JOHN COSGROVE, born at St. Mary's, N.S.W., in 1810, arrived in Maneroo in the early thirties and is regarded as one of the first settlers. Coming from Emu Plains, he was accompanied by his half-brothers, Charles and Henry York. With them came as servants the brothers Gillon Thomas, Robert and James. John Cosgrove settled at Billylingera, about 17 miles north of what is now Cooma, and not far from the southernmost point reached by Currie and Ovens in their expedition of 1823. Mr. Cosgrove and his step-brothers held large areas of land in partnership, and owned immense herds of cattle. Their early holdings were Queeingallery (afterwards called Queen's Gallery), of 25,600 acres, which stood in the name of John Cosgrove, Billy Lingera (a native word meaning "the resting place of the Native Companion"), of 16,640 acres, and Adaminadurnee, of 16,000 acres, both of these latter in the name of Cosgrove and York. Adamindumee will be recognised as being the Adaminaby of to-day. Yorks also had a holding at Bredbo called Black Springs. This was managed for some six years by James Devereux, Senior, upon the latter's arrival on Manaro. Mr. Cosgrove lived at Billy Lingera, and Henry York went to Adaminaby, where he remained till his wife was accidentally burnt to death. Mrs. York was certainly one of the first, if not the first, white woman to reside at Adaminaby. The Adaminaby interests of York and Cosgrove were looked after by their stockmen and hut-keepers, Martin Byrne, Henry Ball and Thomas Westerman, the latter being known as "Yorky Tom". After Byrne left, his place was taken by Joseph Henry Chalker. Thomas Gillon also went to Adaminaby and looked after Rock Forest for Peter Curtis. It was Cosgrove's employees who, in all likelihood, were the first Adaminaby residents.

The early days of Amos Crisp at Jimenbuen were not free from both difficulty and danger. Blacks, who were very numerous, if not actually dangerous to human life, were continually spearing the cattle. A market for cattle was difficult to obtain, and one draft of Jimenbuen fat bullocks was sold in Sydney for boiling down purposes at 17/6 per head. New Zealand was resorted to as a market in 1850. On one occasion a Crisp consignment, being condemned as pleuro, infected, was taken out to sea and thrown overboard. In later years the Gippsland market proved profitable. Mr. Crisp in November, 1852, purchased Numbla Station for 1000 pounds from Captain Gorman. He also purchased Matong Run from Ben Boyd, and worked it and Numbla as one property. On the three properties named Mr. Crisp raised many cattle, as many as 3,000 calves being branded in one year. They were weaned in a property now known as Mount Darragh, and owned by Langhorn Bros.

John Cosgrove had a family of thirteen, and of these three sons-William, born in 1838, John Charles Henry, and James-occupied respectively Riversdale, Oakvale and Billilingera Stations, and played a large part in the grazing history of the district. William Cosgrove died in 1915 and his son, Mr. A. R. Cosgrove, now occupies Billilingra Station.

Harold Edward CRISP was born 11 SEP 1888, and died 31 JUL 1908.   11   iii. John Charles CRISP was born 20 SEP 1894 in Cooma, NSW, and died 26 APR 1961 in Cooma, NSW. He married Ida HAIN 28 FEB 1924 in Hainfield, Cooma, NSW. She was born 22 JUN 1897 in Cooma, NSW, and died in Cooma, NSW.   12   iv. Rubie Rose CRISP was born 30 JAN 1891 in Boloco, Dalgety, NSW, and died 22 JUL 1982 in Cooma, NSW. She married Hilary James MONCKTON 30 AUG 1915 in Ironmongie, via Cooma, NSW. He was born 26 SEP 1889, and died 11 NOV 1969 in Rose Bay, NSW.   13   v. Pauline Rose CRISP was born 18 APR 1898 in Cooma NSW, and died 4 SEP 1956 in Ironmungie, Tahmoor NSW. She married Reuben Forester PAYTEN 5 NOV 1923 in St Phillips Church, Sydney, son of Reuben Rose PAYTEN and Isabella Sarah GIBB. He was born 31 DEC 1895 in Goulburn, NSW, and died 8 AUG 1970 in St Ives NSW.

 

3.	Henry Thomas Merrett ROSE (Reuben Uther Bartlett ROSE2, Thomas ROSE1) was born 14 NOV 1866 in Campbelltown, NSW, and died 31 JUL 1938. He was buried in St James Cemetery, Boloco, Dalgety, NSW. He married Amelia Jane HAIN 1893. She was born 5 AUG 1868, and died 20 JUL 1940. She was buried in St James Cemetery, Boloco, Dalgety, NSW.

Clifton Merrett ROSE was born 1900, and died 1965. He married Jessie Eliza Florence MCDONALD 1938 in Sydney, NSW. She was born ABT 1911, and died 22 JAN 1994 in Cooma, NSW.   18   v. Henry Arthur Merrett ROSE was born 26 OCT 1902 in Berridale, NSW, and died 8 AUG 1980 in Cooma, NSW. He married Nada Marion GOODWIN 14 OCT 1940 in St James Church, Sydney, NSW. She was born 12 MAR 1907 in Cooma, NSW, and died 29 MAY 1994 in Bombala, NSW.   19   vi. Nancy ROSE was born 10 JUN 1905, and died 25 NOV 1962. She married Ronald Mackay MOULD 29 JAN 1936 in Cooma, NSW. He was born 17 JAN 1909, and died 17 FEB 1979.

She was buried in St Peter's Cemetery, Campbelltown NSW. She married Joseph Lawrence WILLIAMS 1900 in Cooma, NSW. He was born 1873 in Bega, NSW, and died 1936 in Mosman, NSW.

7.	Amy May ROSE (Reuben Uther Bartlett ROSE2, Thomas ROSE1) was born 8 FEB 1878 in "Boloco", Dalgety, NSW, and died 18 FEB 1955 in Sydney. She was buried in St James Cemetery, Boloco, Dalgety, NSW. She married Alfred Ernest Campbell JEANNERET. He was born 1868, and died 11 SEP 1944 in Cooma, NSW. He was buried in St James Cemetery, Boloco, Dalgety, NSW.
