Hello Ian – I hope this email finds you well.. I have been busy on family research on other parts of my tree but have been relooking at my Monaro family connections/information.
I apologise but I think I have made an error in previous notes I provided to you on the death of Janet Hay nee McCreddie. I refer to the sentence below where I found only one search for death of Janet Hay and it appeared to be 1898. However I have been reading copious notes from Trove and have found a few statements on the death of Anthony and Janet’s daughter – also named Janet who married Walterus Le Brun Brown. In her obituary it is noted that both her parents had died when she was very young and she was ‘adopted’ by a lady named Mrs Cassels who had taken over Mr Ryrie’s Island Lake Station which is where Anthony and Janet were living/working at the time of their deaths. So it isn’t very likely then that the Janet reported in BDM for 1898 would be ‘my’ Janet (as she would have died aged 93 and daughter Janet would have been 63yrs). I note on Monaro Pioneers someone had provided the details of Anthony’s death in 1852 (aged 64yrs) – I cannot find a corresponding one in NSW BDMs but assume this is the Anthony which would mean he was 47yrs when he had his youngest son who would have been around 5yrs when his father passed away. (Would also mean Janet daughter was 17 yrs old when her father died as she was born in 1835 – which I wouldn’t have thought was “very young and needed adopting” as reported in the various news articles). I still am unable to find anything on Janet so that date of 1898 might need to be removed unless of course there is other information you have that might be different from that reported in newspapers.
Thank you, stay well, Debbie

Good morning Ian please find attached suggested amendments – hope you can follow my notes. I will be sending after this attachments 2-5 as well as it was too big a doco to send all at once.
Let me know if you have any difficulties etc
Stay safe, thanks
Deb
Hi Debbie,
Thanks for the update. In my experience, information contained in Obituaries is often questionable and in this case, it would have been provided by her husband and then interpreted by the newspaper staff.
I will remove the death information for Janet from our records.
My interpretation of the events are that Janet Hay nee McCreddie probably died on or shortly after the time of the birth of David McCreddie in 1847, leaving her husband Anthony with 3 young children to care for. The "adoption" could easily have occurred at this time as her father would have been required to work and raising a young family on his own would have been very difficult. Not an uncommon situation back in those days. But of course, I have no proof of this theory as yet.
Regards, Ian

My name is Michael Hoffman, I have recently been advised via DNA test that my grandfather was a Ernest Frank McDonald born in Bombala in 1903 and died in 1970.
From the information I have available to me, his parents were Duncan Robert McDonald (1866 – 1935) married to Ada Alice Scanes (1874 – 1953).
My father had no knowledge of either of his parents because he was put into the orphanage system in NSW from an infant. Ernest never married my father's mother.
I would appreciate if you would advise me how to connect into your page, Monaro Pioneers Group
I have seen a Facebook page for the Clan McDonald but currently find it, any assistance would be appreciated.

