John Maximus Lette
Genealogy Septimus George Lette and Photos supplied by Margaret Dawn Cowie [cowies1-at-optusnet.com.au] 15.05.09 JOHN MAXIMUS LETTE was one of the early settlers of the Kiandra district. He was born in 1827 near Launceston, Tasmania. In 1853 he came over to New South Wales and settled at Brisbane Water. In 1860, when the rush broke out, he removed to Kiandra, where, amongst other interests, he had a store, and later became engaged in pastoral and mining pursuits. On the concession of responsible Government to the Colony, he was created a Magistrate. For many years he filled the position of district coroner at Adaminaby, and maintained a reputation for honesty and integrity. Mr. Lette at one time possessed large
properties, holding Addicumbene, on which he grazed up to 22,000 sheep, whilst residing on an estate of 510 acres adjoining. Mr. Lette's brother, the Hon. H. E. Lette, for twenty seven years represented Central Launceston in the Tasmanian Parliament, and for a lengthy period filled the position of Chairman of Committees. John Maximus Lette died at Adaminaby.
