I have vague memories of Aunty Maude & Uncle Joe and their daughter Dorothy ‘Jean’ Williams Sharp.  Aunty Jean was a school teacher and taught mum in her first years of school at Cooma.  The military information is all new to me, it was never discussed, the only Goodwin Mum spoke about that had served was Thomas ‘Stanley’ Goodwin WW2, Eric Alwyn Goodwin’s older brother.

I’m assuming that Leila Tozer’s family were a pioneering family or long term residents of the district as she was born and buried at Cooma.

Hoping this information is useful/helpful for your register, and /or you may pass on to History Society.

Hello again Ian

Is there a record in the database for the Mr White referred to in the following two articles?

Manaro Mercury, and Cooma and Bombala Advertiser (NSW : 1862 - 1931), Wednesday 16 October 1878, page 3. - I am sorry to record the death of Mr. White, photographer, who departed this life on the 8th instant. Preparations are being made for his funeral on the 10th instant at Gegedzerick. Dr. Donovan arrived here yesterday, but, unfortunately, too late to do the poor sufferer any good.

Manaro Mercury, and Cooma and Bombala Advertiser (NSW : 1862 - 1931), Saturday 26 October 1878, page 3. - Buckley's Crossing. [FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.] OCTOBER 18TH.— Mr. White, who was buried at Gegedzerick, on the 10th instant, was followed but by a few friends to the cemetery. Many were absent, through ignorance of the date of the funeral, who would have wished to attest their last respects. Mr. White was engaged taking photographs of stations in this district, and his work everywhere was commended. He was no mere mechanical photographer—he was an artist, and had learned to love all beauty, whether of nature or of art. He hoped to bring, by means of photography, the poetry and beauty of nature into every dwelling house, and his pictures have the reflection of that genius which in life shone in his face. The age is too fast for such men to be sufficiently appreciated by the public at large, and he was consequently obliged to do much mechanical work, in which he did not spare himself, and his delicately moulded nature was exhausted at the very time when the goal he had been laboring for was in sight.

There is no record of his death in the N.S.W. Register of Births, Deaths and Marriages, and no record in the Australian Cemeteries Index of graves at Gegedzerick.

Regards, Paul

Thank you Paul,

We had no record of this person but I have added what I can to the DB now.

My father John Joseph (Jack) Mullane passed away in 2002 and he's was just a toddler when Frank died. He never really fully swallowed not knowing his father. We still have my fathers ashes and in an ideal world one day I will reunite him with his father in Nimmitabel.

Dear Ian

Thank you for you last e-mail, unfortunately I am not on facebook.

Attached is a mini Kaufline tree (to preserve my sanity when working on trees)  my paternal side is now colour coded so I know at a glance who belongs to who!!!!  And re-typed obituaries for George Edward Kaufline as they appeared in the newspapers at the time.   Some interesting information contained in the write ups.  Have done a bit of research this evening, Sr Gertrude of Masterton New Zealand is George Kaufline’s daughter Lavinia Patricia Kaufline.  Have contacted the Brigidine Order in Sydney hoping the sisters may be able to supply some info. Electoral roll 1963 show her living at Brigidine Convent Coogee Bay Road Randwick, her place of death is Randwick, so can only assume at this point it was at convent.   It was interesting to read that George Kaufline had a butchering business in Sharp St!!  My grandfather Eric Goodwin, his nephew started his working life as a butcher.

I have checked the birth certificate of my mother Shirley Ann Goodwin,  she was actually born in Albert St Cooma, not Sharpe St.  The date of her birth registration 30thJanuary 1934 and living in Barron St Cooma, not sure if after the flood the family returned to Albert St???   Is Sharp St named after a Cooma family?  Mum had a Goodwin cousin Jean Sharp!

Hope you find the obituaries an interesting read, and if you don’t already have them the info is useful.

