Joseph Groves
Bombala c1864

Delegate Argus 15 January 1914

A large number of Mr and Mrs John Groves's relations gathered together at the little reserve on New Year's Day, this place, being half way between the families residing at Delegate, Bendoc and Buckey Springs.  The parties all arrived early in the day, and all kinds of games were indulged in, even the old folks joining to make a really good time for one and all.  Edison's phonograph, perched on top of the water barrel, took the place of the band that could not be obtained, and was not by any means despised.
There was only one chance to make a calculation of the number present and that was when all were seated round the table cloths spread with all kinds of good things.  It was then found that there were 34, including Mr and Mrs Groves senr; and still there were 15 of the family not present.  In all there are 47 in the family, sons, daughters, sons-in-law, daughter-in-law, and grand-children; 28 grand-children living, and only two deaths (two little children) have occurred to break the family links.  It is the one great hope of that large family, one and all, that the old couple will be spared to them for many years to come.
