Cooma Monaro Express 21 June 1929

Mr. James Burke, aged 79 years, died on Tuesday last at the residence of his daughter, Mrs. Albert Adams, Albert St. Cooma, after a long illness. He was the eldest son of the late Mr.& Mrs. Francis Burke, of Slack’s Creek, Cooma.

Deceased was born in Trim, Ireland, and came out with his parents at the age of 9 years, who went to live at Dalgety, where they had a farm. When a young man he went to work at Matong, for the Messrs. Litchfield Bros. and was employed on all their Stations until about four years ago.

He married at the age of 21 years, Catherine Elina Callaghan, who predeceased him 32 years ago. He leaves five sons, Frank of Royalla, Percy of Nimmitabel, John of Queensland, Patrick of Bathurst, and William of Moss Vale. Three daughters Mrs. Arthur Thornton, of Queanbeyan, Mrs. Albert Adams of Cooma, and Mrs. Archie Dunn of Sydney. There are also 28 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren.

The remains were taken to St. Patrick’s R.C. Church, where a short service was conducted by the Very Rev. Dean Norris. The interment took place at Mittagng Cemetery, where Dean Norris officiated. The pall bearers were his three sons, Frank, Percy and William, and a nephew Ambrose Murray.

Wreaths were from Sons and daughters, Frank, Percy, Jack, Nap and Will, Ada and Maud, sister Bridget and Brother Tom, Jane and family, Mr. and Mrs. Chalker and Colin, Mr. & Mrs. W. Parker, Mr. & Mrs E.H. Litchfield and family, Mrs. Shephard and F. Murray, Mr. & Mrs Ted Constance and Joan, Mrs. L. Rolfe and family.

There was a large attendance at the funeral, the arrangements being carried out by Mr J.F. Allen.
