JENNINGS

Hi David,
I would like to make a contribution to your next newsletter.
Firstly, some information about William Jennings, his wife Ann (nee Page) and his family:

William and Ann Jennings (nee Page) sailed from Bristol, England on 8th September 1837 on the barque “Layton” and arrived at Sydney on 18th January, 1838. William was 35 years old, a protestant and was able to read and write a little. His wife Ann, a needlewoman, was also 35 years old, a protestant, and could also read and write a little.
William was the son of John and Mary Jennings (nee Barnfield) and Ann was the daughter of Benjamin and Hannah Page (nee Church) all of Gloucestershire. William and Ann were accompanied by seven children: Simeon (16yrs), Charles (15yrs), William (12yrs), Elizabeth (10yrs), Henry (4yrs), Hannah (2yrs) and Harriet (6mths). It was a hazardous and heartbreaking voyage for the Jennings family as the three younger children, Henry, Hannah and Harriet died at sea from measles along with almost seventy other children.
According to the “Layton” passenger record in Sydney, they were not “brought out” by anyone, however an immigration record held by the NSW State Archives & Records shows that William was to be engaged by a Dr Anderson, of Parramatta, at the rate of £20 per annum and rations. Dr Anderson (Matthew) had acquired a farming property in 1825 between Goulburn and Braidwood called “Redesdale” which he sold in 1841 to Hugh Gordon who renamed it “Manar” which is the current locality name.
It is reasonable to assume that William and Ann made their way to Braidwood in NSW to work for Dr Anderson. They later had another daughter also called Harriet who was born in 1840 at Braidwood.

I have included below the immigration record held by the NSW State Archives and Records which can be found at this website:

I would also like to suggest some amendments to the information on the website:
The Jennings children, Simeon, Eliza, Henry, Hannah and the first Harriet were all born in Gloucestershire, England, rather than Gloucester NSW

Thank you for maintaining the website – it is a wonderful resource.
Kind regards,
Peter Jennings

Thank you,
Regards, Ian

WESTON/BROOKS

Hi Ian,
I have been reading an interesting piece of family history that I found online titled
"My Interest in West Horsley Manor, Surrey, UK." By Carol Herbon. This was presented in July/Aug 2008 by the Illawarra Historical Society Inc.
It is of great interest to the descendants of John Weston and Augusta Brooks.
It shows very clearly that John Samuel Henry Weston is John Weston's uncle. They are not the same person.
John Samuel Henry Weston is the oldest brother of William Francis Weston and George "Edward" Nicholas Weston (who came to Australia).
John Henry Samuel Weston was born 9/1/1791 and died in Paris 8/10/1850. He was a Captain in the 31st Regiment in Bengal.
The article by Carol Herben OAM is well researched with ten references provided. Sadly she passed away last year so I couldn't follow up on some of it but a worthwhile read.
Also Augusta Weston married Richard Brooks not Captain Richard Brooks.
From my reading, Richard was the illegitimate son of Capt Brooks.
Kind Regards

Description: Albert was a stonemason, brick layer and contract builder. He built the Eden Post Office and Green_Cape_Lighthouse in Eden, as well as Penrith police station and gaol. He also constructed the St. Peters brick works. He renovated the building that was used for the original Scotts College.

The lighthouse bankrupted him because of a blowout in costs. The amount of concrete needed for the foundations due to there being no stable rock formations below the light house and the transport of materials over the sand contributed to the blow out. The light house is still in operation today.

The embarrassment of the bankruptcy and the constant litigation against him by the creditors of the light house led to his suicide, by blowing his own head off with a stick of gelignite outside the light house.

Proposed Change: Brasington, Gertrude Hermoyone (I291527)
Tree: SE NSW Pioneers and Settlers
Link: http://monaropioneers.com/getperson.php?personID=I291527&tree=MP

Description: (As told to me by Viv Thompson)
The name Hermoyone came from the time her father was in a hospital during the war, after being wounded at the Somme, and it was the name of a nurse that cared for him during his stay there.

She was very independent. She went to Sydney by herself at 17 years of age to become a nurse, after not liking the look of Sydney Hospital she went to Manly on a day trip and saw Manly hospital and asked to work there and was immediately accepted. When leaving Bombala for Sydney by train, her father, who didn't want her to go, ran along the side of the train telling her she can still get off and stay.

Gertrude and future husband Eric met on the platform at Central station, Sydney while waiting for a train to come home to Bombala. Gertrude was a nurse at Manly at the time coming home with the measles and Eric was on furlow. Both being born in Bombala, they saw each other by chance at Central without knowing the other were there in Sydney.

She was President of Bibbenluke Football club. She believed very strongly in equal opportunity of both men and women, but never considered herself a feminist.

Description: Anthony was a boiler-maker by trade, starting his apprenticeship at the Eveleigh Railway Workshops at the age of 18. He enlisted on 19 May 1915.

Anthony arrived in Gallipoli on the 19 Sep 1915, 3 weeks after the disastrous attack on Hill 60. He would have taken up position at Quinn's Post, a heavily contested area of the Gallipoli campaign. The battalion withdrew in December, along with the whole allied army, to Alexandria, Egypt. They arrived in Marseilles, France on the 23 Mar 1916 and moved to the front of the Western Front near Armentières, in preparation the the Battle of the Somme. He took part in the Battle of the Somme at the battle of Pozières, twice. After the Battle of the Somme, Anthony along with the 17th Battalion was moved north towards Belgium, but was then ordered back to the Somme, taking up defensive positions. After the winter, the Germans began their retreat to the newly devised strategic Hindenburg Line, a defensive line to halt any further Allied offensives. As the Germans retreated, the allies advanced. The allies encountered Germans booby traps and the German rear guard as they moved forward. During this time, on the 2 Mar 1917, Anthony was wounded in action.

Description: The son of Henry C G Lancaster and husband of Mabel Cook was Charles George Lancaster. It's on the marriage certificate and electoral rolls. He was alive at the time of Mabel's death and was the informant on her death certificate. Charles George Lancaster died only a few months after Mabel on 22 Nov 1962. In Auckland, New Zealand. I guess he was staying with his daughter Jean.

The New Zealand death index (1962 Folio 1 5072) only records the year. The New Zealand cemetery record has his name, birth year, date of death all correct. His body was cremated on 24 Nov 1962 and his ashes interred in Purewa Cemetery.

HOWEVER, he has a grave site at Woronora Cemetery, Sutherland (as does his wife who was cremated also) and an Australian Cemetery Index record to match. No Australian Death index record and no place of death recorded on the Cemetery Index. I live near this cemetery, and intend to visit their graves and photograph the plaque/headstone for Find A Grave.

Thomas married my fathers mother Annie Norah Wearing in 1933. My father William Francis Kirwan was born in 1934. Thomas and Annie divorced on 2/11/38. Annie died of TB on 7/5/39. My father recalls only ever meeting Thomas on a couple of occasions. He was subsequently raised by his Aunt and Uncle on the Wearing side. My father always wondered about his history. Again your work has allowed me to find this for him. I would love to hear what is needed to add all our family under Thomas
