(Last changed

HENRY CHARLES MERRETT was born in Liverpool, New South Wales, in 1841. After being educated at Campbelltown, he, in 1865, came to Coonhoongbula Station at Buckley's Crossing, in order to manage it for his aunt, Mrs. Eccleston. He acquired a property known as "The Corner," having a frontage to the Snowy River. He at all times evidenced a very active interest in matters pertaining not only to Buckley's Crossing, but to Manaro generally, and was instrumental in having erected over the Snowy River the large iron bridge at Buckley's Crossing, the first cylinder of which he was
invited to lay on 17th March, 1888. Transcribed by Pattrick Mould in 2003, from the book "Back to Cooma' Celebrations" page 81
Delegate Argus 5 February 1914
The death is announced from Dalgety of Mr Henry Charles Merrett at the age of 74 years. He was a native of Campbelltown, but had resided on the Monaro for the greater portion of his life. He was the first President of the Dalgety Shire Council, and held many other public positions, but he will be chiefly remembered for his great efforts in urging the claims of Dalgety at the time the Federal Capital Site was being chosen.
He was buried in Boloco Cemetery, the memorial headstone reading, "Henry Charles Merrett died 20 January 1914 aged 73 years." (Headstone transcription courtesy the Heraldry & Genealogy Society of Canberra from their publication 'Monumental Inscriptions Monaro, Canberra, 1999)
