Richard Hyles
RICHARD HYLES arrived from England by the ship "Petrel" in 1849, He was accompanied by his wife, his sons, Thomas and Richard, and a daughter, Amelia, who afterwards became a Mrs. Merewether. Fellow voyagers with Mr. I Hyles and his family were Mr. James Hain, his wife, two daughters and three sons, all of whom later became closely associated with the history of Manaro. The two families, both leaving their native land to build up a home in a new country, became friendly, and journeyed together from Sydney to Goulburn by bullock dray. Whilst Mr. Hain stayed at Goulburn. Mr. Hyles journeyed on till he reached the vicinity of what is now Canberra. There he rented and worked a farm, then owned by a Mr. Murray. He then came on to Manaro, and worked for a time on the Green Hills Run, and later took up land at Dry Plain. Thomas Hyles, his son. who is still alive, was born on 15th July, 1836, and was about 13 years old when his parents arrived at Cooma. This would fix the date at about 1849. Mr. Thomas Hyles for a time held Muzzlewood Run. He also had property at Dry Plain but left Manaro and went down about Bungendore Mr. Thomas Hyles married a Miss Barrett, a daughter of a well known Adaminabv family.
