James McGufficke b1818 and his wife Esther (Nee Jardine) b1819 were born in Dumfries Scotland in 1819. They married on 30th July 1840 at St. Michaels Church Dumfries, Scotland. James and Esther left Scotland on 15th Sept 1840 onboard the Barque "Ariadne" arriving in Port Jackson on 16th Feb 1941. From Port Jackson they went overland to "Nithsdale" 24km south of Braidwood to the home of fellow Scotsman, Hugh Wallace. James was employed as a Ploughman and Labourer. On 11th June 1841 the first of the Australian McGufficke's was born William Jardine McGufficke, the second child a daughter Nicholas Eggleton McGufficke was born in 1845, and sometime after that James Esther and their two small children moved to the Monaro, still in the employ of Hugh Wallace. John Inman McGufficke was born at Cootralantra on New Years Day 1848, Esther 1850 at Dry Plain, Agnes 1852 at Jindabyne, Janet 1854 Cootralantra, Elizabeth 1856, Coolamatong, James 158 Mowles Gully, Mary 1860 Mowles Gully.
James was in the Jindabyne area as early as 1850 where on 20th Oct 1850 he was said to have acquired the leasehold on Suggan Buggan from Henry Kerison
After the Robertson land act came to pass in 1863 James and Esther commenced to buy land of their own using their own and their children's names, which was a common practice then as each person was only allowed 300 acres maximum. They soon acquired a sizable property, calling it Kelton Plain, were they built their home, which is now owned by Haslingdon's. Part of the original property "Kelton" is still owned by a member of the McGufficke family.
In 1868 James and Esther lost their youngest daughter Mary, and by 1870 they had separated, due to unhappy differences. James made his home in Sydney and Esther continued to reside at Kelton Plain
In the following ten years James bought and sold several properties in the inner city areas of Surry Hills Redfern and Darlinghurst. At the time of his death on 11 Dec 1885 James was living in one of nine cottages he owned in Surry Hill.
The shock of James's death proved too much for Esther she collapsed, went into a coma and died a few days later on 14th Dec 1885.
James is buried in the Old Presbyterian Section of the Rookwood cemetery and Esther is buried in the Presbyterian Section of the Gegedzerick Cemetery.

William Jardine McGufficke married at Berridale on 9 May 1847 Catherine Oliver (D/O William Oliver and Mary Ross) Catherine was born in Sydney in 1841. William died 1926 at Jindabyne, and Catherine died 1914 both are buried at Gegedzerick

Nicholas Eggleton McGufficke married at Cooma 25 Jan 1871 Michael Scully. Michael was the son of Patrick Scully and Ellen Berkery. Nicholas died 1924 and Michael died 1929 Both Buried Rookwood.

John Inman McGufficke married 1878 at Gegedzerick Amelia (Emily) Jamieson D/O Alexander Jamieson and Elizabeth Annie Francis. Emily died 1881and is buried at Gegedzerick. John Inman remarried Amy Hemming D/O Henry Hemming and Mary Whelan. Amy died 1921 and John died 1935 All buried at Gegedzerick.

Esther McGufficke married at Kelton Plain 26 Sept 1874 Daniel McGregor S/O Malcolm McGregor and Isabella McIlchere. Esther died in 1927 and Daniel in 1946. Both are buried at Gegedzerick Cemetery

Agnes McGufficke married at Kelton Plain on 17 April 1876, Frederick John Mould, S/O George Yong Mould and Maria Cranch. Agnes died 1929 and is buried at Gegdzerick and Fredrick died 1932 and is buried at Adaminaby.

Janet McGufficke married 1880 at Kelton Plain Robert Jardine S/O William Jardine and Catherine Cochrane, Janet died 1935 and Robert died 1934 both are buried in Cooma Mittagang Cemetery.

Elizabeth McGufficke Died 1881 aged 25

Mary McGufficke Died 1868 aged 7 years and 8 Months and is buried at Gegegdzerick

James McGufficke married 1886 Sarah Brown D/O Frederick Brown and Mary Ann Weston.
James died 1920 at Inverell and Sarah died 1941 at Inverell.

Wedding at Jindabyne

Lawrence I. McGufficke

A quiet wedding was celebrated at the Presbyterian Church, Jindabyne, on Wednesday 26th July, between Mr. Lawrence I. McGufficke son of Mr. J. I. McGufficke, Mowenbah, and Miss E. Alma Wallace, second daughter of Mr. George Wallace, of Hilltop, Jindabyne. Rev J.P. Mortimore preformed the happy ceremony. Mr. L. Barry acted as best man, and Miss Agnes McGufficke sister of the bridegroom was the bridesmaid. Miss Venie Wallace presided at the organ, and played the Wedding March. After the ceremony the happy pair left for the coast, where the honeymoon will be spent.
