FRAWLEY

Hello Ian,

RE: JOHN FRAWLEY & MARY ANN McGARRY

Just following up on John Frawley (c.1816-1901) and Mary Ann McGarry (c.1815-1889), who were pioneers of the Monaro.
They were both convicts from Limerick, Ireland and transported to Sydney in 1833 and 1838 respectively (although whether they were known to one another
is unclear). They were both assigned to Alexander Berry's Coolangatta Estate, although Mary Ann also worked for the Rev. Matthew Meares in Wollongong for 18 months.
They were married on the 6th July 1840 at Wollongong by the Rev. John Rigney, RC Minister, and soon after had a son in John Frawley Jr (1841-1878), who arrived on the 7th May 1841,
while I believe that were still residing at Coolangatta.
Sometime before September of 1842, the Frawleys were hired by the Imlays and journeyed south to Warigubara homestead (spelt variously, but also as Warragaburra etc), which was
initially established by the Imlays, but was later transferred to the Walker Walker & Co. It was at Warigubera that my great great grandmother Ellen Frawley, was born on the 2nd September 1842...
becoming one of the first, if not the very first white child born in the Monaro.
The Frawleys had another child at Warigubera in James Frawley, who arrived on the 14th November 1843. The family were at Warigubera when the Rev. Michael Kavanagh (roving RC minister),
arrived to baptise John Jr, Ellen and James Frawley on the 18th March 1844.

The Frawleys then migrated into the village of Pambula sometime prior to Christmas 1844, when their next child Stephen Frawley, arrived on the 26th December 1844.
They had three more children in Patrick and Letitia (twins) on the 17th March 1848, and Thomas on the 24th June 1849. At Warigubera and at Pambula, John Frawley
worked as a labourer and perhaps also as a shepherd and builder. He was secretary on the committee to build St Peters, the first Catholic Church (1855), secretary on the Pambula Roads committee
(1856), and was a hero in saving people from a flood in Pambula (1860). But he then fell foul of the law and spent a further five years at Darlinghurst, Cockatoo Island and Parramatta Gaols for 'stealing a cow.'
He was released from prison in June 1867 and the Frawleys remained in Pambula until about 1875, when they moved with children and grandchildren to Toowoomba.
Mary Ann Frawley died on the 7th November 1889 at the Dunwich Benevolent Asylum on North Stradbroke Island and is buried there. Still working as a tin miner, John Frawley married secondly on the 27th February
1894 at St Josephs Church, Stanthorpe to Rose Emily Curtis (aged 49). John Frawley died aged 84 on the 25th January 1901 at Maryland, NSW and is buried in the Maryland Cemetery.

I have references to substantiate the above, but most telling is the birth certificate of Ellen Frawley (1842), and the location of Warigubera to the south east of Bega (see attached).
Please let me know if you need additional documents or references to support these facts.

Thanking You

Dear Ian,

Please find another pioneer to add to the Monaro Pioneers Genealogical Database. His name was John Frawley (c.1816-1901)... and he was at 'Warrabuberra Station' in mid 1842. His daughter Ellen was born there in September 1842. I'm just completing a book on John Frawley's life, his wife and his descendants.

Please let me know what material I can provide to verify the claim.

Yours Sincerely

Thank you Tracey, The Frawley family are now part of our database and are listed among the Pioneers.

Old COREY house at JINGERA

From: Sally E
Subject: Old Corey house at Jingera
Date: 12 February 2023 at 2:12:24 pm AEDT

Hi David

My cousins are keen to contact the current owners/ occupiers of the old Corey house at Jingera, to arrange the possible spreading of my aunt's ashes near the house. (My aunt, Enid Duffy nee Ross grew up there, her father George was the schoolmaster at Jingera from 1924 to about 1938 or so).

The house, made of slabs, is situated a few hundred metres from the old Jingera school site (the building is now at Captain's Flat). It is on the same side of the road as the school site, and was renovated maybe 10-15 years ago. We were fortunate to be able to visit it when the Grady family had a 'back to Jingera' reunion once.

I would appreciate it if you could publish this request in the next Monaro Pioneer's Newsletter. Thank you David.

HUTCHISON

From: Alison Hutchison
Subject: The Hutchisons in Queanbeyan and Wanniassa 1848 - 1871
Date: 19 January 2023 at 10:13:59 am AEDT

Dear David

Could you please forward this email to Ian. (When I clicked on the "Contact Ian" link on the MP website I ended up in lots of instructions about email systems which I found incomprehensible. Sorry!)

I wish to submit the attached family history "The Hutchisons in Queanbeyan and Wanniassa 1848 - 1871" to the Monaro Pioneer repository of information.

The document relates to James Hutchison Snr (1803-188) MP84110 and also to his sons including James Hutchison Jnr (1834 - 1884) MP84160

James Snr was a pioneer in the Queanbeyan/ Wanniassa region and his son James Jnr went on to become a Monaro pioneer, living In and around Nimmitabel.

My husband, John Hutchison is a great-great-grandson of James Hutchison (descended from John, brother of James Jnr).

Here are some summary remarks about the family:

·         Having emigrated from England in 1848, the Hutchison family in Queanbeyan comprised James, his wife Selina, one daughter and six sons.
·         They were builders and carpenters and it has been documented that they made their mark on Queanbeyan through the construction of the town’s first purpose-built steam-driven flour mill and other buildings.
·         What is less well known is that they owned a farm in Wanniassa for over a decade and had a sound working relationship with Andrew Cunningham of Lanyon but then, apparently, fell out with him in 1870.
·         This is a story of a pioneering, energetic, enterprising family, skilled in building and carpentry who frequently worked as a team and turned their hand to many forms of work.
·         They arrived with a strong determination to go inland from Sydney and achieve something - no matter the outcome .
·         They come across as independent and self-reliant, traits probably not unrelated to their Scottish ancestry.
·          James Hutchison Snr showed a capacity to alternate between carpentry, building, business enterprise, milling, farming, gold-prospecting and mining.
·         In pulling together facts from disparate sources I have uncovered, what I consider to be sufficient evidence to claim that James Hutchison Snr was contracted by Andrew Cunningham to build the 1859 Lanyon Homestead that stands today.
·         This document  is also an attempt to understand the factors that led to the family’s subsequent loss of connection with the Limestone Plains.
·         At the end of two decades, two family members had died and the adult children had moved to the Monaro, to Melbourne and to mining settlements in NSW.
·         To my knowledge, by 1880, there were no Hutchison descendants living in the area of Queanbeyan or Wanniassa.  And it would be another four decades before any returned to live in the area - to live in Queanbeyan and work on the first Parliament House in the 1920s.

I can provide the document in a Word format if required.

Many thanks for your website and all the time and effort that goes into maintaining it.

When I found it for the first time many years ago, it was the first indication of the family's origins. This was invaluable.

Kind regards

Alison

PS My problem with 'Contact Ian' link on the Monaro Pioneer website apparently relates to my using a new computer which does not have a default email application yet So, not related to your  website. Sorry to have mentioned it. Mr Hutchison is sorting this out!

Thank you Alison,

Your document is now attached to the James Hutchison record in our Pioneers Index.

Regards, Ian