Ian,
Thank you for your amazingly quick response.
I have probably seen much of the Trove stuff and everything seems to agree. I have a birth certificate for Amy Armstrong (I454167) which shows William as born at Taralga and being 40 y.o. in 1891. The '40' is a little out – maybe he didn't want to face up to the advancing years! Taralga is where Charles and Naomi Armstrong were (sometimes Laggan). I assume they came down there from Ermington to continue with Major Lockyer. The certificate also gives the marriage date of 08NOV1888 but, as I say, I can't get the marriage on the BDM Family History search. So William (snr.) does seem to be the baby of the Charles & Naomi family. Remember that I have Ancestry DNA connections with other C & N Armstrong descendants. The cert also says 2 living issue. But Amy was the second child. There were other children from previous marriages or maybe another one that never made the books. Or maybe they double counted Amy as she was several months old by then! I think the critical points are the marriage date, the (slightly off) age and the birthplace of Taralga.
(Funnily enough, I bit the bullet and bought Amy's cert just this morning. Before I discovered the 18APR2022 updates on Monaro Pioneers.)
You can see from the attached, and Monaro Pioneers, that g-grandmother Elizabeth Horton was widowed after marrying Denis Maguire in 1879. It gets a bit complicated but I knew that a well known Real Estate agent in Canberra years ago, Reg Daly, was related to William John Armstrong. So if one keeps following the clues, there is a connection there somewhere! I am also considering searching for a divorce for William and Mary Turner. We don't seem to have a death date for her and she is on William's death records. I would think it impossible to marry on 08NOV1888 if Mary was still alive. I should think divorce was fairly uncommon then.
William John Armstrong married Blanche Vallance in 1925. They had three daughters – Paula, Elizabeth and Nola (my mother). Nola died quite young in 1977. Elizabeth only went a year or two ago. Paula is also deceased.
Blanche was the daughter of Hugh Vallance and Sophia Hilder. Hugh was the son of George Vallance who married 'Betsy' Franklin – the eldest child of Joseph and Mary who came out from Ireland with them. George and 'Betsy' lived on Bramina Station in the Fiery Range. Across the Goodradigbee from Joseph Franklin's Brindabella. (I said I wouldn't start with the anecdotes but I always reckoned that Hamilton Hume suggested Joseph go up into the mountains near where he passed on his trip to Port Phillip a bit earlier. They were neighbours and friends when they lived outside of Yass. They went hunting bushrangers – maybe after Hume's brother was murdered at Gunning. https://trove.nla.
The original Hugh Vallance, George's father, settled at Murrumbateman. He called his property 'Drumclog' – later, and now, called 'Hillview'.
I am sure you are right about 1915. In fact Thomas James Clarke No5346 (CLARKE/BOYD) enlisted with his cousin Charles Thomas Clarke No5345 (CLARKE/BAINES) in late 1915. This is where my search started. I initially picked Charles Thomas as he didn't come back. Perhaps a little extreme for avoiding responsibility back home! But, from the DNA matches, I later formed the opinion that it was the CLARKE/BOYD line and settled on Thomas James. As I say, confirmed by a Clarke researcher on Ancestry. I asked her to explicitly say that I could use the information. She hasn't replied but I imagine it is not necessarily her exclusive property. But, I like to be polite. I will write to her again.
Thomas James may still have been in camp in Goulburn when William Ernest was born in 1916 in Shepherd Street. I wonder if he was allowed out – or even if they wanted to see each other. I couldn't identify the house in Shepherd street. They didn't number them until the 1930's.
I have become generally interested in colonial history and have learned a lot about many of the players from those times – a surprising number of whom had property and connections all around where I am now in Scullin ACT.
But I had better stop before I get carried away.
I am more than willing to provide any more information if I can.
Thank you,
Greg Jeffs
(P.S. As I often say, I am not perturbed by any things revealed from the past. I don't think what happened then affects me adversely today. Feel free to use any info that I provide)
Thank you Greg, I have found the following in the NSW BDM Death Index

I am researching William Hall Forster for a friend.
My friend, Martin Forster, has a letter written by William Hall Forster sent from Umeralla (sic) in 1881 and he donated a copy to the Cooma-Monaro Historical Society in 1981.
Martin has given me a copy of a letter dated 24 June 1995 from Elaine Schofield, who was involved in a history book being published about Numeralla
She suggested the book was going to be published the following year.
She did find a mailing list dated 1878/79 on which Wm H Forster is listed as a miner.
Would the society have a copy of that list?
Did the book get published?
Is there any other mention of William Hall Forster in your historical records of Numeralla or Cooma?
William would have been there as a mature single man we presume. He was born in England in 1825, married in 1846 and left his grown family some time in the 1870s to go on 'the diggins' presumably.
He was a cabinet maker by trade.
We are also trying to find out if he went back to England or died in Australia.
I look forward to any information you can provide and am happy to speak with you too.

Hello Ian
The MP site has families who arrived in 1838 on the "Brilliant" from Tobermory, Scotland. There were four McKinnon siblings on that ship viz. Hugh, Mary, Hector and Julia. The Mp database has Hugh and family, Hector and family, Julia who arrived as a spinster and subsequently married Matthew Sherlock. Mary (nee McKinnon) McFadyen and family went north to the Hunter Valley and consequently do not exist on MP. When you look at the parents for Hugh and Hector they reveal John McKinnon and Catherine McLean from the Isle of Coll. From the "Brilliant" Passenger Records you will find Julia McKinnon. From the Isle of Coll Genealogy records (Keith Dash) you will find the passenger list for the "Brilliant" which includes these four siblings, records 4 (Mary), 6 (Hector), 7 (Hugh) and 8 (Julia) noting she has "her brothers on board". I am quite convince they are all siblings from these and other sources. So my suggestion/request is that you link Julia to the same parents as Hugh and Hector. If you need this or more evidence I can provide that.
These four siblings were from a family of ten siblings which I can provide details of and their descendants. Mine was Lachlan (#2) who did not emigrate but strangely enough his grandson Lachlan did (my Great Grandfather). He became a Lighthouse Keeper at Green Cape from 1893-1905, with a family of eleven children, so he and his wife Eliza (nee Varley) should qualify as a Monaro Pioneer. If so I have extensive data on these families which I can provide to you.
Let me know if you concur with the Julia link to same as Hugh and Hector parents and if you wish to receive information on my Lachlan ancestors. I use Legacy as my database.

