The house is not made of sandstone. It is made of granite sourced from the property.

HAWES

On 2021-08-31 21:28, Graeme Barry Fernie wrote:

Dear Coordinator

I have copies of the passports granted to William Hawes in storage, which I will try to retrieve shortly.

This is a story that I've put up on ancestry, which might prove interesting, at the least:

"On 4 October 1839, and again on 6 November 1840, William Hawes is granted a passport by the Goulburn Bench allowing him to travel south to the Manaroo Plains (now known as the "Monaro Plains") to work for Captain Francis Rossi.

Francis Nicholas Rossi (1776-1851), soldier and public servant, was born in Corsica, France, and joined the British Army in an Anglo-Corsican battalion in 1795. After several postings, in August 1824 he accepted the post of superintendent of police in New South Wales, offered to him by Earl Bathurst.

After retirement in November 1834 he lived on his property Rossiville in the Goulburn district. He took up a run at Micilago soon afterwards. The estimated area of that property was about thirty-five thousand acres, and capable of maintaining about nine thousand sheep. The property was bounded by Micilago Creek on the north, Colliers Creek on the south, Tinderee mountains on the east, and the Murrumbidgee river to the west. The area is essentially the present day town and district of Michelago.

The Ryrie family, Manaroo pioneers, eventually acquired the Micalago run from Captain Francis Nicholas Rossi. The main street of Michelago is named Ryrie Street. Interestingly, at Hawes wedding to Mary Fox at Arn Prior (modern day Larbert) in 1842, a member of the Ryrie family was a witness.

From the evidence he gave to a Court in Sydney in 1836 about having been an overseer for both Hannibal McArthur and Dr Andrew Gibson, Hawes may also have been employed as an overseer with Rossi. It is also at least possible he was employed at the property by the Ryries.

The district was fairly lawless at the time of Hawes' employment. The following two newspaper articles give some idea of the locality at the time:

The Sydney Gazette and New South Wales Advertiser, Tue 12 Mar 1839, page 2

 The Squatting Act.

 WEDNESDAY, FERRUARY 20, 1839.

 (CONTINUED FROM OUR LAST.)

 THURSDAY, FEBRRUARY 21, I839.

John Lambie, Esq.. Commissioner of Crown Lands, called in and examined.

My district extends from Micilago on the North, to the farthest station South ; its length is at least two hundred miles ; its breadth may be computed at from ninety to one hundred ; it contains about fifteen hundred souls, consisting of Free and Bond nearly in equal proportions ; according to the latest returns, the number of cattle in the district was 69,994; sheep, 239,157 ; horses, 1,617 ; there are some extensive herds of horses in the district; my estimate of the population of the district includes only the Whites ; I am unable to state the number of Aborigines ; they have, however, hitherto been quiet and inoffensive, and I do not conceive any additional force necessary to keep them in order. I consider that to carry into effect the provisions of this Bill, it will be necessary to have six men with me in my district, which would be quite sufficient; I think these men should be well armed and each of them provided with two horses, as the difficulty of providing forage is very great....

 The Australian, Thu 7 Nov 1839 , page 3

 Country News.

Goulburn, Nov. 2. — The Lock-up at Queanbeyan was broken open on Monday morning, the 27th ult., and five bushrangers effected their escape. The Police Magistrate, Captain Faunce, immediately set out in pursuit, and at nine o'clock the same night captured four of them, with the assistance of Mr Thomson, Innkeeper, at Micalago, about thirty-six miles from the lock-up — they were brought the next morning before the Police Bench, and committed to take their trial on several charges. In consequence of the miserable arrangements of the police in this part of the country, and the great number of desperadoes who are prowling about the interior, it was found expedient to swear in a number of ticket- of-leave men at Goulburn, as special constables.

The delightful showers with which this part of the country has been visited, has given the plains in particular, a most delightful and healthy appearance."

Hello Ian from Faye Brea in New Zealand.  My grandmother Agnes Maude Burch was born in Bungendore daughter of Joseph and Maria Burch on 1st February, 1887.  Her father Joseph was a foreman on the Railway line between Sydney and Canberra, hence children born down the line.  The family ended up farming in Cooma and from a letter written by my grandmothers late brother Robert the information that around the time of his birth  in 1898 Maria's sister Emma (Tansley) Weare died and her husband Bobby brought the 6 children to the farm at Cooma and left to run the Kings Arms in Sydney leaving Maria with around 16 children to care for .  Maria apparently was an amazing women so my loving grandmother told me.  My grandmother came to New Zealand as a young woman to help her sister Florence with her young children here.  Maria's other sister in Australia  Alice married William Rees  which I note on your Pioneer roll and I have been in touch with one of their descendants through DNA and to my joy have been provided with a photo of my gr grandparents and also of Alice Burch Rees.

I recall my grandmother telling me that their house had the kitchen built away from the house in case there was ever a fire whilst cooking, apart from that I was young when she passed away and never asked those questions I wish I had.

I hope when I have more information I can forward to you for the website the Burch/Tansley  information that I have

I have booked and hope to be able to come to your area over 3 weeks in Xmas (if the bubble exists between OZ and NZ) and my son based in Sydney is looking forward to doing a roadie with me down to Bungendore and then Cooma.  My son has The Old Pill Factory in Bundanoon and loves the area.

Kind regards and thanks for the amazing work you are doing,   Faye Brea

Hi Faye,

Thank you for the email.

