GUISE

Subject: Richard Guise - misinformation updates
Date: 31 July 2024 at 5:16:43 pm AEST
Hi,
I am a relation of Richard Guise(Snr) and wanted to flag some inconsistencies in the article Richard Guise: Englishman or French Duke by Roslyn Cartwright.
I am related through my father and his mother.
Richard is my 5th Great-Grandfather
I understand there seems to be people who dispute his French Lineage. I have been building a family tree for some time in Ancestory.com and have recently had his parents and grandparents added through my DNA testing to our family tree. We grew up with stories of them being related to French Nobility, I don’t think he was a Duke, but coming from the Lorraine Region, it is more than likely he was related to the noble Guise family, even if distant.
My father and uncles recalled and used to talk about seeing a very old family tree owned by a country cousin, with the Guise coat of arms and a long history going back in France. They spent a lot of time with this side of the family when they were children.
Richards parents were –
Pierre Guise
Born: 1727 Merviller, Meurthe et Moselle, Lorraine, France
Death: 02 Jan 1776 Leintrey, Meurthe-et-Moselle, Lorraine, France
Marie Franz
Born: abt 1735 Leintrey, Meurthe-et-Moselle, Lorraine, France
Death: 2 Jan 1776 Leintrey, Meurthe-et-Moselle, Lorraine, France
Pierre’s parents were –
Jean Guise
Born: 1696
Death: unknown
Do not hesitate to reach out, if you want to discuss any of the above.
Many thanks.
Kindest regards,
Amanda
Hi Ian and David,
I just realised that the (snr) is attributed to one of his sons, also named Richard. Apologies, I was, to be clear, talking about Richard Guise 1757-1821 the one that first arrived in NSW!
Kind regards,
Amanda
Hi Amanda,
Yes I did understand your meaning.

Death of Nr. Thomas Moorhead.
Died on Monday at the residence of his son William, at Narooma, Mr. Thomas Moorhead, aged 83. Deceased was practically the pioneer of Bermagui, and 40 years ago considerable industrial activity was centered round him at the district port He established the first sawmill there, of which remnants of the old framework still stand as a monument to the enterprise of deceased. At the mill. Mr. Moorhead accumulated an excellent plant of the day, and the owner being possessed of high mechanical ability was keen to introduce methods of labor suiting to lighten the daily tasks of the bands. For many years he was a big employer in the timber industry, the town being practically composed of Moorhead's mill hands. In those citys South Bermagui was not even a name, the jetty had yet to be built, and the steamer trade introduced. Sailing vessels navigated the river, which was then unbridged, and berthed at the old wharf which is still standing. From the mill to the thin wharf, Mr. Moorhead established a tramline, along which trucks were drawn in with timber. He was also interested in local shipbuilding, bring part-owner of the Alice May, the biggest sailing vessel launched in the river, and." also of the Jane Moorhead, another craft, named after deceased's daughter. Later the mill was enjoyed for convenience nearer the river,' and punts were built and engaged in the transport of logs from miles upstream. Moorheads conducted the post office, and for some years also engaged in storekeeping at Uormngui
Deceased was going strong at the time of Montreal rush, and the Lament Young Mystery. He selected on the south side of Bermagui River, the property now owned by Mr. Jno. Bleakley.
Deceased married a Miss Miller, who predeceased him 10 years ago. The sons are Messars John (Queensland), William (Narooma), and James (Cobargo manager of Mclntosh's store), daughters, Mrs. Palmer and Miss Jane Moorhead (the latter still residing at the old home and conducting the Bermagui post office). Deceased was born in Tyrone (Ireland) and before settling at Bermagui lived at Buckajo, Bega district. His brother William, until his death a few years ago, was a prominent figure in the development and public life of Eden. Our old friend was esteemed for his downright honesty, and as his long life at Bermagui demonstrated was possessed of strong determination and an enterprise far beyond the ordinary. Old hands who knew him well will regret the passing of 'Tommy' Moorhead, and this district and Her Majesty will sympathize with the bereaved family. The funeral took place on Tuesday afternoon, the remains being interred according to deceased's wish in the Bermagui Presbyterian cemetery by the side of his late wife. The Rector conducted the funeral service which was attended by a number of deceased's old employed and friends.

Dear Ian & David,
Your Monaro Pioneers website is terrific! What an amazing collection of historical info and images.
You may be aware that Back Roads recently filmed an episode in Nimmitabel. We are now in final stages of editing - I am looking for photos of Nimmitabel/Monaro area in early 20th century.. We're looking for images of:
- timber industry/forestry logging (images including people group shots)
- grazing, sheep/cattle (including people group shots)
- Ngarigo Indigenous people. We are working with a Ngarigo traditional custodian who will help us navigate the necessary cultural permissions for use of these photos.
The photos need to be reasonably high resolution for use in the documentary – but I would be interested to hear what you have, any size, or advice on finding these photos in a fairly short period of time.
I would be grateful to hear from you at your earliest.

Dear David,
My name is Margaret Ann Pike (nee Edwards). I have been building my family tree using Ancestry.com and came across a photo of my mother, Mary Edwards, while broadening my search. I discovered that Stephen Phillipps (my cousin) had uploaded the photo to MyHeritage.com. I cannot locate his profile or any of his contact information online, however, I found that he was mentioned in your newsletter.
If he’s still around I was hoping to get in contact with him personally, if at all possible. I’d love to know if he has any photos of my family. I have a great photo of his mother and my mother, Cecilia. If you are able to volunteer any information or reach out to him or one of his relatives to let him know I am interested in catching up, that would be lovely.
Thank you again.
Kind regards,
Margaret

I wasn’t sure if Monaro Pioneers had a subscription to the RAHS and it’s magazine but I included a screenshot of the pages from the RAHS History Magazine. cheers Debbie.
Hi Debbie,

Another of our old and respected residents died on Wednesday night, when Mrs. Ingram, widow of the late Mr. Henry Ingram, crossed over to the Great Majority. Mrs. Ingram had for some time been troubled with an internal complaint, until it was realised that only an operation could give relief, and on Dr. Marsh's advice she went to Sydney on Good Friday, and entered the Prince Alfred Hospital.
Last week an operation was performed by Drs. McCaulvey and Young, and for some days the patient seemed to be getting better, but the end came quickly, and members of the family here on Thursday received the sad news of her death. Her son, Charlie, was with her in Sydney. Arrangements have been made to bring the body to Bombala for interment in the local cemetery, and the funeral will take place this afternoon at 3.30. The deceased was 70 years of age, and a native of the district. A family of seven sons and three daughters were born here, and most of them are still living in the locality.
