The Parker Family on Monaro
by Dianne Snowden

Dr Dianne Snowden AM has completed her book, The Parker Family on Monaro, after many years of painstaking research. Dianne is a great-great-great-granddaughter of John and Margaret Parker who arrived in New South Wales from Limerick, Ireland, in July 1840 and settled on the Monaro shortly after.  John and Margaret brought with them their children Mary Ann (m. Slattery/Rawlings/Mellodew); Elizabeth (m. Feeney); Thomas; James (m. Keeling or Beale); John (m. Tyrie); Margaret (m. Thurbon/Curtis) and Ann Sarah (m. Stevens/Tyrie). A son, Joseph, was born at Burnima near Bombala in 1842. The book traces descendants of John and Margaret Parker down to their great-grandchildren. It is fully referenced and indexed. Dianne is offering a pre-publication discount until 31 October 2020. For more information or for an order form, please contact Dianne at dsnowden@tassie.net.au.

Description: Hi
in my tree I have Michael William Ryan born to Daniel Ryan and Mary Connors in Delegate on the 2nd of May 1944. He married Ann Cummins on the 05/05/1867 in Wyndham NSW. They had 5 children
Margaret b 1860
Thomas Edward b 1862 D 1862
James Michael b 1865 - 1932
Catherine b 1866 d 1941
Johanna b 1870

James Michael was my Great granfather and I purchased his marriage certificate of the Victorian Births Deaths and Marriages that shows Ann Cummins as his mother. In your pages you have Michael Ryan marries to Powers? Can this be confirmed as I believe I am following the correct path.
Warm regards
Janine Woolnough

Hi Janine,

Our database has a William Ryan born to Daniel and Mary Connor 2/5/1844.  The NSW BDM Index shows he married Ellen Power 5/8/1867...

2001/1867 RYAN, WILLIAM  POWER, ELLEN  EDEN

The VIC BDM Index shows his death 13/2/1882 ...

RYAN, William
Death
Mother: Mary CONNORS
Father: Daniel
OMEO
Spouse : POWER, Ellen
Age: 38
Year: 1882
Reg Num: 2854/1882

I can find no BDM entry for a Michael Ryan married to Ann Cummins.

I suggest you try to obtain either the birth or death certificate for Michael William Ryan to see who his parents are because I don't believe he is a child of Daniel Ryan and Mary Connor.

How are you? I hope you, your family and friends are keeping well during our current crisis.

I just would like to confirm something. I am ordering some more certificates and Michael Smith 1857 - 1907 - was this certificate sighted - as I am concerned it is not the Michael we need.

Hi Sharon,
Thanks for the kind thoughts, I hope you and your family are well also.
We don't have any certificates for Michael Smith as yet, if we did they would be attached to his record.

Dear David,
I am already a subscriber. I am trying to find some information for a friend who is researching a soldier from Adaminaby. I have seen some photos on the site from the Adaminaby Advocate, but she cannot find that paper online. Do you know how to source articles from that paper at all?
We are both studying the Diploma of Family History via UTAS and our last unit is Australian’s at War.

Any help would be appreciated.
Regards Suzanne Lawrence Melbourne

Hi Justin,
If you cannot find the newspaper listed on Trove then your only alternative is to try the local History and Genealogy Societies to see if they have any copies.  The National Library may also have copies in their records that have not been digitised yet.

Hello Ian

I would like to point out an error on MonaroPioneers.

Hall Museum is working with a descendant of the Brown/Southwell family and we have noticed a contradiction between their family records and the corresponding one on MonaroPioneers. I refer to last child (Emily Amelia Brown MP ID I114710) of the Stephen Brown - Jane Stear family.

The obituary of Emily Amelia Buckley describes her siblings as being totally different from the children of the Stephen Brown - Jane Stear family. Clearly Emily doesn't belong in this family.

I have attached a record of my findings to clarify the situation.

Regards,  Robin

Thank you Robin for bringing that error to our attention, I have rectified our records accordingly.
Regards, Ian

Robin - I am editing the memoirs of [Hassal] Claude Brown and his wife Mabel. Claude was the child of Ebenzer Brown and Elizabeth Southwell. Jan Graham of that tribe has drawn the attached tree with the purpose of explicating their ancestry as alluded to in the memoirs. Seems pretty good to me - but I have the advantage of knowing about the characters. Before I commit to printing it as part of the booklet, do you have any comments or questions?

Also, there is an anomaly in the list of children born to Stephen Brown and Jane Stear. The Brown family records have 11 children. Monaro Pioneers has twelve, the extra one being the twelth and last - Emily Amelia Brown, who married Henry George Buckley, as detailed in the attached FGS. She doesn't exist as far as the Brown family is concerned:

Hi Debra,

Your are correct, the parents of Francis John Newlyn are August "Harold" Newlyn and Winifred "Alma" Wood who married 12 December 1917 in Eden.  This is confirmed by Francis' military record which shows his NOK was Harold Newlyn and the NSW BDM Index which shows..

We now have the correct information in our database ..