I have done a little extra research based on the information you have provided and have now included in our database the 2 sisters of Maria Mitchell Tansley who also came to Australia.  My research results differ from the information you provided though.  Maria's sister Emma married William Brownell and lived till 1931.  Alice Ann Tansley married Robert Weare and had 5 children before she died in 1888.  Only 3 of her children outlived her.

I look forward to any additional information you can provide.

FLEMING

Hi Ian, I happened across your fine website while researching my "Bradbury" ancestors in Queensland !  My research indicates that my Robert Bradbury married an Elizabeth Fleming in Mackay on Mar 20 1915.

Elizabeth's father turns out to be Thomas Fleming born 1854, died 1901.  On his QLD death notice of 1901,Thomas Fleming's parents are listed as Thomas Fleming and Mary Ann Wellsmere (sic).   The only Thomas Fleming I have found with such parents is the one that appears on your database, born in Bukalong, NSW, in 1854.  I have not located a birth record for him on the NSW BDM site though.

Thomas Fleming death record QLD BDM,

Event date: 23/06/1901
Event type: Death registration
Registration details: 1901/C/2808

Mother: Mary Ann Wellsmere

Father/parent: Thomas Fleming

Thomas Fleming (1854-1901) - Find A Grave...

I then reseached the parents of Thomas.  My results are a little different to what is on your website for Thomas Senior (parents and date of death).  I don't want to upset any of your fine researchers, but wonder if you could provide my findings to those researchers and update your website if agreed?

We know that Thomas was alive in the late 1880s as he provided a lifetime account of the early days in Monaro to the author Henry T. Edwards around that time. Edwards recorded that "Thomas Fleming was (then) a man of about eighty years of age - a sound, strong, man. He was living at Ingram's Farm or selection on Boucher's Creek at the Crossing on the road to Cambalong and that his memory seemed sound and clear" (source Monaro Pioneers website).

Although various family researchers show his death in the 1880s in Cooma (no source documentation provided though),  I have found a record of entry for a Thomas Fleming to the Liverpool Insane Asylum for the Infirm, dated 27 March 1895. Admission docs show his age as 80 and in the Remarks column noted he had been born circa 1815 and arrived in Australia on the "Camden (2)".This matches all other records for Thomas Fleming of Monaro.

I also found an entry in the NSW BDMs for this Thomas Fleming, recording his death as 7 Sep 1904.  On findagrave, it shows this Thomas was buried in a Paupers Grave in the Liverpool NSW cemetery, aged 89 (again this matches age of Thomas Fleming of Monaro)

https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/152757958/thomas-fleming

The NSW death notice also shows that the parents of Thomas were Thomas and Elizabeth Fleming (and this conflicts with what is recorded on your website)
NSW Death Notice for Thomas in 1904
FLEMING THOMAS
NSW BDM Ref 9856/1904
father THOMAS
mother ELIZABETH
place of death LIVERPOOL, NSW

I have found one match for a Thomas Fleming born in London circa 1815 with parents Thomas and Elizabeth.  A good fit, perhaps?

A copy of the admission of Thomas Fleming to Liverpool Hospital, and a burial record,  are attached for your perusal.

To conclude, I believe that Thomas Fleming, the convict who arrived in Australia on the CAMDEN (2) in 1833 and lived in the Monaro region for most of his life, was born to parents Thomas And Elizabeth Fleming on 30 Nov 1814 in London England and died in Liverpool on 7 Sep 1904 and was buried in the Liverpool Cemetery.

Hope this helps, regards Tim

Hi Tim,

Thank you the information and images.

Your evidence does appear to be compelling proof of Thomas' death and burial.  This email will be in our next newsletter and we shall see what comments if any that may bring forth.

Thanks Ian.

I also found another piece of info that I didn't include in my note , which was a baptism record on Family Search for Thomas Fleming junior (still no record in the NSW BDMs though) - appreciate if you could update that on my original submission

Hello Ian

I'm working on a project to profile all persons buried÷¿÷ in Hall Cemetery ACT and notice wrong death  and burial of Pamela Sumner nee Davis.

You have correct death reference 16712/1915 but death date and place doesn't align to this reference.
There is only one Pamela Sumner reference in 1915 and this was registered at Queanbeyan  - not Braidwood.
The date behind the reference is  28 Nov 1915 which aligns to the burial of Pamela Sumner in Hall Cemetery. She probably died at Bedelluck (just over the border from where Hall is situated) where the family lived and Queanbeyan is of course the registry office location.

Hall was a logical burial location because St Paul's churchyard, The Glebe (where husband William Henry was buried) had closed by the time Pamela died.

Robin

Thank you Robin,

A bit confusing as she is definitely listed as being buried in Braidwood Cemetery as well, at least according to the transcription records along with her daughter Pamela.

HI Ian

I am attaching copies of my grandfathers Birth Certificate and his Marriage Certificate.

There is no formal paperwork showing the GF Stanley ever had John as one of his names. His son was Stanley John Richard Burke (known as John).

Stanley's Father-in-Law was John Blyton, married to (Isabella Koellner) Mary Jardine Venables.

GF Stanley was born 28 Oct 1899 at Dairyman's Plain.

GM (Isabella) Sylvia Mary was born 28 February 1902.

Stanley and Sylvia married 20 April 1924.

I hope this information can be updated.

Regards, Joy Perkins

Hi Joy,

Thank you, however there was no marriage certificate attached.

Your comments had me confused at first but I have got it right in the database now.  See the corrections in red below that I interpreted from you comments.