Enjoy Friday

Thank you Kerry,

Description: DOD 26 Apr 1954 Place: Millmerran, Toowoomba Region

Burial Pittsworth Cemetery
Pittsworth, Toowoomba Region
OBITUARY
Mrs. L. J. SCOTT
An old and highly respected resident of the Brookstead district passed away on Monday afternoon at the Millmerran Hospital, in the person of Mrs. Leopoldina Jemima Scott, widow of the late Mr. W. Scott, The late Mrs. Scott, who was 79 years of age, was born at Bombala, N.S.W., in 1875, and was married in 1902. Leaving Bombala, Mr. and Mrs. Scott and their young family came to Queensland in 1912.
For a time they resided at Springside, then came to the Brookstead district in 1914, where the family has resided ever since. The late Mrs. Scott was the only parent of original pupils of the Brookstead State School still residing in that area. She was of a deeply religious nature, and her greatest pleasure was derived from helping others when in need of friendly assistance. For many years she conducted an inter-denominational Sunday School at her home, and with her husband (who died in 1926) she took a keen interest in all district affairs. She led an active life until about nine months ago, when her advanced age compelled her to reside with her daughter, Mrs. K. Jasch. The funeral, which moved from the Plttsworth Methodist Church to the Plttsworth cemetery on Wednesday, was largely attended. Rev. Floyd Potter (Brisbane) conducted a service at the church and performed the last rltes at the graveside. The late Mrs. Scott is survived by a daughter (Mrs. K. Jasch, Pampas), and two sons (Ivan, Jondaryan, and Clyde, Brookstead). A brother, Mr.Albert Rozynski (Victoria), and a sister (Mrs. L. Pendergast, N.S.W.) are still living.

Hello again Ian

I am still working on the historic transfers of titles for properties in  a commercial block in Bega.

I have come across an owner who doesn't seem to appear in the MP database. He lived in Bega about 1875-1896 or so,  bought and sold property there, ran a saddlery business there, was on the local council, and several of his children born there – so perhaps he is a worthy addition?

I found some information on trees on Ancestry and I have added source details where I could find them ....

Parents Richard Gentle and Mary Newman Saunders.

Married 1870 Julia Poole

His saddlery business was in Auckland St according to 1875 commercial directory. He bought land facing Carp St in 1880 and it was there that Sturah's saddlery was later sited.

The 1891 census has him listed in Parker St Bega (residence)

Best regards ... Liz Smit

HEALY

On 2021-11-09 10:59, Tony Annand wrote:

Re: James Maurice Healy

Hi Ian, I would like to suggest some changes please, re: the family of Maurice Healey and his partner Sarah Ann Burton. When Maurice arrived from Co. Cork he could neither read/write, so here his surname was variously written as Haley, Haly, Hayley, Healey, Healy or Hely. It appears from different docs that his family knew his 1st name was actually James e.g., on the death cert for his son James (12251/1935), the informant is James' sister Rebecca, and their father is recorded as "James Morris Haley", and, ignoring the spelling, I think this is probably right.

In MP at present, Maurice Haley MP377444 and Sarah Unknown MP377445 are recorded with 5 children with a 13 year gap between the births of John & James. I believe in this period there should be:

Sarah (DOB c1858). She didn't marry and her death cert (5625/1880) says she died aged 22 at Corrowong on 20.02.1880, that she's the daughter of Maurice Healy, shepherd and her mother (the informant) is Sarah Healy (nee Burton/Burd??). She is buried at Delegate Cemetery as are her parents.

Rebecca Caroline (DOB 1861) (MP 881). Her marriage extract in part says: "the consent of Maurice Healey of Bibbenluke, Father of Rebecca Healey was given to the marriage of Rebecca Healey.... etc," as she was under 21. The registrar was James Giles, who, in all docs I've seen, consistently spelt the family name as Healey. On my grandmother's marriage declaration, her maiden name is Rebecca Hayley. On Rebecca's death cert, her parents are James Haly & Sarah Ann (nee Burton).

Mary Jane (DOB c1865) (MP13554). Mary married Thomas Smith, as per MP, and while I cannot guarantee she belongs in this Healey family, I think it most likely she is the Mary J on Sarah's death cert (see below). I DNA match with several descendants of hers (her sister Rebecca is my g/grandmother) and at least two of their trees in Ancestry have her parents as Maurice Healey & Sarah Burton/Burdon. Mary's marriage extract doesn't have parent details, but says her father is deceased, and Maurice had died 5 years earlier.

Maurice's death cert (4501/1879) says he did not marry, and his estate file agrees. I have attached a transcript of the death certificate for Sarah Ann (00746/1907) daughter of _____ Burton, spouse of Maurice Hayley, with surviving children: Maurice, Rebecca, Mary J and James. The 4 deceased are: Patrick (DOD 1892), John (1876), Sarah (1880) & Eliza (1877).

