History

JAMES JOSEPH DEVEREUX was born in Tipperary, Ireland, in 1849. When seven years of age he accompanied his parents, a brother, and two sisters to Australia. The family stayed in Sydney for three days, and then, hiring a bullock team and dray at Emu Plains, came on to Manaro. The father, James Devereux, obtained the management at Bredbo of a property called Black Springs, belonging to Charles York, a step-brother of John Cosgrove. After remaining with Mr. York for six years, he selected under the old Act of 1861 320 acres of land at Spring Flat Creek, Rock Flat. On the completion of his education the subject of this sketch turned his attention to pastoral matters. He selected on his own behalf in 1863, and gradually built up a large estate. This has a frontage to the main Cooma-Nimmitabel Road, is near the famous Rock Flat mineral water springs, and was at one time part of the Dangelong Run. Mr. Devereux devoted his attention mainly to sheep farming, and to producing a class of wool of the finest description. He got together .a flock of pure merinos, founded on stock from such noted breeders as Messrs. Jaynes Gibson "Belle View," D. Taylor, G. Gatenby, George Parramore, Faulkner, and Edols. He was an exhibitor of sheep at many places away from Cooma and was always placed amongst the prize-winners. He gained a wide reputation as a judge of sheep and wool, and his services in this respect were largely sought after. Mr. Devereux held the office of Chairman of the National School Board for the district, being one of the first members appointed thereto by Sir Henry Parkes; was a member of the Board of Directors for the pastoral and stock district of Cooma, a committee-man of the 'Cooma Hospital, a member of the local Pastoral -and Agricultural Society, and an Alderman of the Municipality. He was twice married. His property, originally known as "The Springs," is now called "Milton Park." Some years ago he divided his holdings between his sons, Messrs. 0. C. and T. V. Devereux.
