When the 1861 Land Act became operative, Robert, Henry and George Goodwin took up land in the vicinity of Middle Flat. William Goodwin was drowned at Boon's Crossing, in the Umeralla River, about 1850, his wife, who was a Miss Sarah Sophia Skipton. dying at Middle Flat in 1893, at the age of 89 years. Henry, the last of the sons, died in Queensland in 1922 at the age of 97.
George Goodwin, Thomas Goodwin and William Goodwin's wife, after selecting land in 1862, formed the partnership of Goodwin Bros., which has been continued by their descendants up to the present. At first the business was purely a grazing one, but some number of years back the butchering business, for 38 years previously carried on by Mr. C. J. Connell, was acquired as an adjunct to the grazing interests. The firm has prospered in every way and possesses the original property at Middle Flat, with others elsewhere, comprising approximately 15,000 acres.
The firm also for some time owned and worked Woolway Station, of 7,000 acres, near Dalgety. In 1924 this property was acquired by the Crown at Three Pound, Eight shillings per acre under the provisions of the Closer Settlement Act, and then sub-divided into nine farms.
One of the members of the firm, Mr. G. S. Goodwin, has for many years taken an active part in the civil life of the community, and is the President of the Monaro Shire for the current year.
