Description: There appears to be some confusion regarding James Simon Freebody. There is 2 James Simon Freebody(1850-1917), the son of John Freebody(1796-1890) and Sarah Connelly(1800-1898) and was married to Martha A Kiss(1870-1917). The other James Simon Freebody(1859-1930) was the son of Simon Freebody(1835-1919) and Johannah Russell(1832-1887) and he never married. As I am a direct descendant of Simon and Johannah been my great grandparents I hope that I am correct.

Hi Ian,
The James Freebody, son of John Freebody and Sarah Connolly, never married according to his Obituary in the Bombala Time newspaper.
The Bombala Times (NSW : 1912 - 1938) Fri 20 Jul 1917 Page 1
Mr. James Freebody, grazier, of Tuross, near Cootamundra, was driving a dray from Numeralla on Saturday afternoon when the horse took fright and bolted into the bush. Some neighbours near by heard the noise and followed the dray tracks, finding the deceased at the feet of the horse The dray was considerably damaged from having come into contact with trees. Medical aid was summoned, but the injured man died soon after he was found, his head having received severe injury. Mr. J. H. Montague, Deputy Coroner, is holding an inquiry Deceased was a single man, 68 years of age, brother of Mr. John Freebody, of Mittagang, and Mr. Simon Freebody, of Goulburn. — ' Manaro Mercury.'
James Simon Freebody, son of Simon Freebody and Johannah Russell did marry Martha Ambrosia Kiss.

Hello. I’m wondering if you could help as I actually don’t know where to start.
Mt grandmother, Violet Ellen Smith (ape rson ID I63373) had one child, Norman Edward Smith, born 30/6/1925. (Person ID I278421).
Norman is my father and I’m trying to track down any information on who his father might have been.
Violet never married the man who got her pregnant, so my father was born out of wedlock (which was pretty much shunned upon back in the 1920s). My father (Norman) died on 18/8/2001 without ever knowing the name of his father so I’m hoping you might know the best place for me to start searching. I’m afraid I don’t have any information about him at all.
Many thanks in advance for any ideas you might have.
Kind regards, Ann Rupil (née Smith).
Hi Ann,
I suggest you consider doing a DNA test to see if that brings forth any "close" relatives that you are unaware of.

Hi
The articles on Bega are very interesting. Can you please capitalize the word Aboriginal as in “Aboriginal tongue” in the article Bega and the Bega District Australian Town and Country Journal 11 November 1871. I realise it was written a while ago and seems unimportant to some but it is important to many that the Aboriginal community be respected. It’s simple request that doesn’t infer
with the article as such.
Thanks

Hi Margaret,
Your requested change has been made.

WALLACE
Hello Ian
I would like to read more about the Wallace family from Monaro Pioneers website. Wallace Mould was the name of my late mother Neryl Mould Chalmers (née Curry). I assume he was given this name by my maternal grandmother as a tribute to the family Wallace. My mother’s parents were Esther Jessica Curry (née Mould) and Samson Henry Curry (mother Eliza Hain). The Mould family property was Boconnoc.
I am reading more about the earliest white settlers to migrate to the Monaro. I am also very interested in reading more about Gedjezrick as two of my great and great great grandmothers are buried there.
Thank you and all responsible for your work on this website.
Kind regards
Christine James

MONARO PIONEERS
Hi David
I have spent some time researching into William Barton, who is on your Eden/Monaro Pioneers Index. He was a convict sent out to the Colony in 1832.
I have put together his story, starting in the Isle of Wight, convictions and transportation, and time spent as convict labour working for Henry Badgery in Sutton Forest NSW just before he got his Certificate of Freedom.
Free of servitude he travelled down the Great South Road into the Bega Valley in 1849, and there is evidence that the family were among the first settling in Candelo, where they held property, and also farmed acreage in Numbugga on the Bemboka River. William and his family also a worked in the High Country at Spring Flat and Mount Cooper stations on the Monaro Plains.
If possible, I would like you to have his story in your records, so that if anybody comes calling and asks about him you can send it on to them. I’ve also included the story of his wife Elizabeth Seamour – she was a pioneer herself!
David, I’ve found your Monaro Pioneers database a tremendous resource and I’ve acknowledged it wherever I have used your materials.
Thanks again for the work you do.
PS I’ve tried to find an email, without much luck, for the Bombala Family History Society to send on this information- could you pass it on them if possible.
Kind regards David Barton
Hello David,
Many thanks for this information, yes we at MP are most interested in adding to our resources, You have put a lot of effort into the publications, well done.
Please find below some contact details for the Bombala and District Historical Society.

Mary Rattigan Stevens
Hello Ian,
Last year I researched and wrote the story of Mary Rattigan Stevens of Kiah and the Monaro Pioneers website was a very valuable resource.
My apologies. I thought I had sent you a copy but it appears I haven't. Blame Long Covid which I have thankfully recovered from.
Also, I wrote a guide about how to research and write the life stories of Irish orphan girls. There may be tips in there relevant to another researcher/writers.
You have my permission to put them on the website or use them in any way you see fit. It is my way of contributing something.
