Subject: Rial photo identification

Good morning from Melbourne,

I am unsure if you can assist me or not. Over the last two years, I have been writing the family history of my grandparents, Edith and George Rial, who along with George’s brothers, owned sheep grazing properties between Holbrook and Tumbarumba between 1866 and 1908. Back in 2005, before I was really interested in this subject, a (now deceased) researcher who was a distant cousin, gave me a photo of George Rial’s father, William Rial, an emancipated convict who took up land in 1855. This land later became the property of his five sons. The photo is attached.

I am unsure if the photo is genuine or where it came from and I am hoping your members may be able to assist me? Given that the lady in question was a very thorough family historian, I believe it probably is William. However William died in 1867, which initially gave me cause for concern. I have recently established that there were at least two “photographers” living in or visiting Albury between 1861 and 1865 (H.G.Thomas and William Fearne) so it is feasible that William had his photo taken then.

Is it possible or worthwhile for you to include this message and my request for assistance in your next newsletter? My book is getting very close to going to the printer, so time may be an issue. If you want the photo in a different format, I will try and amend it for you.

Regards,

The Snowy River Mail - Oct 1950

MRS. A. E. CHRISTIANSEN

Mrs. Ethel Adeline Christiansen, 41 years, died in Melbourne at 1.30 p.m. on Friday, October 6, after a short illness.

The late Mrs. Christiansen was the eldest daughter of Mr. J. Nichol, of Bendoc. She has spent her life in Gippsland, residing at Bendoc, Omeo, Mossiface and for the last five years in Orbost.

Besides being a good mother Mrs. Christiansen found time to interest herself in the R.S.L. Ladies Auxiliary and was secretary of that body for the last two years. She was a keen member of the Orbost Golf Club.

The sympathy of a wide circle of friends will be extended to her sorrowing husband and family of four-Brian, John, Judith and Jennifer.

The presence of representatives of the Newmerella School Committee, the R.S.L. Ladies' Auxiliary and Orbost branch of the R.S.L. at the Fawkner Cemetery on Monday, testified to the popularity and respect in which the late Mrs. Christiansen was held.

Description: Snowy River Mail October 1950

Mr. JOHN ROGERS

Mr. John Rogers died at his home in Bombala on Tuesday of last week. He was 73 years of age.
The late Mr. Rogers was born in Bombala and spent most of his life at that centre. He spent a number of years in Orbost.

It is of interest to note that he represented the third generation of the Rogers' in the butchering business at Bombala. His grandfather started butchering at the Nellbothery diggings back in 1861 and later carried on the business in Bombala for many years, being followed by two of his sons, John and Tom (deceased's father). It was with them that the late John Rogers served his apprenticeship, commencing at the age of 14. He had engaged almost continuously in butchering for about 55 years when he retired about four years ago.
His wife predeceased him sixteen years ago. His family of six daughters survive to mourn his passing.
There was a large attendance at the burial which took place at Bombala, Rev. Fr. Bartley officiated at the graveside.

Booshand - Chant
A pretty little wedding was solemnised at Saint Ann's Church of England, Hammondville, on Saturday last, the 14th September at 3.30 p.m., the happy couple being Gloria Daphne, eldest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Chant of Hammondville and Norman John Booshand, only son of Mr. and Mrs. Tom Booshand of Adaminaby.
The bride, who was given away by her father, looked charming in her white brocaded satin with train and tuile veil. She carried a sheaf bouquet of white carnations, orchids and horseshoes.
Four bridesmaids attended the bride, all looking very attractive in blue net over taffeta, with bouquets of sweet peas, gladiolas, carnations and a sheaf of delphiniums. The bridesmaids were the Misses Fay, Shirley and Valerie Tyne and Jean Harper.
Messrs. Ben Sewell, Ernie Paine and -. Best supported the groom.
The reception was held at the Brasnett Hall, about ninety guests being present.
Mr. Noel Cochrane proved an able chairman. The toast of the bride and bridegroom was proposed by Mr. Best and the groom suitably responded. Mr. Morley spoke next eulogising the qualities of the bride's parents, Mr. Chant responding. Mr. Cassey proposed the toast of the groom's parents and Mr. Norman Kent that of the bridesmaids.

BRYANT

On 2020-10-13 18:39, Gregory Fromyhr wrote:

Hi Ian,

I have been reviewing the published details on the Monaro Pioneers site of William Bryant, born in Bristol in 1793, transported to Sydney on the "Neptune" arriving in 1820 and dying in Warrumbucca on 5 May 1889. With this birth day he would have been 96 years old at death.

I am starting to question whether the William Bryant in this tree should not be William Bryant, born in Bristol in 1804, transported to Sydney on "Lloyd 1" arriving 18 December 1833 and dying in Warrumbucca on 5 May 1889 at age 85 (as per the death certificate).  Married to Margaret Chapman about 1849, she died before him at Buddawang in17 March 1888.

If it is the case that the latter one may be correct, then the specific data like Ticket of Leave, Pardons etc would still apply to the one born in 1793 not the one born in 1804.

I am still researching this issue.

Kind regards

Greg Fromyhr

Hi Greg,

Do you have a copy of his death certificate that I could have a look at?

Hi Ian,

Please see attached pdf.

Thank you Greg,

In Divorce.-(Before his Honor Mr. Justice
WINDEYER.)

MAXWELL V. MAXWELL
Mr Moss appeared for the petitioner, Rose Maxwell: there was no appearance for the respondent, Leonard Watson Maxwell. This was a suit for divorce on the ground of habitual drunkenness and cruelty. The parties were married at Adelong Crossing on 15th May, 1883. The respondent was a clerk. Three children were living. After marriage they came to live near Sydney, and had lived at various places near Sydney since. Shortly after marriage the respondent took to drink and he was constantly intoxicated. He frequently beat and ill-used his wife, and on more than one occasion she was laid up in consequence of her husband's ill-treatment. Respondent often blackened his wife's eyes with his fist and on one occasion he crushed her fingers in the door so severely that the nails of her fingers came off. The respondent was always drunk and petitioner was always in a bruised condition. Petitioner stated that just before her fourth child was born her husband beat and assaulted her to such an extent that a few days alter the child's birth it died. The respondent used to go home and ask "if the kid was dead yet," and ordered the child's coffin a day or two before the child died. While her child was lying dead in the room respondent gave his wife a black eye.
She continued to live with her husband until 1891 when in consequence of his threatening her life with a revolver she left him.
