Jackson Clarke of "Spring Creek" Berridale was the son of Samuel Clarke (a miller) and his wife Euphemia. He was born in Foundry Lane, Dundee, Scotland on the 27th December, 1839.
At the age of 19 years he fought under General Ulysses (Unconditional Surrender) Grant in the Union army for the north in the American Civil War to abolish slavery. He was wounded in the left arm.
He returned to Scotland and married Miss Emily Jamieson (daughter of Alexander Jamieson and Sarah Braiden) on 26th August 1864 in the old St. Mary Magdalene, Episcopal Church of Scotland in Blinshar Street, Dundee.
Their son Robert was baptised in the above church on the 9th July 1865. Thier address was then Cowden Knowes.
Jackson Clarke with his wife Emily, their son Robert and Mrs Sarah Jamieson (who was about 67 years old) sailed from Dundee to Australia in the ship "The Light Brigade" during January 1867 and land at Twofold Bay, Eden, on the 31st May 1867.
They travelled to Gedgedzerick Monaro by bullock wagon where Emily's brother Alexander Jamison (later of White Hill) was employed as a shepherd for Brooks Brothers. Jackson Clarke was also employed as a shepherd for several years on Gegedzerick. Their first home on Gegedzerick was on the opposite side of the creek to where Mort Suther's house is situated at present. The remains of the old house is on "Glenmore", owned by the Deegan family.
Jackson Clarke selcted his property "Spring Creek" in 1881 where he lived until his death on 13 August 1934, at the age of 94 years. His wife Emily died on 24th September, 1906 at the age of 66 years. Mrs. Sarah Jamieson (mother of Alexander, Robert and Emily) died on 26th March 1878 at the age of 78 years. They are all buried in the old Anglican section of the Gegedzerick cemetary.
