay, NSW.  He did not own any property and left behind a widow and 4 children.

I have been meticulously researching to identify how they may have travelled from Twofold Bay to Omeo.  It looks like they may have gone across through Delegate but, with William's whaling background, I have not ruled out the possibility of them travelling by ship first to Port Albert or even Melbourne.  I contacted the Whaling Museum in Eden who advised that there had only been 20 years of European habitation in Eden during the time period in question and that they held very few records related to that time period.

Do you have any contacts in the Bega Valley Genealogy Society who may have access to records that could help me in my search?  I contacted them a couple of years ago but nobody responded to my inquiries.

Hi Brad,

I am the person who added the information on "William Henry Walker" alias "William Henry".  The information was first discovered from the marriage index online and then from the convict indexes on the State Records site.  The convict images were obtained from Ancestry.  All the information and images we have are available online in our database.

As William Henry (Walker) married after his freedom from servitude there was no need to seek permission to marry hence there is no such record available.

It was common practice back then for ex convicts to change their name after serving their term and given the time frame involved to move south to Victoria in search of gold.

Again if you can provide additional information to fill in the blanks we would be very grateful.

Hi Ian,

Mary Ann Hogan was my 4th great grandmother and is listed on the monaro pioneers website.  I have been researching her for quite a long time and have a number of BDM certificates related to her. She married a William Henry in Bombala in 1852.  William Henry has been very hard to find information on, although I do have things like his death inquest from a mining accident in Omeo, VIC.  I noticed someone has added that Mary Ann Hogan's husband was a convict named William Henry (with the surname "Walker") and added some documentation (eg, Convict Indent, Ticket of Leave, Certificate of Freedom).

I am not sure who added the above information, but I would be extremely interested if they had further documentation that validates the link between William Henry Walker and Mary Ann Hogan.  I'd honestly welcome the breakthrough at the moment as it has been a tough slog to find information on William Henry.  The current Convict Indent, Ticket of Leave, and Certificate of Freedom don't provide me with enough evidence of a link to my 4th great grandmother Mary Ann Hogan though.  Do you know of another document that may provide this link, for example, a convict marriage request...although there were a number of people around at that time named Mary Ann Hogan so there may need to be something more identifiable about a marriage record.

Appreciate any information you can provide.

Kind regards,
Brad

Hi Brad,

In light of your comments I agree the marriage link between Mary Ann Hogan and William Henry Walker (Convict) is very questionable and as such I have removed the link.

I would guess the Henry's would have followed the overland Route to Gippsland.

I don't have any current contact details for the Bega Genealogy Society.

Hi Ian

I suggest I425883 and I416403 are the same James Thomas.

Attached is Marriage Certificate for James (I416403) and Harriet Cook. It does show his occupation as Miner which while no big deal is consistent with the William & Jane Thomas’ family from Beechworth of whom I425883 is a son).

James (of no know decent) & Harried Cook (long established Kiandra/Lobs Hole/ Meragle mining family) have a daughter Violet Letitia R Thomas in 1904.

Charles & Margaret (nee Thomas daughter of William & Jane) Blackman have a daughter Letitia Violet Blackman.

It is my contention that this demonstrates a very close relationship between the two families.

Further to this another son of William & Jane Thomas of Beechworth married into the Lobs Hole families with Frederick Thomas marrying Elizabeth Fraser in 1899. Elizabeth Fraser was a granddaughter of James & Mary Thomas – Lobs Hole pioneers but unrelated to the Thomas’ of Beechworth.

The chart showing the above relationship is also attached.

I understand you may choose to leave the two identities unlinked (although I reckon it is a 95%+ safe bet) but it may be worth noting the high probability – I think it is always satisfying when loose threads are linked.

Description: Hi Ian,

I am happy to be wrong, but I do not have any documentation substantiating that Jane O'Rourke married a Thomas Duggan in 1868. If that documentation exists, would you be able to have whoever holds it send a copy to me to validate.

Jane O'Rourke was my 3rd great-grandmother who was actually born in Campbelltown, NSW on 25 September 1834. It is unclear whether or not she actually went to Wulgulmerang with her family in the 1840s as her grandparents in Appin (NSW) were unwell - I am still working on that research.

Marriage wise, I have documentation that shows she married a Henry Wilkes in Queanbeyan, NSW in March of 1853; then married a John McFarland in Yackandandah, VIC on 7 March 1861. She had 7 children, with William Andrew McFarland being born in 1871, which would indicate she wouldn't have married a Thomas Duggan in 1868.

As I said, I'm happy to be proven wrong if someone can provide the documentation, however I have researched Jane O'Rourke's life extensively over the past 5 years.

Could you add him to the database, thanks.

Also have enclosed a marriage certificate for a Duncan Thompson and Elizabeth Rankin in 1893.

I can't work out where Duncan's place of residence is.

I know from the electoral rolls Duncan was a resident of Bega from 1884 to 1897.

