 John Ingram

Jack Ingram the son of Charles and Anne Ingram of Delegate was born on 22.11. 1896. He married Edna Targett, daughter of Alfred and Martha Targett, on 25.10.1916 at St John’s C of E Tantawanglo.

In July 1923, records show that Martha (Polly) Targett owned part of Mowitt’s Swamp at Kybeyan.

Following their marriage they lived at Delegate for 16 years, where their four children Coral (1917), Harley (1919-1999), Elvira (Bub) (1921-2004), and John (1927-1986) were born.

In 1932 they returned to Nimmitabel and lived at Mowitt’s Swamp, in 1934 they purchased ‘Glenlea’ on the Old Bega Road, then moved to ‘Rockleigh’ in 1938, where they remained until the early eighties.

They were both very active members of the community with Jack being President of the Pioneers Memorial Hall (at that time  known as The School of Arts) for several years, and also President of the BNA, and he was closely associated with other organisations.  He was a top shearer, and shore in many Monaro sheds until  he was over 60 years of age. He was still shearing his own sheep after that time.

Edna was a great cook, good friend to many, and a valued member of the Nimmitabel community, giving generously of her time and talent to many organisations. She was foundation member of the CWA Branch, and served as President for some years. A life membership was bestowed on her in recognition of her dedication and work for the CWA. The Red Cross, BNA, Church Women’s Union always received strong support from her.

Jack and Edna were very involved with St Peter’s Anglican Church, being regular worshippers all their life.  Edna was organist at St Peter’s Anglican Church for many years.

They celebrated their diamond wedding (60 years) in October 1976 with a party at the Pioneers Hall.

Jack died aged 82 years in 1977, and Edna died in 1985 aged 89 years. They  are buried in the Nimmitabel cemetery.