Hi Gary,
Thank you for the information. I am happy to accept that Julia was the sister of Hugh and Hector although I can find no record of her birth/baptism in the Scottish Parish registers for Coll.
I would welcome any additional information you can provide, a Legacy file is OK.

YET ANOTHER KILLED
Referring to the supposed death of Mr. Mackay our old friend "Potjostler" sends us these further particulars:—Herbert Downs, January 18, 1879. Mr. C. Needham, who has just arrived here from the Templeton River, where he has been forming a station for Messrs. Stuart and Mackay brings the melancholy news of the loss and certain death of Mr. Duncan Mackay.
On the 19th of December, Mr. Mackay left the camp, six miles up the Templeton, at about 4 o'clock, to follow the river up to look for water, telling his men that he would be back the next day, and that if he was not they might know that there was something seriously wrong with him. He did not return for two days, when two of the men started to look for his tracks, but a heavy thunderstorm coming on shortly after they started left it utterly impossible to find them, and as Mr. Needham some few days previous to his disappearance had been riding all over the country inspecting the run, they could not distinguish his tracks from Mr. Mackay's.
They then spent three days searching for any traces of the missing gentleman, but, not succeeding, they went down to Headingly and Roseborough stations, when Mr. White, of Headingly, and Mr. Cragie, of Roseborough, started upon Christmas Day, and spent a week hunting high and low, but owing to heavy rains falling nearly every day, they were unable to find any signs of the poor fellow, who must have either perished for want of water, or been killed by the poor blacks ; and, I am inclined to think, that the poor blacks are at the bottom of it, as Mr. Needham tells me that the river was covered by blacks' tracks before the rain ; for, although he did not see any, yet he must have been several times very near them. I may state that there is no hope of Mr. Mackay being found alive.
Donald Mackay
Thank you,
Regards, Ian

Good morning Ian
My name is Cheryl Scarlett and George was also my great grandfather.
I was reading with interest your comment about George leaving school aged 10 on Monaro Pioneers.
I am putting together David and Eliza's story.
I was born in Berridale but we moved away while I was quite young. While I get back as often as I can, I am missing a lot of the lovely stories that locals know.
We are very fortunate in that many of the younger generation share our interest in family history so I am trying to bring their story to life as much as possible. Many of the cousins have been very generous in sharing photos and stories. I would love to talk to you if you would like to join us.
I will not be selling the book as the aim is just to spread the word.
The book includes comments on some of the people who worked for David. One burning question I have is about Bricky West. Someone said 'we all know about Bricky West and laughed'. They didn't elaborate. I had not heard of Bricky West so I would really appreciate any help you could give me with that story.
I have been coming to Berridale for some time but have been defeated by Covid and floods. I am still hoping to come soon. I have not unpacked my car and hope to come as soon as the flooding subsides. I would love to catch up with you for a chat on my next trip.
Kind regard, Cheryl
Hi Cheryl,
I am not related to the Scarlett family and reside in Sydney so I am unable to be of much help to you.
I do suggest you put your message and request on our Facebook page where I am sure you will get a better result.

Ian

Hi Ian
I am researching my family history and would like to know if you can help with or point me to any information in relation to the Buckley family. The Monaro Pioneers website states there was a family reunion in 1997; does this organization have any records that I could view? The website suggests I email carrarapark7-at-bocnet.
I am a descendent, on my maternal grandfather’s side, of James and Mary Buckley (both arrived as convicts in the early 1800s) – through their daughter Jane.
Kind Regards
Marion Donaldson
Hi Marion,
You can find the Buckley Family tree information in our database which is free to search once you have registered for a user account.