Would you take this marriage certificate as proof that the Duncan on the marriage certificate  is the  Duncan from the birth certificate.

If I knew the place of residence I might more certain.

Unfortunately I have no oral history on Duncan.

Thanks Leah Burke

Thank you Leah,

I agree that Duncan is the person who married Elizabeth Rankin.

The question now is what happened to them?

Hi Deb,

The information provided to the Centennial History of New South Wales in 1888 would have come from Martin Byrne himself or one of more of his children.  What a "shock" that the information provided is not completely accurate and an embarrassing secret such as his convict past was overlooked.  Very common practice back then to hide such facts in order to present a respectable image.  We include the information from that text unaltered to allow researchers to see what was written but hopefully see the truth from the actual facts also included in his profile page.

I doubt there would be many such articles in that publication that would be completely factual, but it does provide interesting reading about early life in Queanbeyan and surrounding district and achievements, real or imagined of the pioneers.

Comments: Have court report for Moses Townsend if you want to attach to his file?

Bath & Cheltenham Gazette August 16th 1836 Page 4 Columns 3-4

John Cleverly, William Garraway, Cyrus Garraway, Charles Barrett and Moses Townsend were indicted for assaulting George Churchill, putting him in fear and robbing him of 9s 6d and other articles near Bath.

George Churchill lived at Swainswick near Bath. On Saturday night 16th July he was returning from Bath accompanied by his son about 9 oclock at night; he had a basket containing some sugar and other articles; when they got as far as Tadwick Lane he saw the five prisoners whom he had known for some time; he said to them good night, gentlemen; John Cleverley said aye! and then knocked him down. Cyrus Garraway then fell upon the witness, cut out his pockets with a knife and took away 9s 6d. Witness said I have got no watch. William Garraway said search him! and one of them searched him; they picked things out of his basket; Cyrus Garraway searched the boy and took the hat off his head; the other prisoners held him down; they all went away together. Witness remained there for some time cross examined. The boy appeared to be much frightened; had drunk a pint of ale in Bath, and half a pint coming back.

Henry Churchill the son of the last witness corroborated his fathers testimony.

John Hulbert found a basket in a field on his way to Pinacre (?) on the morning of 17th July. Thomas Gunning lives at Swainswick, remembers the prosecutor coming to him at about 11 oclock that night.

Henry Perry, officer of Bath, apprehended William Garraway; he was in bed; told him what he took him for; he made no reply.

Isaac Hall was at the White Lion tap on the night of the robbery and saw all the prisoners drinking together.

Mr Baron Alderson having summed up, the jury found all the prisoners guilty, death recorded

Description: BUNGENDORE.
From our Correspondent.
THERE was quite a flutter of excitement in our little town on Wednesday last, the occasion being that of a double marriage, performed at the same time in the Presbyterian Church. The contracting parties were Miss Jennie Edmonds and Mr. Hugh Harriott, and Miss Isabel Edmonds and Mr. Ladd. The brides were sisters and daughters of Mr. and Mrs W. Edmonds of Ingledow.
The church was most tastefully decorated by Miss Olive and Master Allen Edmonds, this being the first marriage celebrated in the building, which was crowded with friends and relatives of the newly-married couples. The Rev. Mr. Smith officiated.
The bridesmaids for Mrs. Harriott were Miss Grace Harriott, and little Annie Edmonds, and for Mrs. Ladd Miss O. Edmonds and Miss Wolloms, with Master Reggy Edmonds as page. Mr. Abernethy presided at the harmonium, and played the Wedding March as the happy couples left the church.
A reception was afterwards held in the Temperance hall, at which about 50 persons were present, and a very pleasant evening was spent. Both brides were the recipients of numerous useful and costly presents. Mr. and Mrs. Ladd left by train the same night for Manly, where the honey moon will be spent, with best wishes of their numerous friends for their future welfare. From Manly they proceed to Melbourne, which is to be their future home.

MR. WILLIAM EDMONDS
With the death on September 11 of Mr. William Edmonds, of "Ingledow," the Bungendore district lost one of its finest pioneers. The late Mr. Edmonds, who was 86 years of age, died at the residence of his daughter, Mrs. Ellen Robbins, of Haberfield, Sydney. Born in the Braidwood district, Mr. Edmonds went to Bungendore 52 years ago, and there established "Ingledow." By hard toil and integrity in his dealings he built up a well-favoured inheritance for his wife and family.
In order that he and his wife could attend church service they frequently rode 30 miles by horseback to Queanbeyan each Sunday, exemplifying their true pioneer spirit.
He is survived by five sons and four daughters, William (Parkes), Allan (Burrowa), David (Sydney), Herbert ("Ingledow"), Roy (Lockhart), Mrs. Harriott (Bungendore), Mrs. Ladd (Bungendore), Mrs. Smith (Sydney), and Mrs. Robbins (Sydney). There are 30 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren.
The funeral took place at Bungendore, being preceded by a service conducted by the Rev. C. E. Turnbull, Presbyterian minister at Canberra, who officiated in the absence through illness of the Rev. W. L. Arnold. There was a large congregation present, and a most impressive address was delivered by Mr. Turnbull. The organist, Mrs. Kitcher, played Handel's' "Dead March in Saul." The casket was covered in a mass of beautiful floral tributes, including wreaths from the congregation of St Johns Church, of which Mr. Edmonds was an elder, and from the firm of Schute, Bell and Co. Rev. Turnbull conducted the service at the graveside. The remains were laid to rest beside those of Mr. Edmonds' wife, who predeceased him by seven years.

