Regarding the record of George Eccleston born 31/3/1804, I wish to advise that the parents listed for George being William Eccleston and Mary Drury are highly doubtful. Apart from the fact that other sites listing the William Eccleston family of Shropshire do not include George eg.
The place of the children’s births are all Shropshire which differs from George. George is said to have been born in 1804 at Eastbourne on the other side of England. This coincides with the placement of the 48th regiment there in that time.
It is believed that his parents were David Eccleston born c1774 and Margaret McWilliams born c1779. George was baptised as an adult at St Marys Cathedral, Sydney in 1842 and cited these names as his parents at time of Catholic baptism. My late father, who worked at the Registrar General’s Dept., personally sighted this record. It was strongly believed George’s father was a soldier and this is recorded in quite a few places. David Eccleston was killed on 16/5/1811 in the Napoleonic Wars in Spain. Margaret McWilliams married his colleague soldier George McDonald and both were on the same ship, the Caledonia, with George who was a boy soldier with the same 48th regiment which came to Sydney. George E. joined the 48th at the age of 14 at Kent in 1818. His likely stepfather George Mc. Would have been there at that time. It makes sense that he joined his late father’s (David) regiment.
Other than George’s military/Mounted Police Service for a few years in Port Macquarie, Newcastle and Bathurst NSW, the families lived and worked at Parramatta and after George McDonald died, the McDonalds and George E. all settled in the similar Monaro area albeit it is not known of social connections with each other after arriving in NSW.
George Eccleston’s first born son was named David.
The late author, Garnet Webster was an avid genealogist and was descended from Margaret. He wrote (apologies for screenshot):
I think the William paternity assumption has been derived from George’s death certificate as reported by his son, William. There are many reasons why this could be wrong. He cited Ireland as place of birth which differs also and is probably wrong. However, George may have lived in Ireland as a boy due to the movements of the 48th (McDonalds) and his own son may have grown up listening to his father’s stories of boyhood in Ireland.
Margaret and George Mc. Were of Scottish origin. In the 1841 census the majority of George’s household belonged to the Church of Scotland with only 2 Catholics, one being his wife. The Scottish religious connection leads to Margaret but does not lead in any way to William Eccleston & Mary Drury.
I do not have anything in hard evidence to give you but on the balance of probability David Eccleston and Margaret McWilliam(s) are more likely the parents of George than William Eccleston and Mary Drury. Of course, the baptismal record for George is the strongest evidence but this information is not included on his certificate only in the cathedral record.
Regards, Roslyn Lang nee Eccleston.

Incredible, two Patrick James Bourke's. One born 27 Aug 1887 in Braidwood (below) and the second born 27 Aug 1888 Reedy Flat near Batlow. I am glad we now have that all sorted.
Patrick James below lied about his birthday on his military records. I have verified the dates I now have in the DB from the BDM Index.

Good morning Ian,
I obtained your contact details from the Monaro Pioneers Site. I am researching William Crawford (1816-1883) and his wife Eleanor (Ellen) Crawford (nee Power) (1816-1876). They were convicts into Sydney in 1833 and 1834. I cannot find them after they left the convict system in Sydney. They had 4 children that I am aware of Mary born 1843, Ellen1844, Margaret 1845 and William 1846. All said to be born in the Monaro.
Whilst they are not listed on the sites name data base, I am wondering if there might be any mention of them in your records. They are my 3rd great grandparents.
Please let me know if there is any cost involved. Look forward to hearing from you.
Kind regards, Vince Aitkin
Hi Vince,
We do have some basic information on William Crawford and Eleanor (Ellen) Power and 4 children in our database which you can search for free.
Not much more than you already know unfortunately.

Hi there,
I am wondering if you can clarify something for me. I am doing research on my family history and my grandfather – abovenamed – son of George Hart. On your site I note that he married Hope King. To my knowledge he married Jean Winifred Anderson and had 3 children Edna, Betty and George. His birthdate was 16thAugust 1894. He died in April 1984. I am also sure he had brothers Cecil and Robert – as a child I visited Cecil's farm and also visited Bob in Bega.
Can you clarify if this is the same person – John C Hart, son of George on your chart.
Thanks for your trouble but I am very puzzled and would like to know if I have the right person.
Thank you, Diane Petre nee Hart.
Hi Diane,
You are correct! John Charles Hart b1894 did marry Jean Winifred Anderson (1901-1958). I have been able to verify this from their Burial details in Woronora Cemetery where they are listed in adjoining plots.
Our records have been amended accordingly.

I have been able to find back as far as a lady name Mary (No birth cert or Marriage Cert) married a Whittaker . We believe from a family letter that Mary was indigenous. We have made trips to a lot of the cemeteries in the area but up to this point have come up empty hand
If you were able to help us in any way it would be much appreciated.

Dear IanI have recently completed some family history research about my ancestor, John Sampson, who was a blacksmith in Cooma in 1870. In 1884 his daughter married John Andrew Butler, a coach builder and the son of an early selector around Cooma, John Butler (who arrived in 1856 and was also a police officer, gold escort, mail contractor and inspector of nuisances in Cooma). I have written the attached paper about the Sampsons of Cooma which I am happy to share with you and your members. If there is any advice or guidance you can offer on improving this paper, then it would be gratefully received. Also, I would be interested to know if there are any members of Monaro Pioneers who can assist me with information about John Butler and his older brother, Thomas Butler and their children, as I am keen to learn what I can about their life in the Cooma district.Barry Walsh
Hi Barry,
Thank you for the information, I recommend you add your document to a post on our Facebook page as the best way to share and perhaps make the family contacts you seek.

Hi I am a Dr of military history, living in Canberra, please see my website
I am endeavouring to contact members of the Herbert Monaro family as I am writing a book about William Valentine Herbert and the Australian Flying Corps. Many years ago I met up with Felix who gave me copies of some of his grandfather's photos of service in WWI and I provided him with a copy of William's service file. Unfortunately other books intruded and I have now lost track of Felix. William and his wife Armenell May Agatha Herbert held properties in the Monaro district before William died aged 48. I am hoping I may now regain contact with the family of William George Herbert or other children of William Valentine Herbert and Armenell so that I may do William's story justice. Any assistance would be gratefully received.

Hi Pamela,
Thank you for the offer. Our project does not keep any physical copies of images and documents as we don't have a Library as such. If you can provide me with digital copies of the photos you have I can certainly add them to each person's record in our database.
This email will be included in our next newsletter but that is not due for publication until March so response there from will be slow. However, if you wish to add your offer to our Facebook page you will have more success in finding appropriate family members who would want the original photos.
