HISTORICAL INFORMATION

JAMES MILEHAM HASSALL, JP of Wambrook Lake, near Cooma was born at Macquarie Grove, near Camden, in 1826, and is the son of the late Samuel  Otoo Hassall, one of the pioneer squatters of Australia, who, during his lifetime, had runs at the Cow Pastures, O'Connell plains, near Bathurst, and Burrowa.  On his father's side Mr. Hassall is the Grandson of the late Rev. Rowland Hassall, one of the earliest chaplains of the colony, and his mother, who was born at Parramatta in 1800, was the only daughter of Dr. James Mileham, a magistrate, who, it will be remembered, was connected with the deposition of Governor Bligh.  Our subject was educated at Goulburn, and became a squatter at Burrowa.  Seventeen years ago he purchased his present property, which is one of the finest in the district. Mr. Hassall has a family of six sons and eight daughters. His eldest son was unfortunately killed in a deep well out in the far West by the falling of a piece of timber.  At the time of his decease he was twenty seven years of age. (ends).

Samuel Hassall received the property ‘Macquarie Grove’ on his father Rowland’s death. Rowland had properties principally in the Parramatta area, and also at Camden, O’Connell plains near Bathurst, and on the Hawkesbury River. However, he didn’t have property at Burrowa, that was the Hume family.  Rowland Hassall was never a Reverend, he wasn’t ordained. He was a lay preacher and dedicated much of his life to the church.

James Mileham Hassall was my Great Great Grandfather.

He was born on 5 November 1826 at his parents property called ‘Macquarie Grove’ Camden. Unfortunately, his father Samuel died when James was not yet 4 years old and 10 days before James’ younger brother (named Samuel Otoo after his father) was born. His mother Lucy (nee Mileham) then married John J. Howell on the 15 November 1833. James married Anne Isabella Hume (daughter of Francis Rawdon Hume) on 30 March 1853 at the property of Anne’s parents ‘Castlesteads’ Burrowa. James and Anne first lived at their property at Bathurst, and later rented a property at Gunning before buying ‘Wambrook Lake’ Cooma. The family trecked to ‘Wambrook’ in 1869 from Gunning with all their sheep, horses and cattle, and 10 children aged from 1 to 15 years. James and Anne had a total of 14 children, all reaching adulthood. James died on 25 August 1896, aged 69, and he and Anne are buried in the cemetery beside the Gegedzerick Anglican Church.