Description: Wedding Bells.-A very pretty wedding was celebrated in the Church of England on Wednesday by the Rev. Canon Leigh, the parties united being Miss Grace Harriott and Mr. M. Harris.
The church was crowded during the ceremony, and as the happy couple left the building the "Wedding March" was nicely rendered by Miss Richer. The wedding breakfast was at the bride's sister's (Mrs. G. Gale's), and over 60 sat down. Numerous very pretty presents were on view. The newly-wedded pair left by the evening train with the best wishes of their numerous friends for their future welfare.

SUTHERLAND

Hi Ian

Mea culpa  -I must retract much of my deduction regarding burial of Frederick Sutherland at Kiandra, presented in the May Newsletter regarding the SUTHERLAND connection (my email to you 2020-05-11).  My wise guide Phyllis Dowling has identified my error in assuming Frederick Sutherland died and was buried at Kiandra. The 24 Dec 1889 newspaper report: “SUTHERLAND December 24, at the Infirmary, in his 10th year, Frederick Donald, third son of Mr. Adam Sutherland. West Pinbeyan, Kiandra. Tasmanian papers please copy.”. refers to an infirmary in Sydney not Kiandra. Phyllis has pointed out my error and confirmed he died in Sydney and is in fact buried in Rookwood cemetery.  I believe the other input regarding the merging of identities on your database remains accurate.

Apologies for my inaccuracy regarding Frederick.

Dear Ian,

I recently located the following information from the AWM website about the sad death of Claude Elton.

He was injured during the First Battle of Amman on 28th March 1918.

He died of pelvic gunshot wounds on 29th March 1918 at the 2nd LH Field Ambulance and was buried in the field at Aisnes-Sir-West near Amman.

After the war ended his remains were not able to be recovered, and so his name was inscribed on the Memorial to the Missing in the Jerusalem  War Cemetery.

Hi Ian,
I have been checking on this from the newsletter

I196678 Herbert Thomas Born to 1. above, around 1895. His enlistment papers (copy attached) 3076 Dvr Herbert Thomas on 24MAY1916 shows age 21 indicating approximate birth date. He married Mary A Sefton NSW BDM 9279/1933. Herbert died NSW BDM 4828/1976.

Attached chart has Irene (1910) and Madeline M (1915) as additional children.

I have been searching and adding obits for the sons/daughters of Frederick John Thomas and Elizabeth (Keown). Not one obit mentions a brother Herbert. All other siblings are named, even if deceased BUT no Herbert.

In Herbert's enlistment papers he lists an address c/o M Thomas, West Wyalong.

I'll keep looking tomorrow but I don't think Herbert is connected to the correct parents/family.

George Edgar did enlist (in both wars)

Elizabeth's death as incorrect. I looked up the death notice and the husband as Thomas and a whole bunch of different kids named.

Being so poor, there's a good chance she remarried soon after FJ's death, as she had young children to care for.

Thanks Kellie,

Description: Obituary.
It becomes our painful duty to record the sudden death of Mrs Corbett, wife of Mr. J. Corbett, farmer of Grabben Gullen, which sad event took place at her late residence on last Monday evening from heart failure.
The deceased lady appeared to be in her customary good health to within a few minutes of her death as she had prepared the tea for her husband and family and was chatting brightly with a neighbour who happened to be passing. Mr. Corbett had just gone out to to draw some water from the well, when he was attracted by the cries of his youngest daughter and hurriedly ran to the house, when upon entering, he found Mrs. Corbett prone upon the floor. Efforts were promptly taken to revive, what was assumed to be a fainting woman, but eventually it became only too apparent that the spirit had fled beyond recall.
The late Mrs. Corbett, who had passed the best part of her life in the district, was widely known and universally respected, and had nearly attained the allotted span, being 65 years ; leaves a sorrowing husband and grown up family of three sons- William, Eugene, and Gus, and three daughters-Mrs. E. Lowe (Crookwell). Mrs M. Horan (Grabben Gullen), and Miss Corbett to mourn the loss of a most exemplary wife and mother. The funeral took place on Wednesday and was largely attended. The remains were interred in the R C. portion of the Crookwell cemetery. Rev. O. Clark officiated at the grave. The sympathy of a very large circle of friends is with the mourning relatives.
