Montgomery Park Homestead
Info on land: 50 acres, 2 km long and 175m wide, built in 1885 for Montgomery and later owned by Clarence Burke, the Lehmanns bought the land in 1954 and sold it to Mr Rutherford about 1997, at one time it was the second largest mill on the Monaro, this photo was about 1913. The home was moved to Cooma. |
Upon his return Clarence purchased the Montogomery Park property and sawmills in 1919. Montgomery Park was established in the early 1900's by an American named Monty Montgomery who came to Australia with plenty of money and established a very large sawmill, and also building what was described as a magnificent home, this property was situated beside the New Line Rd.
In 1927 Clarence opened a Timber Yard at Braidwood Rd, Goulburn. Timber was transported from Nimmitabel to the Goulburn Yards, via a private track. This timber yards were closed in 1930, Clarence continued to cut timber at "Big Bog" Nimmitabel.
Clarence remained in the timber business until 1938, he loved the outdoors, after this the family moved to Cooma, where Clarence gained a position at the local power station as "Shift Engineer". In 1948 he left this position to go into the Garage Business - "Burke and Churchill" (now the Woolworths Service Station in Cooma).
This is the story of where my great grandfather originated from, Clarence and his wife Rebecca (or Betty as she preferred) are buried alongside each other in the Cooma Cemetery.
