HUXLEY

Dear Sir,

Some years ago I noticed on James Huxley’s Wikitree page that there was a reference to the ‘Monaro Pioneers’, but did not follow up on that info.

He and Margaret Hayman were my 3 x g’g’parents and I’m very interested in any connection they had with the Monaro where I spent a lot of time, 1967-1973.

I’d appreciate it if you could let me know how this reference came about.

Regards,

Peter Phelan

Hi Peter,

We do have some genealogy information on this Huxley family in our database which you can search for free.  Their son Cyrus married Mary Jane Plunkett in 1857 in Cooma and had one of their children in 1860 in Nimmitabel.

St John's Baptisma and Marriage Registers

From: Alan Wilson
Sent: Thursday, 7 March 2024 3:47 PM

Subject: St John's Baptisma and Marriage Registers

Dear All

Amongst the treasures in the St John’s Parish Archive are three sets of tiny loose-leaf notebooks containing transcripts of the Parish Registers made by Jean Salisbury (author of St John’s Churchyard Canberra, 1844-2020), probably in the 1990’s. These are for Baptisms (13 notebooks), Marriages (7 notebooks), and Burials (15 notebooks). For each set the entries/pages are, of course, in one sequence, i.e. alphabetical by name, so their usefulness is limited.

So I am transcribing the data in these notebooks into spreadsheets, which makes the registers sortable and searchable. I have completed transcription of the Baptisms and Marriages Registers. The Burials notebooks are a quite different in that they contain substantial additional data, including much related family data in Jean’s miniscule handwriting, and, of course, much of their content appears in her book “St John’s Churchyard Canberra: 1844-2010”.

I have now completed a further re-formatting of the Baptisms Register (1845-1915, 60 pages with 1591 entries) and the Marriages Register (1845-1939, 61 pages with entries for 688 marriages) into Word/PDF documents. Copies of each are attached. The limitations of each are set out in the preliminary notes.

Copies of these documents are attached. I will be offering copies to the National Library of Australia, the Canberra and District Historical Society, the ACT Heritage Library and Family History ACT.

I plan to compile up-to-date versions of these Registers from the copies in the National Library of Australia and from Parish records. These will need more controlled availability as they will contain more contemporary data.

In the long term, I aim to compile a “Deaths” listing, containing entries from the Burial Register, other burials in the St John's Churchyard, burials elsewhere in a place which was in the Parish at the time of the burial, e.g. St Luke’s Gundaroo, or in a private burial ground, those whose ashes are interred in a grave in the Churchyard or in a Columbarium in the Churchyard, those who have had a funeral or memorial service in the Parish, those who have had a funeral or memorial service elsewhere, taken by a minister licensed in the Parish; and those whose death, funeral, burial or interment was announced in Parish NotesIn Community or the Parish weekly newsletter.

Hi Alan,

Well done, I have added a link to the St. John's website and your transcription records on our Churches page on the MP website and thus it is not necessary to duplicate the files on our site.

May I congratulate you on the remarkable effort you have achieved. I for one can appreciate the scale of the workload involved and the dedication and determination needed to complete the task.

I am slowly working my way through the Baptism file (spreadsheet version sorted into ascending date order) and have reached the 1890s so far. I am finding lots of DOB details we did not have and a few Individuals we were missing plus have been able to resolve a few anomalies as well.

Your efforts are enriching the information in the MP Database and will continue to do so as I work through your files.

Thank you,

Regards,

Ian and the Monaro Pioneers team and community.

STAPLETON

The Stapletons.

Hi there,

I typed in Stapletons and this site came up.

Iam related to the Stapletons through my Grandfather Jack Howell of Parramatta.

I have got some information but am always interested in anything new.

The Howells had the old water mill on the Parramatta River.

Sincerely,

Coralie Jessop, Qld.

Hi Carol,

I suggest you check our database for any Stapleton connections.

QUILTER

Hello David             20-01-2024

I'm sorry to say, I have lost my Monaro Pioneers user details, due mainly to a change of email address.

Can you please help me to reset my password and update to a new email address?

David, I would like to be able to add my "family name Quilter" to your database/website.

The Quilters of Gobaralong "Ellamatta" I have quiet a bit of their history now.

What is your procedure going forward?

I'm also related to the listed Monaro families of Warner and Watkins (and a few others).

Congratulations and please keep up your great work 😉

Kindest regards

Greg Quilter

Hi Greg

We do have some information on your Quilter family in our database.  If you want to add to or correct the information we have please send the details to me at this address.

POLLOCK

Hi David,

Happy New Year to all.

I haven't contributed for a long while, but recently going back over some information on my family tree, I found what I believe to be errors in the tree on Monaro Pioneers to do with Robert Snodgrass later to use the name Pollock.

The contributer has a son George Darling Pollock attributed to Robert and Euphemia when in fact if one checks BDMNSW the parents of George D b1849 were John and Jane late Sharpe, nee Kelly Pollock.

Take care

Colleen Levett

Hi Colleen,

The NSW BDM Death Index shows George Darling Snodgrass was the son of Robert and Euphemia…

Deaths Search Results

 SNODGRASS GEORGE DARLING

19002/1941

ROBERT

EUPHEMIA

RANDWICK

I agree the Birth index source reference is incorrect and has been removed.

Regards

Ian

Hi Colleen (again),

I was a bit premature in responding.  On further checking, Robert Snodgrass and his wife Euphemia travelled to Australia as John and Jane Pollock and must have retained the alias names for the Baptism record of their son George Darling as his birth is shown as Pollock but he used his correct name of Snodgrass for the rest of his life.  Given George was born just 6 months after their arrival it is not surprising they maintained the ruse of the false name to avoid any complications with the local authorities.  Thus the birth source reference has been restored.

Regards,

Ian
