Margaret Curtis
Burnima 1843

 


MARGARET CURTIS, daughter of John and Margaret Parker, was born in Limerick, Ireland, in 183 1, and arriving with her parents, John and Margaret Parker, in Australia in 1841, reached Manaro in 1843. The family at first resided a, Burnima, near Bombala, where a son Joseph, popularly and affectionately known in the Jingera District as "Uncle Joe," was born. Mr. and Mrs. Parker afterwards came to Cooma, and were employed at Greenhills Station, owned by Mr. Alexander Montague, and at - Rosebrook, - then belonging to Laurence Harnett. Later John Parker entered into partnership with Richard Thurbom of Good Good, who married Miss Margaret Parker. Richard Thurbon died in 1893*, leaving a large family, the members of which are well-known about Jingera, Good Good, Jerangle, Anembo and Whinstone Valley. After a widowhood of 20 years, Margaret Thurbon married William Curtis, with whom she lived till her death in 1913 at the age of 82 years. Her sisters were Mrs. Mellidew, who lived to pass the age of 90 years, whilst another sister, Mrs. Tyrie, of Jingera, was over 80 years. Two daughters of the first marriage were Mrs. Robert Scott and Mrs. A. B. Boat.

CORRECTION

There was a factual error in "Back to Cooma" which you transcribed onto the Monaro Pioneers website. Margaret Cutis' first husband, Richard THURBON, actually died on 01/01/1881 by committing suicide by hanging. This was reported in the papers at the time.
Richard and Margaret THURBON were my GG Grandparents.