It's debatable how best to spell his surname in MP. As mentioned above, Giles used Healey on BDMs etc, and this is how other docs have it including his estate file, the purchase & the sale of his land at Corrowong. His employer used Healy. His children went with a variety, some using more than one. It is quite possible that, whatever the spelling, it has not continued through to today. Records show only Rebecca and Mary married, and if they are the only ones to have his grandchildren, they were either Summerells or Smiths.

Please let me know if you need anything further

thanks for all your great work and regards,

Tony

Thank you Tony,

Congratulations on some fine detective work.

Dear Ian,

What a fantastic amount of information you have on Monaro Pioneers - great to see. I am not a member but have had a bit of a look as I am interested in the story of my great grandmother, Alice Johnson. Her mother is listed (in most places) as Johanna Ellen Brewer and her father as Henry Richard Johnson (with various Johnson/Brewer/Robbie siblings and half siblings). However, this cannot be entirely correct because Alice was Indigenous. We know this through family and community stories, photographs of her and because - well - she just was.

I have my mum's DNA now (through, and downloaded from Ancestry.com) and I would love to add it to your work here to see if we can work out how Alice fits it. I am very interested in her story, however, information is difficult to find and paperwork regarding her Indigeneity is (deliberately, unfortunately) non-existant. My mum is Alice's direct grandchild.

If it is possible for you to incorporate my mum's DNA and you would like to help that would be really fantastic. I am also happy to provide further information that you may need.

Thanks very much Ian.

Kind regards, Anthea.

Hi Anthea,

Thank you for the offer.  We don't include DNA information in our database, there are other sites that cater for that type of detail and provide searching capabilities.

We can include any other details for your Great Grandmother (if we don't already have it) including identifying her as a First nation descendant if you care to provide it.

Ah I see. I was getting a bit ahead of myself - Gedcom is just for the tree, not the DNA. I thought I'd hit the jackpot and would find a whole lot of Bombala/Monaro people sharing their DNA files in one spot : ). Thanks anyway Ian.
I am very happy for a note to be made about her as a First Nations Person - I guess I would need to join and do a search to see if anything like this already exists regarding Alice (unlikely), and then perhaps make a submission?

Thanks for your help Ian.

Hi Anthea,

Yes it would be nice to have a database of DNA information for the area but that is for some other brave sole to take on in the future.

Dear Ian

A few items of interest I’ve accidently stumbled upon.  You probably have already on your register, if you don’t hope they are useful.

Attachment 4 & 5 are immigration records for Vincent Kaufline and Eva Size Kaufline, and naturalisation certificate for Vincent.

Will contact Cessnock Council re plot location for Vincent.   I find it amazing that my 2x great grandfather is buried 20kms from where I live in the Hunter Valley and have attended Mass at St Brigid’s on numerous occasions.

Do you know any direct descendants of Elizabeth Kaufline and Charles Goodwin that you could put me in touch with.  There may be someone who could fill in a few missing gaps for me.  I have been trying to find info on my grandmother, Catherine Ellen Martin Goodwin’s parents.  I started looking for info and records in August 2020 to no avail.  It would be good to have some gaps filled.  The family left Cooma in the early 1940’s.  I do know my mother was born during a flood, at home and I think it may have been Sharpe St??  The flood water came through the house and the midwife saved Mum.   Mum didn’t realise until she went to school her name was Goodwin as she was known around the town as ‘Shirley Flood’ in honour of her dramatic arrival.

Any help or information you are able to share would be greatly appreciated.

Have a great week

Kerry

Hi Ian,
Are you able to add Newspaper information to “William Sextus Avery MP138678 as further information to his Occupation in the district of Monaro and Goulburn.
After leaving Coloraine in Victoria, traveling across to Heathcote, where he met his future wife, they travelled to the Monaro district, where his future wife had family at Bobundra, the Caldwell family.  While in the district, he went to Sydney to train as a Police Officer.  He was then appointed to Adaminaby and also Nimitabelle. They married in the district and their first child was born at Adaminaby. He was sent to Goulburn Goal where he stayed until retirement.
The Newspaper Obituary , “Ex-Sergeant’s Career”  — Goulburn Evening Post of Monday 13 March 1933, was a large spread, starting one page 2 and going onto page 5.
Thank you in anticipation of this story being added.
